An International Space Station school contact has been planned with participants at The Academy@Shawnee, Louisville, KY on 14 Feb. The event is scheduled to begin at approximately 20:15 UTC. The duration of the contact is approximately 9 minutes and 30 seconds. The contact will be a telebridge between OR4ISS and ON4ISS. The contact should be audible over portions of Europe. Interested parties are invited to listen in on the 145.80 MHz downlink. The contact is expected to be conducted in English. The Academy@Shawnee is an inner city high school of about 500 students. It has been designated as the Aerospace Magnet School for Jefferson County Public Schools in Louisville, Kentucky. Students who attend out school have the option to focus on one of three career paths in aerospace. If a student's desire is to become a pilot, he or she can earn a private pilots license. We have the only FAA Part 141 Private Pilots Course offered in a high school in the nation. Students wishing to study engineering can enroll in Project Lead the Way, one of the nation's premier pre-college engineering programs. This is a five course program with an aerospace focus. Students wanting to become an Aircraft Mechanic can earn 25 college hours as they work towards a FAA Airframe and Powerplant License. Today, you are talking to students from our Science Club. Last year, the students designed an experiment that flew on the Space Shuttle Endeavour. Our goal this year is to study experiments Near Space using high altitude balloons. We are speaking to you from our Challenger Learning Center. This Center is designed to provide students with an exciting simulated space mission that includes a realistic Mission Control room and an orbiting Space Station. The center is our principal outreach to middle schools. It is designed to get students interested in Science, Technology, Engineering and Math and encourages them to choose The Academy@Shawnee as their high school. Participants will ask as many of the following questions as time allows: 1. Last year we sent an experiment on the Space Shuttle Endeavor. We were testing the effect of microgravity on Lactobacillus GG a bacterium that occurs naturally in the human intestinal tract and aids in digestion, especially of dairy products. Our experiment showed that microgravity had little to no effect on Lactobacillus GG during a 15 day mission. Are there any dairy products in your current diet and have you or any of your crew ever experienced digestive problems that could be contributed to them or the duration of your mission? 2. How long does it take to regain all your physical ability when you come back to earth? Does exercise on board the ISS have any impact on recovery time and does exercise seem more or less strenuous in microgravity? 3. What are some of the experiments currently on board the ISS? How does the crew interact with a typical experiment? 4. What is a typical day like on the ISS, how much control do you have over your own schedule and is there any down time? If so, how do you use this time? 5. To what extent is the ISS self sustaining or is there a constant need for re-supply from earth? What are some of the features of the ISS that might be used in the construction of spacecraft designed for long duration space flight? 6. What is the projected life expectancy for the ISS program? Is it fully functional now and how long did it take to assemble the ISS in space? 7. We know that several companies are planning to commercialize travel to low earth orbit in the near future. What role do you see these private companies playing in the future of space exploration and do you foresee tours to the ISS any time soon? 8. Can you feel the cold of space through your space suit while on spacewalks? We have been told that an astronaut once said that space has a burnt smell. Have you noticed anything like that? 9. When the ISS is occupied with a full crew, how many astronauts will be allowed out on an EVA at one time? How far from the ISS can you go? How long will a typical EVA last. What are the rescue procedures for an EVA? 10. Are the Rescue Pods used for anything other than an emergency evacuation of the ISS? How are the pods maintained and are they reusable? Why do they need to be changed out every few months? 11. Does NASA plan on putting artificial gravity on the ISS? If not, why and would there be any advantages to having gravity from a medical standpoint? 12. What do you do when you are sick? What is the level of care that can be provided on the ISS? Would it be possible to do minor surgery on the station. How does microgravity impact medical care? 13. What is the coolest thing you have seen or done on the ISS? 14. What led you to become an astronaut? What do you miss most (besides family and friends) while living on the ISS? 15. Describe your diet. With an international crew on board what country provides the meals? Does the fact that you are in space affect food texture or how it tastes? Please join us in listening to the ISS contact with participants at the *Inuksuk** High School, Iqaluit Nunavut, Canada * Contact is scheduled for Wed 2012-02-08 15:18:39 UTC The duration of the contact is approximately 9 minutes and 30 seconds. The contact will be a telebridge between NA1SS and AH6NM in Hawaii. The contact should be audible over the west coast of the U.S. Interested parties are invited to listen in on the 145.80 MHz downlink. The contact is expected to be conducted in English. The school, with its large gymnasium, is one of only a handful of public structures in the territorial capital. A number of important events have been held there, including a visit by Queen Elizabeth. The gymnasium was also the first temporary home of the Legislative Assembly of Nunavut after the territory was created in 1999. Inuksuk High School is the high school of Iqaluit, the capital of the Canadian territory of Nunavut. It offers grades 9 through 12 (ages 14-18) to a student population of about 450. The focus of the school is on teaching Inuit language and culture. Other schools in Iqaluit include a Middle school Aqsarniit Illinarvik and three elementary schools, Nakasuk School, Joamie Ilinniarvik School, the French-language Ecole de Trois-Soleils and the Inuktitut language elementary, Nanook School, in nearby Apex. Also located in the capital is Nunavut Arctic College, the only post secondary institution in the territory. An International Space Station school contact has been planned with participants at Inuksuk High School, Iqaluit Nunavut, Canada on 08 Feb. The event is scheduled to begin at approximately 15:18 UTC. The duration of the contact is approximately 9 minutes and 30 seconds. The contact will be a telebridge between NA1SS and AH6NM. The contact should be audible over the Hawaii and adjacent areas. Interested parties are invited to listen in on the 145.80 MHz downlink. The contact is expected to be conducted in English. The school, with its large gymnasium, is one of only a handful of public structures in the territorial capital. A number of important events have been held there, including a visit by Queen Elizabeth. The gymnasium was also the first temporary home of the Legislative Assembly of Nunavut after the territory was created in 1999. Inuksuk High School is the high school of Iqaluit, the capital of the Canadian territory of Nunavut. It offers grades 9 through 12 (ages 14-18) to a student population of about 450. The focus of the school is on teaching Inuit language and culture. Other schools in Iqaluit include a Middle school Aqsarniit Illinarvik and three elementary schools, Nakasuk School, Joamie Ilinniarvik School, the French-language Ecole de Trois-Soleils and the Inuktitut language elementary, Nanook School, in nearby Apex. Also located in the capital is Nunavut Arctic College, the only post secondary institution in the territory. Participants will ask as many of the following questions as time allows: 1. Amateur Radio on the International Space Station (ARISS) Status Report February 6, 2012 1. Upcoming School Contacts An Amateur Radio on the International Space Station (ARISS) contact has been scheduled for Inuksuk High School, Iqaluit, Nunavut, Canada on Wednesday, February 8 at 15:18 UTC via telebridge station AH6NM in Hawaii. The school has formed a space club through which students are learning about the ISS via videos, the internet and guest speakers. They are learning how to track the ISS and are completing space-related projects. Radio usage and protocol have been discussed. First Air and the Makivik Corporation are the sponsors that ensure ARISS contacts are supported in the remote areas of Northern Canada. Soumuta Elementary School, located in Kagoshima, Japan has been scheduled for an Amateur Radio on the International Space Station (ARISS) contact on Saturday, February 11 at 10:33 UTC. The school was established in 1972 and has a current enrollment of 479 students. Students are learning about the mission of the ISS and will experience amateur radio concepts through their contact. 2. Polish Students Experience Successful ARISS Contact On Saturday, February 4, students attending the Zespol Szkol nr 8 in Walbrzych, Poland participated in an Amateur Radio on the International Space Station (ARISS) contact with Don Pettit, KD5MDT on the ISS. Radio station W6SRJ in California provided the telebridge connection. Greetings were exchanged and students were able to get through all the space-related questions they had prepared. The contact was integrated into a curriculum covering electronics, microprocessor systems and English and drew interest from the school's robotics and amateur radio clubs. Contact audio was fed into EchoLink and IRLP (Internet Radio Linking Project). Representatives from radio and television stations provided media coverage. 3. ARISS-U.S. to Review Proposals Submitted The NASA Teaching From Space office received over 100 inquiries about the U.S. proposal process for ARISS contacts that will be scheduled during the July 2012 - January 2013 time frame. Twenty-three schools met the January 30 deadline and submitted proposals. The next step is for the U.S. Selection Committee to review the proposals and select the U.S. schools in about one month. Another window of opportunity for U.S. schools and organizations to submit proposals will open later in the year. 4. AMSAT News Service on ARISS The February 5 AMSAT (Radio Amateur Satellite Corporation) News Service bulletin (ANS-036) included an item about the successful amateur radio satellite, SuitSat, titled, "Remembering Mr. Smith - SuitSat-1 February 3, 2006." An International Space Station school contact has been planned with participants at Zespol Szkol nr 8, Walbrzych, Poland on 04 Feb. The event is scheduled to begin at approximately 12:42 UTC. The duration of the contact is approximately 9 minutes and 30 seconds. The contact will be a telebridge between NA1SS and W6SRJ. The contact should be audible over the west coast of the U.S. Interested parties are invited to listen in on the 145.80 MHz downlink. The contact is expected to be conducted in English. The Polytechnic school in Walbrzych has been established in 1946. These days it is well known as Secondary Complex School "Energetyk", where participate over 900 students. They learn in such directions as: electrician, electro-mechanics, electronics, technician graphic, technician telecommunications, technician IT, technician ITC, technician organization of advertising. The school is designed for people with disabilities, educates on a very high-level, and graduate students can easily find employment. It is the best technical school in Walbrzych. Apart from everyday teaching, school offers many other activities. The Shooting section continuously works for sixty years, and takes leading positions in "The Silver Muskets" contest. Since three years students take part in Robotics Group, where acquiring knowledge and have a lot of fun, when builds robots from scratch, according to their own ideas and knowledge. Several times they have won a place on the podium in prestigious competitions on an International scale. There is also the school band "Underland". The band is well-known in Walbrzych because they give a lot of concerts, in the city and around them. In school is active "Energol TV" and school newspaper "Alcatraz 2". At school is located amateur radio club SP6PBA, which beside communications with HAM operators from all over the World, transmitting HAM TV in 1.2 GHz band. For US schools to have an ARISS contact, they must fill out a proposal, submit it to NASA, and see if they are approved or not. Once a school is approved and put on the list, an ARISS mentor will be assigned to assist the school. NASA will have two open windows a year for schools to submit a proposal. The first window for contacts during the first half of 2012 has already closed. Look for the second window for second half 2012 contacts later this year.
