An International Space Station school contact has been planned with participants at Rancho Romero Elementary School, Alamo, CA on 13 Nov. The event is scheduled to begin at approximately 19:44 UTC. The duration of the contact is approximately 9 minutes and 30 seconds. The contact will be direct between NA1SS and KJ6TWN. The contact should be audible over the west coast of the U.S. and adjacent areas. Interested parties are invited to listen in on the 145.80 MHz downlink. The contact is expected to be conducted in English. Rancho Romero Elementary School ("Rancho") serves a population of 10,000 in Alamo, California, about 25 miles east of San Francisco. Rancho Romero is committed to STEM education and is working with alumna and licensed amateur radio operator Rebecca Rubsamen to install a permanent satellite communications station in the Rancho science lab. The satellite ground station will provide a laboratory environment where students and faculty can explore concepts from basic orbital mechanics and basic radio theory. The Rancho satellite station is being specifically designed to be accessible over the internet by partner schools in our larger community who lack the resources to have this type of equipment available on their site. Rancho Romero will be working with other schools in its network to encourage faculty make use of this link to access the satellite station for classroom demonstrations at their campuses by accessing one of the many orbiting amateur radio satellites. Pre-contact activities have featured presentations by Camilla SDO, NASA's mascot for the Solar Dynamics Observatory and retired astronaut James Van Hoften who will talk about manned space flight. Participants will ask as many of the following questions as time allows: 1. How much were you allowed to bring with you for your 6 month stay on the ISS? 2. What is your specific job as a crew member? 3. What kind of experiments do you do, and which one has been your favorite? 4. Are there any animals (including insects) on board? 5. How do you recycle water? 6. As a child, were you very interested in science? 7. How many minutes per day do you need to exercise to keep your bones strong? 8. What are the long-term effects of microgravity? 9. How do you keep track of what day it is? 10. How do you take care of daily housekeeping chores, like doing laundry and taking out the trash? 11. How does Earth look from space, and do you have a favorite view? 12. How do you sleep in the space station, and is it comfortable? 13. How do the docking ports on the ISS work? 14. Does your heart beat faster or slower in space? 15. How do you communicate with family and friends at home? 16. How do you store food on the ISS, and do you ever get fresh fruit & veggies? 17. What are your sources of entertainment on the ISS? 18. How did you feel when the rocket to the ISS took off? 19. What is your favorite moment in space so far? 20. What do you miss the most from Earth? I/we do not know the full details of what will be included in this episode but we understand a Radio contact with Chris Hadfield will be shown that involves the Canadian mentors that undertake and support these events all across Canada. This team, are made up of Teacher Lori McFarlane, technical coordination Claude Lacasse and program mentor Steve McFarlane VE3TBD all located in Ottawa but were on site during this contact from Hay river. Remotely located but very much a part of this event include Teacher Mentor Brian Jackson VE6JBJ in Calgary and fellow Canadian mentor Wayne Harasimovitch VE1WPH located in Halifax. As mentioned, exact content of the show is not known but we do know a production team from Omni productions recorded the entire presentation and event at the Hay River Public School near Yellowknife. As well, Omni productions did receive the entire video from the ISS showing Chris Hadfield answering questions during the same event. Other video including setup, meeting the show “stars” etc., was recorded but again, we are not certain of the inclusions on the show. All audio during the event was made available and Omni productions have a copy of that – this includes the Telebridge track. All we can hope is that ARISS is well represented and the program receives some well-deserved recognition. I was alerted that this is a reality TV show and almost anything can be broadcast. We are at the mercy of the producers and editors of the show – as they indicated to us – this is about Buffalo Airlines. My final comment to the producer, this show and the space program are linked in ways that are sometimes difficult to understand but it is clear that early aviation pioneers from all over the world, which Buffalo epitomizes, led to what we know today as the Space Program – ARISS is about making our youth believe anything is possible so when they say this is about Buffalo Airlines what they are really saying, this is about how we started our journey to the stars. An International Space Station school contact has been planned with participants at Cradle of Aviation Museum, Garden City, NY on 04 Nov. The event is scheduled to begin at approximately 14:24 UTC. The duration of the contact is approximately 9 minutes and 30 seconds. The contact will be a telebridge between IR0ISS and IK1SLD. The contact should be audible over Italy and adjacent areas. Interested parties are invited to listen in on the 145.80 MHz downlink. The contact is expected to be conducted in English. The Cradle of Aviation Museum, (CAM) located in Garden City; New York was opened in 2002 and is one of the premier aerospace museums in the nation. The mission of the museum is to inspire future generations with the spirit of discovery through the exploration of air and space technologies, to encourage students to consider careers in science, technology, engineering, and math (STEM) while heightening the public’s awareness, understanding, and appreciation and preservation of Long Island’s role in the history and development of aviation and space technology. Our museum is home to the first magnet academy to open on Long Island. Opened in 2008, The Magnet Academy at the Cradle of Aviation has provided selected underserved high school students from several local districts who are interested in mathematics and science the unique opportunity to develop academic success through exposure to an accelerated curriculum that includes a "physics-first" science model (freshman students), mathematics, robotics, aeronautics, astronomy, and history. Participants will ask as many of the following questions as time allows: 1. Can you describe what it was like the first time you encountered microgravity in space? How difficult was it to adapt to the microgravity environment on the ISS? 2. Was there anything that your training did not prepare you for on your mission? Were there any unexpected surprises once you arrived on the ISS? 3. What was your training like for this mission? How different was it from the reality on the ISS? 4. What sort of exercises do you do in order to stay healthy? 5. Do you expect your stay in space to affect your health once you return to Earth? 6. Have you noticed any physical changes as you spend more time on the ISS? 7. What is the most difficult part of your job on board the ISS? What is the most fun? 8. An International Space Station school contact has been planned with participants at Warren County Technical School, Washington, NJ on 04 Nov. The event is scheduled to begin at approximately 14:08 UTC. The duration of the contact is approximately 9 minutes and 30 seconds. The contact will be direct between NA1SS and KC2WT. The contact should be audible over the east coast of the U.S. and adjacent areas. Interested parties are invited to listen in on the 145.80 MHz downlink. The contact is expected to be conducted in English. Warren County Technical School which proudly resides on Route 57 the main local artery occupies 176,000 square feet on 40 acres. Warren Tech boasts a campus style setting, which it shares with Warren County Community College, the County 911 Emergency Notification Center and the Warren County Fire Academy. This has been the school’s home since 1969. This mostly bucolic county is located in northwest New Jersey. Our student population hails from the entirety of Warren County, which borders, Morris County to the east, Sussex to the North, Hunterdon to the south and the State of Pennsylvania to the west. Currently Tech’s high school enrollment is 478 students with approximately 80 staff members. Students are enrolled in the following career areas such as, Automotive, Culinary Arts, Engineering, Theater and many others. In addition to our high school program we offer a post-secondary program, which consists of the following: * Black Seal * Cosmetology * Heating, Ventilation and Air Conditioning with Refrigeration * Licensed Practical Nursing GED classes and testing are also held in our facility. Presently seven students have their Amateur Radio license and we hold an after school radio club that runs a VE radio test session at least twice a year for our students and community. Participants will ask as many of the following questions as time allows: 1. Since astronauts have perfect vision, is it known whether there is any effect lack of gravity would have on an astigmatism? Do changes to the pressure on the vitreous humor cause any changes to the eyesight of people with perfect vision? 2. What, if any, changes in mental status can be attributed to the changes in the fluid in the sulci of the brain? 3. Are there any discernible changes to growth patterns by staph or strep bacteria? Do colony sizes or shapes change in extended zero gravity growth? 4. What is the increased rate of kidney stone growth in astronauts and how do they deal with this? 5. If there is a meteor or other space debris headed for the station, how would you assess the threat and is there any way to relocate the station? 6. How do you sleep on station without floating away? 7. What is your least favorite thing about living in space? Is the food terrible? 8. Do your eating and drinking habits change due to lack of a circadian rhythm? 9. How do you shower in space? 10. How long does it take before you become too cold to work outside of the station?" 11. What is the most difficult physical task to perform in space? Why? 12. Have you seen an alien? 13. What type of protection is necessary for UV radiation in space without the ozone layer? 14. What was your first thought when you entered the space station? Was it worth all the sacrifices? 15. Are there problems with venous blood return or lymph circulation? 16. What is the most beautiful thing or event you have seen in space? 17. What happens if there is a medical emergency on the station? 18. How does the schedule rotation for jobs work? Below is word from Canadian ARISS mentor Steve McFarlane VE3TBD about this: Wednesday Oct 23, 2013 – Season Premiere of Reality TV Show Ice Pilots will feature the ARISS program – Amateur Radio on The International Space Station. I/we do not know the full details of what will be included in this episode but we understand a Radio contact with Chris Hadfield will be shown that involves the Canadian mentors that undertake and support these events all across Canada. This team, are made up of Teacher Lori McFarlane, technical coordination Claude Lacasse and program mentor Steve McFarlane VE3TBD all located in Ottawa but were on site during this contact from Hay river. Remotely located but very much a part of this event include Teacher Mentor Brian Jackson VE6JBJ in Calgary and fellow Canadian mentor Wayne Harasimovitch VE1WPH located in Halifax. As mentioned, exact content of the show is not known but we do know a production team from Omni productions recorded the entire presentation and event at the Hay River Public School near Yellowknife. As well, Omni productions did receive the entire video from the ISS showing Chris Hadfield answering questions during the same event. Other video including setup, meeting the show “stars” etc., was recorded but again, we are not certain of the inclusions on the show. All audio during the event was made available and Omni productions have a copy of that – this includes the Telebridge track. All we can hope is that ARISS is well represented and the program receives some well-deserved recognition. I was alerted that this is a reality TV show and almost anything can be broadcast. We are at the mercy of the producers and editors of the show – as they indicated to us – this is about Buffalo Airlines. My final comment to the producer, this show and the space program are linked in ways that are sometimes difficult to understand but it is clear that early aviation pioneers from all over the world, which Buffalo epitomizes, led to what we know today as the Space Program – ARISS is about making our youth believe anything is possible so when they say this is about Buffalo Airlines what they are really saying, this is about how we started our journey to the stars. History Channel is showing for the first time Wednesday October 23 at 22:00hrs. This is the 5th season of ice pilots and I understand some of you may only be on season 4 at this point. The window for contacts during the second half of 2012 has already closed. Look for the window for first half 2013 contacts later this year. You must go through NASA to get the proposal material.
