An International Space Station school contact has been planned with participants at Cradle of Aviation Museum, Garden City, NY on 04 Nov. The event is scheduled to begin at approximately 14:24 UTC. The duration of the contact is approximately 9 minutes and 30 seconds. The contact will be a telebridge between IR0ISS and IK1SLD. The contact should be audible over Italy and adjacent areas. Interested parties are invited to listen in on the 145.80 MHz downlink. The contact is expected to be conducted in English. The Cradle of Aviation Museum, (CAM) located in Garden City; New York was opened in 2002 and is one of the premier aerospace museums in the nation. The mission of the museum is to inspire future generations with the spirit of discovery through the exploration of air and space technologies, to encourage students to consider careers in science, technology, engineering, and math (STEM) while heightening the public’s awareness, understanding, and appreciation and preservation of Long Island’s role in the history and development of aviation and space technology. Our museum is home to the first magnet academy to open on Long Island. Opened in 2008, The Magnet Academy at the Cradle of Aviation has provided selected underserved high school students from several local districts who are interested in mathematics and science the unique opportunity to develop academic success through exposure to an accelerated curriculum that includes a "physics-first" science model (freshman students), mathematics, robotics, aeronautics, astronomy, and history. Participants will ask as many of the following questions as time allows: 1. Can you describe what it was like the first time you encountered microgravity in space? How difficult was it to adapt to the microgravity environment on the ISS? 2. Was there anything that your training did not prepare you for on your mission? Were there any unexpected surprises once you arrived on the ISS? 3. What was your training like for this mission? How different was it from the reality on the ISS? 4. What sort of exercises do you do in order to stay healthy? 5. Do you expect your stay in space to affect your health once you return to Earth? 6. Have you noticed any physical changes as you spend more time on the ISS? 7. What is the most difficult part of your job on board the ISS? What is the most fun? 8. Have you been out of the ISS for an EVA? How difficult is working outside in a space suit? 9. How do you spend your time when you are not working on your mission? An International Space Station school contact has been planned with participants at Warren County Technical School, Washington, NJ on 04 Nov. The event is scheduled to begin at approximately 14:08 UTC. The duration of the contact is approximately 9 minutes and 30 seconds. The contact will be direct between NA1SS and KC2WT. The contact should be audible over the east coast of the U.S. and adjacent areas. Interested parties are invited to listen in on the 145.80 MHz downlink. The contact is expected to be conducted in English. Warren County Technical School which proudly resides on Route 57 the main local artery occupies 176,000 square feet on 40 acres. Warren Tech boasts a campus style setting, which it shares with Warren County Community College, the County 911 Emergency Notification Center and the Warren County Fire Academy. This has been the school’s home since 1969. This mostly bucolic county is located in northwest New Jersey. Our student population hails from the entirety of Warren County, which borders, Morris County to the east, Sussex to the North, Hunterdon to the south and the State of Pennsylvania to the west. Currently Tech’s high school enrollment is 478 students with approximately 80 staff members. Students are enrolled in the following career areas such as, Automotive, Culinary Arts, Engineering, Theater and many others. In addition to our high school program we offer a post-secondary program, which consists of the following: * Black Seal * Cosmetology * Heating, Ventilation and Air Conditioning with Refrigeration * Licensed Practical Nursing GED classes and testing are also held in our facility. Presently seven students have their Amateur Radio license and we hold an after school radio club that runs a VE radio test session at least twice a year for our students and community. Participants will ask as many of the following questions as time allows: 1. Since astronauts have perfect vision, is it known whether there is any effect lack of gravity would have on an astigmatism? Do changes to the pressure on the vitreous humor cause any changes to the eyesight of people with perfect vision? 2. What, if any, changes in mental status can be attributed to the changes in the fluid in the sulci of the brain? 3. Are there any discernible changes to growth patterns by staph or strep bacteria? Do colony sizes or shapes change in extended zero gravity growth? 4. What is the increased rate of kidney stone growth in astronauts and how do they deal with this? 5. If there is a meteor or other space debris headed for the station, how would you assess the threat and is there any way to relocate the station? 6. How do you sleep on station without floating away? 7. What is your least favorite thing about living in space? Is the food terrible? 8. Do your eating and drinking habits change due to lack of a circadian rhythm? 9. How do you shower in space? 10. How long does it take before you become too cold to work outside of the station?" 11. What is the most difficult physical task to perform in space? Why? 12. Have you seen an alien? 13. What type of protection is necessary for UV radiation in space without the ozone layer? 14. What was your first thought when you entered the space station? Was it worth all the sacrifices? 15. Are there problems with venous blood return or lymph circulation? 16. What is the most beautiful thing or event you have seen in space? 17. What happens if there is a medical emergency on the station? 18. How does the schedule rotation for jobs work? Are there mandatory tasks that you prefer not to do? 19. Does sleeping with zero gravity while velcroed to the bed decrease back pain? Does it make you taller in space? I/we do not know the full details of what will be included in this episode but we understand a Radio contact with Chris Hadfield will be shown that involves the Canadian mentors that undertake and support these events all across Canada. This team, are made up of Teacher Lori McFarlane, technical coordination Claude Lacasse and program mentor Steve McFarlane VE3TBD all located in Ottawa but were on site during this contact from Hay river. Remotely located but very much a part of this event include Teacher Mentor Brian Jackson VE6JBJ in Calgary and fellow Canadian mentor Wayne Harasimovitch VE1WPH located in Halifax. As mentioned, exact content of the show is not known but we do know a production team from Omni productions recorded the entire presentation and event at the Hay River Public School near Yellowknife. As well, Omni productions did receive the entire video from the ISS showing Chris Hadfield answering questions during the same event. Other video including setup, meeting the show “stars” etc., was recorded but again, we are not certain of the inclusions on the show. All audio during the event was made available and Omni productions have a copy of that – this includes the Telebridge track. All we can hope is that ARISS is well represented and the program receives some well-deserved recognition. I was alerted that this is a reality TV show and almost anything can be broadcast. We are at the mercy of the producers and editors of the show – as they indicated to us – this is about Buffalo Airlines. My final comment to the producer, this show and the space program are linked in ways that are sometimes difficult to understand but it is clear that early aviation pioneers from all over the world, which Buffalo epitomizes, led to what we know today as the Space Program – ARISS is about making our youth believe anything is possible so when they say this is about Buffalo Airlines what they are really saying, this is about how we started our journey to the stars. Wallingford STEM Academy is a community based and family oriented organization that excites students about science, technology, engineering and mathematics. This program, previously known as the Young Astronaut Club of Wallingford and founded in 2000, has been providing STEM enrichment for students in grades 4 through 8 for over thirteen years through Wallingford Youth and Social Services. The Wallingford STEM Academy is a collaborative partnership between the Spanish Community of Wallingford (SCOW), the Town of Wallingford Youth and Social Services Department (WYSS), the Wallingford Education Association (WEA). STEM Academy branches in Wallingford, and Hamden, are the flagship programs for CEA’s STEM Education Initiative. We currently serve the Spanish Community of Wallingford (SCOW) and the general population. 40% of our STEM Enrichment Academy is comprised of students from the Spanish community and 40 % of our students are girls interested in STEM education. Our weekly meetings are conducted at the Spanish Community of Wallingford Great Room and in our STEM Education Classroom next to SCOW. Since 2005, a companion project to Wallingford STEM Enrichment Academy is the Wallingford Family Science and STEM Night Series. At least twice a month, we organize and implement family oriented Science and STEM Family Nights in Wallingford. These events range from evening programs, daytime vacation programs, hands-on investigations, assembly style programs, and night sky observations. The purpose of this organization is to deepen student, and family, understanding of STEM concepts as a compliment to an existing inquiry based STEM curriculum in Wallingford. Our major funders for both STEM Academy and Wallingford Family STEM Nights are the Wallingford Rotary Club’s Wallingford Foundation, 3M Charitable Contributions and the Connecticut Education Association. I/we do not know the full details of what will be included in this episode but we understand a Radio contact with Chris Hadfield will be shown that involves the Canadian mentors that undertake and support these events all across Canada. This team, are made up of Teacher Lori McFarlane, technical coordination Claude Lacasse and program mentor Steve McFarlane VE3TBD all located in Ottawa but were on site during this contact from Hay river. Remotely located but very much a part of this event include Teacher Mentor Brian Jackson VE6JBJ in Calgary and fellow Canadian mentor Wayne Harasimovitch VE1WPH located in Halifax. As mentioned, exact content of the show is not known but we do know a production team from Omni productions recorded the entire presentation and event at the Hay River Public School near Yellowknife. As well, Omni productions did receive the entire video from the ISS showing Chris Hadfield an swering questions during the same event. Other video including setup, meeting the show “stars” etc., was recorded but again, we are not certain of the inclusions on the show. All audio during the event was made available and Omni productions have a copy of that – this includes the Telebridge track. An International Space Station school contact has been planned with participants at Kopernik Observatory & Science Center (KOSC), Vestal, NY on 30 Oct. The event is scheduled to begin at approximately 16:32 UTC. The duration of the contact is approximately 9 minutes and 30 seconds. The contact will be direct between NA1SS and K2ZRO. The contact should be audible over the east coast of the U.S. and adjacent areas. Interested parties are invited to listen in on the 145.80 MHz downlink. The contact is expected to be conducted in English. The Kopernik Observatory & Science Center (KOSC) is a non-profit learning institution that promotes interdisciplinary education in the fields of Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics (STEM). Through its classes, events and programs, KOSC’s multigenerational approach emphasizes experiential, engaged and active learning as a model of STEM education in our region. Founded in 1973, KOSC has offered hundred of thousands of students of all ages the opportunity to learn about their world and the universe surrounding them. Kopernik’s resources include three permanent telescopes, a heliostat, weather station, three classrooms, photography lab, computer lab and amateur radio station. It also offers a robust outreach program where its educators go to schools to bring its programs directly into the classroom. KOSC has partnered with Binghamton High School, in Binghamton NY, to offer their students a series of classes and labs on topics such as radio communication, satellite orbits, astronomy and life on the International Space Station (ISS). Those classes and labs will help the students understand and prepare for the capstone event: a direct radio contact between the Amateur Radio Station at KOSC and an astronaut on the ISS. During that event those students will have the opportunity to directly ask an astronaut on the ISS a wide range of questions about life on the ISS and Space Exploration. Participants will ask as many of the following questions as time allows: 1. What inspired you to become an astronaut? 2. How do the stars look from space? Are they brighter or do they look the same? 3. What do you love the most about being in space that you never expected? 4. While in space is it more stressful physically or mentally? 5. Where do you see human exploration of space going in the next 50 years? 6. Tell us about your training/education to become an astronaut? 7. Did you have any fears/concerns when you first went to the ISS? 8. What do you miss most about being on earth that you never expected to miss at all? 9. What happens if you become ill on the space station? 10. What challenges do you find in living in 0g environment? 11. What is the food like on ISS? 12. How do you go to the bathroom and where does it go? Is it uncomfortable to go to the bathroom in space? 13 How much of the natural disasters taking place on Earth, such as forest fires in California or flooding in Colorado are visible from space? 14 On the ISS have you see or witnessed anything particularly peculiar? 15 Do you have any free time? Remotely located but very much a part of this event include Teacher Mentor Brian Jackson VE6JBJ in Calgary and fellow Canadian mentor Wayne Harasimovitch VE1WPH located in Halifax. As mentioned, exact content of the show is not known but we do know a production team from Omni productions recorded the entire presentation and event at the Hay River Public School near Yellowknife. As well, Omni productions did receive the entire video from the ISS showing Chris Hadfield answering questions during the same event. Other video including setup, meeting the show “stars” etc., was recorded but again, we are not certain of the inclusions on the show. All audio during the event was made available and Omni productions have a copy of that – this includes the Telebridge track. All we can hope is that ARISS is well represented and the program receives some well-deserved recognition. I was alerted that this is a reality TV show and almost anything can be broadcast. We are at the mercy of the producers and editors of the show – as they indicated to us – this is about Buffalo Airlines. My final comment to the producer, this show and the space program are linked in ways that are sometimes difficult to understand but it is clear that early aviation pioneers from all over the world, which Buffalo epitomizes, led to what we know today as the Space Program – ARISS is about making our youth believe anything is possible so when they say this is about Buffalo Airlines what they are really saying, this is about how we started our journey to the stars. For US schools to have an ARISS contact, they must fill out a proposal, submit it to NASA, and see if they are approved or not. Once a school is approved and put on the list, an ARISS mentor will be assigned to assist the school. NASA will have two open windows a year for schools to submit a proposal. The window for contacts during the second half of 2012 has already closed. Look for the window for first half 2013 contacts later this year. You must go through NASA to get the proposal material.
