Amateur Radio on the International Space Station (ARISS) Status Report January 16, 2012 1. Upcoming School Contact Vrije Technische Scholen (VTS), located in Sint-Niklaas, Belgium has been scheduled for an Amateur Radio on the International Space Station (ARISS) contact on Wednesday, January 18 at 09:47 UTC. VTS is a technical and professional secondary school for students ages 12 - 18. Lesson plans associated with this contact have been adapted for the different age and skill levels of the students and cover electricity, mechanics, antennas and space. 2. Burbank Participates in ARISS Contact with Descartes High School Descartes High School in Montigny-Le-Bretonneux, France participated in an Amateur Radio on the International Space Station (ARISS) contact with Dan Burbank, KC5ZSX on Monday, January 9. Burbank talked about how astronauts from different cultures get along on the ISS and fielded questions about the various experiments performed onboard the Space Station. About three hundred students and visitors were present for the event, including Astronaut Leopold Eyharts who exchanged greetings with Burbank. Presentations were given before the contact and a Question and Answer session followed. The ARISS contact was a featured activity for students who have been studying life and work on the ISS and through collaboration with the town's amateur radio club, have also been learning about radio and wireless technology. Belgian Students Radio Andre Kuipers On Friday, January 13, an Amateur Radio on the International Space Station (ARISS) contact was held between students from Atheneum Borgloon in Belgium and Astronaut Andre Kuipers, PI9ISS on the ISS. The radio connection was provided by telebridge station K6DUE in Greenbelt, Maryland. The ARISS event highlighted a science curriculum covering the history of space travel, the solar system and the ISS. Other activities included space workshops and a field trip to the Eurospace Center in Transinne. Approximately 100 people tied into the contact through streaming video on the internet. 4. ARISS Contact Article in Canadian Magazine The January/February 2012 issue of the Canadian Amateur Magazine (TCA) has a great article on an ARISS contact held in Thetford Mines, Québec on November 14, 2011. The contact was arranged by a fourteen year old at the school. The story, written by ARISS Delegate Maurice-André Vigneault, VE3VIG, is titled, "Quebec Youth Masters ISS Contact." KPARC ARISS Presentation ARISS volunteer Dave Jordan, AA4KN gave a talk on the ARISS program during the Sun City, Florida Kings Point Amateur Radio Club (KPARC) monthly meeting on January 9. His presentation covered basic operations of the ARISS organization, a brief history of ARISS beginning with SAREX and a section discussing the ARISSat-1 mission during which he showed released photos and others that illustrated the assembly, testing and general development efforts that took place in the Orlando lab. In concluding his talk, Jordan suggested that the club members form a group to meet with local schools and encourage them to submit proposals for future ARISS contacts. Astronaut Training Status Astronaut Alexander Gerst is interested in earning his amateur radio license and will be participating in training sessions in February. He is scheduled to fly with Expedition 40 in May 2014.

An International Space Station school contact has been planned with participants at Vrije Technische Scholen (VTS), Sint-Niklaas, Belgium on 18 Jan. The event is scheduled to begin at approximately 09:47 UTC. The duration of the contact is approximately 9 minutes and 30 seconds. The contact will be direct between OR4ISS and ON4SNW. The contact should be audible over Belgium and portions of Europe. Interested parties are invited to listen in on the 145.80 MHz downlink. The contact is expected to be conducted in Dutch. The non-profit association 'Vrije Technische Scholen BSO/TSO' is an industrial technical school that has become a real value in the over 100 years of its existence in Sint-Niklaas and in the vast area of our region as a training center for young technicians in the field of mechanics, electricity, carpentry, construction, refrigeration engineering, automotive engineering, industrial sciences. The industrial technical education is a product of its time, which in the case of our school, due to its numerous contacts with the industrial sector and the institutions for higher education, amounts to a strong emphasis on "science and technology". Our school population consists of about 800 pupils, both male and female, between 12 and 18-20 years old. Our training can be subdivided in three categories : -The theoretical technical schooling : prepares for a training in higher education and can in the respect of theoretical approach be compared with the general secondary schooling. -The practical technical schooling: prepares for a career in industry on the level of 'supervisor of the manufacturing process'. -The professional schooling : they prepare for a professional life as a qualified worker in the fields of carpentry, welding, construction and so on. Those three training areas all include 6 years. At the end of the technical training the pupils receive a degree of secondary schooling. The pupils in the professional training have to add an additional 7th year for this degree. The ARISS -project is not the first adventure the VTS engages in. Pupils and teachers regularly 'spice' the traditional school-events with additional assignments. This results in a more challenging schooling process for all parties involved. To name just a few achievements of the previous years : -Our automotive division was awarded the 'golden key', the first prize in the contest. -Our pupils participate in the maths-olympics. -Robocontest. -Electrochallenge. Also in the social field, in which the well-being of our pupils deserves our attention, our school has distinguished itself : in 2009 we won the first prize in the Queen Paola Contest 'School Of Hope', with our project 'from underprivileged to privileged'. In short, VTS BSO/TSO is a school in which nobody is afraid of a challenge, which can be inferred from our participation in this fascinating ARISS-project. Is it possible, in case of emergency, to operate on an astronaut in the ISS? 13. How is the weight core of the ISS determined? 14. How does a rocket catch up with the ISS? 15. How is your weight measured in the ISS? 16. Have you got a feeling of speed inside the ISS? 17. What happens with the packaging garbage in the ISS? 18. An International Space Station school contact has been planned with participants at Atheneum Borgloon, Borgloon, Belgium on 13 Jan. The event is scheduled to begin at approximately 12:35 UTC. The duration of the contact is approximately 9 minutes and 30 seconds. The contact will be a telebridge between NA1SS and K6DUE. The contact should be audible over portions of the eastern U.S. and Canada. Interested parties are invited to listen in on the 145.80 MHz downlink. The contact is expected to be conducted in Dutch. "Koninklijk Atheneum Borgloon" is a secondary school in Borgloon, a city in Belgium. Student population of 165 is spread across one campus. Our school offers general and technical courses. One pupil, Dafné Switten, brought us into contact with the radiostation UBA-RST. Her father suggested we cooperate and have the wonderful opportunity to contact Mr. Kuipers, who leaves for a six-month trip to outer space in October 2011, at the ISS. The Head of our school agreed readily. One of the other members of the RST, astronaut Frank Dewinne, lived in our region. Mr. Dewinne is invited for an interview at our school so our pupils can learn even more before the actual radio contact is established. We hope he will accept our invitation. The school policy has always been to stimulate scientific interest through school subjects and extracurricular activities (school trips such as visits to the Planetarium in Genk and Eurospace Center in Transinne). Some of our students decide to take a higher education in sciences and establish a professional career in academics or scientific research. In the 6th form the geography classes cover the subject of cosmography. This course deals with the way we receive information from outer space. The school believes that participating in this radio contact is one of the outstanding means to make pupils, teachers and parents more aware of what lies beyond our planet's borders. This event offers us the chance to get more pupils than ever before interested in that process of scientific advancement. In this respect, the radio contact with Andre Kuipers during his space adventure is a unique opportunity for our pupils. Participants will ask as many of the following questions (translated) as time allows: 1. What training did you receive to prepare this space mission? 2. How long does a journey from earth to the ISS take? 3. What is the speed of the ISS? 4. What is the temperature inside and outside the ISS? 5. What language is spoken in the ISS? 6. What are the daily tasks in the ISS and do you have any free time? 10. What happens if anyone becomes ill? Is there any medication on board? 11. How many meals a day do you have and do you like the food? 12. Why do you sleep upright and don't you lie down? 13. Do you wear clean clothes every day and how do you wash yourself? 14. How do you get oxygen/air in the ISS? 15. Does a space suit fit properly? 16. Can you practice any sports in space? If so, what sport do you prefer? 17. How do you communicate with your family? 18. What did you bring along in your suitcase? 19. What happens during a spacewalk? Are you going to make one? 20. What are you planning to do after this space mission? For US schools to have an ARISS contact, they must fill out a proposal, submit it to NASA, and see if they are approved or not. Once a school is approved and put on the list, an ARISS mentor will be assigned to assist the school. NASA will have two open windows a year for schools to submit a proposal. The first window for contacts during the first half of 2012 has already closed. Look for the second window for second half 2012 contacts later this year. Amateur Radio on the International Space Station (ARISS) Status Report January 9, 2012 1. Upcoming School Contact An Amateur Radio on the International Space Station (ARISS) contact has been scheduled for Atheneum Borgloon in Borgloon, Belgium on Friday, January 13 at 12:35 UTC via telebridge station K6DUE in Greenbelt, Maryland. The contact will be integrated into science lessons covering the history of space travel, the solar system and the ISS, including the Columbus module. ESA ISS Education kits will be utilized. Students will take a trip to the Eurospace Center in Transinne and will participate in space workshops and other hands-on activities. The radio talk is planned with on-orbit Astronaut Andre Kuipers and Astronaut Frank DeWinne has also been invited to speak with the children. 2. Poland Contact Successful A successful Amateur Radio on the International Space Station (ARISS) contact was held on Monday, January 2 between Zespól Szkól nr 2 in Zuromin, Poland and Dan Burbank, KC5ZSX on the ISS. Students asked questions to learn what an ordinary day on the ISS is like. Over 300 students and guests gathered for the event including several distinguished visitors: Head of Zuromin District, Mayor of Zuromin City, Head of Education Department Municipal Office of the City of Zuromin, Headmaster of junior grammar school in Biezun, Headmaster of Polish secondary school in Zuromin, Headmaster of ZS nr 2 in Zuromin and Headmaster of SSP in Kliczewo. Another 140 people watched streaming video of the event on the internet. The contact highlighted the curriculum at the school covering modeling, telecommunications and robotics. 3. ARISSat-1 Re-enters Earth's Atmosphere The ARISSat-1 satellite re-entered Earth's atmosphere sometime early on January 4. The last telemetry reported was from stations in Japan at 06:02:14 UTC with telemetry indicating high temperatures. AMSAT reported the news in a special report on January 4 and in the January 8 AMSAT News Service weekly bulletin (ANS-008). An International Space Station school contact has been planned with participants at Descartes, Montigny-Le-Bretonneux, France on 09 Jan. The event is scheduled to begin at approximately 10:14 UTC. The duration of the contact is approximately 9 minutes and 30 seconds. The contact will be direct between OR4ISS and F6KRK/p. The contact should be audible over France and adjacent areas. Interested parties are invited to listen in on the 145.80 MHz downlink. The contact is expected to be conducted in French. Descartes High School is located 30 km South-West from the center of Paris and 10 km from Versailles Palace. There are about 800 students, aged 15 to 18 who study non-vocational subjects for the end-of-the-year test called Baccalaureat. A 2-year preparatory class for entering top engineering schools in France opened 2 years ago. The Astronomy Club has a telescope with which the students observe planets. They have already succeeded taking pictures of the ISS. This year, students study life and work aboard the International Space Station and discover radio amateur activities with the support of the local radio-club F6KRK. The school's English Club is also participating and helping to improve the students' speaking skills for a Space conversation. The students dream to be able to communicate with the ISS so that one day, spotting a small shiny object in the sky, they can say: "I have talked with an astronaut up there!" Participants will ask as many of the following questions as time allows: 1. How did you feel during your first day in space? 2. Was becoming an astronaut a child's dream, did someone inspire you, like a role model? 3. How do you cope with cultural differences between astronauts? 4. Have you ever done funny experiments in space, could you give us some examples? 5. We have taken pictures of the ISS with a telescope, have you also got this kind of equipment and do you have time to observe the stars? 6. Have you already experienced extravehicular activity? 7. Does your water recovery system filter all the waste water and is it really efficient? 8. Have you already got the first results of the Alpha Magnetic Spectrometer experiment? 9. What has been the most exciting experiment for you so far? 10. Are you happy with the food? 11. How difficult is it to cohabit in such a small space with so few people? 12. Do you have the notion of time in space? 13. When you are in space, do you follow the news? 14. How do you clean the station, have you got a specific system like a vacuum cleaner? 15. Are there sometimes problems such as oxygen leaks or fire in the ISS? 16. What do you miss most? 17. What outfits are you allowed to wear? 18. How were you chosen to go to the ISS? 19. Do you have free time during the day? 20. What is the main discovery you have made from growing plants in microgravity? All, Our busy satellite reentered sometime early on 4 January, 2012. The last telemetry was received at 06:02:14 UTC with the temperatures showing very high: http://www.arissattlm.org/live It was not expected that Space Command would do a TIP, but they did, so we have relatively good information on where it ended. Note the impact window is still 6 hours, but that the telemetry report narrows that to about 4. Report Date/Time 2012-01-04 04:28:00 GMT Predicted Decay Time 2012-01-04 07:00:00 GMT +/- 3 Hours Predicted Decay Location 12.7° S, 354.3° E Direction ascending Inclination 51.6° Revolution Number 2411 High Interest Object N Final Report The predicted impact point is an open part of the South Atlantic, well west of Angola. If you heard the satellite, even briefly, after 0600 UTC, or you did not hear it after that date and you have been regularly hearing it, please let me know. This will help confirm the actual impact point. For those who have been involved with telemetry collection, and the Chicken Little Contest, please give us a couple of days to get things together before we make formal announcements.
