An International Space Station school contact has been planned with participants at Sacred Heart School of Halifax, Halifax, Nova Scotia, Canada on 26 Sept. The event is scheduled to begin at approximately 16:07 UTC. The duration of the contact is approximately 9 minutes and 30 seconds. The contact will be a telebridge between NA1SS and LU8YY. The contact should be audible over Argentina and portions of South America. Interested parties are invited to listen in on the 145.80 MHz downlink. The contact is expected to be conducted in English. The Sacred Hearts School of Halifax is buzzing with activity in preparation for our upcoming ARISS contact. As part of the question selection process it was decided that before school recessed for the summer students who wished to participate in the ARISS contact were asked to provide at least two questions and to create posters that depicted each of those questions. With the contact just weeks away we've hung all the posters throughout the school for all to enjoy. In the weeks leading up to the contact classroom activities will be, as much as possible, focused on a space theme. Invitations have been extended to a number of Federal, Provincial and Municipal Government officials as well as parents and a host of media. A special guest speaker, science writer and broadcaster Richard Zurawski has also been invited to provide a pre-contact presentation. Participants will ask as many of the following questions as time allows: 1. I understand that bones start to lose calcium at an accelerated rate in space and because of that you do testing for osteoporosis. Are there any other diseases or conditions that you test for while on the Space Station? 2. What is the hardest transition when you leave Earth and go to space? 3. How do you prepare yourself for nausea caused by the lack of gravity in space? 4. What types of new technologies are used on the Space Station? 5. How does the Space Station protect you from radiation? 6. What effects do space storms have on the Space Station? 7. How often are parts replaced on the I.S.S.? 8. What is you favourite thing to do while you're in orbit. 9. What do you do for entertainment while you're in orbit? 10. What type of research do you do on the I.S.S.? 11. What are the medical side effects of living in space? 12. Are you proud to be an astronaut? 13. What kinds of research do you do on the I.S.S. that might improve people's health back on Earth? 14. How do your eating and sleeping patterns change when you're in space? 15. Do you believe that it will be possible to send humans to Mars in the future? 16. How does your body adjust after returning to Earth from space? 17. How do you exercise in space? 18. What happens if you get hurt while on the I.S.S.? 19. Amateur Radio on the International Space Station (ARISS) Status Report September 24, 2012 1. Upcoming School Contacts An Amateur Radio on the International Space Station (ARISS) contact has been scheduled for Waxter Young Womens Academy in Laurel, Maryland on Monday, September 24 at 17:44 UTC via telebridge station LU8YY in Argentina. The ARISS contact is part of a comprehensive education plan which will pique students interest in Science, Technology, Engineering and Math (STEM). An Amateur Radio on the International Space Station (ARISS) contact is planned for Sacred Heart School of Halifax in Nova Scotia, Canada on Wednesday, September 26 at 16:07 UTC via telebridge station LU8YY in Argentina. The contact will be incorporated into science lessons through which students will learn about the ISS, its mission, its background and the significance of its contributions to science as well as our daily lives on Earth. 2. Successful Contacts Held Students from Zespól Szkól Technicznych w Kole in Kolo, Poland participated in an Amateur Radio on the International Space Station (ARISS) contact with Akihiko Hoshide, KE5DNI, aboard the ISS on Wednesday, September 19. Hoshide answered all 18 questions posed by the students during the overhead pass, which included topics on astronaut training, education, and skills and abilities needed on the ISS. AOS is scheduled for 1607 UTC The duration of the contact is approximately 9 minutes and 30 seconds. The contact will be a telebridge between NA1SS and LU8YY in Argentina. The contact is expected to be conducted in English. Audio from this contact will be fed into the: EchoLink *AMSAT* (101377) and *JK1ZRW* (277208) servers IRLP Node 9010 Discovery Reflector & Streaming Audio at: https://sites.google.com/site/arissaudio/ Audio on Echolink & web stream is generally transmitted around 20 minutes prior to the contact taking place so that you can hear some of the preparation that occurs. IRLP will begin just prior to the ground station call to the ISS. Please note that on Echolink there are automatic breaks of 1.5 seconds in the audio transmission. An International Space Station school contact has been planned with participants at Lafayette Middle School, Lafayette, GA on 21 Sept. The event is scheduled to begin at approximately 15:03 UTC. The duration of the contact is approximately 9 minutes and 30 seconds. The contact will be direct between NA1SS and W4LMS. The contact should be audible over the U.S. state of Georgia and adjacent areas. Interested parties are invited to listen in on the 145.80 MHz downlink. The contact is expected to be conducted in English. LaFayette Middle School serves southern Walker County, Georgia. 80% of LMS students receive free or reduced meals. Currently 65% of Walker County students graduate, up from 58% 3 years ago, during which time Walker County Schools adopted the following mission statement: "It is the Mission of Walker County Schools to ensure all students graduate - Ready for College, Ready for Work, Ready for Life!" LaFayette Middle School has had an amateur radio club since 2007. Since it's inception, the Rambler Radio Club has had the goal to expose our students to other cultures, take them out of their current reality, and show them what could be possible through their personal education. This ARISS Contact will be a perfect fit for the WCS System mission statement and Rambler Radio's goal. We anticipate an audience of over 1,000 for our ARISS contact here at LaFayette Middle School. LMS is currently the third largest school in Walker County, Georgia, with an anticipated student population of 900 in grades 6-8. The local population of LaFayette is 8,000 with half of our students living in the city limits and the other half living in the outlying rural area. Participants will ask as many of the following questions as time allows: 1. What time zone do you use on the ISS? 2. What fuels the Space Station? 3. Does everyone there have a specific job? 4. Describe a normal day on the ISS. 5. How do you perform daily tasks like cooking, eating, and laundry on the Space Station? 6. Other than gravity, what are the differences between life in Space and life on Earth? 7. What landmarks on Earth can you see from space? 8. Between launch and re-entry which one scares you the most and why? 9. How has being in space changed your perspective of Earth and life on Earth? 10. What is the weirdest thing you have seen or experienced while in space? 11. What made you want to be an astronaut? 12. How do you exercise in space? 13. Not counting your training, how long does it take you to get to the International Space Station? 14. What is the interior temperature on board the International Space Station? 15. How do you deal with coughing and sneezing in space? 16. How do you deal with sickness on board? 17. How do you sleep in space? 18. Do you conserve resources such as water, electricity, etc. since you only have a limited amount? 19. Do you ever get claustrophobic while living on the ISS? 20. An International Space Station school contact has been planned with participants at Sunset Hills Elementary, San Diego, CA on 20 Sept. The event is scheduled to begin at approximately 17:24 UTC. The duration of the contact is approximately 9 minutes and 30 seconds. The contact will be direct between NA1SS and KI6LZN. The contact should be audible over California and adjacent areas. Interested parties are invited to listen in on the 145.80 MHz downlink. The contact is expected to be conducted in English. Sunset Hills Elementary School is a K-5 school in Northern San Diego. We opened in 1972 and have many families that are second generational "Seagulls". Our diverse student population of 440 students' encompasses almost 20 different languages. We pride ourselves on implementing a positive school wide climate where "Seagulls Soar and Character Counts!" Our slogan for the year is "Shooting for the Stars and Beyond." Prior to the ARISS event our PTA is hosting a family event, inviting families to "Come blast off to a new school year!" in which tables will be set up for students to learn more about the International Space Station using interactive presentations, and making arts and crafts. Our neighborhood high school HAMM radio club will have a booth to show our students what a HAMM radio is. We will have community members with telescopes set up for students to look through to catch a glimpse of constellations. Fourth grade students have researched life on the International Space Station and created a book to share with the younger students in the school. All students will continue to learn more about the International Space Station through the educational activities on the NASA website. All 3rd-5th grade students had the opportunity to audition to be a Space Ambassador for the day of the event. The duties of the Space Ambassadors will include: Speakers, Press Greeters, Photographers, and Videographers during the actual event. As one of our students shared about our upcoming ARISS event, "Speaking to an astronaut in outer space is truly a once in a life time opportunity!" Natalie,4th grade. Participants will ask as many of the following questions as time allows: 1. What do you eat? How do you eat and drink? How do you get your food? 2. How do you get fresh oxygen? What do you do when you run out of oxygen? 3. How much exercise do you do to stay healthy? How do you exercise? 4. Living in that small space, do you ever get angry at your partners? If so, how so you solve the problem? 5. How does it feel to live with zero gravity? 6. Does your body hurt when you go through the atmosphere? How does it feel going from earth to space? When you come back to earth does it feel differently? 7. In space, do you have sunrise and sunset? How do you keep track of time? Are your days longer or shorter? 8. Why did you decide to become an astronaut? 9. What do you do if you get sick in space? Do you get dizzy when the space station moves? Have you had any allergic reactions? 10. What are some of the dangers in space? Have you ever been in such a bad situation that you guys thought you wouldn't survive? 11. In space, are you closer to the sun? How does that feel? 12. What do you do when you are not working? What do you do for fun? 13. What planet do you think we will likely be able to live on in the future? 14. What type of experiments do you do? An International Space Station school contact has been planned with participants at Zespól Szkól Technicznych w Kole, Kolo, Poland on 19 Sept. The event is scheduled to begin at approximately 07:15 UTC. The duration of the contact is approximately 9 minutes and 30 seconds. The contact will be direct between OR4ISS and SP3PGZ. The contact should be audible over Poland and adjacent areas. Interested parties are invited to listen in on the 145.80 MHz downlink. The contact is expected to be conducted in English. Zespol Szkol Technicznych (Complex of Technical Schools, abr. ZST) in Kolo is a modern, dynamic and constantly developing school with more than 60 years tradition, and a well-qualified staff. We are one of the largest secondary schools in our region. Currently, we teach more than 1000 students between 16 and 20 years old. We regularly modernize our facilities with better equipment and by doing so we keep expanding our educational base to match contemporary teaching standards. The school itself is well equipped in computer hardware as we have got almost one hundred computers, majority of which are used by students and teachers during classes every day. Teachers and students have access to the library which also serves as a data bank containing information about our students' results and progress they make throughout their time at our school. The library also provides free access to a broadband internet connection for students and teachers alike. We equip our students with practical skills in IT, Environment Protection and Car Mechanics. Students of our school take new challenges very eagerly. In our work we utilize modern teaching techniques and encourage our students to participation in various projects such as ARISS school contact. Except participating in ARISS educational program we have just completed building an ECO-ROBOT, a small submarine-like drone with various spectrographic equipment on board and changeable head. We also promote care for the environment in our local community and run a carting club. ZST also has a tradition in the radio contact field. Our School Amateur Radio Club SP3PGZ was established in 1976 and since then it has been active on many radio bands. The main goals of the club are: promoting shortwave radio communication as a hobby for young people, cooperation in organizing local events, and taking part in competitions. In what way is the ISS protected from solar flare radiation? 7. What can astronauts see from the Station's windows? 8. What special skills and abilities are required in order to take part in the mission? 9. What operating system do you use in the computers for research and controlling the station? 10. What works better in no-gravity environment - pen or pencil? 11. What is the temperature, pressure and air composition inside the station? 12. Has there ever been a case of sickness like a cold, aboard the station? If yes, how was it dealt with? 13. What are the key resources that the ISS needs for full functionality? 14. What schools do I have to attend, what languages do I need to learn and what should I target after school education to become an astronaut? 15. How much of free time do ISS members have during their stay on board? 16. How fast is your Internet connection and how does it work? 17. How does a cut in space look like and does it heal faster? 18. Amateur Radio on the International Space Station (ARISS) Status Report September 17, 2012 1. Upcoming School Contacts Zespól Szkól Technicznych w Kole, Kolo, Poland will participate in an Amateur Radio on the International Space Station (ARISS) contact on Wednesday, September 19 at 07:15 UTC. Besides learning about space, amateur radio and satellite tracking in the classroom, students are also attending lectures on astronautics, engineering and astronomy. They are involved with related hands-on activities and competitions, with the winners receiving the opportunity to question the ISS astronaut. In addition, the school is forming astronomy and amateur radio clubs for the youth. The event will be broadcast live via the internet on: http://live.arisspolska.info/ An Amateur Radio on the International Space Station (ARISS) contact has been planned for Sunset Hills Elementary School in San Diego, California on Thursday, September 20 at 17:24 UTC. Students are learning about the radio and space through age-appropriate hands-on activities. NASA education Web site materials are being used and guest speakers from the local Amateur Radio club will give a presentation to the students. Lafayette Middle School, La Fayette, Georgia is slated for an Amateur Radio on the International Space Station (ARISS) contact on Friday, September 21 at 15:03 UTC. The school will use the ARISS contact to promote the areas of Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics within its entire system. It hopes to arrange for Skype interviews with guests for the ARISS event: Dr. Rob Suggs and Dr. Bill Cooke of Marshall Space Flight Center in Huntsville, Alabama; Cristi Whitworth, Educational Director for Pisgah Astronomical Research Institute; and Dr. June Scobee Rodgers, Founding Chair of the Challenger Center at the University of Tennessee at Chattanooga. 2. Successful Contacts Held Students attending Maroochydore State School in Maroochydore, Queensland, Australia participated in an Amateur Radio on the International Space Station (ARISS) contact on Wednesday, September 12 via telebridge station VK4KHZ in Australia. Akihiko Hoshide, KE5DNI answered 14 questions of the students before the ISS went over the horizon. Approximately 40 students and guests were in attendance and the contact received coverage by radio, television and newspapers. The contact was integrated into a comprehensive space curriculum, with lessons focused on the Venus Transit, the Juno mission and the Curiosity mission. An ARISS contact was held between Joe Acaba, KE5DAR on the ISS and Marcelino Canino Canino Middle School in Dorado, Puerto Rico on Wednesday, September 12 via telebridge station K6DUE in Greenbelt, Maryland. The session was conducted in Spanish, with all 16 questions answered. The students are involved in a Microsatellite Hardware program through which they design, build, launch, track and retrieve their microsatellites with the assistance of many local amateur radio operators. The school, located in a rural area of Dorado, has an enrollment of 464 students of which 78% live below the poverty level and 26% receive special education services. On Thursday, September 13, Sunita Williams, KD5PLB spoke with students at the Gymnasium Unterrieden in Sindelfingen, Germany through an ARISS contact and answered their space-related questions. One hundred people showed up for the event, including 4 media outlets. The audio was broadcasted via 2 amateur radio relays. The contact was integrated into several other amateur radio activities which included the students preparing for entry level amateur radio licenses and building a satellite receiving station. Video has been posted: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=u_uOnhrsOvg A second ARISS contact that Akihiko Hoshide, KE5DNI took part in last week was with children at the NASA Goddard Space Flight Center in Greenbelt, Maryland on Thursday, September 13. The students had 21 questions answered during the ISS pass, and as the coordinating person at Goddard had previously asked another astronaut for answers to the questions, the remaining students still received "official" answers to their questions. Nearly 100 people were in attendance, with 4 media cameras recording the event. Prince George's County Community TV reported on the event. Daytona Beach Amateur Radio Association supported the school in this endeavor. The contact was integrated into lessons on radio waves, electricity, communications, geography and languages. 3. Astronaut Training Status Gregory Wiseman, KF5LKT took part in a basic operations training session on Wednesday, September 12. He is slated to fly with the Expedition 40 crew in May 2014. 4. ARRL Articles on ARISS The American Radio Relay League (ARRL) carried two articles related to ARISS in its ARRL Letter on September 13. The first item covers the return of Expedition 31/32 crew members to Earth. The second talks about the ARRL convention to be held in California on October 12-14. Astronaut Lee Morin will be a guest speaker at the event and ARISS member Kenneth Ransom, N5VHO will also attend. The DIRECT contact at Burns Sci-Tech Charter School in Florida, USA at 1821 UTC is supposed to be available on the web at: https://new.livestream.com/accounts/1446029/burnstech If the audio quality is good I will relay it via the usual Echolink and IRLP systems. As a reminder audio from the contact will be fed into the: EchoLink *AMSAT* (101377) and *JK1ZRW* (277208) servers IRLP Node 9010 Discovery Reflector Audio on Echolink is generally transmitted around 20 minutes prior to the contact taking place so that you can hear some of the preparation that occurs. Burns Science and Technology Charter School is a K-8 public charter school operating within the Volusia County School District. It is a tuition free school, with an open admission policy. It is located in a rural area in the town of Oak Hill, Florida. The school is a STEM school, offering core curriculum, with emphasis on science, technology, and 21st century literacies. The school has a strong belief that in order to prepare students for success in the 21st century, today's learners must be able to think critically and creatively, work collaboratively, and master an ever growing arena of skills. The student body is made up of 382 students from all over the Volusia County area. The school has 20 classroom teachers, four special area teachers, and one teaching assistant. The school's mission is to cultivate learners and leaders who are inspired, able, and prepared to make a positive difference in the world. Through collaborative efforts with the school, NASA representatives, and the Daytona Beach Amateur Radio Association, the school is able to house a ham radio club. Amateur operators teaming with school personnel developed, organized, and planned the ARISS contact for September, 2012. Students participating in this contact come from the NASA Goddard Child Development Center (GCDC), the Howard B. Owens Science Center, and the Robert Goddard French Immersion School. NASA Goddard Child Development Center is located on Goddard Space Flight Center. Over the summer, our students studied the International Space Station for seven weeks. This unit of study included six missions, including astronaut training, life and experiments aboard ISS, and space travel. Our summer program included traveling to see Shuttle Discovery, a visit from astronaut Don Thomas, watching model rockets launch, a planetarium visit, doing science experiments, creating our own ISS modules, and learning about Curiosity. To get into the fun of things, we played a student-selected "wake-up song" each day to get our day going. Students asking questions from GCDC are enrolled in our kindergarten program. The Howard B. Owens Science Center is a public school facility in Prince George's County, Maryland. Our learning programs incorporate the areas of science, technology, engineering and mathematics for students in public schools, private schools, home schools, and Scout troops. We also provide community outreach through our Family Science Events and monthly Friday night planetarium shows. Our facility includes a Challenger Learning Center, a 170-seat planetarium, nature trail, live animal exhibit, computer labs, science laboratories and classrooms. We are located near the NASA Goddard Space Flight Center. The Robert Goddard French Immersion School is a K-8 magnet program in Prince George's County in which the children are taught in French. The contact is expected to be conducted in Spanish. Marcelino Canino Canino Middle School is located in a rural area in the town of Dorado in the northern coast of Puerto Rico. Our student body is made up of 464 students out of which approximately 78% live under the poverty level. 100% of our students receive Title I services and over 100 (26%) receive special education services. We have 35 teachers and there are usually 3 teaching assistants assigned to the school. For the past seven years I have implemented in the school a Microsatellite Hardware Student Program where students design, construct, build and launch their microsatellites which are them tracked and recovered with the help of my colleagues amateur radio operators. Besides this I have a NASA Explorer School Program since 2005 and other science oriented educational proposals in our school to help motivate our largely underprivileged population to become competitive professionals in the global economy. This coming school year we will share facilities with the local high which is why our schedule is from 7:00 am to noon and then it becomes the high school. The amateur operators involved in this activity mostly belong to the Puerto Rico DX Club but overall most of the amateur organizations in the island help out when we have this type of activity. This is a team that has experience in field activities and have been helping out since our first ARISS contact in 2002. Our unique beachside school was established in 1924. Amateur Radio on the International Space Station (ARISS) Status Report September 10, 2012 1. Upcoming School Contacts An Amateur Radio on the International Space Station (ARISS) contact is planned with Maroochydore State School in Maroochydore, Queensland, Australia on Wednesday, September 12 at 07:03 UTC via telebridge station VK4KHZ in Australia. The contact will be integrated into a comprehensive science curriculum. Robotics kits were provided to the students and an astronomy club was formed at the school. Lessons have focused on the Venus Transit, the Juno mission and the Curiosity mission. An Amateur Radio on the International Space Station (ARISS) contact is planned for Thursday, September 13 with children from NASA Goddard Child Development Center (GCDC), Greenbelt, MD, Howard B. Owens Science Center, Lanham, MD and University of Maryland's Center for Young Children, College Park, MD. The contact will take place at 16:43 UTC. The contact and supporting activities will strengthen the students' interest in science, technology, engineering and mathematics subject matter. Burns Sci-Tech Charter School in Oak Hill, Florida is slated for an Amateur Radio on the International Space Station (ARISS) contact on Thursday, September 13 at 18:21 UTC. Daytona Beach Amateur Radio Association, Inc. will support the school in this endeavor. The contact will be integrated into lessons on radio waves, electricity, communications, geography and languages. 2. German Students Delighted with ARISS Contact An Amateur Radio on the International Space Station (ARISS) contact was held between on-orbit astronaut Sunita Williams, KD5PLB and students at the Gymnasium Michelstadt in Michelstadt, Germany on Friday, September 7. Williams was able to answer 14 questions posed by the students during the ISS pass. Over 1600 students, teachers, and VIP's were in attendance, as well as representatives from radio, television and newspapers. Positive feedback was received from the school, including the following: "Older colleagues compared the feeling to watching the moon landing in TV. Our Kids were electrified and already now we can see an increased interest in sciences and extracurricular activities. We are planning to continue this topic and have further projects in this field." Girls' School Speaks with ISS Astronaut On Sunday, September 9, Tara Anglican School in North Parramatta, New South Wales, Australia spoke with Astronaut Sunita Williams, KD5PLB via an Amateur Radio on the International Space Station (ARISS) contact. The radio connection was provided by telebridge station ON4ISS in Belgium. The contact was integrated into the school's science and space curriculum. Tara Anglican, a girls K-12 school, was selected by Oxford University as the Australian school to participate in the Global Jet Watch Program which links astronomers at Oxford University with students from four high schools around the world in Australia, Chile, South Africa and India in order to carry out cutting edge research. Oxford University installed a research grade 20 inch RC Optical telescope, together with custom designed instrumentation and an observatory with a 4.5 metre dome on Tara's grounds for use by the students. The school also formed a partnership with the Astronomical Society of New South Wales (ASNSW) through which students are mentored in complex astronomy projects by experienced amateur astronomers. 4. Please join us in listening to the ISS contact with participants at the Tara Anglican School, North Parramatta, New South Wales, Australia, on Sunday September 9th. AOS is approximately 0850 UTC. The duration of the contact is approximately 9 minutes and 30 seconds. The contact will be a telebridge between NA1SS and ON4ISS in Belgium. The contact should be audible over the east coast of the U.S. Interested parties are invited to listen in on the 145.80 MHz downlink. The contact is expected to be conducted in English. Tara was selected by Oxford University as the Australian school to participate in the *Global Jet Watch Program* which links astronomers at Oxford University with students from four high schools around the world in Australia, Chile, South Africa and India in order to carry out cutting edge research.* *Oxford University has installed a research grade 20 inch RC Optical telescope, together with custom designed instrumentation and an observatory with a 4.5 metre dome in Tara's grounds for use by the students. Tara also has formed a partnership with the Astronomical Society of NSW (ASNSW) though which the students are mentored in complex astronomy projects by experienced amateur astronomers who volunteer their time and expertise. The ASNSW runs astronomy courses at Tara and has opened Crago Observatory at Bowern Mountain to students of the *Space Odyssey Team. * Audio from this contact will be fed into the: EchoLink *AMSAT* (101377) and *JK1ZRW* (277208) servers IRLP Node 9010 Discovery Reflector <http://71.201.154.196:88/broadwave.m3u?src=1&rate=1> Audio on Echolink is generally transmitted around 20 minutes prior to the contact taking place so that you can hear some of the preparation that occurs. IRLP will begin just prior to the ground station call to the ISS. Please note that on Echolink there are automatic breaks of 1.5 seconds in the audio transmission. These occur every 2.5 minutes during the event. Breaks on IRLP are manual and occur approximately after every third question. ** Contact times are approximate. An International Space Station school contact has been planned with participants at Gymnasium Michelstadt, Michelstadt, Germany on 07 Sept. The event is scheduled to begin at approximately 08:52 UTC. The duration of the contact is approximately 9 minutes and 30 seconds. The contact will be direct between OR4ISS and DK0DK. The contact should be audible over Germany and adjacent areas. Interested parties are invited to listen in on the 145.80 MHz downlink. The contact is expected to be conducted in English. Michelstadt is a remote city located in the center of Germany and surrounded by a low mountain range. The city was mentioned the first time in historic documents of the year 741. Several historic buildings survived till today; most famous are the convent "Einhardsbasilika" (827) and the historic town hall (1484). The environment is dominated by temperate broadleaf forest and agricultural fields. The population of Michelstadt and its neighbor city Erbach counts around 30.000 inhabitants. The closest cities in the area are Darmstadt (in 50 km distance, ESA satellite control center), Heidelberg (in 60 km distance, US army base) and Frankfurt (in 70 km distance, main international airport). The Gymnasium Michelstadt was founded by the count Albert of Erbach-Fuerstenau in 1823. Today the school teaches over 1500 students and employs about 120 teachers. Being the only secondary school dedicated exclusively to high education standards, the school attracts students of the entire region. Many students have to travel over 30 minutes to school each morning. Due to its size it offers many specializations and voluntary courses, especially in science and music. The school aims not only to educate the students but also supports them in the development of their personality. In the last years students took successfully part in a science contest "jugend forscht". The school had some insights into space research due to our yearly visits to the ESA satellite control center. The entire school is excited about being chosen for a contact with the ISS and looks forward to the day of the contact. Participants will ask as many of the following questions as time allows: 1. What was the most interesting scientific project you were involved in at the ISS? 2. Is living in space living up to the expectations you had on earth? 3. Did some things in space surprise you or were you prepared for everything by the training on earth? 4. What was the biggest accident or mishap during your time on the ISS? 5. Are you able to follow major sport events, for example the super bowl? 6. Is zero gravity fun or does it get annoying after some time? 7. How do American astronauts vote for the president? 8. Are there some things that are really annoying on ISS? 9. Do you miss things from earth on ISS? 10. How is sleeping at zero gravity? 11. How do you spend your free time? 12. How is a typical day on the space station? 13. Do you feel any medical effects of the zero gravity? What do you do to prevent them? 14. How was your first impression seeing the earth out of space? 15. Can you see the Chinese Wall or any other human made structure form space? 16. Can you notice anything when you leave or re-enter the earth atmosphere? 17. Are you afraid of meteorite or space debris hits? 18. Are you allowed to drink alcoholic drinks? 19. Amateur Radio on the International Space Station (ARISS) Status Report September 4, 2012 1. Upcoming School Contacts An Amateur Radio on the International Space Station (ARISS) contact has been scheduled for Marcelino Canino Canino Middle School in Dorado, Puerto Rico on Tuesday, September 4 at 14:17 UTC via telebridge station K6DUE in Greenbelt, Maryland. The ARISS contact is part of a comprehensive education plan which will pique students' interest in Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics (STEM). An Amateur Radio on the International Space Station (ARISS) contact has been scheduled for Gymnasium Michelstadt in Michelstadt, Germany on Friday, September 7 at 08:52 UTC. The school is part of the MINT network which specializes in the fields of Mathematics, Informatics, Nature sciences and Technology. It hopes to involve a large number of students and get them interested in science through the ARISS contact and associated hands-on activities, field trips and guest speakers. Tara Anglican School in North Parramatta, New South Wales, Australia has been scheduled for an Amateur Radio on the International Space Station (ARISS) contact on Sunday, September 9 at 08:50 UTC via telebridge station ON4ISS in Belgium. Tara Anglican is a girls K-12 school with an observatory. The school's Astronomy Group involves students from many local schools. The ARISS contact will highlight lessons on astronomy. 2. Successful Contacts Astronaut Akihiko Hoshide, KE5DNI participated in two ARISS (Amateur Radio on the International Space Station) contacts over the past week. He spoke with students attending Megina Gymnasium Mayen in Mayen, Germany on Friday, August 31 and with youth from the Iruma Junior Ham Club in Iruma, Japan on Sunday, September 2. Sunita Williams, KD5PLB picked up a third ARISS contact with the National Electronics Museum in Linthicum, Maryland on Saturday, September 1. The radio contacts were integrated into comprehensive science and math lessons.

An International Space Station school contact has been planned with participants at Marcelino Canino Canino Middle School, Dorado, Puerto Rico on 04 Sept. The event is scheduled to begin at approximately 14:17 UTC. The duration of the contact is approximately 9 minutes and 30 seconds. The contact will be a telebridge between NA1SS and K6DUE. The contact should be audible over the east coast of the U.S.and adjacent areas. Interested parties are invited to listen in on the 145.80 MHz downlink. The contact is expected to be conducted in English. Marcelino Canino Canino Middle School is located in a rural area in the town of Dorado in the northern coast of Puerto Rico. Our student body is made up of 464 students out of which approximately 78% live under the poverty level. 100% of our students receive Title I services and over 100 (26%) receive special education services. We have 35 teachers and there are usually 3 teaching assistants assigned to the school. For the past seven years I have implemented in the school a Microsatellite Hardware Student Program where students design, construct, build and launch their microsatellites which are them tracked and recovered with the help of my colleagues amateur radio operators. Besides this I have a NASA Explorer School Program since 2005 and other science oriented educational proposals in our school to help motivate our largely underprivileged population to become competitive professionals in the global economy. This coming school year we will share facilities with the local high which is why our schedule is from 7:00 am to noon and then it becomes the high school. The amateur operators involved in this activity mostly belong to the Puerto Rico DX Club but overall most of the amateur organizations in the island help out when we have this type of activity. This is a team that has experience in field activities and have been helping out since our first ARISS contact in 2002. Overall about thirty operators are involved in different areas of the activity: loaning equipment, planning strategy, setting up the primary and secondary stations, putting up and taking down antenna assembly, working the activity and taking down equipment to return to owners. These upstanding hams think it is an honor to participate in these activities, I think it is an honor to have them helping me out. Participants will ask as many of the following questions (translated) as time allows: 1. What do you do like to eat aboard the ISS? Do you have a refrigerator to store your food in? 2. If you could remove part of your daily routine in space, what would it be? 3. How do you take care of your dirty laundry and what happens to your trash? 4. How do keep the space station clean, how do the chores get done? 5. How do you go to the bathroom? What do you do with the solid waste? 6. How do you sleep in space? 7. What is work as mission specialist like? 8. How do you know if it is day or night? 9. How do you exercise in space? 10. How do you know are being protected from radiation even though there is no ozone layer to protect you? 11. How do you bathe in space? 12. What happens if someone in the station gets extremely sick or severely injured? 13. We know that you work very hard in space. What do you do to relax and have fun? 14. How do you produce electricity for the Space Station? 15. What happens to you when you return to space and have to get used to gravity again, what will this process be like? 16. For US schools to have an ARISS contact, they must fill out a proposal, submit it to NASA, and see if they are approved or not. Once a school is approved and put on the list, an ARISS mentor will be assigned to assist the school. NASA will have two open windows a year for schools to submit a proposal. The window for contacts during the second half of 2012 has already closed. Look for the window for first half 2013 contacts later this year. You must go through NASA to get the proposal material. Please join us in listening to the ISS contact with participants at the Marcelino Canino Canino Middle School, Dorado, Puerto Rico, on Tuesday September 4th. AOS is approximately 1417 UTC. The duration of the contact is approximately 9 minutes and 30 seconds. The contact will be a telebridge between NA1SS and K6DUE in Greenbelt, Maryland, USA. The contact should be audible over the east coast of the U.S. Interested parties are invited to listen in on the 145.80 MHz downlink. The contact is expected to be conducted in English. Marcelino Canino Canino Middle School is located in a rural area in the town of Dorado in the northern coast of Puerto Rico. Our student body is made up of 464 students out of which approximately 78% live under the poverty level. 100% of our students receive Title I services and over 100 (26%) receive special education services. We have 35 teachers and there are usually 3 teaching assistants assigned to the school. For the past seven years I have implemented in the school a Microsatellite Hardware Student Program where students design, construct, build and launch their microsatellites which are them tracked and recovered with the help of my colleagues amateur radio operators. Besides this I have a NASA Explorer School Program since 2005 and other science oriented educational proposals in our school to help motivate our largely underprivileged population to become competitive professionals in the global economy. This coming school year we will share facilities with the local high which is why our schedule is from 7:00 am to noon and then it becomes the high school. Audio from this contact will be fed into the: EchoLink *AMSAT* (101377) and *JK1ZRW* (277208) servers IRLP Node 9010 Discovery Reflector Streaming Audio at: https://sites.google.com/site/arissaudio/<http://71.201.154.196:88/broadwave.m3u?src=1&rate=1> Audio on Echolink & web stream is generally transmitted around 20 minutes prior to the contact taking place so that you can hear some of the preparation that occurs. IRLP will begin just prior to the ground station call to the ISS. Please note that on Echolink there are automatic breaks of 1.5 seconds in the audio transmission. These occur every 2.5 minutes during the event. Breaks on IRLP are manual and occur approximately after every third question. ** Contact times are approximate.
