An International Space Station school contact has been planned with participants at Lafayette Middle School, Lafayette, GA on 21 Sept. The event is scheduled to begin at approximately 15:03 UTC. The duration of the contact is approximately 9 minutes and 30 seconds. The contact will be direct between NA1SS and W4LMS. The contact should be audible over the U.S. state of Georgia and adjacent areas. Interested parties are invited to listen in on the 145.80 MHz downlink. The contact is expected to be conducted in English. LaFayette Middle School serves southern Walker County, Georgia. 80% of LMS students receive free or reduced meals. Currently 65% of Walker County students graduate, up from 58% 3 years ago, during which time Walker County Schools adopted the following mission statement: "It is the Mission of Walker County Schools to ensure all students graduate - Ready for College, Ready for Work, Ready for Life!" LaFayette Middle School has had an amateur radio club since 2007. Since it's inception, the Rambler Radio Club has had the goal to expose our students to other cultures, take them out of their current reality, and show them what could be possible through their personal education. This ARISS Contact will be a perfect fit for the WCS System mission statement and Rambler Radio's goal. We anticipate an audience of over 1,000 for our ARISS contact here at LaFayette Middle School. LMS is currently the third largest school in Walker County, Georgia, with an anticipated student population of 900 in grades 6-8. The local population of LaFayette is 8,000 with half of our students living in the city limits and the other half living in the outlying rural area. Participants will ask as many of the following questions as time allows: 1. What time zone do you use on the ISS? 2. What fuels the Space Station? 3. Does everyone there have a specific job? 4. Describe a normal day on the ISS. 5. How do you perform daily tasks like cooking, eating, and laundry on the Space Station? 6. Other than gravity, what are the differences between life in Space and life on Earth? 7. What landmarks on Earth can you see from space? 8. Between launch and re-entry which one scares you the most and why? 9. How has being in space changed your perspective of Earth and life on Earth? 10. What is the weirdest thing you have seen or experienced while in space? 11. What made you want to be an astronaut? 12. How do you exercise in space? 13. Not counting your training, how long does it take you to get to the International Space Station? 14. What is the interior temperature on board the International Space Station? 15. How do you deal with coughing and sneezing in space? 16. How do you deal with sickness on board? 17. How do you sleep in space? 18. Do you conserve resources such as water, electricity, etc. since you only have a limited amount? 19. Do you ever get claustrophobic while living on the ISS? 20. An International Space Station school contact has been planned with participants at Sunset Hills Elementary, San Diego, CA on 20 Sept. The event is scheduled to begin at approximately 17:24 UTC. The duration of the contact is approximately 9 minutes and 30 seconds. The contact will be direct between NA1SS and KI6LZN. The contact should be audible over California and adjacent areas. Interested parties are invited to listen in on the 145.80 MHz downlink. The contact is expected to be conducted in English. Sunset Hills Elementary School is a K-5 school in Northern San Diego. We opened in 1972 and have many families that are second generational "Seagulls". Our diverse student population of 440 students' encompasses almost 20 different languages. We pride ourselves on implementing a positive school wide climate where "Seagulls Soar and Character Counts!" Our slogan for the year is "Shooting for the Stars and Beyond." Prior to the ARISS event our PTA is hosting a family event, inviting families to "Come blast off to a new school year!" in which tables will be set up for students to learn more about the International Space Station using interactive presentations, and making arts and crafts. Our neighborhood high school HAMM radio club will have a booth to show our students what a HAMM radio is. We will have community members with telescopes set up for students to look through to catch a glimpse of constellations. Fourth grade students have researched life on the International Space Station and created a book to share with the younger students in the school. All students will continue to learn more about the International Space Station through the educational activities on the NASA website. All 3rd-5th grade students had the opportunity to audition to be a Space Ambassador for the day of the event. The duties of the Space Ambassadors will include: Speakers, Press Greeters, Photographers, and Videographers during the actual event. As one of our students shared about our upcoming ARISS event, "Speaking to an astronaut in outer space is truly a once in a life time opportunity!" Natalie,4th grade. Participants will ask as many of the following questions as time allows: 1. What do you eat? How do you eat and drink? How do you get your food? 2. How do you get fresh oxygen? What do you do when you run out of oxygen? 3. How much exercise do you do to stay healthy? How do you exercise? 4. Living in that small space, do you ever get angry at your partners? If so, how so you solve the problem? 5. How does it feel to live with zero gravity? 6. Does your body hurt when you go through the atmosphere? How does it feel going from earth to space? When you come back to earth does it feel differently? 7. In space, do you have sunrise and sunset? How do you keep track of time? Are your days longer or shorter? 8. Why did you decide to become an astronaut? 9. What do you do if you get sick in space? Do you get dizzy when the space station moves? Have you had any allergic reactions? 10. What are some of the dangers in space? Have you ever been in such a bad situation that you guys thought you wouldn't survive? 11. In space, are you closer to the sun? How does that feel? 12. What do you do when you are not working? What do you do for fun? 13. What planet do you think we will likely be able to live on in the future? 14. What type of experiments do you do? An International Space Station school contact has been planned with participants at Zespól Szkól Technicznych w Kole, Kolo, Poland on 19 Sept. The event is scheduled to begin at approximately 07:15 UTC. The duration of the contact is approximately 9 minutes and 30 seconds. The contact will be direct between OR4ISS and SP3PGZ. The contact should be audible over Poland and adjacent areas. Interested parties are invited to listen in on the 145.80 MHz downlink. The contact is expected to be conducted in English. Zespol Szkol Technicznych (Complex of Technical Schools, abr. ZST) in Kolo is a modern, dynamic and constantly developing school with more than 60 years tradition, and a well-qualified staff. We are one of the largest secondary schools in our region. Currently, we teach more than 1000 students between 16 and 20 years old. We regularly modernize our facilities with better equipment and by doing so we keep expanding our educational base to match contemporary teaching standards. The school itself is well equipped in computer hardware as we have got almost one hundred computers, majority of which are used by students and teachers during classes every day. Teachers and students have access to the library which also serves as a data bank containing information about our students' results and progress they make throughout their time at our school. The library also provides free access to a broadband internet connection for students and teachers alike. We equip our students with practical skills in IT, Environment Protection and Car Mechanics. Students of our school take new challenges very eagerly. In our work we utilize modern teaching techniques and encourage our students to participation in various projects such as ARISS school contact. Except participating in ARISS educational program we have just completed building an ECO-ROBOT, a small submarine-like drone with various spectrographic equipment on board and changeable head. We also promote care for the environment in our local community and run a carting club. ZST also has a tradition in the radio contact field. Our School Amateur Radio Club SP3PGZ was established in 1976 and since then it has been active on many radio bands. The main goals of the club are: promoting shortwave radio communication as a hobby for young people, cooperation in organizing local events, and taking part in competitions. How long can the ISS remain in orbit with only solar energy at its disposal? 3. Is it allowed to attach posters or photos of your favorite celebrities, family or anything else to the walls? 4. In what way is the ISS protected from solar flare radiation? 7. What can astronauts see from the Station's windows? 8. What special skills and abilities are required in order to take part in the mission? 9. What operating system do you use in the computers for research and controlling the station? 10. What works better in no-gravity environment - pen or pencil? 11. What is the temperature, pressure and air composition inside the station? 12. Has there ever been a case of sickness like a cold, aboard the station? If yes, how was it dealt with? 13. What are the key resources that the ISS needs for full functionality? 14. What schools do I have to attend, what languages do I need to learn and what should I target after school education to become an astronaut? 15. How much of free time do ISS members have during their stay on board? 16. How fast is your Internet connection and how does it work? 17. How does a cut in space look like and does it heal faster? 18. Amateur Radio on the International Space Station (ARISS) Status Report September 17, 2012 1. Upcoming School Contacts Zespól Szkól Technicznych w Kole, Kolo, Poland will participate in an Amateur Radio on the International Space Station (ARISS) contact on Wednesday, September 19 at 07:15 UTC. Besides learning about space, amateur radio and satellite tracking in the classroom, students are also attending lectures on astronautics, engineering and astronomy. They are involved with related hands-on activities and competitions, with the winners receiving the opportunity to question the ISS astronaut. In addition, the school is forming astronomy and amateur radio clubs for the youth. The event will be broadcast live via the internet on: http://live.arisspolska.info/ An Amateur Radio on the International Space Station (ARISS) contact has been planned for Sunset Hills Elementary School in San Diego, California on Thursday, September 20 at 17:24 UTC. Students are learning about the radio and space through age-appropriate hands-on activities. NASA education Web site materials are being used and guest speakers from the local Amateur Radio club will give a presentation to the students. Lafayette Middle School, La Fayette, Georgia is slated for an Amateur Radio on the International Space Station (ARISS) contact on Friday, September 21 at 15:03 UTC. The school will use the ARISS contact to promote the areas of Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics within its entire system. It hopes to arrange for Skype interviews with guests for the ARISS event: Dr. Rob Suggs and Dr. Bill Cooke of Marshall Space Flight Center in Huntsville, Alabama; Cristi Whitworth, Educational Director for Pisgah Astronomical Research Institute; and Dr. June Scobee Rodgers, Founding Chair of the Challenger Center at the University of Tennessee at Chattanooga. 2. Successful Contacts Held Students attending Maroochydore State School in Maroochydore, Queensland, Australia participated in an Amateur Radio on the International Space Station (ARISS) contact on Wednesday, September 12 via telebridge station VK4KHZ in Australia. Akihiko Hoshide, KE5DNI answered 14 questions of the students before the ISS went over the horizon. Approximately 40 students and guests were in attendance and the contact received coverage by radio, television and newspapers. The contact was integrated into a comprehensive space curriculum, with lessons focused on the Venus Transit, the Juno mission and the Curiosity mission. An ARISS contact was held between Joe Acaba, KE5DAR on the ISS and Marcelino Canino Canino Middle School in Dorado, Puerto Rico on Wednesday, September 12 via telebridge station K6DUE in Greenbelt, Maryland. The session was conducted in Spanish, with all 16 questions answered. The students are involved in a Microsatellite Hardware program through which they design, build, launch, track and retrieve their microsatellites with the assistance of many local amateur radio operators. The school, located in a rural area of Dorado, has an enrollment of 464 students of which 78% live below the poverty level and 26% receive special education services. On Thursday, September 13, Sunita Williams, KD5PLB spoke with students at the Gymnasium Unterrieden in Sindelfingen, Germany through an ARISS contact and answered their space-related questions. One hundred people showed up for the event, including 4 media outlets. The audio was broadcasted via 2 amateur radio relays. The contact was integrated into several other amateur radio activities which included the students preparing for entry level amateur radio licenses and building a satellite receiving station. Video has been posted: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=u_uOnhrsOvg A second ARISS contact that Akihiko Hoshide, KE5DNI took part in last week was with children at the NASA Goddard Space Flight Center in Greenbelt, Maryland on Thursday, September 13. The students had 21 questions answered during the ISS pass, and as the coordinating person at Goddard had previously asked another astronaut for answers to the questions, the remaining students still received "official" answers to their questions. Nearly 100 people were in attendance, with 4 media cameras recording the event. Prince George's County Community TV reported on the event. Daytona Beach Amateur Radio Association supported the school in this endeavor. The contact was integrated into lessons on radio waves, electricity, communications, geography and languages. 3. Astronaut Training Status Gregory Wiseman, KF5LKT took part in a basic operations training session on Wednesday, September 12. He is slated to fly with the Expedition 40 crew in May 2014. 4. ARRL Articles on ARISS The American Radio Relay League (ARRL) carried two articles related to ARISS in its ARRL Letter on September 13. The first item covers the return of Expedition 31/32 crew members to Earth. The second talks about the ARRL convention to be held in California on October 12-14. Astronaut Lee Morin will be a guest speaker at the event and ARISS member Kenneth Ransom, N5VHO will also attend. For US schools to have an ARISS contact, they must fill out a proposal, submit it to NASA, and see if they are approved or not. Once a school is approved and put on the list, an ARISS mentor will be assigned to assist the school. NASA will have two open windows a year for schools to submit a proposal. The window for contacts during the second half of 2012 has already closed. Look for the window for first half 2013 contacts later this year. You must go through NASA to get the proposal material. Several contacts will be available on Echolink and IRLP this week: 1) Maroochydore State School - Australia - 12 Septemner at 0703 UTC 2) Marcelino Canino Canino Middle School - 12 September at 1729 UTC These will be telebridges by VK4KHZ and K6DUE respectively. The DIRECT contact at Burns Sci-Tech Charter School in Florida, USA at 1821 UTC is supposed to be available on the web at: https://new.livestream.com/accounts/1446029/burnstech If the audio quality is good I will relay it via the usual Echolink and IRLP systems. As a reminder audio from the contact will be fed into the: EchoLink *AMSAT* (101377) and *JK1ZRW* (277208) servers IRLP Node 9010 Discovery Reflector Audio on Echolink is generally transmitted around 20 minutes prior to the contact taking place so that you can hear some of the preparation that occurs. IRLP will begin just prior to the ground station call to the ISS. Please note that on Echolink there are automatic breaks of 1.5 seconds in the audio transmission. These occur every 2.5 minutes during the event. Breaks on IRLP are manual and occur approximately after every third question. ** Contact times are approximate. An International Space Station school contact has been planned with participants at Burns Sci-Tech Charter School, Oak Hill, FL on 13 Sept. The event is scheduled to begin at approximately 18:21 UTC. The duration of the contact is approximately 9 minutes and 30 seconds. The contact will be direct between NA1SS and KK4KTJ. The contact should be audible over the eastern U.S. and adjacent areas. Interested parties are invited to listen in on the 145.80 MHz downlink. The contact is expected to be conducted in English. Burns Science and Technology Charter School is a K-8 public charter school operating within the Volusia County School District. It is a tuition free school, with an open admission policy. It is located in a rural area in the town of Oak Hill, Florida. The school is a STEM school, offering core curriculum, with emphasis on science, technology, and 21st century literacies. The school has a strong belief that in order to prepare students for success in the 21st century, today's learners must be able to think critically and creatively, work collaboratively, and master an ever growing arena of skills. The student body is made up of 382 students from all over the Volusia County area. The school has 20 classroom teachers, four special area teachers, and one teaching assistant. The school's mission is to cultivate learners and leaders who are inspired, able, and prepared to make a positive difference in the world. Through collaborative efforts with the school, NASA representatives, and the Daytona Beach Amateur Radio Association, the school is able to house a ham radio club. Amateur operators teaming with school personnel developed, organized, and planned the ARISS contact for September, 2012. Overall about thirty operators are involved in different areas of the activity: loaning equipment, planning strategy, setting up the primary and secondary stations, putting up and taking down antenna assembly, working the activity and taking down equipment to return to owners. These upstanding hams think it is an honor to participate in these activities. Participants will ask as many of the following questions as time allows: 1. Do you keep your food cold? 2. What do you miss the most about the earth? 3. What food do you miss the most while in space? 4. What is the brightest city you can see from space and how do you know it is that city? 5. What is one project you are working on now? 6. How do you get oxygen in the ISS? 7. Does being in space affect your metabolism? 8. When you are on a spacewalk were you ever afraid? 9. What do you have Robonaut 2 doing on the ISS now? 10. Do you have a refrigerator? 11. How do you take a bath in space? 12. I'm in the second grade. What do I need to learn so I could become an astronaut? 13. What planets can you see from the ISS? 14. What did you learn in space that surprised you? 15. Do you ever get claustrophobic and if so, what can you do about it? 16. Are you hungrier or less hungry in space? 17. We have our own ham radio club, when is the best time to make an unscheduled contact with the ISS? 18. Do you think that mankind or families will ever be able to live in space? 19. How do you recycle water to drink on the ISS? 20. Who or what inspired you to become an astronaut?
