An International Space Station school contact has been planned with participants at 5th Geniko Lykeio Katerinis, Katerini, Greece on 02 Mar. The event is scheduled to begin at approximately 17:03 UTC. The duration of the contact is approximately 9 minutes and 30 seconds. The contact will be direct between OR4ISS and SX2ISS. The contact should be audible over Greece and adjacent areas. Interested parties are invited to listen in on the 145.80 MHz downlink. The contact is expected to be conducted in English. 5th Geniko Lykeio Katerinis is an upper high school with approximately 440 students, aged 14 to 19. It is a new school (established in 2007). There are two schools together in two buildings connected in format of letter "U". The other school is the 2nd Lyceum of Katerini with another 450 students. Although the school is new, it has many things to show to its students, the parents and the local community. The school has won prizes and honours in various fields (cultural, athletic, scientific) and its graduates have been accepted in major universities in Greece. Participants will ask as many of the following questions as time allows: 1. While on space, do you realize the time passing by faster or slower than on earth? 2. Were you inspired by astronauts or ex-astronauts to become an astronaut as well? 3. For how long are you trained before going to space? 4. Have there been any experiment regarding the reproduction of humans or other species in space ? 5. Does your team fully change each semester? 6. Which earth observation made the greatest impression to you? 7. What are you dealing with currently? 8. Are you working on the structure of matter and if yes, what does your research include, in a few words? 9. Do the conditions of space favour the conduct of some experiment's that cannot be performed in the conditions of the earth? 10. To become an astronaut, did your family encourage you on this decision? 11. How do you feel when you meet your family on earth? 12. Do you communicate with your family and how often? 13. Do you study about weather conditions. Can you predict storms? For example? 14. How are your living conditions beyond earth? 15. Does the global financial crisis affect the astronauts? 16. Which was your latest discovery? 17. Is it hard to live in space? 18. How is your everyday life? 19. Does the food you eat contain any kind of vitamins? 20. An International Space Station school contact has been planned with participants at Parkside Elementary, Atlanta, GA on 02 Mar. The event is scheduled to begin at approximately 16:42 UTC. The duration of the contact is approximately 9 minutes and 30 seconds. The contact will be a telebridge between NA1SS and K6DUE. The contact should be audible over the east coast of the U.S. Interested parties are invited to listen in on the 145.80 MHz downlink. The contact is expected to be conducted in English. Parkside Elementary School is located in urban Atlanta. The facility is recognized as a Title I public school with over 550 students enrolled in pre-kindergarten to 5th grade. The student population is comprised of 77% Black, 13% White, 6% Hispanic and 4% Asian students. The school uses a wide range of technology equipment to help students learn and grow as individuals, including Mac computers, video iPods and interactive white boards among many other types of technology. The school also has numerous clubs which students can join including a chess club, robotics club, public speaking club and rocketry club among many others. At Parkside Elementary School, our objective is to ensure that each student is offered a quality education in a safe, caring and orderly environment. Educational experiences at Parkside provide global perspectives and appreciation for cultural diversity. We encourage high academic performance and involve our students in a rigorous and challenging curriculum. Parkside has launched a STEM initiative to inspire students to seek future careers in the areas of Math and Science and also experience some of the research challenges facing today's scientists and engineers. The ARISS contact supplements our district and the next phase of our school's STEM initiative; to develop an amateur radio club in addition to dedicating an instructional week to NASA related activities for our school community to partake. Our students are excited about the upcoming ISS contact event that will provide our special education students of ages 8-12; both males and females, a once in a lifetime opportunity to make contact with crew members aboard the International Space Station. I was reading the bulletin about the ISS making contacts this past weekend. Has there been a change in the operating uplink for the regions?? The bulletin states that you must uplink on 145.200mhz. I know that the past contacts uplinks were region dependent. Upcoming School Contacts An Amateur Radio on the International Space Station (ARISS) contact has been scheduled for Parkside Elementary School in Atlanta, Georgia on Friday, March 2 at 16:42 UTC via station K6DUE in Greenbelt, Maryland. The ARISS contact is part of a comprehensive education plan which will pique students' interest in Science, Technology, Engineering and Math (STEM). An article about this contact appears on the NASA Talk Web site where ideas are shared about the contact and lesson plans. Contact audio may be available on NASA-TV. http://nasatalk.com/component/resource/article/bylines/164-nasa-and-stem-re… The 5th Geniko Lykeio Katerinis in Katerini, Greece has been scheduled for an Amateur Radio on the International Space Station (ARISS) contact on Friday, March 2 at 17:03 UTC. This activity has been integrated into the school curriculum covering astronomy and ham radio issues. Special attention has been given to the ISS regarding its role in humanity and science, its orbit and the every day life of the astronaut. ISS courses were based on ESA's education tool, "ISS Education Kit." 2. ARISS Contact Featured at John Glenn Event On Monday, February 20, an ARISS contact was held during the John Glenn Event at the State Records Office of Western Australia in Perth, via telebridge station AH6NM in Hawaii. The contact was held in celebration of the 50th anniversary of John Glenn's orbit of the Earth, when the population of Perth turned on its lights and Glenn observed the city was visible from space, leading to Perth's nickname, "City of Lights." The event opened with a pre-recorded video address given by Senator Glenn. Speeches from Australia's leading scientists were also given, followed by the ARISS contact with Dan Burbank, KC5ZSX on the ISS. The event was streamed live on the internet and was covered by television stations and ABC (Australian Broadcasting Corporation) Radio. 3. Italian Students Experience ARISS Contact An Amateur Radio on the International Space Station (ARISS) contact was held between 1° Circolo Didattico Nicola Fornelli located in Bitonto, Italy and on-orbit astronaut Don Pettit, KD5MDT on Friday, February 24. The students had all their questions addressed concerning what it takes to become an astronaut and what it is like to live on the ISS. The contact highlighted their studies covering life in space, communications, space conquests and research, artificial satellites and the ISS. Approximately 300 people turned out for the event, including Italian Air Force officers and media representatives. 4. ARISS International Team Teleconference Held The monthly ARISS International Team teleconference was held on Tuesday, February 21. Topics of discussion included a World Radiocommunication Conference 2012 (WRC-12) abstract concerning nano- and picosatellites, the status of Ham TV and an update on the replacement VHF Ericsson. Astronaut Training Status Astronaut Alexander Gerst, who passed his amateur radio license exam on February 13, has been given the callsign KF5ONO. He is scheduled to fly with Expedition 40 in May 2014. An introductory session is planned for Gregory Wiseman, KF5LKT (Expedition 40, May 2014) on Monday, February 27 and a preflight session is scheduled for Expedition 32 astronauts Sunita Williams, KD5PLB and Akihiko Hoshide, KE5DNI on Monday, March 5. Williams and Hoshide will fly later this year.

School 1: American school of the Hague American School of The Hague offers a learner-centered, American curriculum modified for the needs of an international student and parent population. Our student body is comprised of 1,100 students from 70 nationalities, with 30% US, 10% Dutch and 60% representing 66 other nationalities. Students at American School of The Hague are aged 3 to 18 years, with complete Early Childhood, Middle and High School programs, including International Baccalaureate Diploma and Certificate, and Advanced Placement courses. The School prides itself on offering every student the opportunity to fully explore each of their interests with a wide variety of extracurricular activities, such as The Hague Model United Nations, dramatic and musical performances and athletic teams in 10 sports, to name just a few. Please join us in listening to the ISS contact with participants at the ESA - ESTEC Event, Noordwijk, Netherlands on Monday Feb 27, 2011 at 1245 UTC The schools that are involved are: American school of the Hague, International School of Amsterdam, and The British School in the Netherlands. The duration of the contact is approximately 9 minutes and 30 seconds. The contact will be a telebridge between NA1SS and IK1SLD in Italy. The contact should be audible over Europe. The contact is expected to be conducted in English. Audio from this contact will be fed into the: EchoLink *AMSAT* (101377) and *JK1ZRW* (277208) servers IRLP Node 9010 Discovery Reflector Audio on Echolink is generally transmitted around 20 minutes prior to the contact taking place so that you can hear some of the preparation that occurs. IRLP will begin just prior to the ground station call to the ISS. Please note that on Echolink there are automatic breaks of 1.5 seconds in the audio transmission. These occur every 2.5 minutes during the event. Breaks on IRLP are manual and occur approximately after every third question. ** Contact times are approximate. Amateur Radio on the International Space Station (ARISS) Status Report February 20, 2012 1. Upcoming School Contact 1° Circolo Didattico Nicola Fornelli located in Bitonto, Italy has been scheduled for an Amateur Radio on the International Space Station (ARISS) contact on Friday, February 24 at 14:01 UTC. The contact will be an integral part of student studies covering life in space, communications, space conquests and research, artificial satellites and the ISS. 2. Kochi Youth Radio ISS Astronaut Kochi Gakuen Kochi Junior High School in Kochi, Japan experienced a successful Amateur Radio on the International Space Station (ARISS) contact on Monday, February 13. Students asked Dan Burbank, KC5ZSX, 11 questions about living in space. The contact was integrated into the science curriculum. Media coverage included three television stations and three newspapers. 3. Astronaut Dan Burbank Speaks with Louisville Students On Tuesday, February 14, youth attending The Academy @ Shawnee participated in an Amateur Radio on the International Space Station (ARISS) contact with on-orbit astronaut Dan Burbank, KC5ZSX via telebridge station ON4ISS in Belgium. The contact took place at the Challenger Learning Center in Louisville, Kentucky with the assistance of the Louisville Astronomical Society. Approximately 40 people were in attendance and listened as Burbank chatted with students about experiments onboard the ISS and the effect space has on the human body, among other topics. The Academy, an inner city high school of 500 students, has been designated as the Aerospace Magnet School for Jefferson County Public Schools. The contact was part of a comprehensive education plan to pique students' interest in Science, Technology, Engineering and Math. 4. Astronaut Training Status Astronaut Alexander Gerst passed his amateur radio license exam on February 13 and is waiting for his callsign to be assigned. He is scheduled to fly with Expedition 40 in May 2014. An introductory session is planned for Gregory Wiseman, KF5LKT (Expedition 40, May 2014) on Monday, February 27 and a preflight session is scheduled for Expedition 32 astronauts Sunita Williams, KD5PLB and Akihiko Hoshide, KE5DNI on Monday, March 5. Williams and Hoshide will fly later this year.

An International Space Station school contact has been planned with participants at 1° Circolo Didattico Nicola Fornelli, Bitonto, Italy on 24 Feb. The event is scheduled to begin at approximately 14:01 UTC. The duration of the contact is approximately 9 minutes and 30 seconds. The contact will be direct between OR4ISS and IZ7RTN. The contact should be audible over Italy and adjacent areas. Interested parties are invited to listen in on the 145.80 MHz downlink. The contact is expected to be conducted in Italian or English. 1° Circolo Didattico"N. Fornelli" Bitonto is an educational primary school, placed in the centre of the pleasant town of Bitonto, Apulia, south of Italy, the "olive town" famous all over the world. This is the oldest elementary school in bitonto, an architectural building in the centre of the city. In the primary school there are 810 students. There are 4 nursery schools with 415 pupils. The school has large open spaces, a gym, a library with about 6000 books and 4 laboratories. Participants will ask as many of the following questions as time allows: 1. What do you feel when you float weightlessly in the Space Station? 2. What is the temperature outside the ISS? 3. How can you avoid collisions with meteoroids or space debris? 4. On board the Space Station, is there a system to recycle oxygen? 5. How long is the rehabilitation to the Earth's gravity when returning on Earth? 6. What feelings do you experience living for such a long mission surrounded by the immensity of space, do you feel privileged? 7. What inspired you to become an astronaut? 8. What temperature are tolerable by a space suit? 9. What kind of studies did you attend to become an astronaut? 10. What is the most difficult task for the commander of the International Space Station? 11. What kind of experiments are currently underway aboard the ISS? 12. Which part of our planet are you looking at right now? 13. During the day do you have free time? 14. Do you feel safe on board the ISS? 15. Who would you like to dedicate this experience in space? 16. How would your life change after this adventure in space? 17. All, Since I stepped down from the ARISS International Chair position in 2009, I have not been very prolific on the SAREX listserv. But if you do not get ANS, you might not have seen that Dick Daniels, W4PUJ, a great SAREX & ARISS volunteer, just passed away. I have included the phenomenal description of Dick and his contributions to AMSAT, that was authored by renown AMSAT member Jan King, W3GEY/VK4GEY for ANS. >From my perspective, Dick was one of AMSAT's best of the best..a solid contributor and a solid human being. Dick continually provided the ARISS and the SAREX teams outstanding guidance, mentoring and advice over the years. His knowledge of the inner workings at NASA Headquarters and his thorough understanding of how the NASA political winds were blowing helped tremendously in promoting amateur radio on Human Spaceflight Vehicles. Dick was instrumental in getting several NASA agreements for the SAREX program solidified. And he made it a point to attend and contribute to all the ARISS meetings held in the Washington DC area. W4PUJ supported all the ARISS contacts in the DC area as photographer as well as manning the booth and answering questions at our events. And Dick and his wife Jackie were prime helpers for the two AMSAT symposiums that my wife Janet and I co-chaired. Dick was one fine gentleman. And you can see that he was a phenomenal Amateur Radio Humans Spaceflight supporter. I will miss Dick Daniels, W4PUJ, tremendously. My condolences to all who knew Dick. And especially to his wife Jackie and his family. 73, Frank H. Bauer, KA3HDO --------------------------------------------- Dick Daniels (W4PUJ) - SK, 1932 - 2012 By Jan A. King W3GEY/VK4GEY One of AMSAT's most important, admired and well loved members, Dick Daniels, W4PUJ, ex WA4DGU, died on February 14, 2012. He lost his battle with lung cancer, diagnosed only at Christmas time 2011. Dick achieved so much working for AMSAT that it is virtually impossible to enumerate his individual accomplishments. And we cannot overestimate the importance of his sustained support. Dick was many things to us but, among them he was our record keeper, photographic recorder, and the de facto AMSAT historian. So, his loss also represents the loss of many memories of the things we did and the places we've gone as an organization, which simply can't be recorded or kept except in a mind. So, our loss is huge! The records of our earlier spacecraft developments, starting with Australis-OSCAR-5 and continuing to pre- sent, amount to over 6,000 individual (non-duplicate) 35 mm slides. These have since been digitized. These were all kept and maintained by him. Many of the photos were his own. Dick was born in Cincinnati, Ohio on May 19, 1932. He received a BBA degree from the University of Cincinnati in Business Management in 1956 and an MBA from the University of Pennsylvania Wharton Graduate School in 1957. He joined NASA HQ in 1961 where he remained until his retirement in 1994. Dick became a licensed radio amateur in 1959. He was involved with the formation of AMSAT in 1970 and served on the AMSAT Board of Directors from 1992 to 2003. Dick was one of the initial AMSAT members and was Life Member 11. His first major contribution to amateur radio was his work to obtain per- mission from the NASA Administrator (then James Fletcher) and the NOAA Administrator (then Jack Townsend) for the launch of Australis- OSCAR-5. It was Dick who pushed our AMSAT letter proposal for the launch of AO-5 through the NASA and NOAA systems. Dick was also heav- ily involved in our efforts to license AO5 with the FCC. That was a much bigger deal back in 1970 than it is today. Few will appreciate the resistance we had within the system from the TIROS project office at NASA/GSFC and what had to be done to overcome it. Few will also remember the support we had from places we didn't expect, but, with Dick's help and all of us pushing - we were in "business" - the "business" of building satellites for free. Dick became AMSAT-NA's primary mechanical designer and technician, having helped design and then assemble just about every spacecraft structure we launched starting with AMSAT-OSCAR-6. At the beginning of the Phase-3 era it became clear that AMSAT needed to go into the propulsion business if we were going to get to higher orbits and Dick took on the role of chief propulsion expert, in addition to his mechanical technician duties. Dick and I installed the Thiokol solid propellant kick motor into the ill-fated Phase-3A satellite once it arrived in French Guiana and it was Dick, working with MBB who loaded the bi-propellant fuels (UDMH or AZ-50 and N2O4) on-board AO-10, AO-13 and AO-40 (all very dangerous compounds). Even though the rocket motor each time was pure German technology, Dick was the one we all trusted to handle the exacting task of propellant loading. He also developed, assembled and tested all of the PFAs (propellant flow assembly) units that controlled the fuel flow and pressurization of each of the propulsion systems. He also contributed significantly to their design details. The utilization of real, high performance propulsion systems on small satellites is still something no other small satellite organization other than AMSAT has successfully achieved. Few have even attempted to follow in our footsteps. We've had our difficulties with rocket motors (and what organization that has tried to use them has not?) but, at least AO-13 was perfect. No professional organization has ever done much better than the perform- ance of that propulsion system. And, in large measure, the success of that system can be credited to Dick Daniels. The other P3 satel- lites, at least had partially successful motor firings, except for Phase-3A which was lost due to a launch vehicle failure, hence we never had a chance to fire our solid rocket motor. Dick constructed the AO-6 2M/10M repeater (or transponder) designed by Perry Klein (W3PK) and Karl Meinzer (DJ4ZC). He also constructed the follow-on unit flown on AO-7. He assembled major portions of the receiver units forming both the command system and packet communica- tions system developed by Tom Clark (W3IWI) for the four Microsat spacecraft launched in 1990. Dick assembled so much hardware that if you were to look at each individual sub-assembly that he built or worked on - as they exist in our master photo set - and you viewed each slide for 10 seconds, it would take over an hour to view all of them! That is a lot of space flight hardware. Dick loved space flight, he loved the challenge represented by the amateur satellite program and he loved working with our many friends around the world. Together we accomplished something that will take years before others reproduce. More importantly, with Dick's huge support we actually created a new industry. Few lives can claim to have done that. The Small Satellite Industry is very alive and well and, as a sector of all space commerce it is now the fastest growing area. If Dick had not made his contributions, AMSAT would have had a very different history but, because of him and others who worked so hard to get things started, AMSAT is at the root of all of today's small satellite technology. This is a fact, not wishful thinking. Dick also loved nature and the outdoors. We spent many happy times hiking in the mountains of Virginia, using the "famous" Daniels "cabin" as a base camp. We had great times chasing butterflies and watching sea turtles in French Guiana. Dick has a wonderful family and even though AMSAT took a significant fraction of his free time his daughter Kathy and his son Robert are proud of his accomplish- ments. Like all AMSAT "widows" Jackie supported Dicks "hobby" with enthusiasm and never complained about her time alone when Dick was integrating AMSAT spacecraft on the night shift (sometimes at home and sometimes with me at the AMSAT lab). His family will miss him terribly as he was not just an average father and husband. Dick spent a lot of time working on the gantry level of many launch vehicles, installing AMSAT spacecraft on Delta and Ariane launchers and, as a NASA-HQ employee, he built more space flight hardware in his basement than anyone working for NASA in Washington, D.C. ever even saw in a lifetime. He loved life and he made his count. And he made a huge difference to the outcome of our hobby and our belief in what an individual can do in space. So, we've lost someone that meant a lot to us all and someone who will be impossible to replace. History may repeat itself but, it will be a long time before someone like Dick Daniels, with his uni- que set of skills comes our way again. So, W4PUJ is SK. This is a sad day for amateur radio and to the small satellite space commun- ity and even more for those of us who loved him. Dick, you made a difference and it will be a long time still before others reach where you have been. What you did wasn't just worthwhile - IT WAS FANTASTIC! An International Space Station school contact has been planned with participants at Special John Glenn event, State Records Office of Western Australia, Perth, Western Australia, Australia on 20 Feb. The event is scheduled to begin at approximately 10:23 UTC. The duration of the contact is approximately 9 minutes and 30 seconds. The contact will be a telebridge between NA1SS and AH6NM. The contact should be audible over Hawaii and adjacent areas. Interested parties are invited to listen in on the 145.80 MHz downlink. The contact is expected to be conducted in English. On February 20, this year, WA will celebrate the 50th anniversary of a very significant event. On that day in 1962, John Glenn became the first American to orbit the Earth in the Friendship 7 spacecraft. On this mission, Glenn flew over Perth and the people of Perth turned on their lights to acknowledge his mission. Glenn observed that the city was clearly visible from space and Perth became known worldwide as the 'City of Light'. This early space exploration mission set the stage for the Gemini and Apollo programs which culminated in NASA landing men on the moon. To commemorate the 50th anniversary of Glenn's orbit, on Monday 20 February 2012 Perth will stage a public event at the Northbridge Piazza, featuring a live audio link to the International Space Station as it orbits the Earth. The highlight of the event will be the recorded opening address by John Glenn and an opportunity for young people to speak with and ask questions of the astronauts on the International Space Station. Participants will ask as many of the following questions as time allows: 1. What is the reason for space exploration? 2. What is it like to float in space? 3. How did the engineers make the space station have enough oxygen for the astronauts? 4. Are your dreams different in space? 5. What do I need to study at school to become an astronaut? 6. Does living in space affect your behavior or emotions? 7. Can a bird fly in zero gravity? 8. Have you always wanted to be an astronaut since you were a little boy? If not what other jobs did you want? 9. When you get back down to Earth, do you think you would be confused which way is which? 10. There are so many things you can do on a space station. IRLP will begin just prior to the ground station call to the ISS. Please note that on Echolink there are automatic breaks of 1.5 seconds in the audio transmission. These occur every 2.5 minutes during the event. Breaks on IRLP are manual and occur approximately after every third question. ** Contact times are approximate. For US schools to have an ARISS contact, they must fill out a proposal, submit it to NASA, and see if they are approved or not. Once a school is approved and put on the list, an ARISS mentor will be assigned to assist the school. NASA will have two open windows a year for schools to submit a proposal. The first window for contacts during the first half of 2012 has already closed. Look for the second window for second half 2012 contacts later this year. Amateur Radio on the International Space Station (ARISS) Status Report February 13, 2012 1. Upcoming School Contact The Academy @ Shawnee has been scheduled for an Amateur Radio on the International Space Station (ARISS) contact on Tuesday, February 14 at 20:15 UTC via ON4ISS in Belgium. The contact will take place at the Challenger Learning Center in Louisville, Kentucky with the assistance of the Louisville Astronomical Society. This ARISS contact is part of a comprehensive education plan which will pique students' interest in Science, Technology, Engineering and Math. 2. Iqaluit Students Experience Successful ARISS Contact On Wednesday, February 8, an Amateur Radio on the International Space Station (ARISS) contact was held between Inuksuk High School in Iqaluit, Nunavut, Canada and on-orbit astronaut Don Pettit, KD5MDT via telebridge station AH6NM in Hawaii. Approximately 600 students and some VIPs were in attendance, including a number of dignitaries from government and private corporations, as well as the Premiere of Nunavut, who spoke a few words at the end of the contact. A talk was given on the Northern lights and the ARISS team gave a presentation on the International Space Station, Robotics and Amateur Radio. CBC North (Canadian Broadcasting Corporation) and local media reported on the event and NASA TV broadcasted the contact audio. 3. Soumuta Elementary School Students Radio ISS Students from Soumuta Elementary School in Kagoshima, Japan participated in a successful Amateur Radio on the International Space Station (ARISS) contact on Saturday, February 11. Approximately 90 students and guests gathered to listen as Dan Burbank, KC5ZSX fielded 11 questions from the youth. The contact highlighted lessons covering the Space Station and amateur radio concepts. Media representatives from three television stations, one radio station and four newspapers attended. 4. ARRL Article On Astronaut Janice Voss The American Radio Relay League (ARRL) ran an article in the February 9 ARRL Letter about astronaut ham Janice Voss, KC5BTK who passed away last week. AMSAT News Service on ARISS The February 12 AMSAT (Radio Amateur Satellite Corporation) News Service bulletin (ANS-043) included an item about the death of astronaut Janice Voss, KC5BTK, who participated in several SAREX contacts during her NASA missions. Another story talked about the upcoming ARISS contact with Perth, Australia to celebrate John Glenn's flight over Perth in a Mercury-Atlas 6 spacecraft that was launched on February 20, 1962. Please join us in listening to: An International Space Station school contact at The Academy@Shawnee, Louisville, KY on 14 Feb. The event is scheduled to begin at approximately 20:15 UTC. The contact will be a telebridge between OR4ISS and ON4ISS. The contact should be audible over portions of Europe. Interested parties are invited to listen in on the 145.80 MHz downlink. The contact is expected to be conducted in English. The Academy@Shawnee is an inner city high school of about 500 students. It has been designated as the Aerospace Magnet School for Jefferson County Public Schools in Louisville, Kentucky. Students who attend out school have the option to focus on one of three career paths in aerospace. If a student’s desire is to become a pilot, he or she can earn a private pilots license. We have the only FAA Part 141 Private Pilots Course offered in a high school in the nation. Students wishing to study engineering can enroll in Project Lead the Way, one of the nation’s premier pre-college engineering programs. This is a five course program with an aerospace focus. Students wanting to become an Aircraft Mechanic can earn 25 college hours as they work towards a FAA Airframe and Powerplant License. Last year, the students designed an experiment that flew on the Space Shuttle Endeavour. Our goal this year is to study experiments Near Space using high altitude balloons. We are speaking to you from our Challenger Learning Center. This Center is designed to provide students with an exciting simulated space mission that includes a realistic Mission Control room and an orbiting Space Station. The center is our principal outreach to middle schools. It is designed to get students interested in Science, Technology, Engineering and Math and encourages them to choose The Academy@Shawnee as their high school. Audio from this contact will be available on the: EchoLink *AMSAT* (101377) and *JK1ZRW* (277208) servers IRLP Node 9010 Discovery Reflector Audio on Echolink is generally transmitted around 20 minutes prior to the contact taking place so that you can hear some of the preparation that occurs. IRLP will begin just prior to the ground station call to the ISS. Please note that on Echolink there are automatic breaks of 1.5 seconds in the audio transmission. These occur every 2.5 minutes during the event.Breaks on IRLP are manual and occur approximately after every third question. ** Contact times are approximate. An International Space Station school contact has been planned with participants at Kochi Gakuen Kochi Junior High School, Kochi, Japan on 13 Feb. The event is scheduled to begin at approximately 10:17 UTC. The duration of the contact is approximately 9 minutes and 30 seconds. The contact will be direct between NA1SS and 8N5KOCHi. The contact should be audible over Japan. Interested parties are invited to listen in on the 145.80 MHz downlink. The contact is expected to be conducted in English. The Kochigakuen has an elementary, a junior high, a high and a junior college. Contacting members are 19 junior high school students and 4 elementary school students. They are learning about space now. Participants will ask as many of the following questions as time allows: 1. What is a popular thing among your co-workers to do in space? 2. What is one of the most surprising thing after becoming an astronaut? 3. What are stars like when you see them from your spaceship? 4. Can you see shooting stars from your space station? 5. The power which a black hole inhales is how much? 6. Have there been any big events at the space station recently? 7. What does the earth look like from outer space? 8. Is it true that the depletion of the ozone layer can affect you psychologically, such as when dream at night? 9. Is there a difference of temperature between the earth and space? 10. In Japan, we are anxious about radioactive contamination because of the tsunami damage to the nuclear power plants last ear.
