An International Space Station school contact has been planned with participants at St Mary's Catholic Primary School, Hay, NSW, Australia on 01 June. The event is scheduled to begin at approximately 10:44 UTC. The duration of the contact is approximately 9 minutes and 30 seconds. The contact will be a telebridge between NA1SS and VK6MJ. The contact should be audible over portions of Australia. Interested parties are invited to listen in on the 145.80 MHz downlink. The contact is expected to be conducted in English. St Mary's Catholic Primary School in Hay, NSW has offered a sound academic education in the Catholic Tradition since it was established in 1883 by the Presentation Sisters. We are part of the Catholic Education System of the Diocese of Wilcannia-Forbes and in 2004 have an enrolment of 102 students from Kindergarten to Year 6 in six small classes ranging from 13 to 21 students per class, ensuring close individual attention for each student. As a school community we work together to provide a safe, happy and welcoming school environment for students, staff and parents. Participants will ask as many of the following questions as time allows: 1. When you sleep, do you have to float? 2. Do you have to be careful of crashing into asteroids? 3. Do you get to go outside the Space Station, is it scary? 11. Why did you want to go into space? 12. Do the constellations such as the Southern Cross look the same in space as they do on earth? 13. Has there ever been an emergency on the ISS and what happens if there is one? 14. What is the most dangerous or risky thing that has happened to you? An International Space Station school contact has been planned with participants at St Mary’s Catholic Primary School, Hay, NSW, Australia, Friday June 1st. AOS is approximately 10:44 UTC. The duration of the contact is approximately 9 minutes and 30 seconds. The contact will be a telebridge between NA1SS and VK6MJ. The contact should be audible over western Australia. Interested parties are invited to listen in on the 145.80 MHz downlink. The contact is expected to be conducted in English. Audio from this contact will be fed into the: IRLP Node 9010 Discovery Reflector by the N9XH Ground Station If conditions are favoarble we will relay audio to EchoLink *AMSAT* (101377) and *JK1ZRW* (277208) servers Streaming Audio at: https://sites.google.com/site/arissaudio/ Audio on Echolink & web stream is generally transmitted around 20 minutes prior to the contact taking place so that you can hear some of the preparation that occurs. IRLP will begin just prior to the ground station call to the ISS. Please note that on Echolink there are automatic breaks of 1.5 seconds in the audio transmission. These occur every 2.5 minutes during the event.Breaks on IRLP are manual and occur approximately after every third question. ** Contact times are approximate. Amateur Radio on the International Space Station (ARISS) Status Report May 29, 2012 1. Upcoming School Contact An Amateur Radio on the International Space Station (ARISS) contact has been scheduled for St. Mary's Catholic Primary School in Hay, NSW, Australia on Friday, June 1 at 10:44 UTC via Australian telebridge station VK6MJ. Students are learning about space and are involved in creative writing projects using the "My Life as an Astronaut" theme. Older students are working on informational reports focused on life in space and the occupation of astronauts. 2. Northland Preparatory Academy Calls ISS On Thursday, May 24, students from Northland Preparatory Academy in Flagstaff, Arizona participated in an Amateur Radio on the International Space Station (ARISS) contact with Joe Acaba, KE5DAR on the ISS. Approximately 550 students, staff and administrators, as well as Dr. Jeffrey Hall, director of the Lowell Observatory, and the mayor were in attendance. The contact complemented a Science, Technology, Engineering and Math (STEM) curriculum. Video of the event, including Dr. Hall's presentation, has been posted on-line. AMSAT News Service on ARISS The AMSAT (Radio Amateur Satellite Corporation) News Service bulletin (ANS-148) posted on May 27 has an article titled, "ARISS Call For Volunteers." It talks about the Dayton presentations given by Mark Hammond, N8MH on ARISS mentor and ARISS ground station opportunities and provides the ARRL Web site link (http://www.arrl.org/ariss-volunteers) which details those opportunities. An International Space Station school contact has been planned with participants at Northland Preparatory Academy, Flagstaff, AZ on 24 May. The event is scheduled to begin at approximately 17:00 UTC. The duration of the contact is approximately 9 minutes and 30 seconds. The contact will be direct between NA1SS and KF7RCV. The contact should be audible over western portions of the U.S. Interested parties are invited to listen in on the 145.80 MHz downlink. The contact is expected to be conducted in English. Northland Preparatory Academy is a public charter school located in Flagstaff, Arizona currently serving 559 students in grades 6-12. Founded in 1996 by a group of parents determined to provide a rigorous education for their children, NPA is a thriving learning community and has already established an excellent track record of preparing students for college success. NPA does not have selective entrance requirements; its students gain admission through a lottery which determines a waiting list for available spots. NPA is fully accredited by the North Central Association/AdvancEd. Participants will ask as many of the following questions as time allows: 1. How can you tell when to go to sleep in space? 2. Do solar flares affect your life in space? 3. Why do you do experiments in space when we do not live in space? 4. What goes through your head when you think you are spending the next 6 months away from home? 5. Do you still catch colds and the flu in space? 6. Do you conserve resources such as water, electricity, etc. since you only have a limited amount? 7. How do you swallow water without gravity to bring it down your throat? 8. What are some of your daily activities on the ISS? 9. What was the toughest obstacle that you had to get around to be where you are now? 10. Between launch and re-entry which one scares you the most and why? 11. How has being in space changed your perspective of Earth and life on Earth? 12. What differences are you finding between plants grown in space and here on Earth? 13. Do you ever get claustrophobic while living on the ISS? 14. Besides family and loved ones, what do you miss the most from Earth? 15. Did you get to bring any photos or persona items to the ISS? 16. Do you ever get sick from floating around? 17. How do you avoid hitting an object floating around the Earth? 18. How long did it take you to learn all the cool buttons and gadgets in the ISS? 19. How hard is it to adjust to the schedule on the space station? 20. When you are sleeping in space do you ever get "that sensation of falling" that you can sometimes experience here on earth? 21. Upcoming School Contact Northland Preparatory Academy in Flagstaff, Arizona has been scheduled for an Amateur Radio on the International Space Station (ARISS) contact on Thursday, May 24 at 17:00 UTC. The contact is part of a comprehensive education plan which will pique students' interest in Science, Technology, Engineering and Math (STEM). 2. ARISS International Team Meeting Held The ARISS International Team monthly meeting was held on May 15. Discussions included a status of the Ham TV project. Astronaut Training Status Chris Hadfield, KC5RNJ/VA3OOG and Thomas Marshburn, KE5HOC, both slated to fly with Expedition 34, acquired their preflight training during a session on May 14. Alexander Gerst, KF5ONO (Expedition 40) took his introductory/ basic operations class on May 9. Kevin Ford, KF5GPP is scheduled for a preflight session on May 22. Amateur Radio on the International Space Station (ARISS) Status Report May 14, 2012 1. Farnsworth Contact Successful An Amateur Radio on the International Space Station (ARISS) contact was held between youth at Farnsworth Aerospace PK-8 Magnet School in St. Paul, Minnesota and on-orbit astronaut Don Pettit, KD5MDT on Monday, May 7. Approximately 100 students as well as some school board members and local dignitaries attended the event. The contact was simulcast throughout the school for those classes not present. It was held to complement students' studies in Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics (STEM). Additionally, local hams assisting with the contact increased their club membership from 30 to 50 members since agreeing to support the contact. An International Space Station school contact has been planned with participants at Maani Ulujuk Ilinniarvik (MUI), Rankin Inlet, Nunavut, Canada on 14 May. The event is scheduled to begin at approximately 14:40 UTC. The duration of the contact is approximately 9 minutes and 30 seconds. The contact will be a telebridge between NA1SS and W6SRJ. The contact should be audible over the west coast of the U.S. Interested parties are invited to listen in on the 145.80 MHz downlink. The contact is expected to be conducted in English. Maani Ulujuk Ilinniarvik (MUI), named after an Elder who at the time was one of the oldest Elders in the community, is a grade 7 - 12 school in a community of three schools. Simon Alaittuq (Grades 5 - 6) and Leo Ussak Elementary (Grades K - 4) are the other schools in the community who make up the Rankin School system. Our school currently has a population of 333 students. Enrolment fluctuates from semester to semester dependent of movement of families into the community for work and education since Rankin Inlet is a regional center for education, government services and transportation. There are 35 staff members in the school and the school takes pride in its ability to offer a balanced educational program leading to graduation. Each year students at MUI are required to develop and submit a science fair project which is entered into the MUI Science Fair. Students who place in the top three at the school level science fair get an opportunity to represent the school at the Kivalliq Regional Science Fair, which has been hosted by MUI three times in the past 8 years. During those 8 years we have been represented at National Science fairs at least 6 times. As well, we have a vibrant technology program which provides staff and students access to many online and in-house resources. Students can graduate with a compliment of technology courses which prepares them well for post-secondary and/or the world of work. The school has a strong cultural program featuring traditional tool making, traditional sewing and other equipment needed for hunting and fishing. Inuit have a long traditional of living of the land and students are fortunate at MUI that we still have Elders and cultural experts who are available and willing to come into the school to teach traditional skills. The schools shop and home economics programs are steeped in traditional activities and classes from grades 7 - 12 integrate traditional activities into the curriculum. We are very excited about linking up to the space station and giving our school and community an opportunity to be part of this great program. Maani Ulujuk prides itself on being innovative and having high expectations for students and staff. We look forward to the opportunity to provide our students with this great learning experience. Amateur Radio on the International Space Station (ARISS) Status Report May 7, 2012 1. Upcoming School Contact An Amateur Radio on the International Space Station (ARISS) contact has been scheduled for Farnsworth Aerospace PK-8 Magnet School in St. Paul, Minnesota on Monday, May 7 at 16:14 UTC. The ARISS contact will complement a curriculum which will pique students' interest in Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics (STEM). 2. ARISS - Virginia Contact Successful On Wednesday, May 2, the Mariners' Museum in Newport News, Virginia experienced a successful Amateur Radio on the International Space Station (ARISS) contact with Don Pettit, KD5MDT via telebridge station IK1SLD in Italy. Groups in Virginia, Louisiana, New York, and Michigan were video conferenced together for the event. Approximately 350 students at the four locations got in seventeen questions before ISS went over the horizon. The contact highlighted a comprehensive Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics (STEM) education plan. 3. AMSAT News Service on ARISS The AMSAT (Radio Amateur Satellite Corporation) News Service bulletin (ANS-127) posted on May 6 included information about the upcoming AMSAT Forum at Dayton Hamvention. Mark Hammond, N8MH will give a presentation on education activities with which AMSAT is involved and Gould Smith, WA4SXM will give a talk on "ARISSat-1 Operation in Space." An International Space Station school contact has been planned with participants at Farnsworth Aerospace PK-8 Magnet School, St. Paul, MN on 07 May. The contact should be audible over the middle U.S. and adjacent areas. Interested parties are invited to listen in on the 145.80 MHz downlink. The contact is expected to be conducted in English. Farnsworth Aerospace is a PK-8 public school located in St. Paul, Minnesota; the home of NASA astronauts Digger Carey and Heidi Stefanyshyn-Piper. Farnsworth has over 1250 students, involved families, and outstanding community, education and business partners. Aerospace is integrated not only in the STEM subjects, but also art, music, history, writing - all areas of the curriculum. In 2004, Farnsworth was named a NASA Explorer School. We are very excited and honored to be part of the ARISS program. Our ARISS student team includes 6th, 7th and 8th graders. This team will lead our entire school and community effort to make our ARISS link up an "out of this world" event! Plans for the team include meeting with our outstanding local HAM operator team, writing event press releases, working with technology department for broadcasting and taping the event to share during a Family Night. The team will also research and create teacher and student materials for PK-3 and 4-6 grade classrooms. They will become the team asking questions to the astronaut and speaking to any media. Do astronauts have trouble getting to sleep in outer space and when you do sleep; is it different from sleeping on Earth? 5. Do cancer cells stop growing in outer space? 6. Are you able to eat any fresh food in space or is it all dried? 7. How often do astronauts on the ISS able to go on space walks? 8. How often and for how long do astronauts on the ISS exercise in order to stay healthy? 9. Does your skin and hair grow faster in outer space? 10. How often do you change clothes and how do you clean your clothes in space? 11. If you can get the Internet while on the ISS, what websites do you visit the most and do you have any problems getting online? 12. How do you deal with the different stresses while you're in space? 13. What is your daily routine like? 14. When you go to the ISS what is the most challenging thing you have to adapt to? 15. Is there anything in space that scares you? 16. When you return to Earth how do you feel and what's the first thing you want to do? 17. Which is harder on a person's body, blasting off Earth to reach the ISS or returning to Earth? 18. How much radiation do you receive in a day? How does this compare to what you might receive on Earth? 19. In movies, when astronauts blast off from Earth the skin around their mouths wobbles due to the amount of g's. Does this really happen? For US schools to have an ARISS contact, they must fill out a proposal, submit it to NASA, and see if they are approved or not. An International Space Station school contact has been planned with participants at The Mariner's Museum, Newport News, VA on 02 May. The event is scheduled to begin at approximately 16:14 UTC. The duration of the contact is approximately 9 minutes and 30 seconds. The contact will be a telebridge between OR4ISS and IK1SLD. The contact should be audible over Italy and adjacent areas. Interested parties are invited to listen in on the 145.80 MHz downlink. The contact is expected to be conducted in English. The Mariners' Museum is a non-profit museum with a mission to "educate, engage, and inspire people around the globe to embrace the rich and diverse maritime world." We do this through exhibitions and programming including lectures, in-house and outreach school classes, and educational programs presented via Interactive videoconferencing. We are thrilled to connect with the International Space Station as this connection continues the story of exploration, carrying it from the sea to the stars. Our goal is for students across the country to see that the exploration of mankind is ongoing, and can be part of their story as well. Participants will ask as many of the following questions as time allows: 1. What is the most important piece of technology at the space station? 2. Do you get homesick? 3. The early explorers explored to find quicker routes to Asia, what are scientists hoping to find? 4. When was the last time explorers found something new? 5. How do the astronauts continue to have a constant flow of oxygen? 6. How do you find your way- (thinking the use of an astrolabe vs. what you use)? 7. Where are you located? What can you see from there? 8. How do you know where things like stars and planets are without the help of satellites? 9. Why is it so important to explore space? 10. How does the journey compare to that of the original explorers? In terms of travel time, distance, and conditions? 11. How many days do you stay there (in space)? 12. How will space look different in the 22nd century? 13. Have you found a world besides Earth that we can breathe on? 14. How do the astronauts get on and off the International Space Station? 15. What does it feel like to be in space? 16. How long does it take to get there from Earth? 17. How far have you explored space? 18. Where is the closest Galaxy? 19. Are you looking for other life forms in space? 20. How long till we have mastered space travel to the point that it will be open to the general public? 21. How many other galaxies are out there? 22. Are you going to send people to Mars? 23. Do you think that humans will ever make something that can fly into the sun? 24. What is the most interesting planet you have explored and why? 25. What is your favorite thing about space? 26. If it is extremely dangerous to explore space, why would you do it? 27. Is it possible to land a space shuttle on Mars with people in it?
