An International Space Station school contact has been planned with participants at Istituto Sociale, Torino, Italy on 14 April. The event is scheduled to begin at approximately 08:49 UTC. The duration of the contact is approximately 9 minutes and 30 seconds. The contact will be a telebridge between NA1SS and K6DUE. The contact should be audible over portions of the northern U.S. and Canada. Interested parties are invited to listen in on the 145.80 MHz downlink. The contact is expected to be conducted in Italian. The "Istituto Sociale" is a Catholic school considered as equivalent of state, located in Turin. The institute is composed of primary, middle schools and high schools classical and scientific. The students involved in the ARISS project belong to middle school. The school consider very important that this activity takes place at a school in Turin, since many modules of the ISS have been built by Thales Alenia Space in Turin. Participants will ask as many of the following questions (translated) as time allows: 1. Why have you decided to become an astronaut? 2. What are the criteria to select an astronaut? An International Space Station school contact has been planned with participants at Hopewell Ave Public School, Ottawa, ON, Canada on 13 April. The event is scheduled to begin at approximately 16:10 UTC. The duration of the contact is approximately 9 minutes and 30 seconds. The contact will be a telebridge between NA1SS and WH6PN. The contact should be audible over Hawaii and adjacent areas. Interested parties are invited to listen in on the 145.80 MHz downlink. The contact is expected to be conducted in English. Nestled in Old Ottawa South and the Glebe Community. We have a student population of approximately 950 students, and a staff of more than 70. Our students strive for excellence in their academics and extra curricular activities. Amateur Radio on the International Space Station (ARISS) Status Report April 11, 2011 1. Upcoming School Contacts Hopewell Ave Public School, Ottawa, Ontario, Canada has been scheduled for an Amateur Radio on the International Space Station (ARISS) contact on Wednesday, April 13 at 16:10 UTC. Telebridge station WH6PN in Hawaii will provide the connection. The contact has been integrated into the science curriculum on space. Students have learned about the ISS via video, internet and guest speakers and have completed space related projects. The school formed a space club consisting of students from grades 1-8. From these students, candidates were chosen to ask questions of the astronauts aboard the ISS. Istituto Sociale, Torino, Italy has been scheduled for an Amateur Radio on the International Space Station (ARISS) contact on Thursday, April 14 at 08:49 UTC via telebridge station K6DUE in Maryland. This contact will complement the school's astronomy lessons. Students involved with the contact are participating in several activities which include a visit to the Planetarium Pino Torinese, watching movies about orbiting missions and modeling the solar system to scale. 2. Recent ARISS Contacts An Amateur Radio on the International Space Station (ARISS) contact took place between Paolo Nespoli, IZØJPA on the ISS and students from Istituto Tecnico Industriale Statale "Enrico Fermi," Lucca, Italy, on Monday, April 4. The contact was the featured event of a science curriculum covering physics, space and robotics. Approximately 150 students and guests were present and listened as Nespoli answered the 18 questions posed to him. Regional and local media covered the news. On Monday, April 4, on-orbit astronaut Cady Coleman, KC5ZTH participated in an ARISS contact with Rosebud Secondary College students in Victoria, Australia. Telebridge station W6SRJ in California handled the radio connection. Eighteen students had their questions answered during the ISS pass. The contact was integrated into science courses covering space and physics and students participated in hands-on activities such as model building, water powered rockets and student-designed experiments. Students from two Italian schools in Italy, Scuola Primaria III Circolo "Tiro a Segno" in Fermo and Scuola Primaria "Viale della Vittoria" in Montecosaro, jointly participated in an ARISS contact on Wednesday, April 6. Audiences of 200 and 150 respectively, gathered for the contact with ISS astronaut Paolo Nespoli. The activity complemented studies about space, technology, astronauts and the International Space Station. In addition, amateur radio operators from Fermo gave lessons on the importance and use of telegraphy. News coverage was provided by local and regional media outlets. 3. ARISSat-1 to be Activated April 11 for Gagarin Anniversary On April 10, AMSAT (Radio Amateur Satellite Corporation) News Service bulletin (ANS-100) posted information on the ARISSat-1 satellite which will be activated on Monday, April 11 at approximately 14:30 UTC in celebration of the 50th anniversary of Yuri Gagarin's first space flight. The satellite will run in low power mode until Wednesday, April 13 at 10:30 UTC. The contact should be audible over the west coast of the U.S. Interested parties are invited to listen in on the 145.80 MHz downlink. The contact is expected to be conducted in English. John XXIII College operates under the authority of the Catholic Archbishop of Perth. Religious education and Catholic teaching and forms of worship are central in the life of the College. In this context, the College welcomes persons of other denominations who are committed to supporting the Catholic ethos of the College (subject to the availability of places). Boys and girls associate together in classes, in activities and socially. April 8, 2011 To All RADIO AMATEURS BID: $ANS-098.01 SILVER SPRING, MARYLAND (AMSAT News Service) While awaiting deployment from the International Space Station (ISS) in late July, an amateur radio satellite specifically designed to in- terest students in scientific and technological careers will be activated and begin transmissions from the ISS in mid-April of this year. Transmissions are scheduled to begin Monday around 14:30 UTC April 11 and ending Wednesday around 10:30 UTC on April 13. Electronic certificates of the event will be available to those summitting reception reports to: Gagarin(a)arissat1.org. These transmissions will commemorate 50 years since the flight of Russian Cosmonaut Yuri Gagarin as the first human to enter outer space. The satellite (called ARISSat-1, RadioSkaf-V) will send telemetry, SSTV images, and messages of goodwill as it orbits earth inside the ISS. ARISSat-1 is a cooperative effort between AMSAT, ARISS (Amateur Radio on the International Space Station,) RSC-Energia (The Russian Space Agency) and NASA. The design, development and construction of the satellite was done by AMSAT volunteers. Original plans call- ed for the satellite to be housed inside an old Russian spacesuit. But when the suit became unavailable, a spaceframe was developed to house the radio equipment and solar panels. The new satellite was named ARISSat-1. Other names for the spacecraft are RadioSkaf-V and Kedr. The transmitted callsign will be RS01S. In order to operate inside the ISS, ARISSat-1 will be connected to an external amateur radio antenna already mounted on the outer sur- face of the space station. The craft will use its own battery for operation, therefore it will be in low power mode. As a result, listeners can expect 40-60 second "ON" periods followed by two-minute "OFF" periods to save battery power. To listen for ARISSat-1 voice signals during this special event, FM receivers should be tuned to 145.950 MHz. Specific only to this event, planning is currently underway to provide an additional FM broadcast downlink at 437.550 MHz. Even though the satellite will only have an output of 250 mW on 2 meters, a standard FM handy talkie equipped with a quarter-wave whip antenna should be able to receive the voice ID, voice telemetry and greeting messages as the craft passes overhead. SSTV transmissions may also be demodulated and viewed using a free downloadable program such as MMSSTV that is available at: http://mmhamsoft.amateur-radio.ca/pages/mmsstv.php. Those planning to monitor voice broadcasts from ARISSat-1 are request- ed to make note of the telemetry battery voltage values and UTC time, and then submit their records to Gagarin(a)arissat1.org. Digital tele- metry will be sent at 145.920 MHz. Given the low duty cycle of the spacecraft, those planning to receive the digital telemetry are en- couraged to record the entire signal band using the FunCube dongle or SDR-IQ receivers. Software for demodulating the BPSK-1000 telemetry is available at: http://www.arissattlm.org/download/ARISSatTLM_050_Setup.exe A software user guide will be available soon. This special period of operation is only expected to continue during the two-day 50 year commemoration of Gagarin's famous mission. The actual deployment of ARISSat-1, first announced for February 2011, is now expected to take place during an EVA scheduled for late July, 2011. After it is deployed from the International Space Station, ARISSat-1 is expected to be in orbit for a period of up to six months. An International Space Station school contact has been planned with participants at Scuola Primaria III Circolo "Tiro a Segno", Fermo, I-63023, Italy, and Scuola Primaria "Viale della Vittoria", Montecosaro, I-62010, Italy on 6 April. The event is scheduled to begin at approximately 07:10 UTC. The duration of the contact is approximately 9 minutes and 30 seconds. The contact will be direct between IR0ISS and I6KZR. The contact should be audible over Italy and adjacent areas. Interested parties are invited to listen in on the 145.80 MHz downlink. The contact is expected to be conducted in Italian. The Primary School "Tiro a Segno" (Shooting) is located in Fermo, Marche Region, Italy.The project called "New technologies" is mentioned in the annual plane of work that in Italian schools. The project concerns a correct approach with technology and the children are involved in an educational path of research and experiments. Members of the local RADIO AMATEURS club teach our students the importance Ham Radio activities and the use of telegraph. Montecosaro is a little town that is in the province of Macerata, along the valley of Chienti. The school "Viale della Vittoria" provides an opportunity to learn the knowledge offered by the Ministry programs and learn how to rework them so that they become knowledge that make life serene and conscious experience. To increase the educational offer, propose projects such as computer science, the game of chess engines, pottery, art and expression. Participants will ask as many of the following questions as time allows: 1. What's your mission? 2. Will be possible to build a city in the outer space? 3. How do you spend your day on board of ISS? 4. What you feel when you observe the earth from so far away? 5. It's true that the only human works, visible to the naked eye from the space, is the "Great Chinese Wall"? 6. How to live in the space? 7. How do you contact the Earth? 8. How do you fill without gravity? 9. How do you see the planet and stars from ISS? 10. Do you have seen lifeforms or spacecrafts not terrestrial? 11. How did your passion for the space? 12. How many missions you have done? 13. What was the training for this travel like? 14. How can one become an astronaut? 15. How many people are travelling with you at the moment? 16. How do you speak with your colleagues on ISS? 17. How long will your travel on ISS? 18. What are the "nodes" module and what are they used for? 19. How will your landing? 20.
