The Progress also has the ability to raise the Station's altitude and control the orientation of the Station using the vehicle's thrusters. Credit: NASA ** Both the Progress M and M1 versions have a pressurized Cargo Module to carry supplies, a Refueling Module that holds fuel tanks containing propellant and pressurized gases, and an Instrumentation/Propulsion Module where the Progress systems equipment and thrusters are located. **TO VIEW PICTURES GO TO: http://www.nasa.gov/mission_pages/station/structure/elements/progress.html The Progress spacecraft is launched to the Space Station from the Baikonur Cosmodrome in Kazakhstan aboard a Soyuz rocket. It normally docks to the end of the Station's Zvezda Service Module, but it can also dock to the bottom of the Pirs Docking Compartment. *Cargo Module* The Progress Cargo Module -- which is similar in construction to the Soyuz Orbital Module -- can carry up to 1,700 kilograms (3,748 pounds) of supplies to the Space Station in a pressurized volume of about 6 cubic meters (212 cubic feet). Once the Progress docks with the Space Station, the crew enters the Cargo Module through the docking hatch. After the cargo is removed and before the Progress undocks, the crew refills it with trash, unneeded equipment and wastewater, which will burn up with the spacecraft when it re-enters the Earth's atmosphere. The Cargo Module can hold 1,000 to 1,700 kilograms (2,205 to 3,748 pounds) of trash. Credit: NASA *Refueling Module* In place of the Soyuz Descent Module, the Progress has a Refueling Module. The Progress M1 Refueling Module has eight propellant tanks that can hold up to 1,740 kilograms (3,836 pounds) of fuel, depending on how much weight is carried in the Cargo Module. Four of the tanks contain fuel, while the other four contain the fuel's oxidizer. The Progress M has four tanks -- two for fuel and two for oxidizer -- and two water tanks. The M1 has no water tanks. The contents of the fuel and oxidizer tanks can be transferred to the Space Station's own propulsion system through fluid connectors in the docking ring. This propellant can also be used by the Progress' thrusters to boost the Station altitude or to change its orientation, or attitude, in space. *Instrumentation/Propulsion Module* This module contains the electronic equipment, or avionics, for the Progress' systems and sensors. It is similar in design to the Soyuz Instrumentation/Propulsion Module. Any fuel in this module that is not used to get the Progress to the Station or for undocking and deorbit can be used to boost the altitude of the Space Station. Surplus fuel amounts can vary from 185 to 250 kilograms (408 to 551 pounds). *Rendezvous, Docking and Undocking* The Progress normally takes two days to reach the Space Station. The rendezvous and docking are both automated, although once the spacecraft is within 150 meters (492 feet) of the Station, the Russian Mission Control Center just outside Moscow and the Station crew monitor the approach and docking. The Progress uses an automated, radar-based system called Kurs to dock to the Station. The active portion of the Kurs is on the Progress and the passive equipment is on the Station. The Station crew can also dock the Progress using the TORU system, a backup remote control docking system in the Station's Zvezda Service Module. Once the Progress is filled with trash, usually a day before the launch of the next Progress vehicle, the Station crew closes the hatches and initiates the undocking process. Once the Progress has undocked, the vehicle's thrusters are fired to maneuver it into an orbit that will send it into the Earth's atmosphere, where it will burn up on re-entry over the Pacific Ocean.

Flight Engineer Suni Williams set up hardware for the Test of Reaction and Adaptation Capabilities -- or TRAC -- investigation that is designed to test crew members' hand and eye coordination before, during and after missions. Crew members also completed the final operations of a biological experiment on the impact of varying levels of light and gravity on plant root growth. The cargo craft will launch on Wednesday, Jan. 17, from the Baikonur Cosmodrome in Kazakhstan shortly after 9:00 p.m. EST. The docking is planned for Friday, Jan. 19 at approximately 10:00 p.m. The new Russian cargo ship will bring about 2½ tons of food, fuel, oxygen and supplies to the complex, including clothing and spacewalk hardware for the next station crew that will arrive in April. Packed with discarded items, Progress 22 will undock from the station’s Pirs Docking Compartment Tuesday, Jan. 16 around 6:30 p.m. and its engines will be fired three hours later to send it back into the atmosphere where it will burn up. In other activities, the crew worked for several hours in the Zvezda Service Module on a major systems replacement task, trained on the Robotics Onboard Trainer and relocated it to a new rack in the Destiny lab. On Tuesday, Jan. 16, Progress 22 will undock from the Pirs Docking Compartment at 6:33 p.m. EST. In addition, the crew will store other items onboard the space station to clear areas for new equipment and supplies being delivered by the ISS Progress 24. On Wednesday, Jan. 17 the ISS Progress 24 is scheduled to launch from Baikonur Cosmodrome, in Kazakhstan, Russia at 9:12 p.m. On Friday, Jan. 19, Progress 24 will dock to the Pirs Docking Compartment. Live coverage of the docking begins at 9 p.m. Docking is scheduled for about 10:00 p.m.

Image credit: NASA TV TO SEE PICTURE GO TO: http://www.nasa.gov/mission_pages/station/main/index.html Commander Mike Lopez-Alegria and Flight Engineer Suni Williams Wednesday did a televised interactive talk with the U.S. Embassies in Madrid, Spain, and New Delhi, India. Lopez-Alegria, born in Spain, spoke with U.S. Ambassador Eduardo Aquirre, media and school children. Williams, of Indian background, spoke with U.S. Ambassador David C. Mulford and Rakesh Sharma, the first Indian in space. Also on Wednesday, Lopez-Alegria and Williams performed a mandatory emergency medical on-board training drill. This is an exercise designed to refresh crew members’ skills in applying advanced cardio life support in an emergency. Lopez-Alegria and Williams performed steps to resolve a simulated medical emergency. The objectives of the exercise include practicing communication and coordination necessary to perform medical emergency procedures, locating appropriate emergency medical components and determining each crew member’s individual method of delivering cardio-pulmonary resuscitation in zero-gravity.

ISS amateur radio status (Dec 2006)

The Phase I amateur radio gear in the FGB appears to have developed an intermittent audio issue that will require some crew time to be scheduled in order to try and determine the cause of the problem. This system has been used primarily for school contacts since the packet system associated with that radio began exhibiting problems during Expedition 6. The Phase II system in the ISS service module has not been operating properly since August 2006 when the default settings for the radio changed. The radio transmits and receives fine and continues to be used for school contacts but until the radio is reprogrammed, only intermittent operations will be possible. A computer designated for amateur radio operations that will allow reprogramming of the radio is planned to arrive on the next Progress vehicle in 2007. Until the radio is reprogrammed, it is unlikely that any of the automatic modes (Packet and APRS, SSTV or the Crossband Repeater) will be operating or will only operate for brief periods of time.
