Hello Everyone, This message arrived in the AMSAT News Service mailbox. I'm sending it out today because waiting for the weekend news cycle will make it late. ----- Dear AMSAT friends, Next Thursday 3rd of March at 14:17 UTC we will be performing the first ARISS contact ever performed from the Canary Islands. Amateur Radio on the International Space Station (ARISS) Status Report February 28, 2011 1. Upcoming School Contacts An Amateur Radio on the International Space Station (ARISS) contact has been scheduled for Mackay State High School in Mackay, Queensland, Australia on Wednesday, March 2 at 01:20 UTC via Australian telebridge station VK5ZAI. The contact has been incorporated into the science curriculum covering astronomy, space exploration, physics, communications and biology. Technological Centre for Innovation in Communications (CeTIC) in Las Palmas, Spain has been scheduled for an Amateur Radio on the International Space Station (ARISS) contact on Thursday, March 3 at 14:17 UTC. Prior to the contact, workshops will be held to introduce students to satellite communications. Topics will include orbit prediction, satellite tracking and common communications systems in both the space and earth segments. In order to promote interest in space technology across the university community, the school held a contest to choose the most original and relevant questions to ask of the astronaut. 2. Recent ARISS Contacts On Tuesday, February 22, Preston North East Primary School students in Preston, Victoria, Australia spoke with astronaut Catherine Coleman, KC5ZTH via an ARISS contact made possible through telebridge station W5RRR in Houston. Over 500 students, teachers and parents were present for the event and listened as the astronaut fielded 14 students' questions during the 9.5 minute pass. The ARISS contact was the culmination of a curriculum covering Earth and the Solar System. Members of the Nishibori Eizaburo Memorial Explorer Museum Radio Club, Higashiomi, Shiga, Japan participated in an ARISS contact with Italian astronaut Paolo Nespoli, IZØJPA on Tuesday, February 22. Nespoli handled 14 questions and was answering the fifteenth question as the ISS went over the horizon. The contact highlighted lessons about the ISS, its mission and space science. 3. Astronaut Training Status On Thursday, March 3, astronauts André Kuipers, PI9ISS and Don Pettit, KD5MDT are scheduled to participate in simulated ARISS contacts with students from University of Leuven, Department of Chemistry, Heverlee, Belgium and Manordale Public School, Ottawa, Canada, respectively. The training sessions are terrestrial-based amateur radio contacts using ARISS equivalent equipment. Both astronauts are slated to fly with Expedition 30 in November 2011. 4. Amateur Radio Newsline Covers ARISSat On February 25, the Amateur Radio Newsline Report 1750 posted two items under the heading ARISSat-1 Update. An International Space Station school contact has been planned with participants at McKay State High School, Mackay MC, Queensland, Australia on 02 March. The event is scheduled to begin at approximately 01:20 UTC. The duration of the contact is approximately 9 minutes and 30 seconds. The contact will be a telebridge between NA1SS and VK5ZAI. The contact should be audible over portions of Australia. Interested parties are invited to listen in on the 145.80 MHz downlink. The contact is expected to be conducted in English. The city of Mackay is located on the north east coast of Australia in Queensland adjacent to the Great Barrier Reef. The climate is Sub Tropical. There is a large number of students in our school and in the junior years "Space" has been incorporated into the normal program in which all students are mandated to undertake. This incorporates various astronomy outcomes from years 8 to 10. Each year consists of approximately 150 to 180 students. Year 8 students undertake an individual Astronomy Survey as an assessment task in their unit 3 week "Space" unit. The students have to generate ten questions of interest to them, connected with astronomy and then they have to ask a multitude of people for responses to the questions and generate a report in which they analyse results obtained. Some of these questions may assist students in forming the basis for questions in the broadcast with the space station. Participants will ask as many of the following questions as time allows: 1. Do you currently employ any methods to combat radiation emitted from the sun? And if not is anything being tested or planned for this purpose? 2. What do you see as the future for astronauts and NASA space exploration? 3. What are the physical effects of going into space and coming home? 4. If the Earth was positioned anywhere else in our solar system, do you think life would be able to exist? 5. Do you get physically tired in space even though your body does not exert any force when you float and your muscles are not working against gravity? If you do get tired then why? 6. How much of a difference is it, sleeping in space compared to sleeping on Earth? 7. What is your opinion on the many conspiracies concerning the moon landing and do you believe any of them? 8. Does it get hot in your spacesuit? 9. Considering the chain of technical failures that contributed to a near catastrophic end to "Apollo 13" that was depicted in the film, what advances in technology and safety has occurred that gives astronauts a greater sense of safety than what they had during the early days of space travel. 10. What problems do you face doing experiments up there? 11. How different is the viewing of stars in space since there is no atmosphere around the ship. 12. What is the Station's defence against solar flares and radiation? 13. How does zero gravity affect bodily functions? 14. What systems do you have on-board the ISS to monitor the weather systems on Earth? 15. How do you go to the toilet in space? 16. Amateur Radio on the International Space Station (ARISS) Status Report February 21, 2011 1. Upcoming School Contacts Preston North East Primary School in Preston, Victoria, Australia has been scheduled for an Amateur Radio on the International Space Station (ARISS) contact on Tuesday, February 22 at 08:04 UTC via telebridge station W5RRR in Houston. Students in Grades 5 and 6 have been engaged in an integrated unit of work that focuses on Earth and the Solar System. The students have been learning why we are able to live on Earth and why other planets are not suitable to sustain human life. Nishibori Eizaburo Memorial Explorer Museum Radio Club, located in Higashiomi, Shiga, Japan has been scheduled for an Amateur Radio on the International Space Station (ARISS) contact on Tuesday, February 22 at 09:12 UTC. The radio club is an independent club that will use the museum facilities for this event. Children are learning about the ISS mission and space science and it is hoped that the contact will pique student interest in science and space technology. 2. Successful ARISS Contacts Held Students from Matsubara High School, located in Matsubara, Osaka, Japan, experienced an Amateur Radio on the International Space Station (ARISS) contact with U.S. astronaut Cady Coleman, KC5ZTH on Monday, February 14. The contact, which highlighted lessons on radios and the ISS, was attended by approximately 200 people. Media representatives from 3 newspapers, one radio station and 3 television stations, including NHK (Japan Broadcasting Corporation) covered the event. On Thursday, February 17, students attending "Claudio Varalli," and "Salvador Allende" High Schools in Milano, Italy participated in an ARISS contact with ESA astronaut Paolo Nespoli, IZØJPA on the ISS. Telebridge station W5RRR in Houston handled the connection. Varalli, which has both a technical school and a secondary school that focuses on foreign languages, has a radio club station, IZ2SHS that is used to practice languages. "Salvador Allende" emphasizes three courses of study in science, humanities and accounting. More than 100 students, teachers and visitors attended the event and listened as Nespoli fielded 16 questions posed to him by the students. Regional and local media covered the contact, which was available on EchoLink and streamed on the Web. An ARISS contact was held between youth visiting Experiencing Learning, "Imparare Sperimentando," in San Quirino, Italy and on-orbit astronaut Paolo Nespoli, IZ0JPA on Saturday, February 19 via station LU8YY in Argentina. A crowd of approximately 400 people gathered at Imparare Sperimentando, an interactive exhibition that covers a wide variety of physics experiments and science, and watched as the students asked 16 questions of the astronaut. Regional and local media covered the event. The audio was fed into EchoLink and streaming video was provided by AMSAT-Italia. 3. Kentucky Standard Says ARISS Inspires Students to Study Science The Kentucky Standard Editorial Board printed an article about the recent ARISS - Foster Heights Elementary School contact, made possible with the help of Nelson County Area Technology Center students, and how this activity inspires children to learn more about science and technology. The story talks about how the radio contact fits in with President Barack Obama's recent State of the Union address on how the nation needs to encourage students to learn and excel, especially in math and science. ARISS International Team Meeting Held The ARISS International Team met for its monthly teleconference on Tuesday, February 15. Discussions included the upcoming ARISS-I face to face meeting, as well as status reports on Columbus Module projects and ARISSat-1 plans. AMSAT - ARISSat-1 Updates On February 20, the AMSAT (Radio Amateur Satellite Corporation) News Service bulletin (ANS-051) provided a status on ARISSat-1. Roscosmos has delayed the deployment of ARISSat-1 until the next Russian EVA scheduled in July. On April 12, the crew will connect the satellite, while still inside the ISS, to an external antenna and turn it on in celebration of the 50th anniversary of Gagarin's first manned spaceflight. Wheelock will talk about his stay on the ISS, his contacts with school children and his many general contacts with hams. The event is scheduled to begin at approximately 09:12 UTC. The duration of the contact is approximately 9 minutes and 30 seconds. The contact will be direct between NA1SS and 8N3NR. The contact should be audible over Japan. Interested parties are invited to listen in on the 145.80 MHz downlink. The contact is expected to be conducted in English. Nishibori Eizaburo memorial museum Radio Club is at the Higashiomi city Shiga pref. Nishibori Eizaburo was the captain of the first South Pole area wintering observation team. We hold many activities for local children to have interests in science, every year. In order to give the interest over the universe of the children of an area this time, the children who want to communicate with ISS were looked for. Participants will ask as many of the following questions as time allows: 1. Where and when do you sleep? 2. Can you see Rigil Kentaurus at the space station? What color is it? 3. How does zero G feel? 4. How do you brush your teeth? 5. Why is space dark and black? 6. How do you know when night is coming? 7. What time is it in space now? How do you know what time it is? 8. An International Space Station school contact has been planned with participants at Preston North East Primary School, Preston, Victoria, Australia on 22 Feb. The event is scheduled to begin at approximately 08:04 UTC. The duration of the contact is approximately 9 minutes and 30 seconds. The contact will be a telebridge between NA1SS and W5RRR. Portions of the contact should be audible over the U.S. Interested parties are invited to listen in on the 145.80 MHz downlink. The contact is expected to be conducted in English. Preston North East Primary School has a current enrollment of 300 students. Our School offers a challenging and comprehensive curriculum that equips children with the necessary skills and knowledge to become well-adjusted adults and contributing members of the community. Information & Communication Technology continues to be a high priority at the school. Interactive whiteboards are in several classrooms with plans to purchase new ones. Students also access inter-school sport, a school camp and a variety of excursions which utilise the school bus. An International Space Station school contact has been planned with participants at Experiencing Learning "Imparare Sperimentando", San Quirino, Italy on 19 Feb. "Impara Sperimentando" (Experiencing Learning) is an interactive exposure of physics experiments and science targeted observation of all aspects of natural phenomena, located in Pordenone, North-East Italy. The purposes of the exhibition are: share expertise and experience from research environments and schools; share skills and experiences of different schools; intervene in the daily teaching; carry out activities involving all visitors and especially students and schools; use new technologies in a meaningful way and the sensors on-line; enable the laboratory work; and finally, curiosity and provide scientifically correct information to every citizen. "Varalli" is both a Technical Touristic School and a Secondary School with an emphasis on foreign languages (Linguistic Liceo). The school is inside the Campus of Puecher Centre in the south part of Milan. During the five years course the students attend the study of English, French, German and Spanish languages. Technical Tourist School has 474 student while Linguistic Liceo has 174 student. For the school year 2010/2011 the school is planning the formation of 34 classes. Besides curricular activities, the students of the school attend meeting, seminars, conferences, visits, theatrical performances and exhibition. Amateur Radio on the International Space Station (ARISS) Status Report February 14, 2011 1. Upcoming School Contacts An ARISS contact has been scheduled for Istituto di Istruzione Superiore "Claudio Varalli," in Milano, Italy on Thursday, February 17 at 10:33 UTC via telebridge station W5RRR in Houston. I.I.S. Varalli has both a technical school and a secondary school which concentrates in foreign languages. Prior to the ARISS activity, students will learn about space exploration and wireless technology, and will use the school's amateur radio club station IZ2SHS to practice speaking in English, French, German and Spanish. Experiencing Learning, "Imparare Sperimentando," in San Quirino, Italy has been scheduled for an Amateur Radio on the International Space Station (ARISS) contact on Saturday, February 19 at 11:43 UTC via station LU8YY in Argentina. "Imparare Sperimentando" is an interactive exhibition that covers a wide variety of physics experiments and science appropriate for people of all ages and levels of study. It is meant to represent a new method to teach physics and science, to attract young people and adults in a course often seen as boring or difficult. The exhibits offer a way to learn by trial and error, playing and having fun. 2. Successful ARISS Contacts Held this Week On Thursday, February 10, an Amateur Radio on the International Space Station (ARISS) contact was held between astronaut Paolo Nespoli, IZØJPA and Istituto Comprensivo Statale "E. Fermi - A. Oggioni," Villasanta, Monza Brianza, Italy via telebridge station VK5ZAI in Australia. During the ISS pass Nespoli answered 19 questions and exchanged greetings with the youth. An audience of approximately 200 students and others were on hand for the contact and afterwards, students sang the well known hit "Volare" which means "To fly." Regional and local media and newspapers covered the event and streaming video, provided by AMSAT-Italia, received 80 connections. On-orbit astronaut Cady Coleman, KC5ZTH participated in an ARISS contact with Lake Silver Elementary School students in Orlando, Florida on February 10 via radio station LU8YY in Argentina. Coleman answered 14 questions as a large crowd of students, parents and guests gathered for the event. The school put together a comprehensive education plan to compliment this ARISS contact. An ARISS contact was held between Lillestrøm videregående skole, Lillestrøm, Norway and Cady Coleman, KC5ZTH on the ISS on Friday, February 11. Station W5RRR in Houston, Texas handled the radio connection. Over 150 people assembled for the event and listened as the astronaut fielded eight questions, mainly in Norwegian. The contact was the highlight of a science and applied technology curriculum. National Institute for Astrophysics - Astronomical Observatory of Bologna, Bologna, Italy took part in an ARISS contact on Saturday, February 12 via telebridge station LU8YY in Argentina. Italian astronaut Paolo Nespoli, IZØJPA participated from the ISS, answering 16 questions. Approximately 150 people were present for the contact which occurred during the Bologna science festival, "Scienza in Piazza," held February 3 - 13. The festival focuses on schools, promoting science through hands-on exhibitions and conferences and is backed by the Italian Space Agency (ASI). Regional and local media and newspapers covered the event. The audio from all contacts was available on EchoLink and IRLP (Internet Radio Linking Project). 3. AMSAT Announces Changes in Plans for ARISSat-1 On February 13, the AMSAT (Radio Amateur Satellite Corporation) News Service bulletin (ANS-044) provided a status on ARISSat-1. Over the past week, RSC-Energia made a series of changes to ARISSat-1 plans which included testing the satellite on the ISS and postponing its deployment until July of this year. Two other related items posted in this bulletin included information to prepare for ARISSat SSTV transmissions and educational projects which were submitted and stored on the satellite. An International Space Station school contact has been planned with participants at Matsubara High School, Matsubara, Osaka, Japan on 14 Feb. The event is scheduled to begin at approximately 12:00 UTC. The duration of the contact is approximately 9 minutes and 30 seconds. The contact will be direct between NA1SS and 8N3L. The contact should be audible over Japan. Interested parties are invited to listen in on the 145.80 MHz downlink. The contact is expected to be conducted in English. The student of the Matsubara high school and the member of the Kansai amateur radio league recruit the students from nearby elementary and junior high schools. And they teach the ISS and the radio. An International Space Station school contact has been planned with participants at National Institute for Astrophysics - Astronomical Observatory of Bologna, Italy on 12 Feb. The event is scheduled to begin at approximately 15:07 UTC. The duration of the contact is approximately 9 minutes and 30 seconds. The contact will be a telebridge between NA1SS and LU8YY. The contact should be audible over southern areas of South America. Interested parties are invited to listen in on the 145.80 MHz downlink. The contact is expected to be conducted in Italian. The Astronomical Observatory of Bologna is one of the twenty research structures of the Italian National Institute for Astrophysics (INAF). Besides the scientific research, covering a wide range of astrophysical topics, Astronomical Observatory of Bologna is involved in operational and educational activities, and since several years it has started a collaboration with the Marino Golinelli Foundation, that organizes "La Scienza in Piazza", a square for Science. This is an activity addressed to the school, in order to promote the diffusion of science through hands-on exhibitions and conferences. The goal is to carry Science through cities, towns, villages, transforming them in open air Science Centres. Last year the event had a number of about 50.000 visitors. This year the event will be held from the 3rd to the 13th of February, with the patronage of the Italian Space Agency (ASI). Lillestrom Videregaende Skole (Lillestrom Upper Secondary School) is an institution in its region. The school was founded in 1884 and has developed into a modern, highly esteemed theoretical school (tertiary college) offering 16 - 19 year-olds a wide range of alternatives within social sciences, natural sciences and languages. The school is basically a traditional grammar school, but over the last 15 years two popular branches, media and music/dance/drama, have been added. Lillestrom videregaende skole offers IB (International Baccalaureate). We promote ourselves as a modern school specializing in natural sciences. The staff counts 130 teachers and administrative personnel. Approximately 800 students attend Lillestrom videregaende skole. The school is located in the township of Lillestrom app. 12 miles north of Oslo and 20 miles from Oslo Airport Gardermoen. We are thus centrally located with first-rate communications. Our region is a research and scientific hub with two of the nation's most distinguished scientific institutions as well as a university branch, all located close to the school. Upcoming ARISS contact with Lake Silver Elementary School, Orlando, Florida

An International Space Station school contact has been planned with participants at Lake Silver Elementary, Orlando, FL on 10 Feb. The event is scheduled to begin at approximately 15:51 UTC. The duration of the contact is approximately 9 minutes and 30 seconds. The contact will be a telebridge between NA1SS and LU8YY. The contact should be audible over southern areas of South America. Interested parties are invited to listen in on the 145.80 MHz downlink. The contact is expected to be conducted in English. Lake Silver Elementary is nestled right outside of downtown Orlando, Florida in a charming neighborhood called College Park. Being over fifty years old, the school as well the surrounding neighborhood is rich in history. Currently, the school has a student body of 641 and contains grade levels ranging from pre-K to fifth grade. Their age ranges from three to thirteen years old. The school's contact person is Eric Yuhasz. He is a math/science lab teacher. The preparations are proceeding quite well at this point. The students and parents are excited. In their math/science lab, the students are doing numerous activities to get familiar with the ISS such as going outside and measuring the length of the space station. Additionally, the contact mentor is scheduled to come out to the school and educate the students on how the contact will work and allow the students to see and use a ham radio. They competed to be chosen as one of the twelve "askers" by submitting their two questions to their homeroom teachers. Mr. Yuhasz worked with their homeroom teachers to choose the best questions based on relevance and the students ability to speak in front of a large audience. The 12 students have been chosen and their parents have been contacted. Mr. Yuhasz has met with the contact mentor to go over any more last minute details. The students will begin doing practice runs of the contact starting next week. Multiple invitation letters will and have been sent home to the parents of all the students to get more parental involvement in the contact. Also, a press release will be sent out to the local four major television stations as well as the Orlando Sentinel. Also, there will be coverage on hand for the local College Park newspaper. Participants will ask as many of the following questions as time allows: 1. How is energy collected and stored on the ISS? 2. What does it feel like to walk or be in space? 3. What fun activities do you do up in space? 4. What are you working on in space? 5. How do you keep yourself clean? 6. How do you exercise in space? 7. What is a space suit made out of to withstand that kind of pressure? 8. How do you eat in space without choking? 9. What protects you from the suns thermal energy or the suns heat in the ISS? 10. When you are in outer space and the earth looks peaceful, what do you think about when you realize it is not as peaceful as it looks? 11. How do you sleep in space? 12. What training did it take to become an astronaut? 13. How are the astronauts able to attach the new parts of the ISS when they are orbiting the earth very, very fast? 14. With astronauts being in space, how is it making our world a better place? 15. What space foods do you eat? 16. What inspired you to become an astronaut? 17. How do you cook food up there? 18. How does being in space affect your body after a long period of time? 19. How do you prepare for going into space? 20. How fast do you lose bone and muscle mass in space, if you don't exercise? 21. Would you describe for me what it feels like to blast off? What do you hear, feel, and for how long? 22. What do you think would happen if you had a can of soda and shook it up and then opened it in space? 23. How do you go to the bathroom in space?
