An International Space Station school contact has been planned with participants at Schulhaus Dorf, Richterswil, Switzerland on 7 March. The event is scheduled to begin at approximately 14:34 UTC. The duration of the contact is approximately 9 minutes and 30 seconds. The contact will be direct between OR4ISS and HB9IRM. The contact should be audible over Switzerland and adjacent areas. Interested parties are invited to listen in on the 145.80 MHz downlink. The contact is expected to be conducted in English. Richterswil is situated at the lake of Zurich. Although it is not very big it has 4 train stations and a direct access to the highway, which is part of the national street system. Some of the approx. 11'000 inhabitants work in Zurich, which is about 30 kilometers away. Others are employed at one of the local firms or have jobs in the neighboring towns and villages. There are five schools and several kindergardens. Richterswil hosts its own museum and many different organizations such as sports clubs, a women's club, a parent's organization, a theatre group, several choirs and more. Every year on the second Saturday in November the "Räbechilbi" takes place. It is a huge turnip fair (actually the biggest in the world), where pictures made of turnips and lit by candles, are pulled through the town by school children and the members of our many clubs. This event is always visited by thousands of people, locals as well as tourists. At our school we teach about 130 children aged from 10 to 13 years. They are split up into six classes (grades 4 to 6). Staff includes 8 teachers, a social worker and 2 janitors. Our school is situated next to the church and the hospital. Our class takes new challenges very willingly. As our goal we would like them to get more information about space and space travel. We intend them to become aware of a wonderful and interesting world around ours. As non native speakers it is also a good opportunity of practicing English - a language our students learned during the last two years. Participants will ask as many of the following questions as time allows: 1. How old do you have to be to go into space? What are physical requirements, if any? 2. How do you feel when the rocket launches? 3. How do you like the food in the space and how do you prepare it? 4. What's your favourite movie? 5. Do you have children, a family or a wife? Do you miss them? 6. How does it feel in zero gravity? 7. Was the training difficult? 8. What are your plans when this mission is over? 9. Why did you choose to become an astronaut? 10. How do you feel, when you return to earth? 11. How do you feel spending Christmas in space? 12. Was it difficult to become an astronaut and to pass the exams? 13. How do you feel when you see the Earth from space? 14. What did you originally train to be? 15. What kind of experiments are you doing at the moment? 16. What do you wear while you are in the ISS? An International Space Station school contact has been planned with participants at ICS "Marco D'oggiono", Oggiono, I-23848, Italy on 7 March. The event is scheduled to begin at approximately 12:59 UTC. The duration of the contact is approximately 9 minutes and 30 seconds. The contact will be direct between IR0ISS and IZ2STR. The contact should be audible over Italy. Interested parties are invited to listen in on the 145.80 MHz downlink. The contact is expected to be conducted in Italian or English. The Marco d'Oggiono school is located in the very centre of Oggiono, a small town of about 8,000 people near Lecco. The school is attended by 1140 students: 122 in the infant school, 630 in the elementary school, and 388 in the middle school. The Middle School has a Science lab, a Music room, two Art rooms and two well-equipped computer rooms, one with an interactive board. There is a gym, a canteen, a students library and a teachers library. In the Middle School we have a team of 48 teachers. The subjects studied are the following: Italian, History, Geography, Maths, Science, ICT, Technology, Art, Music and the following foreign languages: English, French, German and Spanish. Victory Primary School is a decile-3 primary school of 400 students, providing Year 1 to 6 mainstream and bilingual Maori education. In doing so, it practices The Victory Pathway, which is an interactive approach to producing positively achieving young people, developing strong families and building on social capital in the Victory community. The school promotes a Home/School Partnership programme to enable parents to support their children in their studies. Victory Primary has students from all over the world and cultural diversity is recognized and celebrated every day. The Institute for Technological Development and Research in Communications (IDeTIC®), formerly known as CeTIC, is a Research and Development centre at the University of Las Palmas de Gran Canaria (ULPGC), which was founded in 2006. Formerly the CeTIC was composed of three research divisions in communications engineering with more than 10 years worth of experience, to whom were later added two new divisions in early 2009. Its main goal is transferring technology between companies and the university and, as part of it, to teach and train students in communications. Our staff includes researchers (both internal and third-party), PhD, MSc and BSc students, along with other collaborating staff members. In the last 5 years our research strategies and results have been supported by more than 200 publications on scientific magazines and international conferences. All of them endorsed by our participation in more than 50 research projects, most being joint collaborations amongst international institutions and cutting-edge technological companies. Does food taste the same as here? 14. What will you miss most from space when you'll be back on Earth? 15. How long do you think it will take to inhabit other planets? 16. If you established communications with a U.F.O. and you only had three words to describe humanity, which ones would you choose? 17. What would happen if you found space debris on your way? 18. What would you do if any member of the crew in the spaceship got seriously sick? 19. What is more important for the space trip: physical training or psychological preparation? 20. Amateur Radio on the International Space Station (ARISS) Status Report February 28, 2011 1. Upcoming School Contacts An Amateur Radio on the International Space Station (ARISS) contact has been scheduled for Mackay State High School in Mackay, Queensland, Australia on Wednesday, March 2 at 01:20 UTC via Australian telebridge station VK5ZAI. The contact has been incorporated into the science curriculum covering astronomy, space exploration, physics, communications and biology. Technological Centre for Innovation in Communications (CeTIC) in Las Palmas, Spain has been scheduled for an Amateur Radio on the International Space Station (ARISS) contact on Thursday, March 3 at 14:17 UTC. Prior to the contact, workshops will be held to introduce students to satellite communications. Topics will include orbit prediction, satellite tracking and common communications systems in both the space and earth segments. In order to promote interest in space technology across the university community, the school held a contest to choose the most original and relevant questions to ask of the astronaut. 2. Recent ARISS Contacts On Tuesday, February 22, Preston North East Primary School students in Preston, Victoria, Australia spoke with astronaut Catherine Coleman, KC5ZTH via an ARISS contact made possible through telebridge station W5RRR in Houston. Over 500 students, teachers and parents were present for the event and listened as the astronaut fielded 14 students' questions during the 9.5 minute pass. The ARISS contact was the culmination of a curriculum covering Earth and the Solar System. Members of the Nishibori Eizaburo Memorial Explorer Museum Radio Club, Higashiomi, Shiga, Japan participated in an ARISS contact with Italian astronaut Paolo Nespoli, IZØJPA on Tuesday, February 22. Nespoli handled 14 questions and was answering the fifteenth question as the ISS went over the horizon. The contact highlighted lessons about the ISS, its mission and space science. 3. Astronaut Training Status On Thursday, March 3, astronauts André Kuipers, PI9ISS and Don Pettit, KD5MDT are scheduled to participate in simulated ARISS contacts with students from University of Leuven, Department of Chemistry, Heverlee, Belgium and Manordale Public School, Ottawa, Canada, respectively. The training sessions are terrestrial-based amateur radio contacts using ARISS equivalent equipment. Both astronauts are slated to fly with Expedition 30 in November 2011. 4. Amateur Radio Newsline Covers ARISSat On February 25, the Amateur Radio Newsline Report 1750 posted two items under the heading ARISSat-1 Update. An International Space Station school contact has been planned with participants at McKay State High School, Mackay MC, Queensland, Australia on 02 March. The event is scheduled to begin at approximately 01:20 UTC. The duration of the contact is approximately 9 minutes and 30 seconds. The contact will be a telebridge between NA1SS and VK5ZAI. The contact should be audible over portions of Australia. Interested parties are invited to listen in on the 145.80 MHz downlink. The contact is expected to be conducted in English. The city of Mackay is located on the north east coast of Australia in Queensland adjacent to the Great Barrier Reef. The climate is Sub Tropical. There is a large number of students in our school and in the junior years "Space" has been incorporated into the normal program in which all students are mandated to undertake. This incorporates various astronomy outcomes from years 8 to 10. Each year consists of approximately 150 to 180 students. Year 8 students undertake an individual Astronomy Survey as an assessment task in their unit 3 week "Space" unit. The students have to generate ten questions of interest to them, connected with astronomy and then they have to ask a multitude of people for responses to the questions and generate a report in which they analyse results obtained. Some of these questions may assist students in forming the basis for questions in the broadcast with the space station. Participants will ask as many of the following questions as time allows: 1. Do you currently employ any methods to combat radiation emitted from the sun? And if not is anything being tested or planned for this purpose? 2. What do you see as the future for astronauts and NASA space exploration? 3. What are the physical effects of going into space and coming home? 4. If the Earth was positioned anywhere else in our solar system, do you think life would be able to exist? 5. Do you get physically tired in space even though your body does not exert any force when you float and your muscles are not working against gravity? If you do get tired then why? 6. How much of a difference is it, sleeping in space compared to sleeping on Earth? 7. What is your opinion on the many conspiracies concerning the moon landing and do you believe any of them? 8. Does it get hot in your spacesuit? 9. Considering the chain of technical failures that contributed to a near catastrophic end to "Apollo 13" that was depicted in the film, what advances in technology and safety has occurred that gives astronauts a greater sense of safety than what they had during the early days of space travel. 10. What problems do you face doing experiments up there? 11. How different is the viewing of stars in space since there is no atmosphere around the ship. 12. What is the Station's defence against solar flares and radiation? 13. How does zero gravity affect bodily functions? 14. What systems do you have on-board the ISS to monitor the weather systems on Earth? 15. How do you go to the toilet in space? 16.
