An International Space Station school contact has been planned with participants at Centre scolaire de Berlaymont in Waterloo, Belgium on 22 June. The event is scheduled to begin at approximately 12:15 UTC. The duration of the contact is approximately 9 minutes and 23 seconds. The contact will be a telebridge between NA1SS and W6SRJ. The contact should be audible over the west coast of the U.S. Interested parties are invited to listen in on the 145.80 MHz downlink. The contact is expected to be conducted in English or Dutch. The Berlaymont School Center is located in a rural area of Waterloo, Belgium. The school is truly international in that their primary grades consist 500 pupils of 21 different nationalities taught by 32 teachers. In addition, their secondary school has a student population of 1000. Students in the 6th primary level are tasked with a project called "Cap Ten", subsidized by several private enterprises. To carry out this project, the students choose a science related subject in which they perform substantial research. This consists of developing questions relative to the subject, consulting with experts knowledgable in the field, possibly inviting a specialist as part of the final presentation which takes place at the end of the school year. One of these projects involved the class meeting with a radio amateur which resulted in the school being chosen for this contact. Participants will ask as many of the following questions (translated) as time allows: 1. What is it like to be in Space? What do you feel? 2. Is the Earth beautiful, seen from Space? 3. What does Space look like? 4. Which details of the Earth (wall of China or others) do you recognize? 5. Is it true that you can see Belgium at night because of the lights? 6. Did you cross meteorites? 7. Do you observe the effect of pollution on the environment? 8. Which planets do you from Space? 9. Do you observe natural phenomena (tornados)? 10.How do you manage to wash yourself? 11.How can you take food with you for so long a time? 12.Is the food good? 13.Is it true that you are attached when you go to bed? 14.Which are the main objectives of the mission? 15.Why have you to leave for so long a time? 16.What is the difference between a long-term mission and a short one in terms of preparation? 17.Which medical progress will result from research on weightlessness? 18.Did you go on a spacewalk since you are onboard? 19.What physical condition is required for space travel? 20.Why did you choose this profession? 21.For how many years have you been a radio amateur? 22.How often can you talk to your relatives? 23.Can you look to the sun without burning your eyes, as on earth? 24 What are your activities in a working day? 25.Thank you for answering our questions and good luck on your mission! Amateur Radio on the International Space Station (ARISS) Status Report June 15, 2009 1. ARISS Contact with Tongfu Primary School, China Youth attending Tongfu Road No. 1 Primary School in Guangzhou, Guangdong, P.R. China experienced an Amateur Radio on the International Space Station (ARISS) contact on Thursday, June 11. Astronaut Michael Barratt, KD5MIJ answered 19 questions put to him by the students as an audience of approximately 465 people looked on. Extensive media coverage included seven television stations, three radio stations and ten newspapers. 2. Successful ARISS Contact with Italian School On Friday, June 12, children from several schools in L'Aquila, Abruzzo, Italy took part in an Amateur Radio on the International Space Station (ARISS) contact. Approximately 200 students and guests, including European Space Agency (ESA) and Agenzia Spaziale Italiana (ASI) representatives, attended the event. ESA astronaut Samantha Cristoforetti gave presentations on ISS missions and ESA/ASI activities. Astronaut Frank DeWinne, ON1DWN answered 13 questions on the first pass and another 7 questions on the following pass. Many television stations, including CANALE 5 and SKY, radio stations and newspapers provided media coverage. Internet video streaming had more than 6,500 connections. 3. Belgian Students Speak with Frank De Winne An Amateur Radio on the International Space Station (ARISS) contact took place on Friday, June 12 between Vrije Basisschool Terbank-Egenhoven in Heverlee, Belgium and Frank DeWinne ON1DWN on the ISS. Telebridge station ON4ISS in Belgium assisted with the contact. Twenty-two questions were answered during the nine minute pass, delighting the audience of 400 children, parents and guests. Four television stations and two radio broadcast stations with national and regional audiences covered the event. During the main evening news, a detailed report on telebridge ground station ON4ISS was broadcast by the national television service. 4. Astronaut Training Status Astronaut Doug Wheelock passed his amateur radio licensing exam and was issued the callsign KF5BOC. He is scheduled to be part of Expedition 24 along with Shannon Walker, KD5DXB and Aleksandr Skvortsov. On June 9, Wheelock also received Amateur Radio on the International Space Station (ARISS) training on basic radio operations. 5. Australia Journalist Takes Interest in ARISS A local journalist in Kingston, Australia has taken an interest in Amateur Radio on the International Space Station (ARISS) and given great publicity to the program over the past three years. An International Space Station school contact has been planned with participants at Vrije Basisschool Terbank-Egenhoven, Heverlee, Belgium on 12 June. The event is scheduled to begin at approximately 11:38 UTC. The contact will be a telebridge between OR4ISS and ON4ISS. The contact should be audible over eastern Europe. Interested parties are invited to listen in on the 145.80 MHz downlink. The contact will be conducted in Dutch. Heverlee is a suburb of the city of Leuven. Vrije Basisschool is located near the science and engineering campuses of a local university in addition to a number of research centers. In preparation for this contact, the school has added engaging projects to their curriculum involving the physical, biological, environmental and other concerns faced by crew members during a space mission. In addition, the students carried out hands on experiments similar to those performed onboard the ISS, allowing them a better understanding of the crew members' daily tasks in space. Participants will ask as many of the following questions (translated) as time allows: 1. What do you feel when you look at the Earth from space? 2. What do you eat? Is it tasteful? 3. How can you wash your clothing in the ISS? 4. How cold is it in space? 5. Did you ever cross another spaceship? 6. Do you see the difference between day and night in space? 7. An International Space Station school contact has been planned with participants at Liceo Scientifico "A. Bafile", L'Aquila, Abruzzo, Italy on 12 June. The event is scheduled to begin at approximately 06:52 UTC. The duration of the contact is approximately 9 minutes and 52 seconds. The contact will be direct between OR4ISS and IZ6BAJ. The contact should be audible over Italy. Interested parties are invited to listen in on the 145.80 MHz downlink. The contact is expected to be conducted in English. On April 6, 2009, L'Aquila, Italy and the surrounding area was rocked by a 6.7 magnitude earthquake. Needless to say, the area suffered much damage with a reported 300 people killed and 70,000 left homeless. As a result, the Liceo Scientifico "A. Bafile" school along with other secondary schools is currently operating under a tent provided by the Italian Ministry of Education (MIUR) and the Civil Defense (DPC). Teachers are redesigning their educational proposals in order to keep the attention of students that are still shocked by the quake. They believe that an ARISS School Contact can surely give them a wider look on their future. All local and national TV and newspaper media, continuously present in L'Aquila after the earthquake, will be invited. Participants will ask as many of the following questions as time allows: 1. ISS on Field Day 2

Hi again: I posted the question?yesterday about the availability of ISS on Field?Day because we are less than 20 days away, and normally someone would be asking, sometimes it's the only time when?contacts are possible. Plus?viewing the latest Shuttle Mission info?I realized that there could be a great possibility that ISS can be on-the-air. I remember on FD 2004 I worked Mike Fincke with the KP4ES call on the first pass on Sunday, and on the second the others worked with their callsigns (and were pretty exicted, even have a small video of it). If by any means the ISS is not on the air, at least will try to give a shot on the other birds, and will follow the info on the cubesats. Thanks again, Angel Santana - WP3GW
