Amateur Radio on the International Space Station (ARISS) Status Report February 13, 2012 1. Upcoming School Contact The Academy @ Shawnee has been scheduled for an Amateur Radio on the International Space Station (ARISS) contact on Tuesday, February 14 at 20:15 UTC via ON4ISS in Belgium. The contact will take place at the Challenger Learning Center in Louisville, Kentucky with the assistance of the Louisville Astronomical Society. This ARISS contact is part of a comprehensive education plan which will pique students' interest in Science, Technology, Engineering and Math. 2. Iqaluit Students Experience Successful ARISS Contact On Wednesday, February 8, an Amateur Radio on the International Space Station (ARISS) contact was held between Inuksuk High School in Iqaluit, Nunavut, Canada and on-orbit astronaut Don Pettit, KD5MDT via telebridge station AH6NM in Hawaii. Approximately 600 students and some VIPs were in attendance, including a number of dignitaries from government and private corporations, as well as the Premiere of Nunavut, who spoke a few words at the end of the contact. A talk was given on the Northern lights and the ARISS team gave a presentation on the International Space Station, Robotics and Amateur Radio. CBC North (Canadian Broadcasting Corporation) and local media reported on the event and NASA TV broadcasted the contact audio. 3. Soumuta Elementary School Students Radio ISS Students from Soumuta Elementary School in Kagoshima, Japan participated in a successful Amateur Radio on the International Space Station (ARISS) contact on Saturday, February 11. Approximately 90 students and guests gathered to listen as Dan Burbank, KC5ZSX fielded 11 questions from the youth. The contact highlighted lessons covering the Space Station and amateur radio concepts. Media representatives from three television stations, one radio station and four newspapers attended. 4. ARRL Article On Astronaut Janice Voss The American Radio Relay League (ARRL) ran an article in the February 9 ARRL Letter about astronaut ham Janice Voss, KC5BTK who passed away last week. AMSAT News Service on ARISS The February 12 AMSAT (Radio Amateur Satellite Corporation) News Service bulletin (ANS-043) included an item about the death of astronaut Janice Voss, KC5BTK, who participated in several SAREX contacts during her NASA missions. Another story talked about the upcoming ARISS contact with Perth, Australia to celebrate John Glenn's flight over Perth in a Mercury-Atlas 6 spacecraft that was launched on February 20, 1962. The contact will be a telebridge between OR4ISS and ON4ISS. The contact should be audible over portions of Europe. Interested parties are invited to listen in on the 145.80 MHz downlink. The contact is expected to be conducted in English. The Academy@Shawnee is an inner city high school of about 500 students. It has been designated as the Aerospace Magnet School for Jefferson County Public Schools in Louisville, Kentucky. Students who attend out school have the option to focus on one of three career paths in aerospace. If a student’s desire is to become a pilot, he or she can earn a private pilots license. We have the only FAA Part 141 Private Pilots Course offered in a high school in the nation. Students wishing to study engineering can enroll in Project Lead the Way, one of the nation’s premier pre-college engineering programs. This is a five course program with an aerospace focus. Students wanting to become an Aircraft Mechanic can earn 25 college hours as they work towards a FAA Airframe and Powerplant License. Last year, the students designed an experiment that flew on the Space Shuttle Endeavour. Our goal this year is to study experiments Near Space using high altitude balloons. We are speaking to you from our Challenger Learning Center. This Center is designed to provide students with an exciting simulated space mission that includes a realistic Mission Control room and an orbiting Space Station. The center is our principal outreach to middle schools. It is designed to get students interested in Science, Technology, Engineering and Math and encourages them to choose The Academy@Shawnee as their high school. Audio from this contact will be available on the: EchoLink *AMSAT* (101377) and *JK1ZRW* (277208) servers IRLP Node 9010 Discovery Reflector Audio on Echolink is generally transmitted around 20 minutes prior to the contact taking place so that you can hear some of the preparation that occurs. IRLP will begin just prior to the ground station call to the ISS. Please note that on Echolink there are automatic breaks of 1.5 seconds in the audio transmission. These occur every 2.5 minutes during the event.Breaks on IRLP are manual and occur approximately after every third question. ** Contact times are approximate. The Kochigakuen has an elementary, a junior high, a high and a junior college. Contacting members are 19 junior high school students and 4 elementary school students. What is one of the most surprising thing after becoming an astronaut? 3. What are stars like when you see them from your spaceship? 4. Can you see shooting stars from your space station? 5. We were testing the effect of microgravity on Lactobacillus GG a bacterium that occurs naturally in the human intestinal tract and aids in digestion, especially of dairy products. Our experiment showed that microgravity had little to no effect on Lactobacillus GG during a 15 day mission. Are there any dairy products in your current diet and have you or any of your crew ever experienced digestive problems that could be contributed to them or the duration of your mission? 2. How long does it take to regain all your physical ability when you come back to earth? Does exercise on board the ISS have any impact on recovery time and does exercise seem more or less strenuous in microgravity? 3. What are some of the experiments currently on board the ISS? How does the crew interact with a typical experiment? 4. What is a typical day like on the ISS, how much control do you have over your own schedule and is there any down time? If so, how do you use this time? 5. To what extent is the ISS self sustaining or is there a constant need for re-supply from earth? What are some of the features of the ISS that might be used in the construction of spacecraft designed for long duration space flight? 6. What is the projected life expectancy for the ISS program? Is it fully functional now and how long did it take to assemble the ISS in space? 7. We know that several companies are planning to commercialize travel to low earth orbit in the near future. What role do you see these private companies playing in the future of space exploration and do you foresee tours to the ISS any time soon? 8. Can you feel the cold of space through your space suit while on spacewalks? We have been told that an astronaut once said that space has a burnt smell. Have you noticed anything like that? 9. When the ISS is occupied with a full crew, how many astronauts will be allowed out on an EVA at one time? How far from the ISS can you go? How long will a typical EVA last. What are the rescue procedures for an EVA? 10. Are the Rescue Pods used for anything other than an emergency evacuation of the ISS? How are the pods maintained and are they reusable? Why do they need to be changed out every few months? 11. Does NASA plan on putting artificial gravity on the ISS? If not, why and would there be any advantages to having gravity from a medical standpoint? 12. What do you do when you are sick? What is the level of care that can be provided on the ISS? Would it be possible to do minor surgery on the station. How does microgravity impact medical care? 13. What is the coolest thing you have seen or done on the ISS? 14. What led you to become an astronaut? What do you miss most (besides family and friends) while living on the ISS? 15. Describe your diet. With an international crew on board what country provides the meals? Does the fact that you are in space affect food texture or how it tastes? Upcoming ARISS contact with Soumuta Elementary School, Kagoshima, Japan

An International Space Station school contact has been planned with participants at Soumuta Elementary School, Kagoshima, Japan on 11 Feb. The event is scheduled to begin at approximately 10:33 UTC. The duration of the contact is approximately 9 minutes and 30 seconds. The contact will be direct between NA1SS and 8J6SMT. The contact should be audible in Japan and adjacent areas. Interested parties are invited to listen in on the 145.80 MHz downlink. The contact is expected to be conducted in English. Somuta Elementary School is located near the Sakurajima volcano (31.5943N 130.6580E). Recently Sakurajima is erupting and smoking. Therefore, we make some questions about Sakurajima. Participants will ask as many of the following questions as time allows: 1. In Kagoshima we have a volcano called Sakurajima, can you see its eruption from ISS? 2. What is the most beautiful thing that you have seen so far? 3. What kind of space foods do you have? 4. What do you do when you get a fever or feel sick? 5. What do you do, if a machine isn't working? 6. What are you investigating now in ISS? 7. What is an inconvenient and a convenient thing when you live in the weightless world? 8. Is there the change in temperature from season to season in space? 9. Have you ever seen an Alien or UFO? 10. What do you do if you run out of food? 11. Do you get dizzy when you spin around in ISS? 12. What was the hardest part of the training for the crew? 13. Do you feel the weight when you wear the space suit in ISS? 14. What position are you in when you eat a meal in space? 15. What happens when you drink carbonated water in space? 16. Do you have a thing such as motion sickness when you go to space? 17. Do tears flow in space? 18. What are you the most careful about in space? 19. How do you brush your teeth in ISS? 20. How do you carry space food into ISS? 21. What change will happen to my body if I go to space? 22. What kind of equipments are there in ISS? 23. How does space food taste? 24. How many hours do your work in a day in ISS? 25.
