Amateur Radio on the International Space Station (ARISS) Status Report March 2, 2009 1. Upcoming School Contact An Amateur Radio on the International Space Station (ARISS) contact has been scheduled with Padthaway Primary School in Padthaway, SA, Australia on Tuesday, March 3 at 08:32 UTC via telebridge station W6SRJ in California. To prepare for the contact, children wrote essays on space related topics. They chose a planet to analyze for feasibility of life, looked at the life of an astronaut (training, diet, etc), researched an event in space history and created a timeline of important events in space history. Media coverage is planned. 2. Upcoming ARISS Simulated Contacts Three simulated Amateur Radio on the International Space Station (ARISS) contacts have been scheduled for Wednesday, March 4. These training sessions are terrestrial-based amateur radio contacts using ARISS-equivalent equipment. Audio is expected to be available on IRLP. All times are approximate. 15:15 UTC - Technopolis, Belgium and Andre Kuipers, PI9ISS 15:30 UTC - Ralph McCall School, Airdrie, Alberta, Canada and Chris Hadfield, VA3OOG 15:45 UTC - Ralph McCall School, Airdrie, Alberta, Canada and Cady Coleman, KC5ZTH 3. Fassett Middle School Contact Successful Fassett Middle School in Oregon, Ohio experienced a successful Amateur Radio on the International Space Station (ARISS) contact on Monday, February 23. Mike Fincke, KE5AIT, answered 16 students' questions while over 550 people who gathered for the event looked on. The Oregon school superintendent was also present for the contact. Audio was fed into the EchoLink AMSAT (101377) and JK1ZRW (277208) servers. Thirteen connections were made, including 3 link nodes and one repeater, from England, Germany, Malaysia and the U.S. The Toledo Blade and TV 11 covered the news. Australian Contact Successful Chatham Public School in Taree, NSW, Australia, took part in an Amateur Radio on the International Space Station (ARISS) contact on Wednesday, February 25 via telebridge station K6DUE in Maryland. The event was held at the studios of Radio 2RE. Mike Fincke, KE5AIT, answered 13 questions posed to him by ten children. John Key, the New Zealand prime minister, tied in to the contact and sent greetings to Mike from the Asia/Pacific region. Thirty-eight radio stations belonging to the Super Radio Network covered the event the following morning. The audio was also fed into the EchoLink AMSAT and JK1ZRW servers and received 19 connections from stations in the USA, New Zealand, Australia, Russia, Belgium and England. 5. Italian School Questions Astronaut On Wednesday, February 25, students from 1 Circolo Didattico G. Marconi in Casamassima, Italy participated in an Amateur Radio on the International Space Station (ARISS) contact with Mike Fincke, KE5AIT. Seventeen students asked one question each of the astronaut. Special guest Princess Elettra Marconi attended the event and spoke briefly with Mike as approximately 250 students, teachers and others watched. New York Contact Successful Students attending Hampton Bays Middle School in Hampton Bays, New York took part in an Amateur Radio on the International Space Station (ARISS) contact on Wednesday, February 25. Students created a mockup set of the ISS from which ten students asked 14 questions of Mike Fincke, KE5AIT. The school's IT department provided live coverage of the contact to all the schools in the district via intranet. Video of the event will be available on the school Web site in the near future. 7. Astronaut Training Status An Amateur Radio on the International Space Station (ARISS) training session was held with Cady Coleman, KC5ZTH, on Wednesday, February 18. Coleman is a backup crew member for Expedition 20. On Tuesday, February 24, two successful simulated ARISS contacts took place. The first was held between students at the European Space Center, Belgium and Frank DeWinne, ON1DWN. The second was held between the Manordale Public School children in Canada and Bob Thirsk, W5/VA3CSA. 8. ARRL Announces Dayton Hamvention Guest Speaker The American Radio Relay League (ARRL) ran an article about the upcoming ARRL National Convention to be held at the Dayton Hamvention in May. Richard Garriott, W5KWQ, will attend the event and spend time in the ARRL EXPO area greeting visitors. He will also speak at the Hamvention forum. Richard Garriott, Keynote Speaker at AMSAT Banquet The Radio Amateur Satellite Corporation (AMSAT) announced that Richard Garriott, W5KWQ, will be the keynote speaker at the AMSAT/TAPR Banquet during Dayton Hamvention 2009. I had my scanner set to 145.800Mhz and was able to hear most of the pass from Long Island New York. There is audio from my QTH here: http://www.w2lie.net/download.php?view.372 I will be streaming the downlink audio for the School Contact for Hampton Bays School in Hampton Bays NY. That location is at most an hour from here so I am hoping to catch the entire pass. An International Space Station Expedition 18 ARISS school contact has been planned with participants at the Humber College Institute of Technology & Higher Learning, Toronto, ON, Canada on 02 February. The event is scheduled to begin at approximately 1734 UTC. The contact will be a direct between stations NA1SS and VA3JUV. The contact should be audible over most of eastern N. America. Interested parties are invited to listen in on the 145.80 MHz downlink. The participants are expected to conduct the conversation in English. Humber, a member of Polytechnics Canada, is committed to student success through excellence in teaching and learning. Humber's broad range of career-focused, educational programs include: apprenticeship, certificates, diplomas, bachelor's degrees and postgraduate certificates. With more than 350 programs from which to choose, the 20,000 full-time and 55,000 part-time students of Humber have access to many opportunities for continuous learning.~ Building from one credential to another, either at Humber or through transfer credit opportunities with more than 50 Canadian and international universities, students have multiple pathways to success Humber maintains strong partnerships with industry, and trains more than 15,000 people annually through customized corporate training. The participants will ask as many of the following questions as time allows: 1. How does the ISS defend itself from natural radiation such as the Van Allan belts, and does any cosmic radiation damage the electronics? 2. The ISS uses a Low Earth Orbit (LEO), however Earth has around it five Lagrangian points where objects remain stationary in those spaces. Why wasn’t the ISS placed on a Lagrangian point where people wouldn’t have to worry should a failure cause the ISS to go hurtling out of control into Earth? 3. This is the student’s professor Mark Rector. Since the radio is your lifeline for help, how many redundant backup radio transmitters do you have on the ISS, and more importantly in the unlikely event that all of them suffered a catastrophic failure how would you call for help? 4. Is the ISS structure secure enough to sustain impacts from space debris, like those from previous missions or natural threats like asteroids? 5. Do you feel that the ISS has brought different countries together? 6. As you may know in today’s society some people have given up hope because they can not see beyond what’s right in front of them. What would you say to anyone whose eyes have not beheld the vast wonders of the world that you have been so privileged to have seen. 7. Since I am a student in the Telecom Program and we know that interference can be a major problem for communication, how often are your transmissions affected by interference specifically from sun spots and how do you relieve this problem? 8. As an engineer can you describe the most basic and most advanced electronics skills you must have in one of your team members to operate safely on the ISS. 9. I read that the station uses S-band signals for voice and data file transmissions, UHF for space walks and ku-band for video communication. I'm curious as to what modulation techniques are used for the ku-band and what data speeds do guys achieve while moving at 27,000Kms per second 10. On behalf of the President, our Dean and Associate Deans, we would like to say that we here at Humber encourage our students to achieve their best and reach for the stars. Today though, these four students have proven that this is literally possible with superior academic training, excellence in instruction and fierce determination. Thank you for giving my students the thrill of a lifetime. Thank you NASA for giving this professor the chance to be so proud of these four young men and for the highlight of my teaching career. 11. As opposed to transporting soil to a giant space-based biosphere, could the soil of Mars or the Moon be converted for use to grow agricultural plants/food? 12. In light of the new movement towards energy conservation, approximately what is the total power consumption on board the ISS in a day (compared to about 9000kW/h per year for the avg home) and approximately what percentage of that comes from the solar panels? 13. What procedure would you deploy to get all the crew out of a damaged ISS? 14. I’ve heard even atomic-powered clocks in satellites orbiting the Earth, which were in synch with a reference clock before they left, have been out of synch upon return to the ground. Can you explain this loss of time? 15. Can you do any electronic repairs more complex than circuit board swapping, onboard the ISS in the event of a failure, and what challenges do those repairs present in zero g? 16. How long before you think we would have a full-fledged city or village on the Moon built? 17. How often do the solar panels need to be replaced or repaired, and what is the maximum life span of an ISS solar panel? 18. The ISS is a multibillion-dollar project sustained by multiple nations. Who is ultimately responsible in choosing the experiments and missions to be carried out onboard the spacecraft? An International Space Station Expedition 18 ARISS school contact has been planned with participants at Technopolis, Mechelen, Antwerpen, Belgium on 03 Janurary. The event is scheduled to begin at approximately 1035 UTC. The contact will be a telebridge between stations NA1SS and VK4KHZ. The contact should be audible over eastern Australia. Interested parties are invited to listen in on the 145.80 MHz downlink. Audio from the contact should also be available via the AMSAT conference on EchoLink and via the 9010 Discovery reflector on IRLP. The participants are expected to conduct the conversation in English. Technopolis® is a permanent platform for science and technology in Mechelen, Flanders, Belgium. The mission of Technopolis® is to bring science and technology to the people. For this purpose Technopolis® offers permanent and temporary exhibitions, organises workshops, school activities and other outreach activities for 4 to 99 years old : a Science Week and Science Festival, an annual exhibition at the Royal Palace in Brussels and many activities for a variety of organisations (governmental, private and educational). Technopolis® is also involved in a broad range of European projects to promote science and technology to a broad audience. The radio contact with ISS will be incorporated in the planning during the Christmas holidays. Upcoming School Contacts An Amateur Radio on the International Space Station (ARISS) contact has been scheduled with Oregon City Schools, Fassett Middle School in Oregon, Ohio. The ARISS program was incorporated into the curriculum as students studied the positions and motions of objects in the universe, matter and gravity. The students learned about how the universe has been explored and studied how technology affects the quality of life. A contest was held to determine the questions to be asked of the astronaut. The contact will take place on Monday, February 23 at 14:35 UTC. Audio from this contact will be fed into the EchoLink AMSAT (101377) and JK1ZRW (277208) servers. Chatham Public School in Taree, NSW, Australia, will experience an Amateur Radio on the International Space Station (ARISS) contact on Wednesday, February 25 at 07:32 UTC via telebridge station K6DUE in Maryland. The school has an enrollment of approximately 325 students, ages 5-12. The ARISS contact has been integrated into the school unit on Communication, Space and the Future. The students have been following the ISS crew's mission, which has been reported on in the school and community newsletters, the local paper and on television. The school curriculum includes topics on planets, the solar system and space travel. Students have been encouraged to investigate careers in the aerospace industry. Weather, space flights, and astronomy have been covered in their science classes. An essay contest was held in grades 5-8 to determine which students will speak to the astronaut. Salluit Students Question Astronaut via Radio Students attending Salluit Schools in Salluit, Quebec, Canada experienced an Amateur Radio on the International Space Station (ARISS) contact on Thursday, February 19 via telebridge station W6SRJ in California. Mike Fincke, KE5AIT, answered 15 questions posed to him by the students. The audio was fed into the EchoLink AMSAT and JK1ZRW servers and received 6 connections from the U.S., Spain, Italy and England. Approximately 450 parents, elders and students (out of a village of 1000) were present for the contact. Parents were out and about early in the day, indicating this event was a huge accomplishment, as they do not normally come out early this time of year due to the severe cold. ARISS mentor Steve McFarlane remarked, "The contact was a huge success - these people really enjoyed the experience and are ever thankful to the parties involved for their work in showing their children that there are incredible discoveries and adventures to be had - all they have to do, is believe... apparently we moved them a little closer to that today...." 5. Erie Planetarium Contact Successful On Saturday, February 21, Erie Planetarium in Pennsylvania participated in an Amateur Radio on the International Space Station (ARISS) contact with Mike Fincke, KE5AIT, via telebridge station W6SRJ in California. Twelve students asked 21 questions of the astronaut in front of a crowd of 200. At least one television station reported on the event. The audio was fed into the EchoLink AMSAT and JK1ZRW servers and had 13 connections, including one repeater, from 8 countries. Among those listening were stations in China, New Zealand and Spain. A ham operator who was manning a Radio Amateur Satellite Corporation (AMSAT) exhibit table at a Yuma, Arizona hamfest used his radio to listen to the contact as part of his demonstrations. Even though only the ISS side of the contact was heard, the crowd enjoyed hearing Mike answer the questions. 6. SuitSat-2 Meeting Held The Amateur Radio on the International Space Station (ARISS) team held a SuitSat-2 meeting on Friday - Sunday, February 20 - 22 in Phoenix, Arizona. Status reports of the different modules were given and reviewed and the team began integration testing. 7. ARISS International Team Meeting Held Amateur Radio on the International Space Station (ARISS) held its monthly teleconference on Tuesday, February 17. Agenda items discussed included the upcoming face-to-face meeting to be held in the Netherlands in June, Charles Simonyi's planned activities during his mission in March and a status on SuitSat-2. ARRL Letter Article on Dieter Schliemann Amateur Radio on the International Space Station (ARISS) team member Dieter Schliemann, KX4Y, passed away on Monday, February 9. Dieter had been responsible for coordinating and expanding the educational outreach of ARISS through the use of Voice over the Internet Protocol (VoIP) with Internet Radio Linking Project (IRLP) and EchoLink. As his health deteriorated, Dieter continued his support, making sure that others would carry on in his absence. He will be sorely missed. The Chatham School in Taree NSW. Australia expects to be speaking with astronaut and ham, Mike Fincke, KE5AIT on Wed,25.Feb at 07:31 UTC. The link-up will be telebridged via K6DUE at GSFC. Craig, VK4SSB, will be coordinating the event which will take place at the studios of Radio 2RE.
