An International Space Station school contact has been planned with participants at Shri Krishna Vithyaalayam Matric School, Pollachi (TK), India on 12 March. The event is scheduled to begin at approximately 13:34 UTC. The duration of the contact is approximately 9 minutes and 30 seconds. The contact will be a telebridge between OR4ISS and IK1SLD. The contact should be audible over Italy and portions of Europe. Interested parties are invited to listen in on the 145.80 MHz downlink. The contact is expected to be conducted in English. The school is located in rural part of Tamilnadu state in India. The school has got a global partnership program with Westborough school in UK. Mr.M.K.Anantha Ganesan, the founder and the Principal visited The Westborough school in September 2009. He is an amateur radio operator (VU3GPF). He visited the Chelmsford Amateur Radio Society and is made a honorary member. Anamalai Amateur Radio Club functions from our school. Participants will ask as many of the following questions as time allows: 1. How many space walks are allowed and what purpose do space walks serve? 2. An International Space Station school contact has been planned with participants at Scuola Media Statale "Francesco d'Assisi", Modugno, Italy and Scuola 3 Circolo Didattico Don Lorenzo Milani, Modugno, Italy on 12 March. The event is scheduled to begin at approximately 10:22 UTC. The duration of the contact is approximately 9 minutes and 30 seconds. The contact will be direct between IR0ISS and IZ7RTN. The contact should be audible over Italy. Interested parties are invited to listen in on the 145.80 MHz downlink. The contact is expected to be conducted in Italian or English. The "Francesco d'Assisi" Middle School is located in Modugno, a little town in the hinterland from the Adriatic coast not too far from Bari. The school is attended by about 300 students, aged from 11 to 14. The school also offers a variety of elective courses in the early afternoon, i.e. extracurricular activities. Priority is given to additional science, mathematics and Italian language courses, sports programs (such as volley), chorus and musical education, visual arts, publishing (student newspaper), preparation to mathematics competitions such as the annual "Kangaroo of Mathematics". The school has a gym, a small library and a number of laboratories: science lab, computer labs, graphic arts lab, music lab. The Primary School 3° Didactic Circle Be them "Don Lorenzo Milani" is situated in Modugno (BA), inner a city small not a lot far away from the Barium city (9 Km) chief town of the Puglia. The school is made up of 6 plessi: 3 of school of Infancy and 3 of Primary School. In 2010/2011 the school accommodates 1,039 pupils of which 613 of Primary School of age between the 6 and 10 years uniforms in 32 classes, and 426 pupils of School of Infancy of age between the 3 and 6 years uniforms in 17 sections. The pupils attend for 6 days to the week, the timetable for every lesson to the day are 5 hours of 60 minutes of the following matters Italian, mathematical, sciences, geography, English, computer science laboratory, music, image, motoria activity. RESCHEDULED CONTACT RELEASE An International Space Station school contact has been planned with participants at Schulhaus Dorf, Richterswil, Switzerland on 8 March. The event is scheduled to begin at approximately 13:24 UTC. The duration of the contact is approximately 9 minutes and 30 seconds. The contact will be direct between OR4ISS and HB9IRM. The contact should be audible over Switzerland and adjacent areas. Interested parties are invited to listen in on the 145.80 MHz downlink. The contact is expected to be conducted in English. Richterswil is situated at the lake of Zurich. Although it is not very big it has 4 train stations and a direct access to the highway, which is part of the national street system. Some of the approx. 11'000 inhabitants work in Zurich, which is about 30 kilometers away. Others are employed at one of the local firms or have jobs in the neighboring towns and villages. There are five schools and several kindergardens. Richterswil hosts its own museum and many different organizations such as sports clubs, a women's club, a parent's organization, a theatre group, several choirs and more. Every year on the second Saturday in November the "Räbechilbi" takes place. It is a huge turnip fair (actually the biggest in the world), where pictures made of turnips and lit by candles, are pulled through the town by school children and the members of our many clubs. This event is always visited by thousands of people, locals as well as tourists. At our school we teach about 130 children aged from 10 to 13 years. They are split up into six classes (grades 4 to 6). Staff includes 8 teachers, a social worker and 2 janitors. Our school is situated next to the church and the hospital. Our class takes new challenges very willingly. As our goal we would like them to get more information about space and space travel. We intend them to become aware of a wonderful and interesting world around ours. As non native speakers it is also a good opportunity of practicing English - a language our students learned during the last two years. RESCHEDULED CONTACT RELEASE An International Space Station school contact has been planned with participants at ICS "Marco D'oggiono", Oggiono, I-23848, Italy on 8 March. The event is scheduled to begin at approximately 11:50 UTC. The duration of the contact is approximately 9 minutes and 30 seconds. The contact will be direct between IR0ISS and IZ2STR. The contact should be audible over Italy. Interested parties are invited to listen in on the 145.80 MHz downlink. The contact is expected to be conducted in Italian or English. The Marco d'Oggiono school is located in the very centre of Oggiono, a small town of about 8,000 people near Lecco. The school is attended by 1140 students: 122 in the infant school, 630 in the elementary school, and 388 in the middle school. The Middle School has a Science lab, a Music room, two Art rooms and two well-equipped computer rooms, one with an interactive board. There is a gym, a canteen, a students library and a teachers library. In the Middle School we have a team of 48 teachers. The subjects studied are the following: Italian, History, Geography, Maths, Science, ICT, Technology, Art, Music and the following foreign languages: English, French, German and Spanish. Amateur Radio on the International Space Station (ARISS) Status Report March 7, 2011 1. Upcoming School Contact Shri Krishna Vithyaalayam Matric School, Pollachi (TK), India has been scheduled for an Amateur Radio on the International Space Station (ARISS) contact on Saturday, March 12 at 13:34 UTC via station IK1SLD in Italy. The Anamalai Amateur Radio Club located at the school has been teaching students about the radio. In addition, the astronomy club organized sky watching sessions, and a U.S. scientist visited the school to talk about satellites and the ISS. The ARISS contact will underscore the lessons learned in these activities. 2. Recent ARISS Contacts On Wednesday, March 2 an ARISS contact was held between on-orbit astronaut Paolo Nespoli, IZØJPA and Mackay State High School students in Queensland, Australia via telebridge station VK5ZAI, Australia. All 16 questions were answered. One of the approximately 200 people in attendance was the mayor of Mackay who asked the ARISS team to "keep up the good work - you are doing a great job inspiring our students." He expressed his amazement on how well timed and extremely enjoyable the contact was. Three television stations covered the radio hookup and snippets of the event were broadcast on at least 2 regional TV channels all afternoon following the contact. The Mackay Daily Mercury wrote a story on the event: http://www.dailymercury.com.au/story/2011/03/03/historic-link-to-space-mack… Technological Centre for Innovation in Communications (CeTIC) in Las Palmas de Gran Canaria, Spain experienced a successful ARISS contact on Thursday, March 3. Astronaut Paolo Nespoli, IZØJPA answered all 20 questions posed to him by the students. The contact supplemented lessons on orbit prediction, satellite tracking and common communications systems. Victory Primary School in Nelson, New Zealand participated in an ARISS contact on Thursday, March 3 via telebridge station W6SRJ in California. Cady Coleman, KC5ZTH answered 17 questions prepared by the students. One additional query was answered with the help of shuttle crew member Alvin Drew. The contact was the culmination of a science curriculum focused on space and technology. 3. NASA Posts Article on Ten Years of ARISS Contacts NASA posted a feature story on the 10th anniversary of ARISS contacts to its Web site. AMSAT on ARISSat-1 On March 6, the AMSAT (Radio Amateur Satellite Corporation) News Service bulletin (ANS-065) provided a status on ARISSat-1. I may be a bit off topic, but since on April 12th Arissat-1 will be urned on to celebrate Yuri Gagarin's 50 years of the first man in space, what about Alan B. Shepard, which will be on May 5th? An International Space Station school contact has been planned with participants at Schulhaus Dorf, Richterswil, Switzerland on 7 March. The event is scheduled to begin at approximately 14:34 UTC. The duration of the contact is approximately 9 minutes and 30 seconds. The contact will be direct between OR4ISS and HB9IRM. The contact should be audible over Switzerland and adjacent areas. Interested parties are invited to listen in on the 145.80 MHz downlink. The contact is expected to be conducted in English. Richterswil is situated at the lake of Zurich. Although it is not very big it has 4 train stations and a direct access to the highway, which is part of the national street system. Some of the approx. 11'000 inhabitants work in Zurich, which is about 30 kilometers away. Others are employed at one of the local firms or have jobs in the neighboring towns and villages. There are five schools and several kindergardens. Richterswil hosts its own museum and many different organizations such as sports clubs, a women's club, a parent's organization, a theatre group, several choirs and more. Every year on the second Saturday in November the "Räbechilbi" takes place. It is a huge turnip fair (actually the biggest in the world), where pictures made of turnips and lit by candles, are pulled through the town by school children and the members of our many clubs. This event is always visited by thousands of people, locals as well as tourists. At our school we teach about 130 children aged from 10 to 13 years. They are split up into six classes (grades 4 to 6). Staff includes 8 teachers, a social worker and 2 janitors. Our school is situated next to the church and the hospital. Our class takes new challenges very willingly. As our goal we would like them to get more information about space and space travel. We intend them to become aware of a wonderful and interesting world around ours. As non native speakers it is also a good opportunity of practicing English - a language our students learned during the last two years. Participants will ask as many of the following questions as time allows: 1. How old do you have to be to go into space? What are physical requirements, if any? 2. How do you feel when the rocket launches? 3. How do you like the food in the space and how do you prepare it? 4. What's your favourite movie? 5. Do you have children, a family or a wife? Do you miss them? 6. How does it feel in zero gravity? 7. Was the training difficult? 8. What are your plans when this mission is over? 9. Why did you choose to become an astronaut? 10. How do you feel, when you return to earth? 11. How do you feel spending Christmas in space? 12. Was it difficult to become an astronaut and to pass the exams? 13. An International Space Station school contact has been planned with participants at ICS "Marco D'oggiono", Oggiono, I-23848, Italy on 7 March. The event is scheduled to begin at approximately 12:59 UTC. The duration of the contact is approximately 9 minutes and 30 seconds. The contact will be direct between IR0ISS and IZ2STR. The contact should be audible over Italy. Interested parties are invited to listen in on the 145.80 MHz downlink. The contact is expected to be conducted in Italian or English. The Marco d'Oggiono school is located in the very centre of Oggiono, a small town of about 8,000 people near Lecco. The school is attended by 1140 students: 122 in the infant school, 630 in the elementary school, and 388 in the middle school. The Middle School has a Science lab, a Music room, two Art rooms and two well-equipped computer rooms, one with an interactive board. There is a gym, a canteen, a students library and a teachers library. In the Middle School we have a team of 48 teachers. The subjects studied are the following: Italian, History, Geography, Maths, Science, ICT, Technology, Art, Music and the following foreign languages: English, French, German and Spanish. An International Space Station school contact has been planned with participants at Victory Primary School, Nelson, New Zealand on 03 March. The event is scheduled to begin at approximately 23:33 UTC. The duration of the contact is approximately 9 minutes and 30 seconds. The contact will be a telebridge between NA1SS and W6SRJ. The contact should be audible over the west coast of the U.S. Interested parties are invited to listen in on the 145.80 MHz downlink. The contact is expected to be conducted in English. Victory Primary School is a decile-3 primary school of 400 students, providing Year 1 to 6 mainstream and bilingual Maori education. In doing so, it practices The Victory Pathway, which is an interactive approach to producing positively achieving young people, developing strong families and building on social capital in the Victory community. The school promotes a Home/School Partnership programme to enable parents to support their children in their studies. Victory Primary has students from all over the world and cultural diversity is recognized and celebrated every day. This is one of the reasons we believe a contact with the ISS will enrich all of our lives. Participants will ask as many of the following questions as time allows: 1. An International Space Station school contact has been planned with participants at Technological Centre for Innovation in Communications (CeTIC) Las Palmas de Gran Canaria, Las Palmas, 35017, Spain on 03 March. The event is scheduled to begin at approximately 14:17 UTC. The duration of the contact is approximately 9 minutes and 30 seconds. The contact will be direct between OR4ISS and EG8ISS. The contact should be audible over the Canary Islands and adjacent area. Interested parties are invited to listen in on the 145.80 MHz downlink. The contact is expected to be conducted in English. The Institute for Technological Development and Research in Communications (IDeTIC®), formerly known as CeTIC, is a Research and Development centre at the University of Las Palmas de Gran Canaria (ULPGC), which was founded in 2006. Formerly the CeTIC was composed of three research divisions in communications engineering with more than 10 years worth of experience, to whom were later added two new divisions in early 2009. Its main goal is transferring technology between companies and the university and, as part of it, to teach and train students in communications. Our staff includes researchers (both internal and third-party), PhD, MSc and BSc students, along with other collaborating staff members. In the last 5 years our research strategies and results have been supported by more than 200 publications on scientific magazines and international conferences. All of them endorsed by our participation in more than 50 research projects, most being joint collaborations amongst international institutions and cutting-edge technological companies. What is the temperature in degrees Celsius inside and outside the station? 11. Have you seen the Canary Islands from space? 12. How are circadian rhythms affected by living in orbit? 13. Does food taste the same as here? 14. What will you miss most from space when you'll be back on Earth? 15. How long do you think it will take to inhabit other planets? 16. If you established communications with a U.F.O. and you only had three words to describe humanity, which ones would you choose? 17. What would happen if you found space debris on your way? 18. What would you do if any member of the crew in the spaceship got seriously sick? 19. What is more important for the space trip: physical training or psychological preparation? 20.
