Amateur Radio on the International Space Station (ARISS) Status Report July 30, 2012 1. Upcoming School Contact Space Jam 6, which will be held at the Octave Chanute Aerospace Museum in Rantoul, Illinois, has been scheduled for an Amateur Radio on the International Space Station (ARISS) contact on Sunday, August 5 at 10:06 UTC. The Space Jamboree Workshop is the Midwest's largest technology oriented gathering of Boy Scouts and Girl Scouts. The theme this year is "The History of Aviation." Subjects that will be taught and merit badges that may be earned include the following: Space Exploration, Radio, Aviation, Electronics, Robotics, Soil/Water Conservation, Environmental Science, Energy, Metalwork, Computers, Geology, Nuclear Science, Engineering and Inventing. The Jamboree is working with the University of Illinois, Purdue, and DePauw Universities (high altitude balloon launches, FIRST Robotics, Nuclear Engineering) to help Scouts plan for the future. 2. Girls from WE@RIT Camp Speak with Sunita Williams in Space Fifth and sixth grade girls attending the "Everyday Engineering" camp at Kate Gleason College, sponsored by the Women in Engineering @ Rochester Institute of Technology (WE@RIT) in New York took part in an Amateur Radio on the International Space Station (ARISS) contact on Monday, July 23. The girls talked with on-orbit astronaut Sunita Williams, KD5PLB who currently holds the record for longest space flight by a woman. The contact highlighted camp activities that focus on engineering-based themes to teach the engineering design process through hands-on build and design activities. This year's camp theme is "World in Motion." Also attending the contact were students from the grade 7-9 camp (held two weeks ago), the students attending this week's RoboCamp, and the Lil' Kids on Campus Space Week kids. Virginia Air and Space Center Contact Successful On Thursday, July 26, Sunita Williams, KD5PLB held an Amateur Radio on the International Space Station (ARISS) contact with youth volunteers from the Virginia Air and Space Center in Hampton, Virginia. The volunteers give tours, provide demonstrations to the public and support the center in its efforts to educate the public. The center has its own amateur radio exhibit and during these summer months, it also welcomes NASA exhibits Destination Station, the Orion Test Vehicle and the Mars Science Laboratory. 4. AMSAT News Service on ARISS The July 29 AMSAT (Radio Amateur Satellite Corporation) News Service bulletin (ANS-211) announced the return of Frank Bauer to the position of VP-Human Spaceflight. Bauer will resume this position on August 1. Also given in the report was a status on the new Ericsson that will replace the old VHF radio in the Columbus Module. Amateur Radio on the International Space Station (ARISS) Status Report July 23, 2012 1. Upcoming School Contacts An Amateur Radio on the International Space Station (ARISS) contact is planned for the Women in Engineering @ Rochester Institute of Technology (WE@RIT) in Rochester, New York on Monday, July 23 (13:27 UTC) as it hosts its pre-engineering summer camps. This year's camp theme is "World in Motion." The main camp activities revolve around engineering-based themes to teach the engineering design process and to have participants understand engineering projects and concepts through hands-on build and design activities. A mix of RIT engineering laboratory experiences, team building activities, project management, logical thinking, and problem solving will be incorporated. The summer camp services girls entering grades 5-9. An Amateur Radio on the International Space Station (ARISS) contact has been tentatively scheduled for the Virginia Air and Space Center located in Hampton, Virginia on Thursday, July 26 at 14:05 UTC. The contact is part of a comprehensive education plan which will pique students' interest in Science, Technology, Engineering and Math (STEM). 2. ESA Space Camp Radios Joe Acaba On Space Station On Sunday, July 22, ESA Space Camp, held at St. Columba's College, Dublin, Ireland, took part in an Amateur Radio on the International Space Station (ARISS) contact via telebridge station W6SRJ in California. Joe Acaba, KE5DAR on the ISS participated in the Q&A session, answering the youths' 21 questions. The event drew an audience of over 160. The space camp was attended by children of ESA employees who learned about space through guest speakers, hands-on activities and field trips. 3. ARISS International Team Teleconference Held The monthly ARISS International Team meeting was held on Tuesday, July 17. Discussion topics included the ARISS paperwork filed with the ITU and an update on ARISS radio equipment in the Columbus Module. An International Space Station school contact has been planned with participants at Women in Engineering @ Rochester Institute of Technology, Rochester, NY on 23 July. The event is scheduled to begin at approximately 13:27 UTC. The duration of the contact is approximately 9 minutes and 30 seconds. The contact will be direct between NA1SS and W2RIT. The contact should be audible over portions of the east coast of the U.S. Interested parties are invited to listen in on the 145.80 MHz downlink. The contact is expected to be conducted in English. The Women in Engineering Program at Rochester Institute of Technology (WE@RIT) is dedicated to increasing the representation of women engineers and women leaders within the engineering profession. Founded in 2003, WE@RIT strives towards achieving gender parity within the Kate Gleason College of Engineering and hosts a comprehensive series of pre-engineering outreach, recruitment, and community building programs in support of this vision. Participants will ask as many of the following questions as time allows: 1. How long did it take to build the ISS? 2. How much preparation and training is required to be ready to spend time on the ISS? 3. What tools do the crew members on the ISS use to gather information? 4. a. What kind of research are you doing on the ISS? b. How does weightlessness affect your research? 5. How do your pillows stay in place in space, or do you have things that keep them from floating away? 6. How do you keep your food from floating away when you're eating? 7. An International Space Station school contact has been planned with participants at ESA Space Camp, Dublin, Ireland on 22 July. The event is scheduled to begin at approximately 17:25 UTC. The duration of the contact is approximately 9 minutes and 30 seconds. The contact will be a telebridge between NA1SS and W6SRJ. The contact should be audible over the west coast of the U.S. Interested parties are invited to listen in on the 145.80 MHz downlink. The contact is expected to be conducted in English. The European Space Agency has locations in several European countries. The annual summer space camp is an occasion when the children of staff employed at ESA get a chance to mix with each other in an environment which allows them to be immersed in space activities and cultural events. This year the 160 ESA campers will land in a traditional "Harry Potter" style boarding school near Dublin, in a country full of mystical stories and a breath taking landscape, on 14 July 2012. St Colombas College offers the amenities where children will learn about Space Ship Earth in more detail, with emphasis on hands on activities and having fun whilst learning. As part of their 2 week stay at the camp, the children aged 8-17 years, will take part in sporting events, field trips where they will explore more about what earth is made of, look more closely at how we explore other planets and design their own launchers and space suits. They will be visited by an ESA astronaut who will join in the activities and explain about astronaut training and human spaceflight. Participants will ask as many of the following questions as time allows: 1. How long did you take from take off until you reach the ISS? 2. How do astronauts manage to float in the station? 3. What happens if there is a hole in the space station? 4. What are the best and worst parts of weightlessness? 5. How is it like the first time without gravity? 6. What are the consequences of a long term space flight for the human body? 7. Since there is no gravity in space do you launch yourself when you sneeze? 8. What happens when you need a surgery in space? 9. Have you been afraid when in space? 10. Do you have a chance to follow the London Olympics from the ISS? 11. What do you do in your free time in space? 12. Do you believe in aliens or life out there? 13. What kind of petrol/energy is used in launchers, in satellites and in the station and what drives the choice? 14. Do you get to wear your own clothes or are you given special clothes? 15. Which is the most amazing spatial event that you've ever experienced? 16. How long can you survive with the food on board of the ISS and do you like the food? 17. When did you become interested in space? 18. After being in space so long and seeing earth from so far away, so you still see mankind in the same way? 19. Where do you sleep better: ISS or home. 20. ARISS Contact SUNDAY 22 JULY

Please join us in listening to the ISS contact with participants at the ESA Space Camp, being held at St. Columba’s College, Whitechurch, Dublin, Ireland AOS is approximately 17:25 UTC SUNDAY 22 July and is a telebridge via W6SRJ in Santa Rosa, California The duration of the contact is approximately 9 minutes and 30 seconds. The contact should be audible over the West / Midwest United States. Interested parties are invited to listen in on the 145.80 MHz downlink. The contact is expected to be conducted in English. The ARISS contact is part of an educational program of which some activities are based around André Kuipers’ mission, Spaceship Earth. Children at the camp will have 2 weeks of space education covering the themes of Climate, Biodiversity and the Human Body as well as Earth Observation and the Solar System. The children will also receive lessons about how to communicate with the crew on the ISS from a ham radio expert. Audio from this contact will be fed into the: IRLP Node 9010 Discovery Reflector EchoLink *AMSAT* (101377) and *JK1ZRW* (277208) servers Streaming Audio at: https://sites.google.com/site/arissaudio/ Audio on Echolink & web stream is generally transmitted around 20 minutes prior to the contact taking place so that you can hear some of the preparation that occurs. IRLP will begin just prior to the ground station call to the ISS. Please note that on Echolink there are automatic breaks of 1.5 seconds in the audio transmission. These occur every 2.5 minutes during the event. Breaks on IRLP are manual and occur approximately after every third question. ** Contact times are approximate. Amateur Radio on the International Space Station (ARISS) Status Report July 16, 2012 1. Upcoming School Contact ESA Space Camp, which is being held at St. Columbas College, Whitechurch, Dublin, Ireland, has been scheduled for an Amateur Radio on the International Space Station (ARISS) contact on Sunday, July 22 at 17:25 UTC via telebridge station W6SRJ in California. The ARISS contact is part of an educational program of which some activities are based around André Kuipers mission, Spaceship Earth. Children at the camp will have 2 weeks of space education covering the themes of Climate, Biodiversity and the Human Body as well as Earth Observation and the Solar System. The children will also receive lessons about how to communicate with the crew on the ISS from a ham radio expert. 2. ARISS Contact with Women in STEM An Amateur Radio on the International Space Station (ARISS) contact was held with Women in STEM High School Aerospace Scholars in Houston, Texas on Tuesday, July 10 via telebridge station W6SRJ in California. The high school girls came from across the U.S. to participate in the program which provided them the opportunity to plan a space exploration mission and to learn from women that work at NASA. ARISS Exhibit at Moon Day 2012 Moon Day 2012 will be held at the Frontiers of Flight Museum at Love Field in Dallas, Texas on July 21 to commemorate Neil Armstrongs walk on the moon on July 21, 1969. The event will feature space exhibits, demonstrations and other space activities. Expedition 30/31Crew Scheduled for Debrief Astronauts Don Pettit and André Kuipers (Expedition 30/31) will take part in a debrief session to give feedback on the ARISS program. AMSAT News Service on ARISS On July 15, AMSAT (Radio Amateur Satellite Corporation) posted an article in its News Service bulletin (ANS-197) on the Soyuz TMA-05M crew that was launched on July 15 and is headed toward the Space Station. Author Norm Fusaro (W3IZ) reported about one particular trucker, "Of the thousands of contacts he has made from his truck John recalls making a packet connection to the International Space Station as one of his most memorable contacts. John said he made this contact at a rest stop." A short article in the "Up Front" column covered ARISS team member Farrell Winder, W8ZCF, and Jeff Winder, KB8VCO, who described how they and two other hams worldwide managed to make a 70 cm SSTV contact via ARISSat-1 late last year. Farrell said it was "a lot of hard earned fun, challenge and education." Farrell was on the ARISS team.

Amateur Radio on the International Space Station (ARISS) Status Report July 9, 2012 1. Upcoming School Contacts An Amateur Radio on the International Space Station (ARISS) contact has been slated for Women in STEM High School Aerospace Scholars in Houston, Texas on Tuesday, July 10 at 15:17 UTC using ground station W6SRJ in California for the telebridge. Nunavik Youth Connect with ISS On July 4, youth attending the Cirqiniq Summer Camp in Kuujjuaq, Quebec (Nunavik), Canada spoke with on-orbit astronaut Joe Acaba, KE5DAR via an Amateur Radio on the International Space Station (ARISS) contact. Telebridge station K6DUE in Greenbelt, Maryland provided the radio connection. The contact was held in conjunction with a circus camp being offered to youth, ages 13 to 17, in Nunavik that was led by a group of instructors affiliated with Cirque du Soleil®. The campers learned tight-wire walking, aerial acrobatics and juggling among other skills and ended the session with a parade and community show. This years theme was Planets and the Universe. An International Space Station school contact has been planned with participants at Women in STEM High School Aerospace Scholars, Houston, TX on 10 July. The event is scheduled to begin at approximately 15:17 UTC. The duration of the contact is approximately 9 minutes and 30 seconds. The contact will be a telebridge between NA1SS and W6SRJ. The contact should be audible over the west coast of the U.S. Interested parties are invited to listen in on the 145.80 MHz downlink. The contact is expected to be conducted in English. This contact is with a group of high school juniors participating in a summer program called WISH, an acronym for Women in STEM High School Aerospace Scholars. The students are selected from responses to a national invitation to attend multiple robust lessons for six days at Johnson Space Center in Houston. The young women attend briefings, and engage in competitive hands-on engineering activities related to space exploration and research. The ARISS contact is incorporated into the learning activities early in the week while learning about space communication and wireless technology. Actually conversing with an astronaut by radio will be another hands-on, practical application of what the students have been studying. Participants will ask as many of the following questions as time allows: 1. Does going into space change your view of everyday life? 2. When did you first plan on becoming an astronaut? 3. What was your greatest challenge in becoming an astronaut? 4. How emotionally and physically intensive was your training? 5. How has being an astronaut affected your life? 6. Upcoming ARISS contact with Cirqiniq Summer Camp, Kuujjuaq, Quebec (Nunavik), Canada

An International Space Station school contact has been planned with participants at Cirqiniq Summer Camp, Kuujjuaq, Quebec (Nunavik), Canada on 4 July. The event is scheduled to begin at approximately 14:24 UTC. The duration of the contact is approximately 9 minutes and 30 seconds. The contact will be a telebridge between NA1SS and K6DUE. The contact should be audible over mid and eastern portions of the U.S. Interested parties are invited to listen in on the 145.80 MHz downlink. The contact is expected to be conducted in English. The camp will bring together to Kuujjuaq approximately 60 youth (aged 13 to 22) from around Nunavik, 11 instructors form southern Canada and 10 other support staff and instructors. During the day, the youth will be at the Katittavik Theatre doing various circus activities and be lodged at Jaanimmarik School or Kuujjuaq Forum. In the evening, they will be participating in various art activities like painting, dance, puppet making, sewing, and throat singing. The camp starts on June 29 until July 5. The community show is scheduled for July 5 in the evening and they will be preparing the days before for this. Our camp theme this year is "Planets and the Universe" in conjunction with the last Winter Tour of the villages, which coincides nicely with the possible space contact. Participants will ask as many of the following questions as time allows: 1. What physical fitness requirements are needed to deal with the launch and stay in space? 2. How do you maintain your physical fitness levels while on an extended stay in space? 3. What are the psychological issues you face when preparing for a first time visit into space? 4. Are physical activities more difficult in space than here on earth? 5. What kind of food do you eat? 6. Does your diet change from that on earth? 7. What is the most significant impact on you, while in space, so far? 8. On your return to earth, how long does it take to overcome the effects of zero gravity? 9. Do you sleep well on the space station? 10. Are you gaining weight or losing weight while in space? 11. Do you communicate with family and friends and how? 12. Has anyone been sick on the space station? 13. What do you do when not working or not on duty? 14. Does the crew look forward to going home? 15. Have you had any encounters with other life forms while in space? 16. What can you see on Earth (i.e. lightening, jets, city lights, structures)? 17. Is the brain affected in any way by zero gravity - do you focus better or the same? 18. Does your reaction time or reflex improve in zero gravity? 19. What kind of research are you involved with? 20. Do your finger nails grow faster, the same or slower while in space? 21. What do you like the most about being in space? Amateur Radio on the International Space Station (ARISS) Status Report July 2, 2012 1. Upcoming School Contact Cirqiniq Summer Camp in Kuujjuaq, Quebec (Nunavik), Canada has been scheduled for an Amateur Radio on the International Space Station (ARISS) contact on Wednesday, July 4 at 14:23 UTC via station K6DUE in Greenbelt, Maryland. This is the third annual circus camp being offered to youth, ages 13 to 17, in Nunavik. Approximately 80 youth will gather to learn skills in circus and other art activities in Kuujjuaq. It will be led by a group of instructors and junior instructors who have been trained in social circus. The camp will end with a parade and community show. This years theme is Planets and the Universe. 2. Virginia Contact to be Rescheduled The ARISS contact that was scheduled with the Virginia Air and Space Center in Hampton, Virginia on Tuesday, June 26 was not successful due to ground station issues. ARISS will try to reschedule this event for the week of July 23. 3. ARISS Contact Featured at STEM Conference On Thursday, June 28, an Amateur Radio on the International Space Station (ARISS) contact was held between Expedition 30/31 crewmember André Kuipers and students attending the STEM Solutions Youth Summit which was part of the U.S. News STEM Solutions 2012 conference in Dallas, Texas. Telebridge station K6DUE in Maryland provided the radio hookup. The contact, a highlight of the event, provided youth the opportunity to ask Kuipers about life and work in space. Leland Melvin, Associate Administrator for Education, and Charlie Bolden, NASA Administrator, attended the conference. 4. AMSAT News Service on ARISS AMSAT (Radio Amateur Satellite Corporation) posted 2 ARISS-related articles in its News Service bulletin (ANS-183) on July 1. The first covers the ARISS contact held with Scouts Canada on June 23. The second item is about the crew change taking place on the ISS titled, Soyuz to Fly 3 Hams Up, 3 Hams Staying, 3 Hams Coming Home.
