An International Space Station Expedition 15 ARISS school contact has been planned with children at the One Stop Richmond Hill Community Center, Richmond Hill, New York, USA on 07 Aug. The event is scheduled to begin at approximately 13:25 UTC. The contact will be a telebridge between stations NA1SS and WH6PN. The contact should be audible in Hawaii. Interested parties are invited to listen in on the 145.80 MHz downlink. In addition, the audio should be available via IRLP and EchoLink. The participants are expected to conduct the conversation in English. Richmond Hill Community Center began as a block association 37 years ago. It expanded to become the One Stop Richmond Hill Community Center and serves the neighborhood with many programs including children's summer camp, citizenship and English as a Second Language courses, after school tutoring for neighborhood children, Mommy and Me preschool programs, Videoconference and Computer Technology after school and summer program for elementary school children, local civilian patrol and a Community Emergency Response Team program (CERT). The community center also holds meetings regularly to get neighborhood feedback and concerns to solve local area problems. All of these programs are funded and supported by state elected officials (bipartisan) and therefore are offered at no cost to the community. The One Stop Richmond Hill Community Center in NYC (Queens, NYC) is headed by Community Center President Simcha Waisman and Director Joan Bachert. Participants will ask as many of the following questions as time allows: 1. What was the biggest challenge the crew faced during any of the spacewalks while you were working on the ISS? 2. What is your favorite foods in space and does chocolate taste strange in space? 3. How often are you able to email your family from space? 4. What activity is the most fun as you float around the space station? 5. What is your favorite module of the space station and why? 6. What did you bring with you to remind you of family and home? 7. What are you doing with robots on the space station? We notice it is on your list of activities. 8. It is exciting up there. What do you do if you have trouble going to sleep? 9. Do you ever share meals and what kind of food is your favorite? 10. What do you eat for breakfast -- and can you change your mind about what you want to eat? 11. We know you have private family conference time. How long do you talk to your family and can you see them? 12. What surprises have there been? What did not go as expected? 13. How did you first become interested in space science? 14. Do your children want to travel in space like you and why? 15. Has any of you gotten sick in space and what did you do about it? 16. Do you have Internet on the ISS and what video games are your favorite (if you have any)? 17. How do you get news up in space? Can you watch any of it and does mission control send any news to you? 18. When you return home, what is the first thing you want to do? 19. What food do you miss most up in space? 20. What sports can you play up there in microgravity? 21. Fire safety is important here. What has to be done when you inspect the ISS smoke detectors? 22. How is trash prepared for return to Earth? Is there a compactor? 23. Is the ISS going to become a national laboratory and what kind of experiments will be most important? 24. What fun things will you be leaving behind for the next crew to use? Credit: NASA Flight Engineer Clay Anderson this week has been evaluating samples of microorganisms on the International Space Station. The samples are part of a year-long experiment called Surface, Water and Air Bio-characterization, or SWAB. Image credit: NASA/Jack Pfaller + View larger image <http://www.nasa.gov/images/content/170419main_strutfix-lg.JPG> With space shuttle Discovery's right landing gear reassembled following the replacement of its four hydraulic seals, technicians now are carrying out a series of tests on the system. Once these tests are concluded on Saturday and the repairs have been determined successful, the way would be cleared for Discovery's move on Sunday from its processing hangar at NASA’s Kennedy Space Center to the Vehicle Assembly Building. Depending on how processing operations go, rollout to the launch pad could take place one week later. One of Discovery’s struts, which act as shock absorbers during the shuttle's landing, began leaking hydraulic fluid last week. Once Discovery is in the Vehicle Assembly Building, it will be attached to its external fuel tank and two solid rocket boosters for its upcoming mission, STS-120, to the International Space Station. An International Space Station Expedition 15 ARISS school contact has been planned with participants at Pueblo Magnet High School, Tucson, Arizona USA on 21 Sep. The event is scheduled to begin at approximately 15:04 UTC. The contact will be a direct between stations NA1SS and KD7RPP. The contact should be audible in most of western North America. Interested parties are invited to listen in on the 145.80 MHz downlink. In addition, the audio should be available via IRLP and EchoLink. The participants are expected to conduct the conversation in English. The school's name, Pueblo Magnet High School, might connote a "highly developed and worldly" school. Pueblo is anything but "complicated or finely experienced and aware". Pueblo High School may be more accurately described as a pueblo: an intimate village whose inhabitants most often learn about the larger world only as it comes to them." The bias of being a "south side school" has a negative effect on teen's self-esteem, teachers' morale and the potential for our program. A large percentage of the students are basically poor, coming from undereducated environments. Administration, teachers and staff at Pueblo Magnet High School work very hard to build a positive reputation that is challenged daily by the reality of neighborhood violence, dropout statistics, low socioeconomic status and low achievement. Touch the Sky is a project that has been underway for almost two years and that has as a primary objective, Pueblo Magnet High School students communicating, via amateur radio technologies, with astronauts aboard the International Space Station. Pueblo students are already learning to apply their daily curriculum lessons by applying them to their study of electronics, Federal Communication Rules and Regulations and amateur radio operating procedures in preparation for their amateur radio license exams. Presently there are five student licensed amateur radio operators, one at the General Class level. There are 27 other members in the Pueblo High School Amateur Radio Club who will become licensed radio operators by April 2008. Pueblo High School is a registered school with the American Radio Relay League as one of only 200 schools nationwide in their "Big Project" Program. Participants will ask as many of the following questions as time allows: 1. How many times have you orbited earth since you boarded the ISS? 2. Based on your present space experiences, do you believe there is human life on another planet? 3. What is there to do in the ISS? 4. Why did you want to be an astronaut? 5. How does it feel to be in a place where there is no gravity? 6. Were you scared when you went into space? 7. What advice can you give us teens who want to start a career in space? 8. How does loss of gravity affect your digestive system and how do you eliminate bodily wastes? 9. What do you eat in space? 10. What was your state of mind as you left earth? 11. What is your sense of awe and wonderment of nature in outer space? 12. What is something you took for granted on earth that you now miss? 13. Is it difficult to sleep in space? 14. How do you use your hands to touch things when you are in your space suit? 15. Are your sleep patterns different in outer space? 16. How much psychological pressure do you experience when you are taking a space walk? 17. What do you do in case of a power failure? 18. Is it possible for people to build a station on the moon for people to live in? 19. How do you communicate with your family? 20. Do you have the internet in space? 21. How has space travel changed you and how will you live your life when you return to earth? 22. How do you know when it's time to sleep or rise if there is no day or night aboard the ISS? 23. If the ISS is rotating, how are your antennas directed or polarized? 24. Who or what inspired you to become an astronaut? 25. How is your sense of taste different in space? 26. Progress 25 will orbit a safe distance from the International Space Station for a week after undocking. This will enable Russian engineers to perform propulsion tests on the cargo craft before it finally deorbits and burns up over the Pacific Ocean. On Thursday, Sept. 27, the Expedition 15 crew will enter the Soyuz TMA-10 spacecraft, undock from the Zarya’s earth-facing port and relocate to the Zvezda service module’s aft port. On Oct. 12, Expedition 16 will arrive at the International Space Station in a Soyuz TMA-11 for a crew swap. Arriving with Expedition 16 Commander Peggy Whitson and Flight Engineer Yuri Malenchenko is Spaceflight Participant Sheikh Muszaphar Shukor.
