An International Space Station school contact has been planned with participants at Talcott Mountain Science Center & Academy, Avon, CT on 28 Feb. The event is scheduled to begin at approximately 15:53 UTC. The duration of the contact is approximately 9 minutes and 30 seconds. The contact will be direct between NA1SS and W1TMS. The contact should be audible over portions of the eastern U.S. Interested parties are invited to listen in on the 145.80 MHz downlink. The contact is expected to be conducted in English. Talcott Mountain Science Center is one of Connecticut's premier informal science education institutions. The Center has been an initiator and catalyst in providing enrichment science education to students throughout the Northeast and a leader in teacher in-service education, including special programs for girls in science. TMSC is recognized for its innovations in gifted and talented programs, for its earth and space, alternative energy, atmospheric and environmental science activities for students, with ongoing science and technology in-service education for teachers as well as its one-of-a-kind k-8 model school for intellectually excited students, Talcott Mountain Academy for Mathematics, Science and Technology. Since 1985, Talcott Mountain Science Center has been nationally recognized as a pioneer in the development of interactive video programming in math and science education. How do you know if it is daytime or nighttime in space? 18. How big is the ISS? 19. How old is the ISS? 20. An International Space Station school contact has been planned with participants at 4th Dimotiko Scholeio Chaidariou, Chaidari, Greece on 28 Feb. The event is scheduled to begin at approximately 09:42 UTC. The duration of the contact is approximately 9 minutes and 30 seconds. The contact will be direct between OR4ISS and J41ISS. The contact should be audible over Greece and adjacent areas. Interested parties are invited to listen in on the 145.80 MHz downlink. The contact is expected to be conducted in English. Our school is located in Chaidari, a suburb in the north-west of Athens. It was constructed in 1978, but it is now being renovated so as to be more energy efficient. It is a two-storey building with 16 classrooms, a Head office and a stuff room. It serves 256 pupils, aged between 6 and 12 years old, from 1st Grade through 6th Grade. It is stuffed by a headmistress and 24 teachers, 12 of whom teach all subjects required in the curriculum (that is: Greek Language, Mathematics, Geography, History, Science, Religious Education) plus two Physical Education teachers, a Music lessons teacher, two English language teachers, a French language teacher, a German language teacher, a teacher of Art, a teacher for Theatre, an Information & Technology teacher and a teacher responsible for the afternoon zone study. There is also a teacher who helps those pupils with special educational problems. The official lessons are in the morning (Monday - Friday) start at 8:10a.m. and finish at 2:00p.m. All pupils attend morning lessons, but those pupils whose both parents work, stay on at school and they study and prepare their homework for the next day starting at 12:30 p.m. and finish at 4:15p.m. Our school has constantly been taking part in various projects such as Environmental projects, Health projects, Music and Sports events and any activity that stimulates and advances the students mentally or physically. Our students have won a lot of prizes and awards, too. Two years ago our school participated in "Comenius", a European program in collaboration with other European schools from France, Spain, Norway, Italy, etc. The project was "Parks and Gardens of our Cities" and all the students were very keen on working on it, producing excellent results. An International Space Station school contact has been planned with participants at Soleado Elementary School, Ranchos Palos Verdes, CA on 25 Feb. The event is scheduled to begin at approximately 19:53 UTC. The duration of the contact is approximately 9 minutes and 30 seconds. The contact will be direct between NA1SS and KE6JPM. The contact should be audible over California and portions of the western U.S. Interested parties are invited to listen in on the 145.80 MHz downlink. The contact is expected to be conducted in English. Soleado Elementary School's mission is to educate each and every one of its students to their fullest potential while cultivating a lifelong love of learning. Named for its beautiful location in the hills of Rancho Palos Verdes, our school is proud of its rich cultural background, academic achievement, and involvement in extra-curricular activities. Our mascot, a rosy-cheeked sun, is an exceptionally fitting characterization of our school, which wraps our students in the arms of a caring and supportive community that nurtures development of the whole child. Founded in 1968, even Soleado's physical design embodies community and cooperation, with each core educational building housing five classrooms with one wall "open" to a shared "big room" in the center. The open classroom environment facilitates daily teacher collaboration and student interaction within and among grade levels, while "big rooms" allow for large group activities and foster a positive feeling of family among our students and staff. In addition to our strong sense of community and our open classroom model, another distinguishing characteristic of our school is its cultural and linguistic diversity. With 420 "Soleado Suns" this year in grades DK through 5, our student body encompasses families who come directly from 30 different countries speaking 21 languages. Please join us in listening to the ISS contact with participants at the Uplands Elementary School, Penticton, BC, Canada on Friday February 22nd. AOS is scheduled to begin at approximately 1936 UTC. The duration of the contact is approximately 9 minutes and 30 seconds. The contact will be a tele-bridge between OR4ISS and IK1SLD in Italy. The contact is expected to be conducted in English. The event is being hosted at Uplands Elementary, a school located in Penticton. Lisa Edwards, Principal, believes that students can “SOAR with a view to excellence” in the right environment. There have been a team of people in the community whose goal is to make the Ham Radio contact with you a part of a wider educational experience that will inspire students & educators to continue to explore STEM & space exploration for years to come. An International Space Station school contact has been planned with participants at Uplands Elementary School, Penticton, BC, Canada on 22 Feb. An International Space Station school contact has been planned with participants at 4th Dimotiko Scholeio Chaidariou, Chaidari, Greece on 19 Feb. The event is scheduled to begin at approximately 12:30 UTC. The duration of the contact is approximately 9 minutes and 30 seconds. The contact will be direct between OR4ISS and J41ISS. The contact should be audible over Greece and adjacent areas. Interested parties are invited to listen in on the 145.80 MHz downlink. The contact is expected to be conducted in English. Our school is located in Chaidari, a suburb in the north-west of Athens. It was constructed in 1978, but it is now being renovated so as to be more energy efficient. It is a two-storey building with 16 classrooms, a Head office and a stuff room. It serves 256 pupils, aged between 6 and 12 years old, from 1st Grade through 6th Grade. It is stuffed by a headmistress and 24 teachers, 12 of whom teach all subjects required in the curriculum (that is: Greek Language, Mathematics, Geography, History, Science, Religious Education) plus two Physical Education teachers, a Music lessons teacher, two English language teachers, a French language teacher, a German language teacher, a teacher of Art, a teacher for Theatre, an Information & Technology teacher and a teacher responsible for the afternoon zone study. There is also a teacher who helps those pupils with special educational problems. The official lessons are in the morning (Monday - Friday) start at 8:10a.m. and finish at 2:00p.m. All pupils attend morning lessons, but those pupils whose both parents work, stay on at school and they study and prepare their homework for the next day starting at 12:30 p.m. and finish at 4:15p.m. Our school has constantly been taking part in various projects such as Environmental projects, Health projects, Music and Sports events and any activity that stimulates and advances the students mentally or physically. Our students have won a lot of prizes and awards, too. Two years ago our school participated in "Comenius", a European program in collaboration with other European schools from France, Spain, Norway, Italy, etc. The project was "Parks and Gardens of our Cities" and all the students were very keen on working on it, producing excellent results. The contact will be a telebridge between NA1SS and W6SRJ in California, USA. The contact is expected to be conducted in English. On Wednesday February 13th the scheduled contact is with participants at Chief Peguis Jr. High, Winnipeg, Manitoba, Canada AOS is scheduled for 19:47 UTC The duration of the contact is approximately 9 minutes and 30 seconds. The contact will be a telebridge between NA1SS and VK5ZAI in South Australia. The contact is expected to be conducted in English. Radio amateurs in the footprint are asked to monitor the signals on the 145.80 downlink for signal strength as we are using the back up Erickson radio. Audio from this contact will be fed into the: EchoLink *AMSAT* (101377) and *JK1ZRW* (277208) servers IRLP Node 9010 Discovery Reflector Streaming Audio at: https://sites.google.com/site/arissaudio Audio on Echolink & web stream is generally transmitted around 20 minutes prior to the contact taking place so that you can hear some of the preparation that occurs. An International Space Station school contact has been planned with participants at Chief Peguis Jr. High, Winnipeg, Manitoba, Canada on 13 Feb. The event is scheduled to begin at approximately 19:47 UTC. The duration of the contact is approximately 9 minutes and 30 seconds. The contact will be a telebridge between NA1SS and VK5ZAI. The contact should be audible over the west coast of the U.S. Interested parties are invited to listen in on the 145.80 MHz downlink. The contact is expected to be conducted in English. Chief Peguis Jr. High is in Winnipeg Manitoba. It is a grade 7-9 school with a population of about 550 students and staff. In April of 2011 Chris Hadfield made a personal appearance at our school to talk to the students. He was terrific. Our grade 7 students at that time are currently our grade 9 students and they remember his visit. It is very exciting that these kids (and all the others) get to connect with him while he is on board the ISS. They feel they already have a personal connection with him. Our staff was very impressed with Commander Hadfield as well. His final message to our young people exceeded our expectations. It is a quote I often repeat to my students. It is posted in the hallways of our school."You are all going to grow up to be something. Don't let the world kick you into becoming an adult you don't want to be.. Start planning your future now!" Breadalbane Academy is a rural school serving Highland Perthshire in the heart of Scotland. We have around 700 pupils coming from Aberfeldy, Pitlochry, Rannoch and Dunkeld. We are very interested in all aspects of the space programme and today have people asking questions from the primary school and from the secondary school asking about science, fashion and textiles, physical education and psychology. An International Space Station school contact has been planned with participants at Yokosuka Elementary School, Tokai, Japan on 09 Feb. The event is scheduled to begin at approximately 09:57 UTC. The duration of the contact is approximately 9 minutes and 30 seconds. The contact will be direct between NA1SS and 8N2TOKAI. The contact should be audible over Japan and adjacent areas. Interested parties are invited to listen in on the 145.80 MHz downlink. The contact is expected to be conducted in Japanese. The Yokosuka Elementary school was established at 1907. Location is the South West of Nagoya City. We have 933 students. We selected 15 students from them. Participants will ask as many of the following questions as time allows: 1. For US schools to have an ARISS contact, they must fill out a proposal, submit it to NASA, and see if they are approved or not. Once a school is approved and put on the list, an ARISS mentor will be assigned to assist the school. NASA will have two open windows a year for schools to submit a proposal. The window for contacts during the second half of 2012 has already closed. Look for the window for first half 2013 contacts later this year. You must go through NASA to get the proposal material. An International Space Station school contact has been planned with participants at Ilan Ramon Foundation, Weizmann Institute of Science, Rehovot, Israel on Feb 3. The event is scheduled to begin at approximately 09:01 UTC. The duration of the contact is approximately 9 minutes and 30 seconds. The contact will be a telebridge between NA1SS and K6DUE. The contact should be audible over the east coast of the U.S. Interested parties are invited to listen in on the 145.80 MHz downlink. The contact is expected to be conducted in English. On Feb 3, students of Leyada-The Hebrew University Secondary School in Israel will participate in an ARISS contact with Astronaut Chris Hadfield. This event is a complement to the variety of events held annually in memory of Ilan Ramon, Israel's first astronaut. Among the students participating in the event are the winners of the Space Olympics hosted by the Ilan Ramon Foundation. For the competition the students have been working for the past 3 months on plans for the construction of a space platform designated for satellite repair (as the main goal) and a guest house in space (as a secondary goal). Approximately 200 students will be in attendance of the event. Participants will ask as many of the following questions as time allows: 1. How do you distinguish between day and night in the space station? 2. Does the fact that there are no "up" and "down" directions effect you in any way? 3. How and when do you use the robotic arm? 4. Where do you sleep better, on Earth or in the space station? 5. What do you feel during the launching of the Soyuz? 6. In future development, is there an intention to grow plants using artificial gravity? 7. What scientific research is done in the station? 8. What is an astronaut's daily schedule in the station? 9. How is an illness treated in the station? 10. What preparations and training must an astronaut go through before being sent to space? 11. What do you eat in the station? What do you think of the food? 12. Is it possible to light a match in space, if so how? 13. When sleeping on the ISS, does CO2 gather around an astronaut's face? If so, how do you deal with this problem? 14. How does it feel to do a spacewalk? 15. What do you do in a case of a solar storm? 16. How do you deal with boredom and extra time you have? 17. What mission are you currently working on in the station? 18. How do you deal with homesickness? 19. How do you shower and brush your teeth? 20. How do work shifts function?
