Please join us in listening to the ISS contact with participants at the *Ilan Ramon Foundation, Weizmann Institute of Science in Rehovot, Israel*on Sunday February 3rd. AOS is approximately 09:01 UTC - Echolink & Web transmission will begin about 20 minutes prior to AOS The duration of the contact is approximately 9 minutes and 30 seconds. The contact will be a telebridge between NA1SS and K6DUE in Greenbelt, Maryland, USA. The contact is expected to be conducted in English. Students of Leyada-The Hebrew University Secondary School in Israel will participate in this ARISS contact. This event is a complement to the variety of events held annually in memory of Ilan Ramon, Israel’s first astronaut. Among the students participating in the event are the winners of the Space Olympics hosted by the Ilan Ramon Foundation. For the competition the students have been working for the past 3 months on plans for the construction of a space platform designated for satellite repair (as the main goal) and a guest house in space (as a secondary goal). Approximately 200 students will be in attendance of the event. Fenruary 1st marks the 10 year anniversary of the loss of Shuttle Columbia of which Ilan was a crewmember. Audio from this contact will be fed into the: EchoLink *AMSAT* (101377) and *JK1ZRW* (277208) servers IRLP Node 9010 Discovery Reflector Streaming Audio at: https://sites.google.com/site/arissaudio/ Audio on Echolink & web stream is generally transmitted around 20 minutes prior to the contact taking place so that you can hear some of the preparation that occurs. IRLP will begin just prior to the ground station call to the ISS. Please note that on Echolink there are automatic breaks of 1.5 seconds in the audio transmission. These occur every 2.5 minutes during the event. Breaks on IRLP are manual and occur approximately after every third question. ** Contact times are approximate. January 22, 2013 To All RADIO AMATEURS BID: $ANS-022.01 On or about 20 January 2013, AMSAT-NA's main web site www.amsat.org was compromised by an attacker, with the contents of the supporting database, including non-public information, posted on other publicly available web sites. It is likely that the attacker gained enough access to the site to post arbitrary and possibly illegal content, so out of an abundance of caution the main site was shut down. Neither the AMSAT store nor the Fox project web site were affected by this breach. Mail services remain operational. The main site was developed roughly 10 years ago by a AMSAT volun- teers under a more benign Internet threat environment. The team that built that site is no longer associated with AMSAT, so work has been underway over the last several months to move to a modern, maintain- able, secure infrastructure. An International Space Station school contact has been planned with participants at Saint Rose Elementary School, Saint John, New Brunswick, Canada on 17 Jan. The event is scheduled to begin at approximately 13:40 UTC. The duration of the contact is approximately 9 minutes and 30 seconds. The contact will be direct between NA1SS and VE9LC. The contact should be audible over portions of Canada. Interested parties are invited to listen in on the 145.80 MHz downlink. The contact is expected to be conducted in English. Saint Rose School has been excitedly preparing for their upcoming communication with International Space Station Canadian Commander, Chris Hadfield. In preparation for this educational event, students in grades three to five took part in a Saint John Astronomy Club presentation by Kurt Nason. November saw our kick-off assembly with special guest Greg D'Entremont. At this assembly, SRS students met their ten Barnhill Memorial School partners who will be asking Commander Hadfield student created questions. In the month of December, each class will be working on space projects linked to curriculum outcomes. Some are classroom projects linked to the K-2 curriculum, You and Your World, while some students in grades 3-5 are working on Science connections individually, in small group, or as a class. Event day will see some of the projects highlighted. Our final lead-up event of this calendar year will be on December 17th when students enjoy a presentation by UNBSJ Space Studies Professor, Phil Backman. The "Saint Rose School Space Walk" will take place on January 9th. Students will walk from classroom to classroom to observe projects, ask questions of project creators, and possibly select those projects being highlighted on event day. The week culminates with the Science East Planetarium in the gymnasium that all students will visit throughout the day for class presentations. Participants will ask as many of the following questions as time allows: 1. What is it like to live in the Space Station and who else lives there with you? 2. What is the best thing you've seen in space? 3. Can you use cellphones in space? 4. What does a solar eclipse look like from the Space Station? 5. How can the Space Station orbit the Earth in 90 minutes? 6. Does it get cold in space at night and how cold? 7. How long does the oxygen supply last on the Space Station? 8. How long does it take to get to space from Earth? 9. What is your favorite part of being an astronaut? 10. Why did you want to be an astronaut and why? 11. What Earth landmarks can you see from space? 12. What does the continent of Antarctica look like from Space? 13. What do you do for entertainment for long periods of time in such small quarter? 14. After living in a microgravity environment do you find it hard to walk when you return to Earth? 15. We have read that the ISS is about the size of 5 NHL rinks. Have you ever gotten lost? 16. How do you think living on the ISS will influence your song writing? 17. How do you feel about being the first Canadian ever to command the ISS? 18. If given the choice would you prefer living in space or on Earth? 19. On the Space Shuttle what happens to the external fuel tank once it's jettisoned? 20. An International Space Station school contact has been planned with participants at Royal Canadian Air Cadets- Newfoundland Cadet Detachment, St. John's, Newfoundland, Canada on 12 Jan. The event is scheduled to begin at approximately 14:40 UTC. The duration of the contact is approximately 9 minutes and 30 seconds. The contact will be direct between NA1SS and VO1BZM. The contact should be audible over Eastern Canada and adjacent areas. Interested parties are invited to listen in on the 145.80 MHz downlink. The contact is expected to be conducted in English. In preparation for the upcoming ARISS Contact Event the cadets of 515 Air Cadets along with the local Air Cade Squadrons are focusing in on the aerospace portion of their training program. The Squadrons training staff have added in extra classes in this subject area including lesson focused around various Canadian Astronauts to help familiarize the cadets with Chris Hadfield's career and background. We have also encouraged the cadets in the squadrons to check out Col Hadfield's Facebook page and Twitter feed along with looking at various websites with lots of information about the International Space Station. We have canvassed the cadets over the last few weeks to develop the questions they will get to ask and in the coming weeks we plan to have a practice run through with those selected to ask questions during the contact event. Everyone involved in this event is very enthusiastic and looking forward to the opportunity to use this as once in a life time learning event. Broadband Preamps

The initial run of broadband preamps have been sold. We expect to have more available relatively soon. The first few will be used to cover existing orders. When they are available for purchase, they will be on the AMSAT store, and announcements will be made though AMSAT media. An International Space Station school contact has been planned with participants at Missoula Family YMCA, Missoula, MT on 08 Jan. The event is scheduled to begin at approximately 16:14 UTC. The contact should be audible over portions of the Midwest U.S. Interested parties are invited to listen in on the 145.80 MHz downlink. The contact is expected to be conducted in English. Missoula Family YMCA will be hosting an ARISS contact this coming January 8, 2013 at 16:14 UTC at Target Range School in Missoula, Montana. Students will have a chance to talk to the crew aboard the ISS with the assistance of the Hellgate Amateur Radio Club and ask a pool of questions generated from the student winners of an essay contest. The students represent grades 3 - 9 and attend the following Missoula county schools; Target Range, Loyola, St. Josesph's, Russell, Hellgate Elementary, Lowell and Chief Charlo. The Missoula Family YMCA has been committed to incorporating academic programs to help students figure out their place in the world. We think of the ARISS contact as the real world application of our students' studies of science, technology, engineering and math (STEM). Our participation in the ARISS event can help us achieve this goal and continue to excite the interest in our youth and to promote NASA STEM activities. Missoula is located along the Clark Fork and Bitterroot rivers in Western Montana and at the convergence of five mountain ranges, thus is often described as being the "Hub of Five Valleys". The 2010 Census put the population of Missoula at 66,788 and has been the second largest city in Montana. Saint-Maur-des-Fossés is a small city (77,000 people) located at about 15 km South-East of PARIS, separated from the capital by the large Vincennes Forest, and located on the top of a loop formed by the river Marne. The name of the city is inspired from the Chateau of Saint Maur, which was frequently visited by the queen Marie de Medicis in the 16th Century. The school Les Muriers is educating about 500 children in 17 classrooms, aged from 8 to 11 and preparing their access to Middle school. The children's of a classroom of 22 (CM2/ 5th grade) are developing with their teacher, the dream of a direct contact, via ham radio, with an astronaut of the ISS. This year, the children are studying the life in space, working on the comprehension of the Space Station and are participating to science and ham-radio activities organized by the Radio-club station of St-Maur (F6KMX). The event is scheduled to begin at approximately 18:54 UTC. The duration of the contact is approximately 9 minutes and 30 seconds. The contact will be direct between NA1SS and VE1CPA. The contact should be audible over portions of Canada and the eastern U.S. Interested parties are invited to listen in on the 145.80 MHz downlink. The contact is expected to be conducted in English. The Charles P. Allen High School ARISS project was initiated shortly after formal acceptance of the project proposal in mid-February. The project was formally announced to the students and faculty via a specially prepared video. Students and staff launched a dedicated Web site for the project that includes links and project information. Members of the Halifax Amateur Radio Club visited the school in May to talk about ARISS and the benefits of setting up an amateur radio club in the school. They presented Principal Stephanie Bird with the school's new call sign, VE1CPA. Four students are enrolled in a Basic Radio Operators course being offered by the HARC. Final planning and preparation for our January contact is well under way. A prominent Canadian with ties to the Canadian Space Program has accepted our invitation to appear as the guest speaker for the contact. A video profile of Chris Hadfield is currently being produced and will be shown at the contact event. Invitations have been sent to several special guests and a significant media coverage of the event is anticipated. Participants will ask as many of the following questions as time allows: 1. What is the best experience you have had while in space? 2. What type of music do you enjoy listening to or playing on the ISS? 3. Is any consideration given to an astronaut's cultural background or culinary tastes in the preparation of the ISS dietary rations? 4.
