Please join us in listening to the ISS contact with participants at the ESA Space Camp, being held at St. Columba’s College, Whitechurch, Dublin, Ireland AOS is approximately 17:25 UTC SUNDAY 22 July and is a telebridge via W6SRJ in Santa Rosa, California The duration of the contact is approximately 9 minutes and 30 seconds. The contact should be audible over the West / Midwest United States. Interested parties are invited to listen in on the 145.80 MHz downlink. The contact is expected to be conducted in English. The ARISS contact is part of an educational program of which some activities are based around André Kuipers’ mission, Spaceship Earth. Children at the camp will have 2 weeks of space education covering the themes of Climate, Biodiversity and the Human Body as well as Earth Observation and the Solar System. The children will also receive lessons about how to communicate with the crew on the ISS from a ham radio expert. Audio from this contact will be fed into the: IRLP Node 9010 Discovery Reflector EchoLink *AMSAT* (101377) and *JK1ZRW* (277208) servers Streaming Audio at: https://sites.google.com/site/arissaudio/ Audio on Echolink & web stream is generally transmitted around 20 minutes prior to the contact taking place so that you can hear some of the preparation that occurs. IRLP will begin just prior to the ground station call to the ISS. Please note that on Echolink there are automatic breaks of 1.5 seconds in the audio transmission. These occur every 2.5 minutes during the event. Breaks on IRLP are manual and occur approximately after every third question. ** Contact times are approximate. Current members of AMSAT-NA, The AMSAT-NA Board of Directors election ballots and candidate biographies are in the mail, along with the registration for the 2012 AMSAT symposium in Orlando. This year there are 6 candidates for 3 regular directors with 2 year terms, and 2 alternates for 1 year terms. For those who find the minutes of the previous AMSAT-NA Board of Directors meeting helpful, it will be in the current issue of the AMSAT Journal, which is in the mail. Amateur Radio on the International Space Station (ARISS) Status Report July 16, 2012 1. Upcoming School Contact ESA Space Camp, which is being held at St. Columbas College, Whitechurch, Dublin, Ireland, has been scheduled for an Amateur Radio on the International Space Station (ARISS) contact on Sunday, July 22 at 17:25 UTC via telebridge station W6SRJ in California. ARISS Contact with Women in STEM An Amateur Radio on the International Space Station (ARISS) contact was held with Women in STEM High School Aerospace Scholars in Houston, Texas on Tuesday, July 10 via telebridge station W6SRJ in California. The high school girls came from across the U.S. to participate in the program which provided them the opportunity to plan a space exploration mission and to learn from women that work at NASA. Joe Acaba, KE5DAR on ISS answered 23 questions during the Q&A session. Approximately 150 students and guests were present for the event. ARISS Exhibit at Moon Day 2012 Moon Day 2012 will be held at the Frontiers of Flight Museum at Love Field in Dallas, Texas on July 21 to commemorate Neil Armstrongs walk on the moon on July 21, 1969. The event will feature space exhibits, demonstrations and other space activities. Expedition 30/31Crew Scheduled for Debrief Astronauts Don Pettit and André Kuipers (Expedition 30/31) will take part in a debrief session to give feedback on the ARISS program. The debrief is currently scheduled for August 15. 5. AMSAT News Service on ARISS On July 15, AMSAT (Radio Amateur Satellite Corporation) posted an article in its News Service bulletin (ANS-197) on the Soyuz TMA-05M crew that was launched on July 15 and is headed toward the Space Station. ARRL Covers ARISS News The American Radio Relay League (ARRL) ran a story in its July 12 ARRL Letter about the new crew members joining Expedition 32 on the ISS. Author Norm Fusaro (W3IZ) reported about one particular trucker, "Of the thousands of contacts he has made from his truck John recalls making a packet connection to the International Space Station as one of his most memorable contacts. John said he made this contact at a rest stop." A short article in the "Up Front" column covered ARISS team member Farrell Winder, W8ZCF, and Jeff Winder, KB8VCO, who described how they and two other hams worldwide managed to make a 70 cm SSTV contact via ARISSat-1 late last year. Farrell said it was "a lot of hard earned fun, challenge and education." Farrell was on the ARISS team.

For US schools to have an ARISS contact, they must fill out a proposal, submit it to NASA, and see if they are approved or not. Once a school is approved and put on the list, an ARISS mentor will be assigned to assist the school. NASA will have two open windows a year for schools to submit a proposal. The window for contacts during the second half of 2012 has already closed. Look for the window for first half 2013 contacts later this year. You must go through NASA to get the proposal material. Amateur Radio on the International Space Station (ARISS) Status Report July 9, 2012 1. Upcoming School Contacts An Amateur Radio on the International Space Station (ARISS) contact has been slated for Women in STEM High School Aerospace Scholars in Houston, Texas on Tuesday, July 10 at 15:17 UTC using ground station W6SRJ in California for the telebridge. The contact is part of a comprehensive education plan which will pique students interest in Science, Technology, Engineering and Math (STEM). ESA Space Camp, which will be held at St. Columbas College, Whitechurch, Dublin, Ireland, has been scheduled for an Amateur Radio on the International Space Station (ARISS) contact on Sunday, July 22 at 17:25 UTC via telebridge station W6SRJ in California. The ARISS contact is part of an educational program of which some activities are based around André Kuipers mission, Spaceship Earth. Children at the camp will have 2 weeks of space education covering the themes of Climate, Biodiversity and the Human Body as well as Earth Observation and the Solar System. The children will also receive lessons about how we communicate with the crew on the ISS from a ham radio expert. 2. Nunavik Youth Connect with ISS On July 4, youth attending the Cirqiniq Summer Camp in Kuujjuaq, Quebec (Nunavik), Canada spoke with on-orbit astronaut Joe Acaba, KE5DAR via an Amateur Radio on the International Space Station (ARISS) contact. Telebridge station K6DUE in Greenbelt, Maryland provided the radio connection. The contact was held in conjunction with a circus camp being offered to youth, ages 13 to 17, in Nunavik that was led by a group of instructors affiliated with Cirque du Soleil®. The campers learned tight-wire walking, aerial acrobatics and juggling among other skills and ended the session with a parade and community show. This years theme was Planets and the Universe. Local media covered the event. 3. ARRL Article on ISS Crew Change The American Radio Relay League (ARRL) ran a story in its July 5 ARRL Letter about the crew change taking place on the ISS. An International Space Station school contact has been planned with participants at Women in STEM High School Aerospace Scholars, Houston, TX on 10 July. The event is scheduled to begin at approximately 15:17 UTC. The duration of the contact is approximately 9 minutes and 30 seconds. The contact will be a telebridge between NA1SS and W6SRJ. The contact should be audible over the west coast of the U.S. Interested parties are invited to listen in on the 145.80 MHz downlink. The contact is expected to be conducted in English. This contact is with a group of high school juniors participating in a summer program called WISH, an acronym for Women in STEM High School Aerospace Scholars. The students are selected from responses to a national invitation to attend multiple robust lessons for six days at Johnson Space Center in Houston. The young women attend briefings, and engage in competitive hands-on engineering activities related to space exploration and research. The ARISS contact is incorporated into the learning activities early in the week while learning about space communication and wireless technology. Actually conversing with an astronaut by radio will be another hands-on, practical application of what the students have been studying. Participants will ask as many of the following questions as time allows: 1. Does going into space change your view of everyday life? 2. When did you first plan on becoming an astronaut? 3. What was your greatest challenge in becoming an astronaut? 4. How emotionally and physically intensive was your training? 5. How has being an astronaut affected your life? 6. Do you think there are gender personality differences that might affect astronaut's decisions on a mission? 7. Who or what inspired you to become an astronaut? 8. What is most personally rewarding about your being an astronaut? 9. Do you have any input on planning mission objectives? 10. How have you dealt with your toughest challenge of weightlessness? 11. What is the most serious physical problem that living in space poses? 12. What is the most practical scholastic route to becoming an astronaut? 13. What was running through your mind when you first launched into space? 14. When you look at Earth from space, what do you feel or think about? 15. Have unexpected situations during your mission taught you new lessons? 16. How can a girl going into aerospace avoid some pitfalls you have had? 17. What examples of advanced technology have helped you live and work in space? 18. What is the most difficult part of returning to earth? 19. What have you learned from the TYPOLOGIA experiment? 20.
