Please join us in listening to the ISS contact with the George Observatory, Needville, Texas on Saturday 16th October at 17:03 UTC. This will be a telebridge and the Ground Station will be WH6PN. Audio from this contact will be fed into the EchoLink *AMSAT* (101377) and *JK1ZRW* (277208) servers. Audio is generally transmitted around 15 minutes prior to the contact taking place so that you can hear some of the preparation that occurs. Please note that on Echolink there are automatic breaks of 1.5 seconds in the audio transmission. These occur every 2.5 minutes during the event. ** Contact times are approximate. An International Space Station school contact has been planned with participants at the George Observatory, Needville, Texas on 16 Oct. The event is scheduled to begin at approximately 17:03 UTC. The duration of the contact is approximately 9 minutes and 30 seconds. The contact will be a telebridge between NA1SS and WH6PN. The contact should be audible over Hawaii and adjacent area. Interested parties are invited to listen in on the 145.80 MHz downlink. The contact is expected to be conducted in English. October 16, 2010 is designated as Astronomy Day at George Observatory, located in Fort Bend County, Texas, near Houston. The event is sponsored by various astronomy clubs and the Houston Museum of Natural Science. There will be plenty of activities designed to educate children, and peak their interest in astronomy and science. The children interviewing the ISS crew will be Boy Scouts and youth members of several astronomy clubs. In the evening the children will learn how to track the ISS across the night sky, will be able to look through the three telescopes at the observatory, and will be given "sky tours" with the aid of green laser pointers. Participants will ask as many of the following questions as time allows: 1. Is it hard to take a shower in space? 2. When did you decide to become an astronaut? 3. What would you do if your space suit got a hole in it? 4. Who inspired you to become an astronaut? 5. Can you describe how it feels to do a spacewalk? 6. What personal items can you take with you into space? 7. How often do you get to communicate with your family while you are in space? 8. What can you do during your free time? 9. How do you keep from getting claustrophobic? 10. What kinds of medical problems are you equipped to deal with? 11. Is it scary during launch? 12. Will being a boy scout help someone become an astronaut? 13. Do you recycle all the water on the station? 14. What is it like during liftoff? 15. What is the scariest part of your mission? 16. How do you keep track of days and nights while in space? 17. How do you decide who does what while on a mission? 18. What is the coolest part of your mission? 19. What is your typical day like? 20. IRSEA Contact Successful An Amateur Radio on the International Space Station (ARISS) contact took place between IRSEA, a non-profit Institute of Research and Education, in Bisceglie, Italy and Doug Wheelock, KF5BOC on the ISS on Tuesday, October 5, via telebridge station K6DUE in Greenbelt, Maryland. Michele Mallardi, IZ7EVR introduced the ARISS event with a presentation to an audience of 100 students and visitors. Obscurations from the ISS structure may have hindered the contact, allowing time for five questions to be answered. The contact was part of a professional education program, "Promotion of the characteristics of the Puglia region" which dealt with space communications, space life, space achievements, advantage of space research, use of man-made satellites and the International Space Station. 3. ARISSat-1 Safety Review this Week The Johnson Space Center Payload Safety Review Panel will perform a Phase 2 flight safety review of ARISSat-1 on the mornings of Wednesday and Thursday, October 13 and 14 in Houston. Participation in the review will include U.S. and Russian ARISSat team members as well as RSC-Energia safety specialists. 4. Challenger Learning Center Opens Ham Station On Monday October 4, a satellite ground station was opened at the Challenger Learning Center (CLC) in Oregon, Ohio. The station will pique students' interest in math and science and will allow the youth to contact the International Space Station. CLC will provide lesson plans and activities on amateur radio and will use the system during camps and workshops. The Toldeo Blade posted a story on the event.
