An International Space Station school contact has been planned with participants at United Space School, Seabrook, Texas on 30 July. The event is scheduled to begin at approximately 17:01 UTC. The duration of the contact is approximately 9 minutes and 30 seconds. The contact will be a telebridge between NA1SS and W6SRJ. The contact should be audible over the west coast of the U.S. Interested parties are invited to listen in on the 145.80 MHz downlink. The contact is expected to be conducted in English. United Space School is a two-week program arranged by the Foundation for International Space Education. This summer 31 students between the ages of 16 and 18, from 15 countries, are working in teams to design a human mission to Mars. The teams are: Yellow (Mission Control on the Moon); Red (Getting to Mars and back); Green (Living on Mars); Blue (Working on Mars). All students are hosted by Clear Lake area families. The students will tour the Johnson Space Center and attend lectures by astronauts, scientists and engineers. Participants will ask as many of the following questions as time allows: 1. What challenges have you faced while you trained for your flight? 2. Are there options for new countries to join current international efforts? 3. What is the hardest part of applying to be an astronaut? 4. What has been your favorite experiment? 5. How do you deal with waste in space? 6. Have you experienced motion sickness? 7. Have you ever done an EVA? If so, what was it like? 8. How do you cut your hair or shave your beard in space? 9. What is it like to sleep in space? 10. What have been your worst and best days in space? 11. What surprised you most about spaceflight? 12. How did you feel waiting to lift off? 13. How do you deal with being away from your family so long? 14. What was your favorite meal in space? 15. What do you wish you could have brought into space with you? 16. How do countries maintain their independent contributions to spaceflight via the International Space Station? 17. What do you anticipate large changes to NASA's programs, and what might the new opportunities be in NASA's future? Amateur Radio on the International Space Station (ARISS) Status Report July 25, 2011 1. Upcoming School Contact An Amateur Radio on the International Space Station (ARISS) contact has been scheduled for United Space School, Seabrook, Texas on Saturday, July 30 at 17:01 UTC via station W6SRJ in California. The United Space School is a once a year session of high school students that meets annually in the NASA/Clear Lake Area. These students come from around the world for a two week session, during which they stay with local host families while being mentored by astronauts, engineers, and scientists to design a mission to Mars as their team project. Class sessions are held at the University of Houston at Clear Lake. Students will be given lessons on amateur radio and through the ARISS contact opportunity they will learn firsthand what the experience of spaceflight is like. They will use this knowledge in putting together their team project presentation, which they will present to the Houston space community at the end of their session. 2. Successful ARISS Contacts Youth attending the University of Alberta - ISSET Space Academy (Institute for Space Science, Exploration and Technology) in Edmonton, Alberta, Canada took part in an Amateur Radio on the International Space Station (ARISS) contact on Wednesday, July 20. Over 130 people attended the event and listened as the campers put 18 questions to on-orbit Astronaut Mike Fossum, KF5AQG. The Academy, designed for children in grades 7 - 9 who are interested in space exploration, provides them the opportunity to participate in hands-on activities such as launching model rockets, building interactive robots and on this day, speaking with an astronaut in space. Representatives from 5 television stations, 1 radio station and 2 newspapers covered the event. Astronaut Paolo Nespoli, IZ0JPA was on hand to introduce the ARISS event and greeted his fellow astronaut Mike Fossum on the ISS. Fossum then fielded 20 questions posed to him by the youth as an audience of approximately 200 looked on. The camp offers a program of sports, nature and science activities during its two week session. 3. ARISS International Team Teleconference Held The ARISS International Team monthly teleconference was held on Tuesday, July 19. ARISSat-1 in SATPC32

Hi, The deployment of ARRISat-1 is approaching. Here is a collection of data on the various modes for use in configuring SATPC32. Note that you will need to tweak the sideband frequencies slightly to account for rig calibration and other issues, as usual, but these should be close. You can paste these in the DOPPLER.SQF file, but before you do, please read on! ARISSat-1,145918.5,0,USB,,,0,0,BPSK/CW-2 ARISSat-1,145950.0,0,FM,,,0,0,VOICE/SSTV ARISSat-1,145930.0,435750.0,USB,LSB,REV,0,0,XPDR ARISSat-1,145938.5,0,USB,,,0,0,CW-1 Since ARISSat-1 will be deployed by a gentle push from the ISS by Cosmonauts, the ISS Keps will be good until separate Keps are released by Space Track. One way to handle the transition is to change the Doppler information slightly: ISS,145918.5,0,USB,,,0,0,BPSK/CW-2 ISS,145950.0,0,FM,,,0,0,VOICE/SSTV ISS,145930.0,435750.0,USB,LSB,REV,0,0,XPDR ISS,145938.5,0,USB,,,0,0,CW-1 Paste the ARISSat-1 data as desired, and also paste the ISS version of the data into the DOPPLER.SQF file after the regular ISS data. For the final test aboard the ISS, and initially after deployment, select ISS tracking, and then select the desired ARRISat-1 frequency data at the end of the list in the CAT window. After the ISS and ARISSat-1 are far enough apart that independent Keps are available, you can begin using ARISSat-1 as a separate object by adding it to the objects you track in the Satellites menu window. The satellite may be identified as ARISSat-1, but may well have some other designation which will be reported. If it is not ARRISat-1, then change the name in the first group above to that used in the Keps. They must agree exactly for SATPC32 to match the Doppler data with the satellite. (You can also use the AmsatNames.txt file, which is covered in the SATPC32 documentation.) You can then delete the extra ISS data if you wish. An International Space Station school contact has been planned with participants at European Space Agency for ESA Space Camp 2011, San Rossore Pisa, Tuscany, Italy on 23 July. The event is scheduled to begin at approximately 09:42 UTC. The duration of the contact is approximately 9 minutes and 30 seconds. The contact will be direct between OR4ISS and IQ5VR. The contact should be audible over portions of Italy. Interested parties are invited to listen in on the 145.80 MHz downlink. The contact is expected to be conducted in Italian. 150 children and teenagers from all over Europe will participate to the European Space Agency (ESA) Camp which this year will take place in San Rossore, Pisa, Italy. The participants are children of ESA employees, aged 8-17 years old, who will enjoy a rich program of sport, nature and science activities during the two weeks of the camp (16-30 July). The ESA Space Camp is an exceptional forum for reinforcing the ESA corporate spirit among the children who take part and for learning about space and ESA activities, and a good opportunity to do sports and socialize. Participants will ask as many of the following questions as time allows: 1. Do you think aliens exist? 2. Do you like camping? 3. Did you have many friends when you were a child? 4. Are you good at sport? 5. Is it true that from space the Earth looks fragile? 6. Are you homesick? 7. What is your favorite sport? 8. The contact should be audible over portions of Canada and the U.S. Interested parties are invited to listen in on the 145.80 MHz downlink. The contact is expected to be conducted in English. The ISSET Space Academy is a summer outreach program organized and run by The Institute for Space Science, Exploration and Technology at the University of Alberta with the support of the Royal Astronomical Society of Canada (RASC), Edmonton Chapter. ISSET's Space Academy is designed for kids in grades 7-9 interested in space exploration as a hands-on five day camp. Trainees build and launch model rockets, and experience real challenges faced by astronauts in space, like performing complex tasks at the direction of mission control on Earth, their only connection a walkie-talkie. Space camp trainees handle real meteorites, rocks from deep space that reveal secrets of how Earth and the Universe were formed. Trainees also get access to the AMMI Lab, the U of A's virtual reality environment. With the help of virtual reality glasses campers will 'enter' a 3-D magnetic storm in outer space. The camp also includes building interactive robots and an afternoon at the Telus World of Science. The candidates will also use amateur radio when they will launch and track high altitude balloons using the APRS system. Participants will ask as many of the following questions as time allows: 1. Do the G:force simulators back on earth truly prepare an astronaut for the lift off? 2. How do you personally deal with stressful situations in space? 3. How does astronaut's pen work in zero gravity? 4. What is your daily lifestyle in space like? 5. How does living on the International Space Station influence the way you act or think about Earth and humanity? 6. What is a black hole? 7. How do you simulate gravity on the Space Station? 8. How do you feel living in zero gravity for a long time make you feel, not eating or sleeping as normal? 9. When did you decide you wanted to be an astronaut? 10. What kind of schooling did you need to do your job? 11. How does it make you feel to see Earth from space? 12. How are you returning to Earth from the Space Station? 13. Does NASA have more plans to send additional astronauts to the Space Station? 14. I am worried about a future in the space industry. Do think there will be good careers as an astronaut in the future? 15. What is your opinion of the private space industry and what role will it play? 16. Does NASA have plans to send astronauts to Mars? 17. Does everyone get along all the time on the Space Station? 18. Is it really that complicated to turn a screw in zero gravity? 19. Amateur Radio on the International Space Station (ARISS) Status Report July 18, 2011 1. Upcoming School Contacts University of Alberta - ISSET Space Academy (Institute for Space Science, Exploration and Technology), Edmonton, Alberta, Canada has been scheduled for an Amateur Radio on the International Space Station (ARISS) contact on Wednesday, July 20 at 15:27 UTC. ISSET's Space Academy is designed for kids in grades 7-9 interested in space exploration as a hands-on five day camp. Trainees will build and launch model rockets and experience real challenges faced by astronauts in space, such as performing complex tasks at the direction of mission control on Earth, their only connection a walkie-talkie. The youth will handle real meteorites and will have access to the AMMI Lab, the University of Alberta's virtual reality environment. With the help of virtual reality glasses, campers will 'enter' a 3-D magnetic storm in outer space. The camp also includes building interactive robots and an afternoon at the Telus World of Science. An Amateur Radio on the International Space Station (ARISS) contact has been scheduled for European Space Agency (ESA) Space Camp 2011, San Rossore, Pisa, Italy on Saturday, July 23 at 09:42 UTC. Approximately 150 children from all over Europe will attend this camp to participate in a program of sports, nature and science and space activities. 2. Ottawa Contact Successful On Thursday, July 14, the City of Ottawa Sports Recreation Camp in Ontario, Canada took part in an Amateur Radio on the International Space Station (ARISS) contact. Telebridge station W6SRJ in California provided the connection. One hundred twenty-five students, twelve counselors and many parents were present for the event and watched as the youth asked 16 questions of ISS crew member Ron Garan, KF5GPO. Global National (Canadian network) aired the story nationally and Your Ottawa Region posted an article on its site. http://www.yourottawaregion.com/news/local/article/1043569--ground-control-… 3. ARISS-U.S. Receives Proposals for Contacts The NASA Teaching From Space Office received over 100 inquiries about the U.S. proposal process for ARISS contacts that will be scheduled during the January - July 2012 time frame. Twenty-five schools met the July 15 deadline and submitted proposals. The selection process will begin shortly. Another window of opportunity for U.S. schools and organizations to submit proposals will open later in the year. 4. ARRL QST Posts ARISS News The American Radio Relay League (ARRL) included an ARISS item in its August QST about ARRL at Hamvention, and highlighted Astronaut Doug Wheelock's participation, particularly with the youth activities. 5. AMSAT Provides ARISSat-1 Status The AMSAT (Radio Amateur Satellite Corporation) News Service July 17 bulletin (ANS-198) included a status on ARISSat-1. The battery will be charged July 27 or 28 and a test will be conducted on the ISS over the weekend of July 30-31. Deployment is scheduled for August 3. An International Space Station school contact has been planned with participants at City of Ottawa Sports Recreation Camp, Ottawa, Ontario, Canada on 14 July. The event is scheduled to begin at approximately 16:21 UTC. The duration of the contact is approximately 9 minutes and 30 seconds. The contact will be a telebridge between NA1SS and W6SRJ. The contact should be audible over the west coast of the U.S. Interested parties are invited to listen in on the 145.80 MHz downlink. The contact is expected to be conducted in English. The City of Ottawa owns and operates dozens of recreation facilities throughout the city including everything from large multi-purpose facilities, to seniors centres, smaller recreation centres, and community buildings. The Walter Baker Centre represents one of the larger facilities incorporating Swimming training at all levels, hockey arenas, Weight and Cardio Rooms, Aerobic Studios and various other fitness related activity centres for all ages operating all year. The summer camp groups have access to all these facilities including the High School library that forms part of the facility and is attached directly to the School. This year, summer campers are undertaking some new and interesting activities one of which includes a brief talk with the International Space Station - we anticipate substantial interest and participation in this event. Amateur Radio on the International Space Station (ARISS) Status Report July 11, 2011 1. Upcoming School Contact City of Ottawa Sports Recreation Camp, Ottawa, Ontario, Canada has been scheduled for an Amateur Radio on the International Space Station (ARISS) contact on Thursday, July 14 at 16:21 UTC via telebridge station W6SRJ in California. The City of Ottawa owns and operates dozens of recreation facilities throughout the city. The Walter Baker Centre is one of the larger facilities incorporating swimming training at all levels, hockey arenas, weight and cardio rooms, aerobic studios and various other fitness related activity centres for all ages, operating all year. The summer camp groups have access to all these facilities including the high school library that forms part of the facility and is attached directly to the school. This year, summer campers are undertaking some new and interesting activities, one of which includes a brief talk with the International Space Station. Substantial interest in this event is anticipated. 2. Japanese Contact Successful On Friday, July 8, students from the Matsumoto School for the Visually Impaired, Matsumoto, Nagano, Japan participated in an Amateur Radio on the International Space Station (ARISS) contact with on-orbit astronaut Satoshi Furukawa KE5DAW. An audience of approximately 40 people listened as eight students got in one question each before the ISS went over the horizon. Media coverage included 5 newspapers. The school, founded in 1912, currently has an enrollment of 29 students of all ages, that all have one or more disabilities. By participating in this NASA educational program, students have become more interested in space and international communication. 3. About Shuttle Retransmissions

Hello: As this is the final Shuttle mission I would like to know if anyone has confirmation about any audio retransmission over Amateur Radio Band that may take place, much better if it is in HF due to the path lenght from USA to Cuba as I belive it won't be viable at VHF. I visited Goddard Radio Club (WA3NAN) web page looking for information, but I was only able to get the possible frequencies, not confirmation about the current mission activation or not. Please if any one has confirmed information about frecuencies, times and dates it will be very appreciated. Don't jump to any conclusions. Wait for the AMSAT engineering people to give you the current and CORRECT information. If any info comes from anyone else, it is not a direct contact with the Space Station people. Matsumoto School for the Visually Impaired was founded in 1912, has 29 students from infancy to 65 years old. Our class is divided into the kindergarten division, the elementary school division, the junior high school division, and the advanced level division of oriental therapy (acupuncture, moxibustion and anma-massage-shiatsu treatment). An International Space Station school contact has been planned with participants at Youth Hostel "La Foresta", near Castel Rigone, Trasimeno Lake, Perugia, Italy on 1 July. The contact should be audible over Italy. Interested parties are invited to listen in on the 145.80 MHz downlink. The contact is expected to be conducted in English. Since 2009, at the Youth Hostel « La Foresta », near Trasimeno Lake and Perugia, Panda Adventure organizes one of its most interesting educational programme : « Astronauts in Forest » for about 200 children from 11 to 14 years. The programme combines the study of Earth with the study of Space and Space exploration and a big role game. Children are invited to imagine themselves as « Aliens » landed on our Planet from the space, and to participate every day to a different "Mission" to know the environmental problems of the Earth and try to find solutions to them. The Hostel has been equipped with two big hemispheres (two "space ships") placed in the forest and equipped with laboratories, GPS instruments, telescope, big screen to project films, computers, sky maps, library with educational materials. It has been the first program of this kind in Italy and strengthened the cooperation with ESA / ESRIN that gave a very important contribution providing the camp with educational materials. All the activities consisted in field researches, experiments, use of technical instruments, and games to explore the Earth and the Sky, to research solutions to save our Planet. Every day a log - book was kept by children. Every Mission had a filmed report by children. Every evening a film or a documentary on Earth or Space was shown. The programme "Astronauts in Forest" and the activities' reports of the summer camps always arises a lot of interest. They have a large circulation through Panda Avventure web site and social network. Generally Panda Adventure organizes also media coverage through News letter and contacts with newspaper and magazines. Participants will ask as many of the following questions as time allows: 1.
