EXPEDITION 14 CREW LANDS SAFELY

They landed safely southwest of Karaganda, Kazakhstan at 8:31 a.m. EDT. (1231 GMT) Back on the station is Expedition 15 Commander Fyodor Yurchikhin and flight engineers Oleg Kotov and Suni Williams. Williams had been a member of Expedition 14 since December. She will remain with Expedition 15 until this summer. While we don’t yet understand all that’s happened, our hearts and prayers go out to the families and coworkers who lost their loved ones today and to the survivor who endured a tragic ordeal. Violence of this kind is always difficult to understand. In the days to come, you may find yourself experiencing a variety of physical or emotional reactions. If you’d like to talk with someone, there are resources to help you. Please call the Employee Assistance Program at ext. 36130. As we learn more about this event and its causes, we’ll share that information as we can. In the meantime, please take this time to care for yourself and the people around you. ------------------------------------------------------------------------ *Details of Shooting Incident at Johnson Space Center* Friday evening, JSC Director Mike Coats and Houston Police held a joint press conference, where the names of the victim and the alleged gunman were announced . The male victim was determined to be David Beverly, a NASA civil servant. Co-worker Fran Crenshaw, an employee of MRI, was the female hostage. The alleged gunman was Bill Phillips, a Jacobs Sverdrup contractor employee with NASA for 12-13 years. Initially, police responded to a report of a person with a weapon at JSC's Building 44 at about 2:40 p.m. EDT. At an earlier briefing, a police spokesman said they were never able to establish communication with the gunman. Counselors available for all Johnson employees who need assistance. An International Space Station Expedition 15 ARISS school contact has been planned with students at Kingston Elementary School, Virginia Beach, Virginia, USA on 23 April. The event is scheduled to begin at approximately 18:43 UTC. The contact will be a direct between stations NA1SS and KN4KL. The contact should be audible in eastern portions of North America. Interested parties are invited to listen in on the 145.80 MHz downlink. The participants are expected to conduct the conversation in English. Kingston Elementary School is a kindergarten through fifth grade school in the Little Neck/ King's Grant area of Virginia Beach, Virginia. With approximately 600 students , the school is fully accredited according to state and national standards. The entire student body has been involved with preparing for its contact with Sunita Williams aboard the space station. Students will ask as many of the following questions as time allows: 1. How long does it take to get ready for a spacewalk? 2. How do you exercise in space? 3. What kind of food do you eat and is it good? 4. How do you keep food from floating away when eating? 5. What experiments are you doing in space, and how does gravity affect them? 6. How much water and basic supplies do you take up? 7. How do you communicate with NASA, your family and friends? 8. What do Earth, Moon and the planets look like from space? 9. Can you tell day and night when looking out in space? 10. Have you ever seen an eclipse while in the Space Station? 11. What landforms and sights can you see from the Space Station? 12. How many times have you been outside the Space Station, and what did you do there? 13. How fast does the space shuttle travel? 14. How long can you stay on a spacewalk? 15. Do you ever get lonely? 16. What were your goals as a child, and who was your role model? 17. What books do you like to read? 18. Have you ever seen a meteorite or comet while in space? 19. What do you do when it is time to sleep? 20 Have you had any problems on the Space Station? The Scuola Europea Varese is an international co-educational day school for students from pre-school at age 4 to graduation at age 18. The school has more than 1300 students from all over Europe. How much water is stored on the ISS? How long will it last? 8. Do you have showers on board? 9. Are your meals tasty? Are there any raw vegetables in your diet? 10. Could you cultivate vegetables in a specially designed area on board the ISS? 11. Do you experiment on board with algae and bacteria? 12. Is there a place where the organic waste is stored? 13. Are astronauts also medical doctors? Have you been trained to deal with medical emergencies? 14. Does microgravity affects your blood vessel system? 15. Are all the members of the team required to go on space walks or are some of them required to stay on board at all times? 16. At the speed the ISS travel, is it possible to detect objects such as meteors crossing its orbit? Is there a radar station on board? 17. What are the security features that could be activated in case of a meteor impact? 18. If a landing with the emergency shuttle was required, how long would it take to reach the Earth? 19. Expedition 14 Preps for Trip Home

SUBMITTED BY ARTHUR N1ORC - AMSAT A/C #31468 *Expedition 14 Preps for Trip Home* Expedition 14 Commander Michael Lopez-Alegria, Flight Engineer Mikhail Tyurin and Spaceflight Participant Charles Simonyi are making preparations for their trip home. Members of both Expedition 14 and Expedition 15 are continuing crew rotation and handover activities, as well as prepacking hardware for return and disposal in the Soyuz TMA-9 spacecraft. The returning crew is scheduled to leave the station early Saturday and will land northeast of Arkalyk, which is southeast of the usual landing site in Kazakhstan. The landing was delayed a day and moved farther south because wet ground at the initial site precluded helicopter operations there. Tim, Typing error on my part. My rig was set to 144.490. I was wondering if the packet uplink of 145.99 was being used. That happened to me once before. They weren't listening on the usual voice uplink. Thanks for the correction on my post..
