US Hams, don’t forget that there is a new process for US school proposals.
For US schools to have an ARISS contact, they must fill out a proposal,
submit it to NASA, and see if they are approved or not. Once a school is
approved and put on the list, an ARISS mentor will be assigned to assist the
school.
NASA will have two open windows a year for schools to submit a proposal.
The first window for contacts during the first half of 2012 has already
closed. Look for the second window for second half 2012 contacts later this
year. You must go through NASA to get the proposal material. Contact
Teaching From Space, a NASA Education office, at JSC-TFS-ARISS(a)mail.nasa.gov or
by calling them at (281) 244-2320.
The following US states and entities have never had an ARISS contact:
Arkansas, Connecticut, Delaware, Kansas, Minnesota, North Dakota, Rhode Island,
South Dakota, Vermont, West Virginia, Wyoming, American Samoa, Guam,
Northern Marianas Islands, and the Virgin Islands.

Amateur Radio on the International Space Station (ARISS) Status Report
March 5, 2012
1. Upcoming School Contacts
Dilworth Elementary School in San Jose, California has been scheduled for an Amateur Radio on the International Space Station (ARISS) contact on Monday, March 5 at 18:33 UTC. The ARISS contact is part of a comprehensive education plan which will pique students' interest in Science Technology, Engineering and Math (STEM).
An Amateur Radio on the International Space Station (ARISS) contact has been scheduled for ESA ESTEC in Noordwijk, Netherlands on Tuesday, March 6 at 13:11 UTC via station ON4ISS in Belgium. The radio activity will be part of an educational program around André Kuipers' mission Spaceship Earth which targets children who are 10-14 years of age. Part of this program consists of mission assignments Kuipers gives to Dutch schoolchildren. The winners of each challenge will be invited to the radio contact. Other activities include lessons and experiments.
2. ESA Awards ARISS Contact to Winners of Competition
Students from three schools, the American School of the Hague, the International School of Amsterdam and the British School in the Netherlands, took part in an Amateur Radio on the International Space Station (ARISS) contact on Monday, February 27 via station IK1SLD in Italy. This ARISS contact with astronaut André Kuipers was offered as a prize by the European Space Agency (ESA) to those schools who submitted the best suggestions for experiments or demonstrations that could be performed in microgravity on board the ISS using common everyday items. The youth were given lessons on radio signals and communications which involved local radio ham experts.
3. Atlanta, Georgia Youth Radio ISS Astronaut
On Friday, March 2, an Amateur Radio on the International Space Station (ARISS) contact was held between astronaut Don Pettit, KD5MDT on the ISS and Parkside Elementary School in Atlanta, Georgia. The radio link was provided by station K6DUE in Greenbelt, Maryland. Questions were asked concerning the education and training needed to become an astronaut and about how space affects one's appetite and sleep. The contact was part of a comprehensive education plan using NASA related activities to pique students' interest in Science, Technology, Engineering and Math (STEM). Audio was carried live on the NASA TV hour. East Atlanta Patch posted an article on the contact. http://eastatlanta.patch.com/articles/parkside-elementary-to-international-…
4. Pettit Chats with Greek Students via ARISS
Students attending the 5th Geniko Lykeio Katerinis in Katerini, Greece experienced a successful Amateur Radio on the International Space Station (ARISS) contact on Friday, March 2. The youth spoke with Don Pettit about the experiments onboard the ISS and asked how he communicates with his family during his mission. The contact complemented lessons covering astronomy and amateur radio with special attention given to the ISS regarding its role in humanity and science, its orbit and the every day life of the astronaut. ISS courses were based on ESA's education tool "ISS Education Kit." Five hundred were in attendance and another hundred connected to the internet to view the streaming video. Media coverage included two television stations.
5. Amateur Radio Newsline Covers ARISS
On March 2, Amateur Radio Newsline report #1803 carried an article about the recent ARISS contact held during the John Glenn Event in Perth, Australia. The event celebrated the 50th anniversary of John Glenn's orbit of the Earth, when the population of Perth turned on its lights and Glenn observed the city was visible from space, leading to Perth's nickname, "City of Lights." To view, "Ham Radio in Space: Amateur Radio Celebrates John Glenn over Perth Australia," see: http://www.arnewsline.org/storage/scripts/nsln1803.txt
An International Space Station school contact has been planned with participants at ESA-ESTEC, Noordwijk, Netherlands on 06 Mar. The event is scheduled to begin at approximately 13:11 UTC. The duration of the contact is approximately 9 minutes and 30 seconds. The contact will be a telebridge between OR4ISS and ON4ISS. The contact should be audible over Belgium and adjacent areas. Interested parties are invited to listen in on the 145.80 MHz downlink. The contact is expected to be conducted in Dutch.
The questions are asked by children who won the Ruimteschip Aarde (Spaceship Earth) competition. In this competition André Kuipers challenged them to turn their class room into a spaceship and to think very good about what they and their class mates needed to survive in space for a very long time. They showed their results in videos. In some of the questions the children refer to inventions they made for this competition, such as the Poep Brandstof Generator (Poop fuel generator, Q4) and the Geur Vergeet Geheugen Machine (a machine that makes it possible to smell forgotten scents from earth, Q6)
Participants will ask as many of the following questions (translated) as time allows:
Hello Andre, this is Jasper Wamsteker of the Netherlands Space Office and the Ruimteschip Aarde project. I am here together with the proud winners of the first special mission of Ruimteschip Aarde. I see a lot of delighted and excited faces around me. The children here have a lot of questions for you, but first I have a question myself.
1. We can hear you, but we cannot see you. Please could you describe to us
where you are at the moment?
2. Will it ever be possible that children go on a long space trip? Or would
this be too dangerous for the growth and the strength of their bones
and organs?
3. If you eat salt in space, does it affect your bone density?
4. For the competition we designed a PBG (Poop Fuel Generator). Poop is
converted into fuel and thus used for relocation in space by the
principle of action=reaction. Do you think the PBG can ever be made and
used by astronauts on a space mission that takes several years?
5. How long can you survive in space in case no new provisions are brought?
6. For the competition we came up with the idea of the GVGM (Forgotten
Scents Remembrance Machine). This helps you to smell and remember
smells from earth. Which 3 scents would you like the GVGM to be able to
reproduce?
7. You do a lot of experiments in the ISS. Which one has your preference?
8. Did you ever come up with an idea for an experiment yourself, that you
would like to conduct in space?
9. What do you do in case the oxygen falls out?
10. Now that you are in space, do you read a science fiction novel there, or
is that not necessary anymore?
11. Is there an experiment that you would like to conduct, but which you
cannot do because of lack of time?
12. Is there a game that you and your fellow astronauts play together in your
free time?
13. When you were launched, did you feel the high speed of the rocket?
14. Can you imagine what it would be like to be so far away that it is not
possible anymore to see earth?
15. You travel to the ISS in a very small capsule. How can you take all your
clothes with you?
16. Is there a device which can be used in the ISS that you would like to be
made?
17. What effects on your body do you experience now that you are in space?
18. Would you like to live in space forever together with your friends and
family?
19. Do you ever have stomach ache as a result of lack of gravity?

Next planned event(s):
TBD
ARISS is an international educational outreach program partnering the participating space agencies, NASA, Russian Space Agency, ESA, CNES, JAXA, and CSA, with the AMSAT and IARU organizations from participating countries.
ARISS offers an opportunity for students to experience the excitement of Amateur Radio by talking directly with crewmembers on-board the International Space Station. Teachers, parents and communities see, first hand, how Amateur Radio and crewmembers on ISS can energize youngsters' interest in science, technology, and learning. Further information on the ARISS program is available on the website http://www.ariss.org/ (graciously hosted by the Radio Amateurs of Canada).

In concert with academic focus, student's overall social and emotional needs are supported through classroom, school activities, and support services.
Participants will ask as many of the following questions as time allows:
1. Is traveling on a shuttle in space different than traveling in an
airplane on Earth?
2. Is it difficult to write in space? If so, why?
3. When you leave the Earth's atmosphere, what happens to you physically?
4. How many years of training do you have to go through before you can
actually go to space?
5. Can you tell when it's day or night while in space?

10. How many missions does the average astronauts go on?
11. How do you know if you have enough oxygen if you are constantly using it?
12. Does anything happen to spaceships when entering an atmosphere? If so,
why does it happen?
13. Can there be a fire on the space station and if so, how would you put it
out?
14. What do astronauts do for entertainment in space?
15. How do you eat in space?
16. Why do astronauts wear white spacesuits?
17. Are there health concerns if you are in space for too long?
18. While in space, what food do you miss the most?

There have been rumors in the past indicating that the ISS was having
direct contacts on the 40 meter band. There is no HF radio equipment on
board
and available yet. The HF antenna is mounted. Sometimes WA3NAN will
