Amateur Radio on the International Space Station (ARISS) Status Report December 12, 2011 1. Canadian School Contact Successful On Monday, December 5, students attending Nuvviti School in Ivujivik Nunavik Quebec, Canada participated in an Amateur Radio on the International Space Station (ARISS) contact with on-orbit astronaut Dan Burbank, KC5ZSX. Station WH6PN in Hawaii provided the radio connection. This was Burbank's first contact and most of the community came out for the event, with approximately 200 students and parents present. The radio activity was incorporated into lessons on space and radio communications and was sponsored by First Air and the Makivik Corporation. 2. New Proposal Cycle for ARISS-US Contacts NASA Teaching From Space (TFS) office recently announced a new proposal cycle for ARISS-US contacts. The deadline for submitting proposals is January 30, 2012 for contacts to be held in the July 15, 2012 - January 15, 2013 timeframe. The next informational session will be held on Tuesday, December 13 at 9 am CST (1500 UTC) to answer any questions concerning the proposal process. Amateur Radio Newsline on ARISS On December 9, the Amateur Radio Newsline Report 1791 posted a story about the Russian Shadow Experiment being delayed until new equipment is launched to the ISS. Another item included in the report is about news coverage of the next Soyuz (ISS 29S) launch later this month: "NASA to Cover all Aspects of Next Crew to ISS Live." An International Space Station school contact has been planned with participants at Hirano branch of Kobe Youth Nurturing Council, Kobe-city, Hyogo-pref, Japan on 12 Dec. The event is scheduled to begin at approximately 11:15 UTC. The duration of the contact is approximately 9 minutes and 30 seconds. The contact will be direct between NA1SS and 8J3H. The contact should be audible over Japan and adjacent areas. Interested parties are invited to listen in on the 145.80 MHz downlink. The contact is expected to be conducted in English. Kobe City consolidated with Hirano Town in 1947. At the same time, Hirano Junior High School was founded temporarily by using some school buildings of Hirano Primary School. When Kobe City began to develop Seishin New Town in the latter 1960s, Hirano Junior High was moved from Hirano Area to present Kasugadai One in the New Town in 1984. Though Hirano Junior High School is one of the largest schools in Kobe City now, the educational principle of the School has always regarded each schoolchild's independence as important. Furthermore the schoolchildren are lucky enough to be able to have in the good natural environments and the fine educational conditions. Then the schoolchildren grow freely and openheartedly. Participants will ask as many of the following questions as time allows: 1. How long do you workout in space? 2. How did you feel when you first put on the space gear? 3. In space, how many times can you clap your hands in 10 seconds? Any difference on the ground? 4. What are your favorite things to do in the space station? 5. Have you got a homesick in the space station? 11. How did you like it when you first experienced the zero gravity? 12. Why did you become an astronaut? 13. Can you play yo-yo in space? 14. Have you seen Jupiter from the space station? 15. How many times have you gone up to the outer space? 16. What is the hardest thing for you to do in the space life? 17. How do you spend most of your time in the space station? 18. What is your feeling when you look over the universe from the space station? 19. What do you want to do most when return to the ground? 20. Do you read books in the space station? Can you turn the page as well as you do on the ground? 21. Do you learn a lot in the space life? 22. Amateur Radio on the International Space Station (ARISS) Status Report December 5, 2011 1. Upcoming School Contact Nuvviti School in Ivujivik Nunavik, Quebec, Canada has been scheduled for an Amateur Radio on the International Space Station (ARISS) contact on Monday, December 5 at 18:10 UTC via station WH6PN in Hawaii. Students have formed a space club and are learning about the ISS via videos, the internet and guest speakers. They are also learning about correct radio usage and protocol and are working on science-related projects that they will display in the gym. First Air and the Makivik Corporation are sponsors of the contact. 2. New Proposal Cycle for ARISS-US Contacts NASA Teaching From Space (TFS) office recently announced a new proposal cycle for ARISS-US contacts. The deadline for submitting proposals is January 30, 2012 for contacts to be held in the July 15, 2012 - January 15, 2013 timeframe. TFS has received several inquiries and proposals are already coming in. An informational session will be held on Wednesday, December 7 at 12 PM CST (1800 UTC) to answer any questions concerning the proposal process.
