An International Space Station school contact has been planned with participants at Holy Family Catholic School, Grand Junction, Colorado on 19 Nov. The event is scheduled to begin at approximately 16:43 UTC. The duration of the contact is approximately 9 minutes and 30 seconds. The contact will be direct between NA1SS and W0YH. The contact should be audible over portions of the western U.S. Interested parties are invited to listen in on the 145.80 MHz downlink. The contact is expected to be conducted in English. Holy Family Catholic School has more than 400 students in first through ninth grades, and is located in Grand Junction, Colorado. The entire school is involved in this project. At least ten students have obtained their ham radio licenses in anticipation of the contact. Younger students have participated in essay contests and art activities devoted to the contact with the ISS. Participants will ask as many of the following questions as time allows: 1. How many times have you been in space? 2. How do you choose your food to meet dietary needs? 3. Do you get bored with some of the foods? 4. What made you decide to become an astronaut? 5. What do you do with your spare time in space? 6. What effect does long-term exposure to zero gravity have on your body? 7. Has becoming an astronaut been worth leaving your home on Earth? 8. How do you prepare for the shuttle launch and landing? 9. How does it feel to be weightless? 10. Have you studied any life forms in space? 11. What are the different jobs or duties on the space station? 12. What job do you have on the space station? 13. What's your favorite thing about being in space? 14. How much training do you have before going into space? 15. Is it cold in space? 16. How does the Earth look from space? 17. How does working in no gravity differ from the same job on Earth? 18. How do feel about the robonaut working on the space station? 19. What is the strangest thing that has happened to you in space? 20. What is the cabin pressure maintained in the space station? Amateur Radio on the International Space Station (ARISS) Status Report November 15, 2010 1. Upcoming School Contact Euro Space Center (ESC), Transinne, Belgium has been scheduled for an Amateur Radio on the International Space Station (ARISS) contact on Tuesday, November 16 at 19:42 UTC via telebridge station VK5ZAI in Australia. ESC is a Space Expo, which is open to the public, as well as a Space Camp for youth. Amateur radio club station ON4ESC is located in the auditorium and VHF/UHF tracking antennas are permanently installed on a tower. Twenty-four English speaking students, ages 10-14 from the International School Zurich North (Switzerland), attending the Space Camp, will participate in the ARISS contact. 2. St. Louis Charter School Contact Successful On Thursday, November 11, an Amateur Radio on the International Space Station (ARISS) contact was held between astronaut Shannon Walker, KD5DXB and St. Louis Charter School, St. Louis, Missouri. The school integrated the ARISS contact into its science curriculum covering the solar system, space exploration and space missions. Students took part in several hands on activities and research papers to prepare for the contact. 3. Amateur Radio Newsline Covers ARISS On November 12, the Amateur Radio Newsline Report 1735 ran an ARISS news item under the heading Ham Radio in Space. "Astronauts Take Part in Ground Based ARISS Training Exercise" covers the simulated contacts that Joe Acaba, KE5DAR and Aki Hoshide, KE5DNI participated in with students from Ralph McCall School in Alberta, Canada. An International Space Station school contact has been planned with participants at Euro Space Center, Transinne, Belgium on 16 Nov. The event is scheduled to begin at approximately 19:42 UTC. The duration of the contact is approximately 9 minutes and 30 seconds. The contact will be a telebridge between NA1SS and VK5ZAI. The contact should be audible over portions of Europe. Interested parties are invited to listen in on the 145.80 MHz downlink. The contact is expected to be conducted in English. Euro Space Center is a residential Space Camp (US licence) located in Belgium and hosting students from all over Europe and abroad. This week there are 24 students aged 10-14 from the International School of Zurich North who will have the privilege to talk with an astronaut aboard the ISS. Participants will ask as many of the following questions as time allows: 1. What's the view from Space like? 2. How does it feel living in a spaceship for so many weeks? 3. How long have you been in space? Where were you in space? 4. How was it being in Space? Did you like it? 5. How did you feel when the countdown started and there was no way back? 6. At which age did you want to be an astronaut? 7. What things do you measure or sample in space? 8. How did you need to train mentally? 9. How do you recycle food and water in space? 10. Does it make you sick when you first take off? 11. Are you relieved when you come back from space safely? 12. What do you do so you don't get bored in the spaceship? 13. Why did you choose to be an astronaut? How long have you been an astronaut? 14. How long did you have to exercise physically to go into space? 15. Why does the sky look blue from Earth but black in space? 16. Were there any problems when you were in space? 17. During take off do you ever think that you may never return to Earth? 18. ARISS-Audio ESC Contact 16 November

Please join us in listening to the ISS contact with the Euro Space Center on Tuesday 16 November at 19:42 UTC. This will be a telebridge and the Ground Station will be VK5ZAI. Audio from this contact will be fed into the EchoLink *AMSAT* (101377) and *JK1ZRW* (277208) servers and IRLP Discovery Reflector Node 9010. Audio is generally transmitted around 15 minutes prior to the contact taking place so that you can hear some of the preparation that occurs. Please note that on Echolink & IRLP there are breaks of 1.5 seconds in the audio transmission. These occur every 2.5 minutes during the event. ** Contact times are approximate.
