An International Space Station school contact has been planned with participants at Ann Richards School for Young Women Leaders, Austin, TX on 20 Mar. The event is scheduled to begin at approximately 14:20 UTC. The duration of the contact is approximately 9 minutes and 30 seconds. The contact will be a telebridge between NA1SS and VK6MJ. The contact should be audible over portions of Australia and adjacent areas. Interested parties are invited to listen in on the 145.80 MHz downlink. The contact is expected to be conducted in English. The Ann Richards School for Young Women Leaders is a unique all-girls school founded to educate young women and give them the confidence and skills necessary to succeed in college, in their careers, and in their communities. We are a public school in the Austin Independent School District serving over 700 girls in 6th through 12th grade. The girls partake and excel in engineering design projects and robotics competitions. The demographics of our student body mirror that of our local community. During the 2011 - 2012 school year, 61% percent of our students were Hispanic, 22% are Caucasian, 13% were African-American, 3% were Asian-American and 1% were American Indian/Alaskan Native. Two hundred of the girls will be gathered as 10 of their peers ask questions on behalf of all grade levels during the ARISS contact. Participants will ask as many of the following questions as time allows: 1. What is the most consistent repair or maintenance that must be done on the International Space Station? 2. I've heard you grow plants for food on the ISS. How do you grow them? Are the experiments with plants on the ISS helping improve things on Earth? 3. Does having internet available make you feel more or less homesick? 4. What are some of the most difficult psychological effects of living with the same people in space for extended periods of time and being away from earth? 5. What's your favorite place on the ISS? 6. With the risks of working in space, does the ISS have an emergency escape system? 7. What special sanitation issues do astronauts face that those of us on Earth don't worry about? 8. What do we hope to learn from the existence of the ISS and your presence there? 9. What made you want to be an astronaut? 10. Do you get to vote when you're up in space? 11. What are some of the major ways that research on the space station can improve quality of life on Earth, with regards to biotechnology or other fields? 12. Being in orbit do you still experience "turbulence" or disturbances in orbit? 13. What are some of the limitations of living in space as compared to living on Earth? 14. I have noticed that your daily schedule of waking up is at times in the early morning of the US time. What is the reasoning for doing that? 15. What would happen in the event that space debris shattered a window on the ISS? 16. Can you describe the effects of G-forces on the human body during re- entry to our planet? 17. Are you able to see shooting stars or fireworks? 18. What do you like about being in space and what do you dislike? 19. How many personal belongings are you allowed to bring with you to space? 20. Established by the Sisters of the Good Samaritan, Christ the King School, Warradale, is a small, Reception to Year 5 Catholic parish school within the Brighton Parish in Adelaide. The school has approximately 190 students across 7 classes. In the Catholic tradition, we seek to provide a comprehensive Catholic education to children in a caring, faith community. Participants will ask as many of the following questions as time allows: 1. How do you keep yourselves entertained when you are not working? Do you have free time? 2. How do you go to the toilet when there is no gravity? Do you have a normal toilet that flushes? 3. What do you actually do up there? What is your job? 4. Are there every day things we do on Earth, that you need to do differently in space? 5. How long does it take to reach space and go into orbit from the launch time? 6. How do you eat your food and what types of food do you get to eat? 7. Do you have video consoles to play and if so, what are your favourite games? 8. How do you get in and out of the Space Station? 9. Is the Space Station more like a house or a plane? Do you have much room? 10. What are some of the side effects on your body and mind from being in space for a long time? 11. How do you stay healthy in space? Do you eat lots of healthy food and do exercise? 12. When did you become an astronaut and why? 13. How long do spend up in space at any one time? 14. Do you have 'night and day' on the space station? How does this affect your sleep? 15. Has your experience in space given you an awe inspiring feeling of being part of a much bigger picture? Audio from this contact will be fed into the: EchoLink *AMSAT* (101377) and *JK1ZRW* (277208) servers IRLP Node 9010 Discovery Reflector Streaming Audio at: https://sites.google.com/site/arissaudio/ Audio on Echolink & web stream is generally transmitted around 20 minutes prior to the contact taking place so that you can hear some of the preparation that occurs. IRLP will begin just prior to the ground station call to the ISS. Please note that on Echolink there are automatic breaks of 1.5 seconds in the audio transmission. These occur every 2.5 minutes during the event. Breaks on IRLP are manual and occur approximately after every third question. ** Contact times are approximate. An International Space Station school contact has been planned with participants at Mt. Ousley Public School, Fairy Meadow, NSW, Australia on Mar 12. The event is scheduled to begin at approximately 07:35 UTC. The duration of the contact is approximately 9 minutes and 30 seconds. The contact will be a telebridge between OR4ISS and IK1SLD. The contact should be audible over Italy and adjacent areas. Interested parties are invited to listen in on the 145.80 MHz downlink. The contact is expected to be conducted in English. Mt Ousley (ooze-ly) Public School is a government school in coastal Wollongong, New South Wales about 100km south of Sydney. We have 185 students aged 5-12yrs and have 12 teachers. We enjoy learning experiences that connect us with the world and use technology to help us communicate and follow the crew on Facebook and Twitter. Participants will ask as many of the following questions as time allows: 1. How does radiation affect you and do you worry about radiation levels in the thin atmosphere? 2. Does 'sound' sound different in space, both in the ISS and when on a spacewalk? 3. How do you store the oxygen needed for the astronauts and do you have enough to last for extra months if needed? 4. If someone gets ill, what sort of medical procedures do you have in place? If someone is critical, do you have the option to evacuate them back to Earth and would you abort the mission? 5. Do you feel physically or mentally any different when you come back to Earth? 6. How do you know whether it is night or day? Do you get a 'jet- lag' kind of feeling and does it affect your sleep? 7. How does the ISS generate and store electricity to power everything? 8. What were your preparations for going to the ISS, how long does it take to train for the mission? 9. Why is the work you do on the ISS important to mankind? 10. What do you miss most about home when you are in space? 11. How do you read and write if things keep moving around? 12. Can you roll a dice so that it lands on a number or will it just float away? 13. How do you turn on and use the airlock? 14. I want to be an astronaut, what do I need to do? 15. What do you consider to be the best part of your work? 16. Are fires a big risk? What would happen if there was a serious fire that got out of control? 17. Can you eat spaghetti and runny sauce in space? 18. How do you get into the ISS from a rocket or transport ship? 19. Have you seen any signs of life in space and do you think there may be life on other planets? 20. How do you dispose of rubbish and maintain hygiene? 21. In the cramped space of the shuttle/Soyuz, what do you do on the journey to/from the ISS? 22. What's your favourite food to eat in space?
