History Channel is airing the show for the first time Wednesday October 23 at 22:00 EDT or Thursday October 24 at 02:00 UTC. Below is word from Canadian ARISS mentor Steve McFarlane VE3TBD about this: Wednesday Oct 23, 2013 – Season Premiere of Reality TV Show Ice Pilots will feature the ARISS program – Amateur Radio on The International Space Station. I/we do not know the full details of what will be included in this episode but we understand a Radio contact with Chris Hadfield will be shown that involves the Canadian mentors that undertake and support these events all across Canada. This team, are made up of Teacher Lori McFarlane, technical coordination Claude Lacasse and program mentor Steve McFarlane VE3TBD all located in Ottawa but were on site during this contact from Hay river. Remotely located but very much a part of this event include Teacher Mentor Brian Jackson VE6JBJ in Calgary and fellow Canadian mentor Wayne Harasimovitch VE1WPH located in Halifax. As mentioned, exact content of the show is not known but we do know a production team from Omni productions recorded the entire presentation and event at the Hay River Public School near Yellowknife. As well, Omni productions did receive the entire video from the ISS showing Chris Hadfield answering questions during the same event. Other video including setup, meeting the show “stars” etc., was recorded but again, we are not certain of the inclusions on the show. All audio during the event was made available and Omni productions have a copy of that – this includes the Telebridge track. All we can hope is that ARISS is well represented and the program receives some well-deserved recognition. I was alerted that this is a reality TV show and almost anything can be broadcast. We are at the mercy of the producers and editors of the show – as they indicated to us – this is about Buffalo Airlines. My final comment to the producer, this show and the space program are linked in ways that are sometimes difficult to understand but it is clear that early aviation pioneers from all over the world, which Buffalo epitomizes, led to what we know today as the Space Program – ARISS is about making our youth believe anything is possible so when they say this is about Buffalo Airlines what they are really saying, this is about how we started our journey to the stars. An International Space Station school contact has been planned with participants at Wallingford STEM Academy/Town of Wallingford, Wallingford, CT on 31 Oct. The event is scheduled to begin at approximately 15:45 UTC. The duration of the contact is approximately 9 minutes and 30 seconds. The contact will be direct between NA1SS and K1SEZ. The contact should be audible over the east coast of the U.S. and adjacent areas. Interested parties are invited to listen in on the 145.80 MHz downlink. The contact is expected to be conducted in English. Wallingford STEM Academy is a community based and family oriented organization that excites students about science, technology, engineering and mathematics. This program, previously known as the Young Astronaut Club of Wallingford and founded in 2000, has been providing STEM enrichment for students in grades 4 through 8 for over thirteen years through Wallingford Youth and Social Services. The Wallingford STEM Academy is a collaborative partnership between the Spanish Community of Wallingford (SCOW), the Town of Wallingford Youth and Social Services Department (WYSS), the Wallingford Education Association (WEA). STEM Academy branches in Wallingford, and Hamden, are the flagship programs for CEA’s STEM Education Initiative. We currently serve the Spanish Community of Wallingford (SCOW) and the general population. 40% of our STEM Enrichment Academy is comprised of students from the Spanish community and 40 % of our students are girls interested in STEM education. Our weekly meetings are conducted at the Spanish Community of Wallingford Great Room and in our STEM Education Classroom next to SCOW. Since 2005, a companion project to Wallingford STEM Enrichment Academy is the Wallingford Family Science and STEM Night Series. At least twice a month, we organize and implement family oriented Science and STEM Family Nights in Wallingford. These events range from evening programs, daytime vacation programs, hands-on investigations, assembly style programs, and night sky observations. The purpose of this organization is to deepen student, and family, understanding of STEM concepts as a compliment to an existing inquiry based STEM curriculum in Wallingford. Our major funders for both STEM Academy and Wallingford Family STEM Nights are the Wallingford Rotary Club’s Wallingford Foundation, 3M Charitable Contributions and the Connecticut Education Association. An International Space Station school contact has been planned with participants at Kopernik Observatory & Science Center (KOSC), Vestal, NY on 30 Oct. The Kopernik Observatory & Science Center (KOSC) is a non-profit learning institution that promotes interdisciplinary education in the fields of Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics (STEM). Through its classes, events and programs, KOSC’s multigenerational approach emphasizes experiential, engaged and active learning as a model of STEM education in our region. Founded in 1973, KOSC has offered hundred of thousands of students of all ages the opportunity to learn about their world and the universe surrounding them. Kopernik’s resources include three permanent telescopes, a heliostat, weather station, three classrooms, photography lab, computer lab and amateur radio station. It also offers a robust outreach program where its educators go to schools to bring its programs directly into the classroom. KOSC has partnered with Binghamton High School, in Binghamton NY, to offer their students a series of classes and labs on topics such as radio communication, satellite orbits, astronomy and life on the International Space Station (ISS). Those classes and labs will help the students understand and prepare for the capstone event: a direct radio contact between the Amateur Radio Station at KOSC and an astronaut on the ISS. During that event those students will have the opportunity to directly ask an astronaut on the ISS a wide range of questions about life on the ISS and Space Exploration. Participants will ask as many of the following questions as time allows: 1. What inspired you to become an astronaut? 2. How do the stars look from space? Are they brighter or do they look the same? 3. What do you love the most about being in space that you never expected? 4. While in space is it more stressful physically or mentally? 5. Where do you see human exploration of space going in the next 50 years? 6. Tell us about your training/education to become an astronaut? 7. Did you have any fears/concerns when you first went to the ISS? 8. What do you miss most about being on earth that you never expected to miss at all? 9. What happens if you become ill on the space station? 10. What challenges do you find in living in 0g environment? 11. What is the food like on ISS? 12. How do you go to the bathroom and where does it go? Is it uncomfortable to go to the bathroom in space? 13 How much of the natural disasters taking place on Earth, such as forest fires in California or flooding in Colorado are visible from space? 14 On the ISS have you see or witnessed anything particularly peculiar? 15 Do you have any free time? This team, are made up of Teacher Lori McFarlane, technical coordination Claude Lacasse and program mentor Steve McFarlane VE3TBD all located in Ottawa but were on site during this contact from Hay river. Remotely located but very much a part of this event include Teacher Mentor Brian Jackson VE6JBJ in Calgary and fellow Canadian mentor Wayne Harasimovitch VE1WPH located in Halifax. As mentioned, exact content of the show is not known but we do know a production team from Omni productions recorded the entire presentation and event at the Hay River Public School near Yellowknife. As well, Omni productions did receive the entire video from the ISS showing Chris Hadfield answering questions during the same event. An International Space Station school contact has been planned with participants at Convitto Nazionale "Vittorio Emanuele II" di Roma, Rome, Italy and Pediatrico Giovanni XXIII, Bari, Italy on 26 Oct. The event is scheduled to begin at approximately 11:55 UTC. The duration of the contact is approximately 9 minutes and 30 seconds. The contact will be a direct and telebridge between IR0ISS and IK0USO. The contact should be audible over Italy and adjacent areas. Interested parties are invited to listen in on the 145.80 MHz downlink. The contact is expected to be conducted in English. The Convitto Nazionale is a State co-educational boarding and day school, with both residential and semi-residential facilities, located in Rome. Below is word from Canadian ARISS mentor Steve McFarlane VE3TBD about this: Wednesday Oct 23, 2013 – Season Premiere of Reality TV Show Ice Pilots will feature the ARISS program – Amateur Radio on The International Space Station. I/we do not know the full details of what will be included in this episode but we understand a Radio contact with Chris Hadfield will be shown that involves the Canadian mentors that undertake and support these events all across Canada. This team, are made up of Teacher Lori McFarlane, technical coordination Claude Lacasse and program mentor Steve McFarlane VE3TBD all located in Ottawa but were on site during this contact from Hay river. Remotely located but very much a part of this event include Teacher Mentor Brian Jackson VE6JBJ in Calgary and fellow Canadian mentor Wayne Harasimovitch VE1WPH located in Halifax. As mentioned, exact content of the show is not known but we do know a production team from Omni productions recorded the entire presentation and event at the Hay River Public School near Yellowknife. As well, Omni productions did receive the entire video from the ISS showing Chris Hadfield answering questions during the same event. Other video including setup, meeting the show “stars” etc., was recorded but again, we are not certain of the inclusions on the show. All audio during the event was made available and Omni productions have a copy of that – this includes the Telebridge track. All we can hope is that ARISS is well represented and the program receives some well-deserved recognition. I was alerted that this is a reality TV show and almost anything can be broadcast. We are at the mercy of the producers and editors of the show – as they indicated to us – this is about Buffalo Airlines. My final comment to the producer, this show and the space program are linked in ways that are sometimes difficult to understand but it is clear that early aviation pioneers from all over the world, which Buffalo epitomizes, led to what we know today as the Space Program – ARISS is about making our youth believe anything is possible so when they say this is about Buffalo Airlines what they are really saying, this is about how we started our journey to the stars. An International Space Station school contact has been planned with participants at IPSSEOA, Castellana Grotte and Liceo Classico e Linguistico C. Sylos, Bitonto, Italy on 23 Oct. The event is scheduled to begin at approximately 12:43 UTC. The duration of the contact is approximately 9 minutes and 30 seconds. The contact will be direct between IR0ISS and IZ7RTN. The contact should be audible over Italy. Interested parties are invited to listen in on the 145.80 MHz downlink. The contact is expected to be conducted in Italian. The School IPSSEOA in Castellana Grotte is a Secondary High School for Tourism: Hotel and Catering. It serves the educational needs of the town because it is the biggest Secondary High School in town. It caters for boys and girls, aged from 14 to 19 years. Located in one of the region's tourist areas, it is in the centre of the pleasant town of Castellana Grotte, in the south-east of the APULIA region, south-east of Italy.In its Curriculum the school focus on: Catering and Hotel Reception Communication, Catering and Hotel Reception Competence, Media Communication, the Environment, Food and beverage critical analysis, Science activities in Food and beverage lab. The school has three locations, five computer rooms, a scientific laboratory of Food Science, 48 classrooms. At present there are 1000 students on roll and they attend the regular class daily, from 8.00 am to 1.00 pm. Our school "Liceo Classico e Linguistico C. Sylos " is in Bitonto , a town near Bari in Puglia, south-east of Italy. It is divided in two courses: the Classics, specialized in classical languages as Latin and Greek, and the Linguistic which is specialized in modern languages as English , French, Spanish and German. The students who attend our school are about 600, and they come, above all, from Bitonto but also from near towns. Our students are from 14 to 19 years old. We do lots of extra activities in the afternoon, so the school is always opened until 8 pm. Our lyceum is located in the historical centre of Bitonto, it's an old building which was built in the 17th century as a monastery . From monastery it became a school at the end of 19th century and a lot of important people in our town have been educated here. Participants will ask as many of the following questions (translated) as time allows: 1. What kind of food is consumed on board the ISS? 2. How do you organize in case of emergency or illness of an astronaut? 3. How do physical training on board the ISS? 4. What kind of experiments is doing on board the ISS? 5. It's true that some clothes, used on board, may be adjustable (size change)? 6 . Did you want to go outside the ISS after your two extra vehicular activity? 7. How is resupplied the ISS? 8. What is the perception of time on board the ISS? 9. How was built the ISS? 10. How long does the preparation for a mission on the ISS? 11. Do you need to replenish vitamins, minerals and other than the power supply on board? 12. What activities are you doing on board the ISS? 13. The foods you eat in space have an expiry date? 14. Is planning a mission to Mars. How are proceeding with the preparation? 15. There are Italian companies that produce food for astronauts? 16. The Comprehensive School "Camaiore" 3, with a school population of about 900 students, is fully included in the town of "Camaiore", and consists of the complexes of "Capezzano" Childhood, Primary and Middle school, "Vado" Childhood and Primary school, "Frati" Primary school and "Santa Lucia" Childhood. The territory of Camaiore is articulated by the Apuan mountains to the sea, an environment in the foothill slopes towards the Versilia coast. The schools of the Comprehensive Institute welcomed roughly the population of the central area, characterized by a large plan and some fraction on the first hill. An International Space Station school contact has been planned with participants at Ecole Francaise Jacques Prevert, Saly, Senegal on 14 Oct. The event is scheduled to begin at approximately 16:31 UTC. The duration of the contact is approximately 9 minutes and 30 seconds. The contact will be direct between OR4ISS and 6V7SPACE. The contact should be audible over Senegal and adjacent areas. Interested parties are invited to listen in on the 145.80 MHz downlink. The contact is expected to be conducted in English. Jacques Prévert, a private mixed French Primary and Secondary school (aged 3 to 18) located in Saly, Senegal, is now destined to become the biggest French Lycée outside of Dakar due to the remarkable growth and development of both the school and the region during the past 10 years. Located in West Africa's largest and best known tourist resort, the school's fast expanding catchment area extends out and beyond to the site of the future international airport in the country's new economic development zone which has recently been linked up by motorway with the capital. The ambitious teaching and achievement levels coupled with an open-school cultural policy targeting both Senegalese and international partnerships within the framework of the French overseas network of schools (AEFE), combine to enrich and enhance the quality of the school's educational offer. During the past school year of 2012-2013, the amateur radio contact project has already afforded a major opportunity for trans-disciplinary preparation and topical research and learning about Space and the ISS for each class in the school. Indeed, this teaching project belongs to one of the priority guidelines of the Current General School Project « Opening up to the outside world » founded upon the aim to encourage pupils to discover and open up to other people and more generally to the realities of the outside world. The project originally intended for Secondary school pupils (6th, 7th, 8th, 9th and 10th grade) has involved practically all the classes at Jacques Prévert, due to the numerous exhibitions and projects developed and presented by pupils and actions carried out with the Primary school. Participants will ask as many of the following questions as time allows: 1. How do you control your body movements in weightlessness? 2. How are you able to keep your sense of time without the rhythm of daylight and night-time? 3. What made you decide to become an astronaut? 4. Has your body grown longer since you arrived on board the ISS? 5. Can solar wind expose astronauts to any specific dangers when they operate outside the station? 6. In case of illness or injury, can the astronauts receive medical treatment or be evacuated? 7. Can weightlessness become tiresome in the long run? 8. Do you have time to relax with any leisure activities? 9. Has your outlook on the world changed since you have been in space? 10. How long will it take you to be able to walk properly again once back on the earth? 11. What would you do if a comet or a meteorite was heading directly towards the ISS? 12. What influence does your state of mind have upon social behavior on board the ISS? 13. What are the most common and most worrying problems that can occur on board the ISS? 14. When you get back to earth, do you think your view towards life will have changed? 15. Can you transmit warning messages if your instruments predict the formation of a natural disaster somewhere on the Earth? 16. What are the requirements to become an astronaut? 17. The contact should be audible over Malaysia and adjacent areas. Interested parties are invited to listen in on the 145.80 MHz downlink. The contact is expected to be conducted in English. Our first ARISS contact was made in 2007 when, Malaysia's first Astronaut Shiekh Muzapher went on board ISS. We made 5 direct contacts when, some 80 school children to talked to him and asked questions. Since then it has become highly sought after yearly event which is tied up with the Prime Minister's Space Challenge Trophy. This year 2013 we would be making our 8th yearly contact. Since the schools do not have ground stations, they make use of Satellite Ground Station at National Planetarium established in 1995 under the call sign of 9M2RPN. The schools are the nurseries to produce future astronauts and space scientists. The forthcoming contact in October, 2013 provides the hands on experience and the seeding operation for tomorrow's space scientists. Participants will ask as many of the following questions as time allows: 1. How far do you have to go to escape gravity? 2. What is the escape velocity to reach ISS? 3. When you have achieved orbit what is the first thing that you do? 4. Is it hard to eat in space? 5. How does it feel to float in space? 6. How does one get treated in case of sudden sickness in space? 7. If there is air leak in ISS what emergency action would be taken? 8. Can you weigh yourself in weightlessness? 9. Do you sweat in space? 10. Can you grow seeds in space? 11. Can you see other satellites from the ISS? 12. What time zone do you observe in space? 13. How many sun rises and sun sets you see in space? 14. How often you get to speak to your families in space? 15. How is garbage disposed in space? 16. How do astronauts train for launch, orbit and reentry? 17. How would a candle burn in space? 18. Can you blow your nose in space? 19. If you sneeze in space do you float backwards? 20. Can you see stars in daytime when you are in space?
