Amateur Radio on the International Space Station (ARISS) Status Report October 29, 2012 1. Upcoming School Contacts South Florida Science Museum (SFSM), West Palm Beach, Florida is slated for an Amateur Radio on the International Space Station (ARISS) contact on Tuesday, October 30 at 15:58 UTC. SFSM and the West Palm Beach Amateur Radio Club, WPBARC, which maintains a radio station within the museum, are working with area teachers to provide educational content to students emphasizing NASA, the ISS and amateur radio. The primary target audience is underserved, at-risk youth, ages 11-15. An Amateur Radio on the International Space Station (ARISS) contact has been scheduled for Southern Tier Catholic and Archbishop Walsh Academy, Olean, New York on Tuesday, October 30 at 16:16 UTC using telebridge station IK1SLD in Italy. The contact is part of a comprehensive education curriculum which will pique students' interest in Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics (STEM). Cumberland Elementary School, West Lafayette, Indiana has been slated for an Amateur Radio on the International Space Station (ARISS) on Tuesday, October 30 at 17:35 UTC. The contact will be integrated into a curriculum covering topics on space research, robotics and engineering. Other activities planned include night sky observations, model rocketry and electrical circuit projects. An Amateur Radio on the International Space Station (ARISS) contact will be held with Primarschule Aesch in Forch, Switzerland on Friday, November 2 at 13:47 UTC. The contact will complement a science education plan covering astronomy and spaceflight. 2. Successful ARISS Contacts Held Meikei High School in Tsukuba, Japan participated in an Amateur Radio on the International Space Station (ARISS) contact on Tuesday, October 23. Students from the science club, who are studying orbital mechanics and amateur radio satellite communications, used their own radio station, JJ1YAF to make the call to on-orbit astronaut Akihiko Hoshide, KE5DNI, an alumnus of the school. The contact was conducted in Japanese. Approximately 60 people were in attendance and media coverage included 4 newspapers as well as the Japan Broadcasting Corporation, NHK. On Friday, October 26, students from East Falmouth Elementary School in East Falmouth, Massachusetts took part in a successful Amateur Radio on the International Space Station (ARISS) contact with Sunita Williams, KD5PLB. Students asked 18 questions concerning what it is like to live in space and the experiments conducted on the Space Station. The contact was integrated into science lessons about the solar system, global climate changes on Earth and the advances in science and technology generated by space exploration. Over 100 students and guests were in attendance and reporters from two newspapers were present. 3. AMSAT News Service on ARISS The AMSAT (Radio Amateur Satellite Corporation) News Service bulletin (ANS-302) posted on October 28 included an item about the upcoming ARISS contact with Florida school children. The contact will be held at the South Florida Science Museum using the radio station WS4FSM, which is maintained by the West Palm Beach Amateur Radio Group. Using closed circuit TV, the contact will be broadcast to all county schools. The contact is scheduled for Tuesday, October 30. An International Space Station school contact has been planned with participants at Southern Tier Catholic and Archbishop Walsh Academy, Olean, NY on 30 Oct. The event is scheduled to begin at approximately 16:16 UTC. The duration of the contact is approximately 9 minutes and 30 seconds. The contact will be a telebridge between OR4ISS and IK1SLD. The contact should be audible over Italy and adjacent areas. Interested parties are invited to listen in on the 145.80 MHz downlink. The contact is expected to be conducted in English. STCS originally opened in 1923 as St. Mary's Academic School next to St. Mary of the Angels parish and has remained open continuously since then. In 1998 St. Mary's School was renamed Southern Tier Catholic School when it became a regional school serving all of the Catholic parishes from Cuba to Salamanca to Ellicottville. STCS is now the only remaining Catholic elementary school in the Southern Tier of western New York between Wellsville to the east and Jamestown to the west. Southern Tier Catholic School's mission is to provide a high quality of education in this tradition. We stresses Catholic Values and Christian Community as a lived experience. In light of this priority, all dimensions of the school (administration, faculty, students and families) make every effort to bring to reality the following: 1. Smith announce that a central Catholic high school was to be established in Olean. The school was to be named after Archbishop Thomas J. Walsh, who had died five years earlier. He also had deep roots in the Southern Tier. Archbishop Walsh is a high school that, in the Franciscan tradition, inspires students to achieve their full potential in spiritual, academic and athletic growth. Cumberland Elementary School is a family-oriented school with a tradition of academic excellence. With approximately 600 students and 60 faculty and support personnel, we are able to get to know your children as individuals. Our average class size is 19-21 which allows us to foster strong interpersonal relationships in a safe school environment. Cumberland Elementary School provides a solid foundation for each student in their individual pursuit of academic excellence. An International Space Station school contact has been planned with participants at South Florida Science Museum, West Palm Beach, FL on 30 Oct. The event is scheduled to begin at approximately 15:58 UTC. The duration of the contact is approximately 9 minutes and 30 seconds. The contact will be direct between NA1SS and WS4FSM. The contact should be audible over the eastern U.S. Interested parties are invited to listen in on the 145.80 MHz downlink. The contact is expected to be conducted in English. The South Florida Science Museum provides curious minds of all ages with an entertaining and educational journey through science and technology. The Museum features more than 50 hands-on exhibits, a digital planetarium, freshwater and saltwater aquariums, as well as natural history exhibitions. Each year the Museum welcomes more than 125,000 visitors and reaches more than 45,000 students through workshops at the Museum and outreach programs to local schools. When the South Florida Science Museum announced that it would be holding an essay contest to determine who would have the privilege of communicating with the International Space Station (ISS), hundreds of students and teachers reached for the stars. Contest participants submitted a 250-word essay on the topic: "Why is space exploration important and what does it mean to me?" The essays were submitted first to school administrators who determined the winning essay from each school. From there, the essays were judged at the South Florida Science Museum by a panel including local media, school district administrators, HAM radio operators and astronomers. Participants will ask as many of the following questions as time allows: 1. Station Experiment Seedling growth 1 (an experiment with growing plants in space) could produce food and air on the space station, and solar panels generate power. Based on this, is NASA planning an experiment on how to produce water in space? 2. Can you describe the integrated cardiovascular experiment you have been performing on this mission? 3. In space the human body is put through so much stress, both physically and mentally, how did you train for this? 4. How has your perspective of spaces, size and expanses changed since leaving Earth? 5. What future space discovery are you most excited about? 6. I heard on the news water was found on Mars, so does that mean people can live there? 7. What was the most interesting experiment you have done in space? 8. What is the most beautiful/inspiring thing you have seen from space? 9. When you look back on your life, what event or activity happened that had the largest impact on your desire to become an Astronaut? 10. Can you see coral reefs from space? 11. What are the benefits of doing experimentation in microgravity? 12. Other than looking at Earth, what brings you peace of mind? 13. Albert Einstein said, "Imagination is more important than knowledge." Have you found this to be true in your work as a space explorer? 14. Can Americans vote in space? 15. What kind of medical testing do you have to undergo to ensure that you are mentally and physically ready to spend long periods of time in space? 16. In space, orbital debris can become a serious problem, I know about once a year the chance of a collision exceeds 1 in 10,000 and the ISS will normally maneuver away from the object (as I believe was just recently done). How does the ISS maneuver in such a way? 17. Would you change anything about your experience working with NASA? 18. What would you like to see NASA do next? 19. How is waste disposal currently handled on the space station and what is your opinion on how waste is disposed of? 20. Acquisition of Signal (AOS) is scheduled for 16:16 UTC The duration of the contact is approximately 9 minutes and 30 seconds. The contact will be a telebridge between OR4ISS and IK1SLD in Italy. The contact is expected to be conducted in English. STCS originally opened in 1923 as St. Mary's Academic School next to St. Mary of the Angels parish and has remained open continuously since then. In 1998 St. Mary's School was renamed Southern Tier Catholic School when it became a regional school serving all of the Catholic parishes from Cuba to Salamanca to Ellicottville. STCS is now the only remaining Catholic elementary school in the Southern Tier of western New York between Wellsville to the east and Jamestown to the west. East Falmouth Elementary School serves a culturally diverse population. In our Title 1 school, 37% of our students are eligible for free or reduced price lunch. Amateur Radio on the International Space Station (ARISS) Status Report October 22, 2012 1. Upcoming School Contacts Meikei High School in Tsukuba, Japan will participate in an Amateur Radio on the International Space Station (ARISS) contact on Tuesday, October 23 at 11:06 UTC. The school was established in 1979 by an alumni association formed principally by the graduates of the University of Tsukuba and Tokyo University of Education. Japanese astronaut Akihiko Hoshide is a graduate of the school. The school's science club has a Radio & Electronics Group with its own radio station, callsign JJ1YAF. Club members and other interested students will learn about the ISS, orbital mechanics and amateur radio satellite communications through this activity. The group will speak with Hoshide during this contact, which will be conducted in Japanese. East Falmouth Elementary School, East Falmouth, Massachusetts will take part in an Amateur Radio on the International Space Station (ARISS) contact on Friday, October 26 at 17:40 UTC. Using NASA resources, students are learning about the solar system, global climate changes on Earth and the advances in science and technology generated by space exploration. 2. Successful ARISS Contacts Held On Tuesday, October 16, CRA Pozohondo in Nava De Abajo (Pozohondo), Spain hosted an Amateur Radio on the International Space Station (ARISS) contact via telebridge station LU8YY in Argentina. ISS astronaut Sunita Williams, KD5PLB chatted with students, answering 20 of their life-in-space questions. The activity was tied to lessons in astronomy, photography, radio and English as a second language. Over 100 students and guests attended. The school has posted video on its Web site: http://edu.jccm.es/cra/cra_pozohondo Students from the Wattsburg Area School District in Erie, Pennsylvania participated in an Amateur Radio on the International Space Station (ARISS) contact with on-orbit astronaut Sunita Williams, KD5PLB on Friday, October 19 via telebridge station VK4KHZ in Australia. Approximately 600 students were in attendance with another 400 participating from their classrooms, connected by internet. The ARISS contact was part of a comprehensive education plan which covers Robotics, Astronomy, Amateur Radio and Science. Scouts visiting the National Scouting Museum in Irving, Texas spoke with Sunita Williams, KD5PLB via an Amateur Radio on the International Space Station (ARISS) contact on Saturday, October 20. The contact was part of the Jamboree on the Air (JOTA) weekend event whereby Scouts of all ages from around the world connect with each other using Amateur Radio equipment. Williams was able to answer over 20 questions put to her by the Scouts and had time for longer than usual answers due to sharing of the contact by Australian telebridge stations VK6MJ and VK5ZAI. The audience consisted of around 200 scouts, parents, and friends and at least three television stations and several newspapers representatives were present. 3. ARISS International Team Meeting Held The ARISS International Team monthly teleconference was held on Tuesday, October 16. A status was given on the HamTV project as well as the new VHF unit to be flown to the ISS and subsequently installed in the Columbus Module. Minutes have been posted. He is slated to fly with Expedition 36 crew in May 2013. 5. ARRL Covers ARISS The American Radio Relay League (ARRL) ran a 3 page article in its November QST about an ARISS teacher and the STEM activities she did prior to and after her ARISS contact. ARRL also posted "Saturday Pacificon Snapshot" which talks about the activities held during the Pacific Division annual convention in Santa Clara, CA, including an ARISS contact between students and Akihiko Hoshide, KE5DNI on ISS. An International Space Station school contact has been planned with participants at Meikei High School, Tsukuba, Japan on 23 Oct. The event is scheduled to begin at approximately 11:06 UTC.The duration of the contact is approximately 9 minutes and 30 seconds. The contact will be direct between NA1SS and JJ1YAF. The contact should be audible over Japan and adjacent areas. Interested parties are invited to listen in on the 145.80 MHz downlink. The contact is expected to be conducted in Japanese. Meikei High School was established in 1979. The founding body of Meikei High School is known as Meikei-kai, an alumni association formed principally by the graduates of the University of Tsukuba and Tokyo University of Education. Mr. Akihiko Hoshide, a Japanese astronaut, is a graduate of our school. And our school has Radio & Electronics Group, as a group of Science Club. An International Space Station school contact has been planned with participants at National Scouting Museum, Irving, TX on 20 Oct. The event is scheduled to begin at approximately 18:32 UTC. The duration of the contact is approximately 9 minutes and 30 seconds. The contact will be a telebridge between NA1SS and VK6MJ. The contact should be audible over portions of the U.S. Interested parties are invited to listen in on the 145.80 MHz downlink. The contact is expected to be conducted in English. 2012 marks the 55th year for Jamboree-on-the-Air (JOTA). Be a part of it at the National Scouting Museum in Irving, TX! JOTA is a World Scouting event that bridges Scouts all over the world via amateur radio. Numerous amateur radio stations will be set up throughout the Museum, allowing for both local and global communication by various modes. There will also be many other fun and educational activities; such as hidden transmitter hunts, electronic project assembly, solar telescopes, demonstrations of satellite communications, and much more throughout the day! This year, as a part of JOTA, the Museum has been selected to participate in a contact opportunity with an astronaut on the International Space Station. Scouts who will get to ask the astronaut a question during the contact have been selected via an essay contest in which they answered the question: Why should we continue space exploration? Everyone can listen in as the selected Scouts communicate with the astronaut! Participants will ask as many of the following questions as time allows: 1. What have you enjoyed studying most during your time as an astronaut? 2. What advice would you give to someone who wants to be an astronaut? 3. Can you tell us about one of the experiments you're doing on the space station, and how it will help us back on Earth? 4. What do you do during your down time aboard the space station? 5. How do you communicate with your family while you are aboard the space station? 6. How many other planets have you seen from the space station? 7. What are the different jobs an astronaut can have on board the space station? 8. Do stars' size and color look different when you see them in space? 9. How long does it take to get to ISS from the earth? 10. What do you do if someone needs medical attention while in space? 11. Which is better, Earth's gravity or weightless in space and why? 12. Would you ever want to go to on a mission to Mars? Why or why not? 13. In Scouting we practice "Leave No Trace", meaning that we leave campsites as we found them. The contact is expected to be conducted in English. The Wattsburg Area School District is a rural district located in Northwest Pennsylvania,10 miles south of Erie, PA. The WASD campus is comprised of 3 schools in which we provide rich and rewarding educational opportunities for over 1500 students in grades K-12. We are especially driven to provide our students with those experiences which will enhance their educational development through continued exposure to Science, Technology, Engineering and Technology courses and curriculum. This radio contact will continue to support our goal to allow each student to experience real world applications as these experiences apply to their coursework by bringing STEM to life. The contact will also arouse continued interest and participation in our extracurricular activities which include Robotics Club, Astronomy Club, Amateur Radio Club, Science Olympiad Team and others. Students have been able to participate in a variety of programs provided by NASA, for example students in the Physics and Physical science classes have recently used the Rocket Modeler program and Water Bottle Rocketry programs to design and launch their own rockets. Students have classroom access to live NASA TV programming and broadcasts through the Internet and via audio retransmissions of NASA TV provided by the local N3UMM/N3BXL 2-Meter Amateur Radio Repeater. Students are monitoring activities aboard the ISS and are able to track the location of the ISS and other satellites using tracking software in the classroom. One of our high school students participating today has applied to and is hoping for acceptance to the United States Naval Academy and hopes to follow in Astronaut Suni Williams footsteps and become an engineer and maybe an astronaut. Students are learning about astronomy, photography and radio communications among other topics. The ARISS contact will be one of the hands-on activities highlighting these subjects. NASA astronaut Michael Fincke has been invited to attend the event. The contact will stimulate interest and participation in extracurricular activities including the Robotics Club, Astronomy Club, Amateur Radio Club, Science Olympiad Team and others. An Amateur Radio on the International Space Station (ARISS) contact has been scheduled for the National Scouting Museum, Irving, Texas on Saturday, October 20 at 18:32 UTC via telebridge station VK6MJ in Australia. The Boy Scouts of America hosts an annual international event, Jamboree on the Air (JOTA), which is in its 55th year, whereby Scouts of all ages from around the world connect with each other using Amateur Radio equipment. The National Scouting Museum has been a site for, and hosted an event in conjunction with JOTA for four years. 2. ARISS Contacts Held Students from St. George's International School in Luxembourg participated in a Q&A session with Sunita Williams, KD5PLB on Monday, October 8 via an Amateur Radio on the International Space Station (ARISS) contact. The radio connection was handled by telebridge station W6SRJ in California. Approximately 700 students, teachers and guests were in attendance - 200 in the gym watched live and another 500 in the classrooms watched a "live stream" of the contact. The audience included several VIPs: the UK Ambassador Alice Walpole, the Head Teacher Heather Duxbury and the Deputy Head Teachers (Kath Griffiths and Mark Stenton) of both primary and secondary sections. Guest speakers gave talks on satellites as well as the NASA "Moon Buggie" project. The contact was one of the educational activities the students from both sections took part in to learn about electricity, astronomy and physics. On Tuesday, October 9, Liceo Statale Adelaide Cairoli in Pavia, Italy took part in its Amateur Radio on the International Space Station (ARISS) contact via station W6SRJ in California. On-orbit astronaut Sunita Williams, KD5PLB, was able to answer 18 questions during the contact as nearly 1100 students gathered for the event. The school uses amateur radio as a teaching tool and its radio club provides students the opportunity to speak with other amateurs all over the world using different languages. This ARISS contact was used to focus on technology, science and foreign languages. Telebridge station IK1SLD in Italy provided the radio connection. Astronaut Akihiko Hoshide, KE5DNI, on the ISS participated in the contact which was the featured event of the PACIFICON Youth Program that emphasized hands-on radio operation, electronics kit building, orbital mathematics and CubeSat satellite design, among other STEM activities. Fellow astronaut Dr. Lee Morin gave a presentation at the event and exchanged greetings with Hoshide at the end of the ISS pass. An audience of approximately 150 was present for the contact; 2500 attended the convention. 3. An International Space Station school contact has been planned with participants at CRA Pozohondo, Nava De Abajo (Pozohondo), Spain on 16 Oct. The event is scheduled to begin at approximately 09:26 UTC. The duration of the contact is approximately 9 minutes and 30 seconds. The contact will be a telebridge between NA1SS and LU8YY. The contact should be audible over Argentina and portions of S. America. Interested parties are invited to listen in on the 145.80 MHz downlink. The contact is expected to be conducted in English. Our school is officially named CRA ( Colegio Rural Agrupado) because it is located in a small village called Nava de Abajo and it only has got 30 pupils from kindergarten ( 3 to 5 years old) to the last level of Primary School ( 11- 12 years old pupils). The building is also small and we are only four teachers so the students are organized mixed levels: Kindergarten, 6-7 years, 8-9 years and 10-11 years. Regarding to this activity it is remarkable the special interest that the teachers and students show in the knowledge of the Universe, that is why we have developed astrophotography, astronomy ,´astro-tales´ and radio ham studios. Please join us in listening to the ISS contact with participants at theARRL Pacific Division Conference, Santa Clara, CA on 13 Oct. The event is scheduled to begin at approximately 18:57 UTC. The duration of the contact is approximately 9 minutes and 30 seconds. The contact will be a telebridge between OR4ISS and IK1SLD. The contact should be audible over the Italy and adjacent areas. Interested parties are invited to listen in on the 145.80 MHz downlink. The contact is expected to be conducted in English. PACIFICON 2012, a premiere wireless event, will be held October 12, 13, and 14, 2012 and will host the 2012 ARRL National Convention and Exposition. Over 2,500 amateur radio enthusiasts are expected to attend. The 2012 PACIFICON Youth program includes a “Youth Lounge” and forums throughout the convention weekend; the Youth program is positioned in the middle of the exhibit hall and provides STEM educational goals which include hands on radio operation, electronics kit building and soldering classes, Ohm’s Law, orbital mathematics, CubeSat satellite design, and popular radio transmitter T-Hunts. A scheduled ARISS radio contact and a presentation by NASA astronaut, Dr. Lee M. Morin KF5DDB, will highlight the Youth Lounge activities. Free admission is provided to Girl Scouts, Boy Scouts, Camp Fire Girls, Brownie, Cub Scouts, Explorer Scouts, 4-H members, and to all youth. The Youth Forum will include young Amateur radio enthusiasts Andrea Hartlege KG4IUM, former ARRL South Eastern Division Vice Director and Katie Stensrud K7KTI, a young ham from Nevada, and many amateur radio educational resources from the ARRL & AMSAT. Pacificon 2012 will operate the convention FCC Special Event Station W6P, the ARRL’s W1AW/6, additional stations will be operated remotely from the convention site as well as two fully automated satellite earth stations. PACIFICON 2012 will offer over 120 educational forums and programs, including a forum hosted by AMSAT on Amateur Satellite Communications, approximately sixteen indoor on-the-air exhibits, and eight outdoor on-the-air exhibits will be hosted. The 2012 PACIFICON Youth program includes a “Youth Lounge” and forums throughout the convention weekend; the Youth program is positioned in the middle of the exhibit hall and provides STEM educational goals which include hands on radio operation, electronics kit building and soldering classes, Ohm’s Law, orbital mathematics, CubeSat satellite design, and popular radio transmitter T-Hunts. A scheduled ARISS radio contact and a presentation by NASA astronaut, Dr. Lee M. Morin KF5DDB, will highlight the Youth Lounge activities. Free admission is provided to Girl Scouts, Boy Scouts, Camp Fire Girls, Brownie, Cub Scouts, Explorer Scouts, 4-H members, and to all youth. Did it flap in the wind? 11. What is the most memorable view of Earth you have seen from space? 12. How long can someone live on the space station? 13. How is being in space different than you thought it would be? 14. What are the 3 most important things for someone to do or learn before they apply to be an astronaut? 15. How far away are you and how long will it take you to get back home? 16. Can you and do you eat ice cream in outer space? Amateur Radio on the International Space Station (ARISS) Status Report October 9, 2012 1. Upcoming School Contact An Amateur Radio on the International Space Station (ARISS) contact is planned for PACIFICON, Santa Clara, California on Saturday, October 13 at 18:57 UTC. Station IK1SLD in Italy will handle the radio hook-up. PACIFICON is the American Radio Relay League (ARRL) Pacific Division annual convention which is hosted and organized by the Mount Diablo Amateur Radio Club (MDARC). PACIFICON 2012 will be held October 12-14 and will host the 2012 ARRL National Convention and Exposition. Over 2,500 amateur radio enthusiasts are expected to attend. The PACIFICON Youth Program provides STEM educational goals which will include hands on radio operation, electronics kit building and soldering classes, Ohms Law, orbital mathematics, CubeSat satellite design, and popular radio transmitter T-Hunts. The ARISS contact will be integrated into the Youth Program to demonstrate earth to space communications and to inspire youth attending the event to consider STEM-related careers. 2. Izmir, Turkey School Hosts ARISS Contact On Friday, October 5, students from Izmir SEV Primary School in Turkey participated in an Amateur Radio on the International Space Station (ARISS) contact with astronaut Sunita Williams, KD5PLB via station K6DUE in Greenbelt, Maryland. Williams answered all 20 questions posed to her during the event which drew an audience of over 800 students and was heard all over Turkey. The contact highlighted a science curriculum which included other NASA activities such as First Lego League Robotic Teams and Destination Imagination Teams. 3. Sunita Williams Chats with Malaysian Students Sekolah Kebangsaan students in Putrajaya, Malaysia spoke with Sunita Williams, KD5PLB aboard the ISS through an Amateur Radio on the International Space Station (ARISS) contact on Sunday, October 7. The school was invited to participate in the contact by the National Space Agency Satellite Ground Station, 9M2RPN, in conjunction with the Prime Ministers National Space Challenge Trophy 2012, an annual event since 2007 when the Malaysian astronaut, Dr. Sheikh Muszaphar Shukor, flew to the ISS. 4. ARISS Educator Interviewed Gladys Muñoz, a teacher at the Marcelino Canino Canino Middle School in Puerto Rico, was interviewed for a blog by Mr. Anthony Salcito, vice president for education Microsoft Worldwide Enterprises. This took place during her stay in Lima, Peru for Microsofts Latin America Forum for Innovative Education where she presented a summary of some of her schools aerospace education projects. The duration of the contact is approximately 9 minutes and 30 seconds. The contact will be a telebridge between NA1SS and W6SRJ. The contact should be audible over the west coast of the U.S. Interested parties are invited to listen in on the 145.80 MHz downlink. The contact is expected to be conducted in English. The school, founded in 1862 in Pavia, has been in the "Palazzo Olevano", since 1870 is called Adelaide Cairoli, "the glorious mother of five fighting for the unification of Italy". The Institute has kept this name and is famous foe its magnificent rooms with frescoes, monumental stairs, stucco, mirrors, full of memories but one of the most modern educational facilities, which offers three types of courses (Language High School, High School of Music, School of Humanities and Science). The school offers an extensive cultural background, favors the development of communication skills both in the mother tongue and in foreign languages. It prepares the students for university helping the student choose the most suitable university course. The school has about 50 classes with approx 1400 students. The Radio Club has been founded to give students the opportunity to talk to the amateurs of the other stations all over the world using different languages. We think that radio is a powerful teaching tool, which can be useful in everyday school activities. Participants will ask as many of the following questions as time allows: 1. An International Space Station school contact has been planned with participants at St George's International School, Luxembourg on 08 Oct. The event is scheduled to begin at approximately 10:47 UTC. The duration of the contact is approximately 9 minutes and 30 seconds. The contact will be telebridge between NA1SS and W6SRJ. The contact should be audible over portions of the western U.S. and adjacent areas. Interested parties are invited to listen in on the 145.80 MHz downlink. The contact is expected to be conducted in English. St George's International School was founded 20 years ago by a group of mothers. It has since then expanded to comprise a Primary and Secondary section. There are approximately 680 students, of which 2/3 are in Primary education ranging from Early Years (2 1/2) to Year 6 (11 yrs old). There are 40 different nationalities represented, comprising some 20 different native language speakers other than English. As the school year only began a few days ago, the children have not yet benefited from all the planned conference and activities. A satellite engineer, who works for the EuroSpace will be visiting to speak to the children this coming Friday (28th Sept). There are other speakers lined up: someone to explain the importance of radios; a space enthusiast and engineer is to give a talk about the Moon Buggie as well as a visit to the European Space Interactive Museum in Belgium. The school was recently offered a scaled model of the ISS which will be displayed and used for teaching purposes. Besides the talks, the whole of Primary is engaging in learning about the various aspects of "Space". While some year groups are learning about light and dark, others are doing the planets and space travel, while others still are learning about sound and light. And the Secondary science teachers have incorporated the ISS project into their curriculum. As all the children cannot be accommodated in the hall at one time due to security issues, it has been decided that less than half will actually see the children asking their questions. However, a link to the various classrooms will allow the other children in the school to attend 'via satellite'. Participants will ask as many of the following questions as time allows: 1. What is it like to see Earth from up there? 2. What planet do you come from? 3. Can you see the sunlight hitting Earth when in space? 4. Why do you have to wear space suits? 5. How many people can be on the ISS at once? 6. How does being in space affect your body? 7. How do you entertain yourselves? 8. Is it hard to fall asleep? 9. How do you cope with weightlessness? 10. Are you bringing anything back from Space? 11. If someone gets sick, what do you do? 12. How did you get chosen for this mission? 13. What is your job on the ISS? 14. Is there anything you are not allowed to eat? 15. How do you protect the ISS from asteroids and meteorites? 16. Where do you get rid of your waste? 17. What kind of science experiments do you do? 18. How do you repair the space station if something breaks? 19. How do you manage to stay going around the Earth at that speed? 20. For US schools to have an ARISS contact, they must fill out a proposal, submit it to NASA, and see if they are approved or not. Once a school is approved and put on the list, an ARISS mentor will be assigned to assist the school. NASA will have two open windows a year for schools to submit a proposal. The window for contacts during the second half of 2012 has already closed. Look for the window for first half 2013 contacts later this year. You must go through NASA to get the proposal material. An International Space Station school contact has been planned with participants at Izmir SEV Primary School, Izmir, Turkey on 05 Oct. The event is scheduled to begin at approximately 08:32 UTC. The duration of the contact is approximately 9 minutes and 30 seconds. The contact will be a telebridge between NA1SS and K6DUE. The contact should be audible over the east coast of the U.S. Interested parties are invited to listen in on the 145.80 MHz downlink. The contact is expected to be conducted in English. Ýzmir SEV Elementary School is a private, national school which was founded as K-8 school 1997. The philosophy of Izmir SEV is to enrich and expand upon the curriculum provided by the Turkish Ministry of Education. We aim to provide students with a solid foundation for continuing education at institutions of higher learning through developing the skills of observation, inquiry, and research in our students. SEV recognizes each student as an individual and strives to develop their cognitive, social and emotional potential. Ýzmir SEV aims to prepare students for their further education and for life by developing them in their areas of interest and abilities. How long is a day on the ISS? Is it 24 hours? 10. How can you tell when it's morning / night while you are on the ISS? 11. What does it feel like to be in a microgravity environment? 12. Amateur Radio on the International Space Station (ARISS) Status Report October 1, 2012 1. Upcoming School Contacts Izmir SEV Primary School, located in Turkey, has been scheduled for an Amateur Radio on the International Space Station (ARISS) contact on Friday, October 5 at 08:32 UTC via telebridge station K6DUE in Greenbelt, Maryland. The school participates in the Partner School Science Program, which is a program under Global Friendship Through Space Education, a California-based non-profit organization that promotes friendship among young people from different countries and cultures through the study of space-related science and technology. Students communicate about space-related projects via e-mail, collaborate on research on NASA's distance-learning Web site, and videoconference between partner schools and NASA. First Lego League Robotic Teams and Destination Imagination Teams have been a part of school activities annually since 2005. Invitations to attend this event have been extended to several VIPs including the minister of transportation, the president of the board of education, the director of education, the mayor of Izmir and the governor of Izmir. Sekolah Kebangsaan in Putrajaya, Malaysia will experience an Amateur Radio on the International Space Station (ARISS) contact on Sunday, October 7 at 11:04 UTC. The school was invited to participate by the National Space Agency Satellite Ground Station, 9M2RPN in conjunction with the "Prime Minister's National Space Challenge Trophy 2012," an annual event since 2007 when a Malaysia astronaut flew to the ISS. 2. Successful Contact Held with Waxter Young Women's Academy An Amateur Radio on the International Space Station (ARISS) contact was held between students at the Waxter Young Women's Academy in Laurel, Maryland and Akihiko Hoshide, KE5DNI aboard the ISS on Monday, September 24. Telebridge station LU8YY in Argentina handled the radio connection. The girls were able to have all 13 of their questions answered with enough time left to thank Hoshide for participating. Phone lines throughout the center were made available so that other students could listen in as well. The ARISS contact was part of a comprehensive education plan used to interest students in Science, Technology, Engineering and Math (STEM). 3. Sunita Williams Speaks with Halifax Students On Wednesday, September 26, Sacred Heart School of Halifax in Nova Scotia, Canada participated in an Amateur Radio on the International Space Station (ARISS) contact with on-orbit astronaut Sunita Williams, KD5PLB. The contact was scheduled for 16:07 UTC, and telebridge station LU8YY in Argentina connected with Williams, but the international phone line, which was to connect Argentina to Halifax, went down and could not be brought up until after the ISS had passed overhead. Williams agreed to try the contact again on the next pass. Ninety minutes later, the audience of 250 got what they had been waiting for - a successful contact! The students got in 17 questions, and one student was wished a Happy Birthday by the ISS commander. Thanks to all who helped the school complete its contact.
