An International Space Station school contact has been planned with participants at John XXIII College, Perth, Western Australia, Australia on 11 April. The event is scheduled to begin at approximately 07:17 UTC. The duration of the contact is approximately 9 minutes and 30 seconds. The contact will be a telebridge between NA1SS and W6SRJ. The contact should be audible over the west coast of the U.S. Interested parties are invited to listen in on the 145.80 MHz downlink. The contact is expected to be conducted in English. John XXIII College operates under the authority of the Catholic Archbishop of Perth. Religious education and Catholic teaching and forms of worship are central in the life of the College. In this context, the College welcomes persons of other denominations who are committed to supporting the Catholic ethos of the College (subject to the availability of places). Boys and girls associate together in classes, in activities and socially. The College has a sound reputation for academic and co curricular achievements; teaching and class work reflect this emphasis. The programs, staff and resources provide for wide ranging interests and abilities of all students. Participants will ask as many of the following questions as time allows: 1. Do you have a gym on board to maintain your muscle strength? 8. Did you do physical and mental training before going in to space? If so, what sort of things did you do? 9. Does food taste different in space and what food do you eat? 10. Do you undertake experiments with food to plan for long-term missions into deep space? 11. If any of you have been on board before.....What was it like when you returned to earth? 12. Being an astronaut and seeing the world from space must change your view of life? Has it changed yours? If so, how? 13. How did you get to be chosen as a space station astronaut? 14. What inspired you to become an astronaut? 15. You must spend a long time in space. April 8, 2011 To All RADIO AMATEURS BID: $ANS-098.01 SILVER SPRING, MARYLAND (AMSAT News Service) While awaiting deployment from the International Space Station (ISS) in late July, an amateur radio satellite specifically designed to in- terest students in scientific and technological careers will be activated and begin transmissions from the ISS in mid-April of this year. Transmissions are scheduled to begin Monday around 14:30 UTC April 11 and ending Wednesday around 10:30 UTC on April 13. Electronic certificates of the event will be available to those summitting reception reports to: Gagarin(a)arissat1.org. These transmissions will commemorate 50 years since the flight of Russian Cosmonaut Yuri Gagarin as the first human to enter outer space. The satellite (called ARISSat-1, RadioSkaf-V) will send telemetry, SSTV images, and messages of goodwill as it orbits earth inside the ISS. ARISSat-1 is a cooperative effort between AMSAT, ARISS (Amateur Radio on the International Space Station,) RSC-Energia (The Russian Space Agency) and NASA. The design, development and construction of the satellite was done by AMSAT volunteers. Original plans call- ed for the satellite to be housed inside an old Russian spacesuit. But when the suit became unavailable, a spaceframe was developed to house the radio equipment and solar panels. The new satellite was named ARISSat-1. Other names for the spacecraft are RadioSkaf-V and Kedr. The transmitted callsign will be RS01S. In order to operate inside the ISS, ARISSat-1 will be connected to an external amateur radio antenna already mounted on the outer sur- face of the space station. The craft will use its own battery for operation, therefore it will be in low power mode. As a result, listeners can expect 40-60 second "ON" periods followed by two-minute "OFF" periods to save battery power. To listen for ARISSat-1 voice signals during this special event, FM receivers should be tuned to 145.950 MHz. Specific only to this event, planning is currently underway to provide an additional FM broadcast downlink at 437.550 MHz. Even though the satellite will only have an output of 250 mW on 2 meters, a standard FM handy talkie equipped with a quarter-wave whip antenna should be able to receive the voice ID, voice telemetry and greeting messages as the craft passes overhead. SSTV transmissions may also be demodulated and viewed using a free downloadable program such as MMSSTV that is available at: http://mmhamsoft.amateur-radio.ca/pages/mmsstv.php. For Mac users, Multiscan2 is available at: http://web.me.com/kd6cji/MacSSTV/MultiScan.html. Those planning to monitor voice broadcasts from ARISSat-1 are request- ed to make note of the telemetry battery voltage values and UTC time, and then submit their records to Gagarin(a)arissat1.org. Digital tele- metry will be sent at 145.920 MHz. Given the low duty cycle of the spacecraft, those planning to receive the digital telemetry are en- couraged to record the entire signal band using the FunCube dongle or SDR-IQ receivers. Software for demodulating the BPSK-1000 telemetry is available at: http://www.arissattlm.org/download/ARISSatTLM_050_Setup.exe A software user guide will be available soon. This special period of operation is only expected to continue during the two-day 50 year commemoration of Gagarin's famous mission. The actual deployment of ARISSat-1, first announced for February 2011, is now expected to take place during an EVA scheduled for late July, 2011. After it is deployed from the International Space Station, ARISSat-1 is expected to be in orbit for a period of up to six months. An International Space Station school contact has been planned with participants at Scuola Primaria III Circolo "Tiro a Segno", Fermo, I-63023, Italy, and Scuola Primaria "Viale della Vittoria", Montecosaro, I-62010, Italy on 6 April. The event is scheduled to begin at approximately 07:10 UTC. The duration of the contact is approximately 9 minutes and 30 seconds. The contact will be direct between IR0ISS and I6KZR. The contact should be audible over Italy and adjacent areas. Interested parties are invited to listen in on the 145.80 MHz downlink. The contact is expected to be conducted in Italian. The Primary School "Tiro a Segno" (Shooting) is located in Fermo, Marche Region, Italy.The project called "New technologies" is mentioned in the annual plane of work that in Italian schools. The project concerns a correct approach with technology and the children are involved in an educational path of research and experiments. Members of the local RADIO AMATEURS club teach our students the importance Ham Radio activities and the use of telegraph. Montecosaro is a little town that is in the province of Macerata, along the valley of Chienti. The school "Viale della Vittoria" provides an opportunity to learn the knowledge offered by the Ministry programs and learn how to rework them so that they become knowledge that make life serene and conscious experience. To increase the educational offer, propose projects such as computer science, the game of chess engines, pottery, art and expression. Amateur Radio on the International Space Station (ARISS) Status Report April 4, 2011 1. Upcoming School Contact Two Italian schools in Italy, Scuola Primaria III Circolo "Tiro a Segno" in Fermo and Scuola Primaria "Viale della Vittoria" in Montecosaro, have been scheduled for an Amateur Radio on the International Space Station (ARISS) contact on Wednesday, April 6 at 07:10 UTC. Students have been learning about technology through an educational path of research and experiments. Amateur radio operators from Fermo have been teaching the youth the importance and use of telegraphy. 2. Recent ARISS Contacts Lehman High School in Kyle, Texas participated in an ARISS contact with ISS astronaut Cady Coleman, KC5ZTH on Tuesday, March 29. Students researched and studied the topic of space travel to prepare their questions and were able to get 13 answered before the ISS went over the horizon. The students used the high school's own satellite tracking station for the contact. MyFOXAustin.com posted a story on the event: http://www.myfoxaustin.com/dpp/top_stories/Lehman-HS-Students-Tal-to-Astron… On Wednesday, March 30, students from Canterbury High School, Ottawa, Ontario, Canada took part in an ARISS contact with astronaut Paolo Nespoli, IZØJPA on the ISS. Approximately 450 students and administrators attended the event and listened as Nespoli handled 10 questions from the students. The contact was included in the Grades 9 and 10 curricula covering Earth and Space Science, Scientific Investigation Skills and Career Exploration. The Ottawa Citizen ran an article on the contact. http://www.ottawacitizen.com/technology/Canterbury+students+enjoy+this+worl… An ARISS contact was held on Saturday, April 2 between on-orbit astronaut Paolo Nespoli, IZØJPA and students from Istituto Tecnico Industriale Statale "Leonardo da Vinci" and Istituto Comprensivo Scolastico "G. Tedeschi," Pratola Peligna, Italy. Students from both schools posed 23 questions to the astronaut over two ISS passes. The contact highlighted the telecommunications curriculum, and was supported by local radio amateurs. The event was attended by over 100 people including regional and local media representatives. 3. ARRL Covers Ham Astronauts The American Radio Relay League (ARRL) posted a story in its March 31 ARRL Letter about two astronauts who recently earned their ham licenses. AMSAT Posts News on ARISSat, Hamvention On April 3, AMSAT (Radio Amateur Satellite Corporation) posted ARISS-related items in its News Service bulletin (ANS-093). The first story covered the anticipated activation of ARISSat-1 which will occur over April 11 - 13 in celebration of the 50th anniversary of Yuri Gagarin's first space flight. Another story was about the upcoming Dayton Hamvention on May 20 - 22 which will feature an ARISSat prototype and will be attended by astronaut Doug Wheelock. NASA Article on ARISS Telebridge Station NASA wrote an article about Sacred Hearts Academy, an all-girls school in Hawaii that has a telebridge station which can be used to link schools with the ISS astronauts during ARISS contacts. An International Space Station school contact has been planned with participants at Rosebud Secondary College, Rosebud, Victoria, Australia on 4 April. The event is scheduled to begin at approximately 09:04 UTC. The duration of the contact is approximately 9 minutes and 30 seconds. The contact will be a telebridge between NA1SS and W6SRJ. The contact should be audible over the western and middle areas of the U.S. Interested parties are invited to listen in on the 145.80 MHz downlink. The contact is expected to be conducted in English. Rosebud Secondary College is a large Secondary College of 1480 students. The College is located on the Mornington Peninsula, Victoria, Australia, approximately 85 km south of Melbourne, in a seaside location on the edge of Port Phillip Bay. The College enjoys an enviable and well earned reputation for excellence in the southern peninsula community. Participants will ask as many of the following questions as time allows: 1. Have you always wanted to be an astronaut since childhood? 2. What or who inspired you to become an astronaut? 3. How long did you train before being selected for launch? 4. What was on your mind when you started your journey to space? 5. What methods do you use to deal with bone and muscle decay in Zero Gravity? 6. What are your current research tasks and what future real world applications could be developed from the research? 7. Can you see pollution (green house gases) from space and, if you can, are some countries worse than others? 8. Do stars look different from the International space station compared to Earth and if so how? 9. After you come back to Earth, are there any side effects and if there are, are they painful or bad? 10. Has being in space changed any of your beliefs or your perspective on life, or is it just part of a job? 11. How do you go to the toilet in space? 12. In ten words, please describe, what it is like in outer space? 13. When astronauts sweat does the sweat stick to their face rather than drip down? 14. Does food taste the same in space as it does on earth? 15. What's the biggest threat to you when you are in space? 16. What is liftoff like? 17. Do you ever get time off, if so, what do you do in your free time? 18. Does the sun come up east, west, north or south on the International space station? 19. What is the most dangerous thing that has occurred for you up in space and how did you deal with it? 20. If you have a partner, were they okay with you leaving them for the long period? The event is scheduled to begin at approximately 07:52 UTC. The duration of the contact is approximately 9 minutes and 30 seconds. The contact will be direct between IR0ISS and IQ5LU. The contact should be audible over Italy. Interested parties are invited to listen in on the 145.80 MHz downlink. The contact is expected to be conducted in Italian. State Technical Industrial Institute is named to Enrico Fermi and is located in Lucca, Northern Tuscany. 5 years courses in Mechanics, Electrotechnics, Electronics, Information and Communication Tecnology with several laboratories. About 700 students aged 15-19. They had an Amateur Radio Club with the callsign IK5YOI (license expired). Participants will ask as many of the following questions (translated) as time allows: 1. What is physical and mental training of astronauts before being sent on a mission? 2. How long does it take to get used to the absolute lack of gravity? 3. The daily requirement of calories is the same as on earth? How much you need in the space? 4. How is waste disposed on ISS? 5. What experiments do you make in this space mission? 6. How do you manage to dock the space ship at the ISS? 7. Is there a risk of collisions with space debris? 8. Does so long stay in a zero gravity environment lead to physical problems? 9. How is the space station is shielded from cosmic radiations? 10. Why the ISS flies 350 km above our planet surface? 11. How long a group of people can live in space in an restricted environment? 12. What do you miss most about being so long on ISS? 13. What is the atmospheric pressure inside the space station? 14. How do you maintain a comfortable environment on the ISS, with enough oxygen, moisture, bacteria, etc? 15. What kind of materials is the ISS built with? 16. What is the purpose of the MagISStra mission? 17. How is heat distributed inside the space suit you wear when you go into the outer space? 18. Is the probability of collisions with other orbiting bodies a real danger? 19. If you get an internal or external fault how do you proceed to fix it? 20. In what way mankind can get advantage of the results of research done during those long space missions? 21. How long does the human body takes to adapt to change on ISS first and then to return to earth? 22. Could the results obtained from the experiments on the ISS be in preparation for a future mission to Mars? 23. Do you have a "lifeboat", that allows you to leave the ISS in case of emergency? Hi: Since posting a query and no reponse, I've decided to do a Special Event for the 50 years of the First Man in Space and 30 years of the first Space Shuttle Launch. It will be on HF and locally on 2 meters. It has been posted on QRZ.com. Also if you know of any other activation, let me know, I assume that in Russia there will be an operation of some kind.
