An International Space Station school contact has been planned with participants at English Estates Elementary, Fern Park, Florida on 13 May. The event is scheduled to begin at approximately 14:48 UTC. The duration of the contact is approximately 9 minutes and 30 seconds. The contact will be direct between NA1SS and N4EH. The contact should be audible over portions of the eastern U.S. Interested parties are invited to listen in on the 145.80 MHz downlink. The contact is expected to be conducted in English. English Estates Elementary, where Leadership is Elementary, is honored to have the opportunity for our students to converse directly with a crew member on board the International Space Station. We also appreciate the support of the Lake Monroe Amateur Radio Society (LMARS) in this endeavor. The Leadership Program at English Estates is based on Dr. Stephen R. Covey's The 6 Habits of Highly Effective People. Weaving these principles into the fabric of our school's culture, we proved guidepost for students, faculty, and staff. This International Space Station Contact is an excellent way for our 5th grade students to practice their leadership skills by developing questions to ask the astronauts while in space. Our Leadership Program has also been featured in the book, The Leader in Me, by Dr. Stephen R. Covey. Participants will ask as many of the following questions as time allows: 1. Do you orbit with the earth or stay in one place? 2. How do you work when you are floating around in space? 3. How do you know how to get back to earth when you are out in space? 4. Do you ever see asteroids or meteors? 5. Do you enjoy being an astronaut? 6. How many days do you stay in space? 7. How long does it take for the rocket you go on to reach the ISS? 8. What would happen if you got stuck in space or ran out of supplies on the ISS? 9. Do you see a lot of space junk in space? 10. Do you ever feel turbulence the way people do on airplanes? 11. What does zero gravity feel like? 12. What planet would you like to stand on if you could? 13. How do you eat in space when your food can float away? 14. What do you do when you are not working? 15. How do you get to be an astronaut? 16. Is it hard to be an astronaut? 17. Do you get enough sleep? 18. Why did you choose to be an astronaut? 19. Can you eat in the rocket before you get to the ISS? 20. If you stay in space for a long time, do you get taller? 21. Do you get claustrophobic in the ISS? 22. Could you go into space without a helmet and just hold your breath? 23. What does it feel like going through the atmosphere? 24. What is the view of space like from the ISS? An International Space Station school contact has been planned with participants at Tecnico Industriale Statale "Gerolamo e Margherita Montani", Fermo,I-63023, Italy on 12 May. The event is scheduled to begin at approximately 09:57 UTC. The duration of the contact is approximately 9 minutes and 30 seconds. The contact will be direct between IR0ISS and I6KZR. The contact should be audible over Italy. Interested parties are invited to listen in on the 145.80 MHz downlink. The contact is expected to be conducted in Italian. Gerolamo e Margherita Montani Higher Technical Institute is located in Fermo, the most important and ancient town in the district north of the province. Fermo has become recently a new Province of Marche Region. The Montani Institute is one of the most ancient Italian technical schools. These are the courses that the school offers: Chemistry, Materials and Biotechnologies, Electronics and Electrotechnical, Computer Science and Telecommunications, Mechanics, Mechatronics and Energy. Participants will ask as many of the following questions (translated) as time allows: 1. What insulating material of the part exposed to the sun of the ISS must be used to withstand the high temperature? 2. What is the maximum and minimum temperature outside the orbiting station? 3. What is our earth like seen from ISS? Can we distinguish mountain ranges from plain areas, oceans or the heavily pollute areas? 7. Can you see the Chinese Wall from the ISS? 8. What are the physical characteristic that a person had to have to became an astronaut? 9. What are your work assignments inside the ISS? 10. Can accidents occur in outer space? If so how to behave properly? 11. What measurement system has been agreed on amongst the nations in the designing and construction of the ISS module? 12. What is your typical day like? 13. What is your nourishment inside the space station? 14. How do you obtain the necessary liquids when you are thirsty And for personal hygiene? 15. What measures have been taken to help track space debris? 16. Do you have space adaptation syndrome due to the lack of gravity for such a long period of time? 17. What are the performance criteria for space-to earth data transmission? 18. For the earth-space communications, which radio devices are used? 19. How much power have those device? 20. At which speed the ISS moves? 21. Given the constant motion of the ISS, what type of antenna is required to send signals from the ISS to earth? 22. What are the construction materials for antennas? 23. What is the average daily cost of the space mission? 24. Have the space station its own motors? If it have, how they are powered? Dear Mentor Team On the 7th May I observed the Second contact with the Italien School. I was listening with a 4 Element Yagi and the handheld TRX Kenwood TH7D. I made the same Observation of Week Signals (S2) with other contacts which I listen with the same equipement. Normaly the Signals in the past are about S7 up to S9. ARISS signal reports wanted

Hi all, The contact today with Greenville was the first time we have used the Ericsson radio from the Columbus module on the ISS. We have received some reports that the signal may been lower than from past contacts. Please pass along your thoughts on how the signals seemed to be. An International Space Station school contact has been planned with participants at Mount Carmel Academy, Houston, TX on 10 May. The event is scheduled to begin at approximately 15:29 UTC. The duration of the contact is approximately 9 minutes and 30 seconds. The contact will be a telebridge between NA1SS and ON4ISS. The contact should be audible over portions of Europe. Interested parties are invited to listen in on the 145.80 MHz downlink. The contact is expected to be conducted in English. Mt. Carmel Academy is a contract-charter school in southeast Houston within the Houston Independent School District. Incorporated in May 2008 after the Archdiocese of Galveston-Houston announced the closing of Mt. Carmel High School, Mt. Carmel Academy is a "School of Choice" enjoying local autonomy, including curriculum flexibility, hiring of its own faculty and staff, setting its own standards of conduct and student activities, and setting admissions requirements for attending the school. MCA is accountable to the Houston Independent School District's standards in the area of academic performance, standards, and accreditation. The school is governed by a Board of Trustees comprised of MCA parents, area business/community leaders, and MCHS alumni and has a current enrollment of 300 students. Amateur Radio on the International Space Station (ARISS) Status Report May 9, 2011 1. Upcoming School Contacts St. Michael School, Schererville, Indiana has been scheduled for an Amateur Radio on the International Space Station (ARISS) contact on Monday, May 9 at 18:00 UTC. The school partners with the Challenger Learning Center in Hammond, Indiana. Students are provided with a variety of learning experiences. In addition to this ARISS contact, students are also involved with Science Lab, Creative Communications, Rube Goldberg, School Television Broadcast and Weather Bug. Mount Carmel Academy, Houston, Texas has been scheduled for an Amateur Radio on the International Space Station (ARISS) contact on Tuesday, May 10 at 15:29 UTC via telebridge station ON4ISS in Belgium. Mount Carmel students have been learning about the International Space Station, the ARISS program, and amateur radio. The mechanics of performing a contact with an orbiting body have been discussed and the Clear Lake Amateur Radio Club has provided follow-on educational support. 2. Recent ARISS Contacts Paolo Nespoli, IZØJPA participated in an ARISS contact with students attending Greenville Elementary School in Greenville, Illinois on Friday, May 6 using the Ericsson radio which was recently installed in the Columbus module. Fifteen questions were asked and answered before the ISS went over the horizon. Greenville, a NASA Explorer School, has developed a curriculum which promotes interest in science, technology, engineering, mathematics, (STEM) and geography. Local radio operators provide in-services and demonstrations, as well as training and support for staff and students with an interest in radio. Istituto Tecnico Industriale Statale "Enrico Mattei" students in Maglie, Italy spoke with on-orbit astronaut Paolo Nespoli, IZØJPA on Saturday, May 7 via an ARISS contact. Approximately 200 students and visitors turned out for the event and listened as the astronaut fielded the 18 questions posed to him. The contact had been integrated into a curriculum that focused on radio-telecommunications and space research. Another project that the school recently participated in with its partner ASI- Italian Space Agency was the project "COSMIC RAYS." On Saturday, May 7, the Turin Flying Institute in Caselle Torinese, Italy experienced an ARISS contact with Paolo Nespoli, IZØJPA on the ISS. Twenty space-related questions prepared by the youth were answered over 2 consecutive ISS passes. Nearly 150 students and guests were in attendance and the event video was streamed over the internet. The contact was incorporated into the science curriculum which included courses on Electronics, Radios and Astronomical Navigation. An ARISS contact was held on Saturday, May 7 at the Smithsonian Institution, National Air and Space Museum in Washington, D.C. as part of the Space Day 2011 celebration. The radio link was provided by station K6DUE in Greenbelt, Maryland. A number of AMSAT (Radio Amateur Satellite Corporation) volunteers engaged visitors in satellites and space and a presentation was given about amateur radio. A screen displayed a PowerPoint presentation about the ISS and ham radio and audio/visual equipment allowed visitors to hear the questions and answers. The average crowd in the Museum on this Saturday in May is about 30,000. 3. AMSAT - Upcoming Activities at Dayton Hamvention The May 8 AMSAT (Radio Amateur Satellite Corporation) News Service bulletin (ANS-128) has an item about activities planned for the Dayton Hamvention, to be held on May 20 - 22, which will include a visit from astronaut Doug Wheelock, KF5BOC, a display of the ARISSat-1 prototype and a talk on ARISSat-1 given by Project Manager Gould Smith, WA4SXM. Astronaut Training Status Dan Burbank, KC5ZSX took part in a preflight session on Wednesday, May 4. He is slated to fly with Expedition 29 in September 2011. Tom Marshburn (Expedition 34) is scheduled for an ARISS basic ops session on Monday, May 9.
