An International Space Station school contact has been planned with participants at Zespol Szkol Technicznych, Rybnicka 44, Poland on 21 Oct. The event is scheduled to begin at approximately 16:38 UTC. The duration of the contact is approximately 9 minutes and 30 seconds. The contact will be direct between OR4ISS and SP9PKS. The contact should be audible over Poland and adjacent areas. Interested parties are invited to listen in on the 145.80 MHz downlink. The contact is expected to be conducted in English. The Complex of Secondary Schools (Zespol Szkol Technicznych, ZST) is located in one of the oldest and most beautiful towns of Upper Silesia, Mikolow. It is the oldest school in this region, founded in 1924, which provides education for four years on a technical level, two or three years on a vocational level, and Further Education School for adults. The education subjects are the following: information technology, electronics, electrical engineering, mechanical engineering, mechatronics, car mechanics and starting from this year economical-administrative, car mechanics, machining centre operators, craftsmen (multi-vocational classes), mechanical engineering with maturity examination. School runs re-qualification courses for production plants and factories' employees and courses for the unemployed people. There are about ninety well-qualified teachers and 750 students attend the school. The Complex of Secondary Schools holds a QUALITY CERTIFICATE ISO 9002 and is equipped with the modern technological equipment gained thanks to the European Union support finances. There are modern training centres: computer use, modern controlling techniques using microprocessor controller units for welding, numerically controlled machines, computer aiding of technological processes. They take part in national and international programs or projects like Leonardo da Vinci and Socrates. Participants will ask as many of the following questions as time allows: 1. The duration of the contact is approximately 9 minutes and 30 seconds. The contact will be direct between NA1SS and 8N2SETO. The contact should be audible over Japan and adjacent areas. Interested parties are invited to listen in on the 145.80 MHz downlink. The language the contact is to be conducted in is still to be determined. Seiryo elementary school is located at Seto city. Seto City is a ceramics center with 1300 years of history and tradition. Located at the center of the Chubu region twenty five kilometers northeast of Nagoya, blessed in its natural surroundings, Seto is nestled in the low mountains of the Owari Hills. The children are learning many knowledge of science and engineering through various experiments. Establishment is 1975. The number of all students at school is 667 people. There is no ham club. Amateur Radio on the International Space Station (ARISS) Status Report October 17, 2011 1. Upcoming School Contacts Seiryo Elementary School, Seto, Aichi, Japan has been scheduled for an Amateur Radio on the International Space Station (ARISS) contact on Tuesday, October 18 at 08:33 UTC. The school was established in 1975 and has an enrollment of 667 students. The contact will highlight the science curriculum which covers electricity, space and technology. An Amateur Radio on the International Space Station (ARISS) contact has been scheduled for Zespol Szkol Technicznych in Rybnicka, Slask, Poland on Friday, October 21 at 16:38 UTC. SP9PKS radio club members have been working with the school to prepare for the contact. Lesson plans have covered construction of radio equipment, contacts via LEO (Low Earth Orbit) satellites and meteorites. 2. Italian Students Hook Up with Astronaut Mike Fossum via ARISS Students from Istituto Superiore "G. Curcio," Ispica, Italy participated in an Amateur Radio on the International Space Station (ARISS) contact on Friday, October 14 via telebridge station W6SRJ in California. Mike Fossum, KF5AQG answered 14 questions posed to him by the youth. He talked about what it is like to live in space, the problems encountered while working in microgravity and the experiments being conducted on the Space Station. The contact was integrated into the science curriculum covering astronomy. 3. Amateur Radio Club Contacts ISS On Saturday, October 15, an Amateur Radio on the International Space Station (ARISS) contact was held between the Amateur Radio Morioka Club located in Morioka, Japan and Satoshi Furukawa, KE5DAW on the ISS. Seventeen students were able to ask questions of the astronaut during the radio connection. Student participants were those who went through difficult times after the tsunami devastation on March 11. 4. Astronaut Participates in JOTA Astronaut Mike Fossum, KF5AQG participated in the Jamboree on the Air (JOTA) event. Fossum, a scoutmaster, spoke with scouts from several states on Saturday, October 15. 5. Kiroli -ARISS Contact Participants Interviewed The first Amateur Radio on the International Space Station (ARISS) contact to be held in Louisiana took place between students attending Kiroli Elementary School in West Monroe and on-orbit Astronaut Satoshi Furukawa, KE5DAW on September 22, 2011. On Thursday, October 6, an educator and two students involved with the contact were interviewed by Jay Curtis from KEDM, a local public radio station, about the University of Louisiana at Monroe (ULM) Amateur Radio Club and Kiroli Elementary School's ARISS contact. ARRL Newsletter on Simulated ARISS Contact The Indiana ARRL Section Newsletter carried a story about the September 21 simulated ARISS contact that took place between Astronaut Tom Marshburn, KE5HOC and students visiting the Indianapolis Challenger Learning Center. The contact was a training session for the astronaut in which he used ARISS equivalent equipment at JSC to prepare him for participation in ARISS contacts during his upcoming mission on the ISS. Marshburn is scheduled to fly with Expedition 34 in November 2012. 7. ARRL Letter Covers ARISS The American Radio Relay League (ARRL) ran a couple of ARISS stories in its October 13 ARRL Letter. The first item talks about Jamboree on the Air (JOTA) over the October 15-16 weekend and Astronaut Mike Fossum's plans to participate in the event. The second story covers the ARISSat-1 CW Contest where participants can copy and submit any 6 of the over 200 call signs transmitted by the satellite. There is a large photo of the Expedition 29 crew and their call signs. The caption mentions the cosmonaut who deployed ARISSat-1. Also, in the "Media Hits" column is a short item about national-level media venues (technology venues) that carried PR about ARISSat-1 and its education potential and capability. 9. Amateur Radio Newsline Covers McFadin Interview On October 14, the Amateur Radio Newsline Report 1783 included a story about an interview with Lou McFadin, W5DID in which he talks about his work at NASA, amateur radio and ham radio experiments in space. For US schools to have an ARISS contact, they must fill out a proposal, submit it to NASA, and see if they are approved or not. Once a school is approved and put on the list, an ARISS mentor will be assigned to assist the school. NASA will have two open windows a year for schools to submit a proposal. The first window for contacts during the first half of 2012 has already closed. Look for the second window for second half 2012 contacts later this year. An International Space Station school contact has been planned with participants at Amateur Radio Morioka Club, Morioka, Japan on 15 Oct. The event is scheduled to begin at approximately 09:47 UTC. The duration of the contact is approximately 9 minutes and 30 seconds. The contact will be direct between NA1SS and 8J7A. The contact should be audible over Japan and adjacent areas. Interested parties are invited to listen in on the 145.80 MHz downlink. The contact is expected to be conducted in Japanese. These are the questions from pupils who went through difficult times after the tsunami devastation on March 11. There are five elementary schools in Otsuchi Township, four of which are now housed in the same temporary campus since September 20. We would appreciate it if you include some words of encouragement while responding to each question. You may "pass" some difficult questions to Professor Sho Sasaki of Mizusawa Observatory who will be present at the school contact site. Participants will ask as many of the following questions as time allows: 1. Are all the stars of the same shape? Can you see the constellations from the ISS? Do they look different from the earth? 2. Have you seen the shooting stars from the ISS? What do they look like? 3. From where do you get your food you eat on the ISS, and how? 4. Can't you use the felt tip pen? Why not? What kind of tools do you use for writing? 5. How can you "swim" in the space? 6. Why is the universe so vast? 7. What is your most favorite planet? Is it true that people don't age in the space? 10. Why don't space shuttles get burned while launching, whereas the returning capsules get extremely hot when they come back to the earth? 11. Have you ever quarreled with someone in the ISS? 12. What is the toughest challenge in the ISS or in the universe? 13. Why did the universe come into place? 14. What was your dream when you were a child? 15. What happens if you spill some water or drink in the ISS? 16. How you can hear the sound in the ISS or in the universe? 17. An International Space Station school contact has been planned with participants at Istituto Superiore "G. Curcio", Ispica, Italy on 14 Oct. The event is scheduled to begin at approximately 11:03 UTC. The duration of the contact is approximately 9 minutes and 30 seconds. The contact will be a telebridge between NA1SS and W6SRJ. The contact should be audible over the west coast area of the US. Interested parties are invited to listen in on the 145.80 MHz downlink. The contact is expected to be conducted in English. Our High School has various courses which deal with different subjects such as Scientific, Linguistic, Classical and others dedicated to Professional and Technical studies. The school is divided into two buildings with different facilities and laboratories for Chemistry and Physics. There are also Language and Computer Labs, a Library and a Gym. The student population is about 1,500 and there are about 100 teachers. The school and especially the students have been greatly motivated to take part in this project with the ISS because of their interests and fields of study. Students in our school are very open-minded and ready for new experiences. We have many projects always going on that stimulate and promote their curiosity. Some are: training courses with companies in the commercial and tourist field, cultural exchange programs with other European countries, participating in the International Conference NHSMUN at the UN in New York City and from this the leap towards the International Space Station just came natural. Participants will ask as many of the following questions (translated) as time allows: 1. We all admire the work you do up there on the ISS, what personal qualities do you need to become a good astronaut? 2. What activities do you like doing most and doing less on the space station? 3. Does working in zero gravity make it a problem? 4. Since everything you do on the ISS is programmed beforehand if you suddenly come up with some interesting experiment can you do it or not? 5. What has been the greatest discovery you've made since you have been on the ISS? 6. What particular gadgets do you take with you to space that you really don't need? 7. Is it sometimes difficult to get along with the other astronauts and how do you solve differences? 8. Was becoming an astronaut a dream come true? 9. Is it more tiring physically or mentally to stay so long on the space station? 10. What experiments are you conducting at the moment and have they given any useful results? 11. What has been the most unusual event on Earth that you have been able to observe from space? 12. How long does the trip from Earth to the ISS take? 13. What have you liked best about being an astronaut up to now? 14. Do you think that there could be other forms of life on other planets? 15. During your years of training to become an astronaut have you ever gotten discouraged? 16. Have any of you seen unusual objects flying around in space? 17. Do you lose any amount of your senses by staying so long in space? 18. Since you are surrounded by technological equipment for everything you do, what do you miss most of all of nature? 19.
