March 27, 2014 To All RADIO AMATEURS BID: $ANS-086.01 Anthony "Tony" J. Monteiro, AA2TX (SK) AMSAT VP-Engineering and Board Member Anthony J. Monteiro, AA2TX of North Andover, MA died on Wednesday morning, March 26, 2014 while hospitalized in Boston, MA from cancer. He was 55. He is survived by his wife, Mary Lou and daughter, Veronica, a college freshman. Tony was first licensed in 1973 as a Novice and subsequently held an Extra Class Amateur Radio License. An avid operator, he described his first contact in an AMSAT BoD Candidate's Statement in 2011: "I earned my novice ticket in 1973 and made my first ham radio contact with a transmitter made from parts out of an old TV set. A Heathkit HR-10B receiver and a 65-foot piece of wire strung out of a window for an antenna made up the rest of my station, which was pretty modest even by 1973 standards! Even so, I will never forget the thrill of my very first contact." His interest in amateur radio and electronics led him to earn a BS in Electrical Engineering from Drexel University and a MS in Com- puter Science from Stanford University. His professional career started at Bell Laboratories in New Jersey developing network man- agement systems and then consumer products. After working at several startup companies, Tony landed at Cisco Systems where he managed the development of ADSL, voice over packet, and content networking products. He retired from industry in 2002 and focused his efforts working on satellite projects. Tony joined AMSAT in 1994 and started working the satellites. He earned ARRL VHF/UHF Century Club-Satellite #58 and worked 49 states (only Hawaii was not logged) as well. Tony worked a number of stations while he commuted along the I-495 corridor outside Boston. Many will remember working him through AO-40 as he utilized his "cardboard box horn antenna." Tony led a workshop at the 2003 AMSAT Space Symposium where students built similar antennas, demonstrating the ease in which one could build a 2.4 GHz S-band antenna to receive the AO-40 downlink. Additional technical contributions to the amateur satellite com- munity that Tony made included "InstantTune Automatic Radio Tuning" software, "A Simple Desense Filter for Echo", and several extremely low cost projects such as "A $5 Mode V/S Adapter using a Sub-Harmonic Mixer". AMSAT-UK currently offers a 70 CM Parasitic Lindenblad antenna based upon his design. Tony also played a significant role in space-based hardware develop- ment. He collaborated on the NO-60 satellite. As AMSAT's VP-Engineer- ing, he served as the software designer for the SDX (Software Defined Transponder) on ARISSat-1/Kedr that was deployed from the Inter- national Space Station by Russian Cosmonauts during a space walk in August 2011. Tony led the Fox-1 Engineering Team from inception in 2009 and led AMSAT's efforts to apply for acceptance of Fox-1 in the NASA Education Launch of NanoSat (ELaNA) in 2011 and Fox-1B in 2012. He established relationships with several universities to secure scientific payloads for Fox-1 and Fox-1B, including student experiments. A strong proponent of student involvement in satellite projects, Tony served as coordinator of AMSAT Engineering relationships with SUNY-Binghamton, Penn State-Erie, Virginia Tech, and Rochester Institute of Technology where students developed new technologies to be applied in future AMSAT spacecraft as "Capstone" projects. These projects, such as the development of storage capacitors to replace batteries developed by SUNY-Binghamton, provided student experiences that will ultimately be flown in space. The AMSAT JOURNAL in recent years featured several articles concerning these projects. Tony was elected to the AMSAT Board of Directors in 2011 following service for one year as a BoD alternate. Him wise counsel and focus on finding ways to make it affordable for AMSAT to fly amateur radio systems in space resulted in several innovative approaches. It was Tony that convinced the NASA ELaNA program to modify their qualifi- cation criteria to add "not for profits" to those that could apply for launch grants. It was Tony that met with universities that were looking for ways to fly their payloads but didn't have the experience to build satellites, encouraging collaboration that would benefit both AMSAT and the university. Tony's approach to participation in the AMSAT Leadership Team reflect- ed his approach to life. Whenever he had a thought to share with the entire AMSAT Board of Directors and/or Senior Officers via e-mail, he always started with "Dear Friends". As AMSAT VP-Operations Drew Glas- brenner, KO4MA noted, "I always admired how he reminded me we were all friends despite whatever argument was raging." Please join us in listening to the ISS contact with participants at the: *Melbourne Grammar School** - Grimwade House, Caulfield, Victoria, Australia - Tuesday 25 March AOS anticipated at 08:43 UTC* The duration of the contact is approximately 9 minutes and 30 seconds. The contact will be a telebridge between NA1SS and W6SRJ in Santa Rosa, California, USA. The contact should be audible over the west coast of the U.S. Interested parties are invited to listen in on the 145.80 MHz downlink. The contact is expected to be conducted in English. Melbourne Grammar School - Grimwade House is a co-educational Primary School with 650 students aged from 5 to 12 years old. Grimwade House bases its education on the Australian Curriculum. One of the Major Learning Areas outlined in the Australian Curriculum is Science. Grimwade House is fortunate to have a purpose built Science room and a teacher who is dedicated to and passionate about the teaching of Science. Audio from this contact will be fed into the: EchoLink *AMSAT* (101377) IRLP Node 9010 Discovery Reflector Streaming Audio at: https://sites.google.com/site/arissaudio/ Audio on Echolink & web stream is generally transmitted around 20 minutes prior to the contact taking place so that you can hear some of the preparation that occurs. An International Space Station school contact has been planned with participants at Melbourne Grammar School, Grimwade House, Caulfield, Victoria, Australia on 25 March. The event is scheduled to begin at approximately 08:43 UTC. The duration of the contact is approximately 9 minutes and 30 seconds. The contact will be a telebridge between NA1SS and W6SRJ. An International Space Station school contact has been planned with participants at Forest Knolls Elementary School, Silver Spring, MD on 20 March. The event is scheduled to begin at approximately 14:38 UTC. The duration of the contact is approximately 9 minutes and 30 seconds. The contact will be direct between NA1SS and KB3WOA. The contact should be audible over the eastern U.S and adjacent areas. Interested parties are invited to listen in on the 145.80 MHz downlink. The contact is expected to be conducted in English. Forest Knolls Elementary School is a PreK-5 school in Silver Spring, MD, about 8 miles outside of Washington, DC. We are also only a few miles away from NASA Goddard Space Center in Beltsville, MD. The school has over 700 students with a very diverse ethnic population with students from 18 countries. There are 16 different languages spoken, and about one-third of the students are Hispanic. It has an inclusion program for physically disabled students. We also have a Communication Arts program, in which the students focus on Research, Written Communication and Media Production. Susan Michal, magnet coordinator, integrates this program into all classrooms at all grade levels. There is a school amateur radio station, KB3WOA, which holds an afterschool club under the direction of one of the teachers, Melissa Happ-KB3VEX and her husband, Tom Happ-KJ4YFH. There are about 15 students involved in the afterschool club. The radio station is also used with classes, at various grade levels, as part of the curriculum in Social Studies and Communication. The students are very excited to participate in the ARISS contact! Participants will ask as many of the following questions as time allows: 1. How many days of food, water, and air do you have aboard the ISS? 2. From the space station do space and the stars look different than from Earth? 3. What surprised you most when you went to space for the first time? 4. Has being in space affected your metabolism? 5. Does each astronaut need to know everything about the ISS or just specific things for your job? 6. How do you all communicate since you?re from different countries? 7. What is your favorite thing to do for fun in space? 8. How many missions have you been on in the ISS? 9. How do you contact your family while you?re in space? 10. Do you have a medical doctor on board in case someone gets sick? 11. Do you see storms on Earth or any other interesting activity? 12. Do you worry about glitches happening on the ISS? 13. How does it feel when you are traveling 4.791 miles per second? 14. What is the most interesting thing you?ve done during this mission? 15. Do you find that some things are difficult to do on the ISS? 16. What kind of training helped prepare you for life in space? 17. If you weren?t an astronaut, what would you be and why? 18. How does the day/night cycle affect your body? 19. Does the ISS interfere with other orbiting satellites? 20. Do you apply to work on the ISS or does NASA/JAXA choose you? 21. Please join us in listening to the ISS contact with participants at the Warren Consolidated Schools, Warren, Michigan, USA on Friday, March 14th. Aqusition of Signal (AOS) is anticipated at 11:24 UTC. The duration of the contact is approximately 9 minutes and 30 seconds. The contact will be a DIRECT between NA1SS and W8HP at the school. The contact is expected to be conducted in English. The mission of the Warren Consolidated Schools (WCS) district, in partnership with families and community, is to achieve a level of excellence in teaching and learning which enables all students to become knowledgeable, productive, ethical, and successful citizens. To help meet that goal, WCS supports programs in Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics (STEM), which give students a real hands-on experience in education. An International Space Station school contact has been planned with participants at Warren Consolidated Schools, Warren, MI on 14 March. The event is scheduled to begin at approximately 11:24 UTC. The school offers a core curriculum, with emphasis on science, technology, and math. Rock Bridge has a strong belief that in order to prepare students for success in the 21st century, today's learners must be able to think critically and creatively, work collaboratively, and master an ever growing list of skills. The student body is made up of 672 students from all over the Boone County, Missouri area. The school has 24 classroom teachers, 6 special area teachers, 5 teaching assistants in addition to 2 pre-school teachers. The school's mission is to cultivate learners and leaders who are inspired, able, and prepared to make a positive difference in the world. An International Space Station school contact has been planned with participants at Central Square Middle School Amateur Radio Club, Central Square, NY on 03 Mar. The event is scheduled to begin at approximately 14:05 UTC. The duration of the contact is approximately 9 minutes and 30 seconds. The contact will be direct between NA1SS and KC2ILA. The contact should be audible over the portions of the eastern U.S and adjacent areas. Interested parties are invited to listen in on the 145.80 MHz downlink. The contact is expected to be conducted in English. The Central Square Middle School (CSMS) has approximately 1000 students in grades 6, 7, and 8. CSMS is actually 3 schools within a school that function on their own. Each school has grades 6, 7, and 8 and is identified as House 1, House 2, or House 3. Students are assigned to a grade-level team within a house. Students in grades 7 and 8 can participate in interscholastic athletics of many types. There are also many clubs that all grade levels can participate in throughout the year including (to name a few) Leadership (Student Government), Fishing Club, Chess Club and Amateur Radio Club. Amateur Radio Club, KC2ILA, has been active at CSMS for more than two decades. We acquired our call sign in 2001, but used our club advisor's call sign before that. Over the years we have been involved in various electronic construction projects, KC2ILA is always a presence on the air during School Club Roundup in February, and we are always tracking spacecraft carrying Amateur Radios. Over the years several students have spoken with astronauts on space shuttles and students at CSMS spoke with 5 of the 7 NASA astronauts and several cosmonauts, who resided on the Mir Space Station. In September 1994 CSMS organized a scheduled contact between astronauts on Space Shuttle Discovery (STS-64) and students from 8 school districts in Central New York. The radios for the contact were located at the Museum of Science and Technology (MoST) in Syracuse, NY. In the spring of 2013 several club members worked on preparing the application for another scheduled contact, this time with the International Space Station. We are hoping this conversation goes as well as our first scheduled contact! Participants will ask as many of the following questions as time allows: 1. Are you going to be taking part in the Quantum Entanglement Experiment and if so what equipment will you be using? 2. Can you tell us of any direct, recent benefits that have come from research on the ISS that could not be done on Earth? 3. Are there any experiments being performed for private companies on ISS? 4. Do you think the ECLSS being used on ISS will be similar to the one that will be used when humans travel to Mars? Will it solve our water problem when traveling to Mars? 5. Have any of the algorithms from the NASA SPHERES Competition been used on ISS? 6. Is it hard to control the space station as it orbits Earth? 7. What experience on Earth is most comparable to the feeling of weightlessness? 8. What do you do to prepare for a spacewalk and how long do preparations take? 9. How often do you receive supplies and what sort of items do you get? 10. Has the space station ever been hit by debris and if so is there a way to avoid this? 11. Where does all the waste from ISS go? 12. What occurred to make you want to work on the space station or even be up in space? 13. Is it different or harder to sleep in microgravity? 14. What was your biggest shock when you got to space? 15. Is it crowded on ISS? 16. What do stars look like in space? 17. Does it feel like you are at home when you are on the space station? 18.
