Don't jump to any conclusions. Wait for the AMSAT engineering people to give you the current and CORRECT information. If any info comes from anyone else, it is not a direct contact with the Space Station people. An International Space Station school contact has been planned with participants at Matsumoto School for the Visually Impaired, Matsumoto, Nagano, Japan on 8 July. The event is scheduled to begin at approximately 08:31 UTC. The duration of the contact is approximately 9 minutes and 30 seconds. The contact will be direct between NA1SS and 8N0MM. The contact should be audible over Japan and adjacent areas. Interested parties are invited to listen in on the 145.80 MHz downlink. The language used during the contact is yet to be determined. Matsumoto School for the Visually Impaired was founded in 1912, has 29 students from infancy to 65 years old. Our class is divided into the kindergarten division, the elementary school division, the junior high school division, and the advanced level division of oriental therapy (acupuncture, moxibustion and anma-massage-shiatsu treatment). Participants will ask as many of the following questions as time allows: 1. In space, can you do jump rope? 2. What music do you like to listen to? 3. What food do you eat everyday? 4. Is it beautiful to look around in space? 5. In space, do you have earthquakes or calamities? 6. In space, what is the most surprising thing? 7. Why is space black and dark? 8. Amateur Radio on the International Space Station (ARISS) Status Report July 4, 2011 1. Upcoming School Contact An Amateur Radio on the International Space Station (ARISS) contact has been scheduled for Matsumoto School for the Visually Impaired, Matsumoto, Nagano, Japan on Friday, July 8 at 08:31 UTC. The school was founded in 1912 and has 29 students of all ages. All of the students have one or more disabilities. Participating in this NASA education program will give students the opportunity to practice their English and learn more about the International Space Station. This will increase their interest in space and promote international communication. 2. Italian Contact not Successful An Amateur Radio on the International Space Station (ARISS) contact was scheduled for the Youth Hostel "La Foresta" in Perugia, Italy on Friday, July 1. Due to technical difficulties, the contact did not take place. ARISS is looking into the problem. 3. Amateur Radio Newsline on U.S. ARISS Proposals On July 1, the Amateur Radio Newsline Report 1768 included a story on the new ARISS proposal process for U.S. schools. Proposal (ARISS on ISS): 1) Install a 100-KHz transponder unit on ISS, with usual digital beacon/engineering 2) It would run mode-UV 3) Installed internally in the ISS 4) Replace most of the current ISS ham radio equipment 5) Could be considered an upgrade/improvement to the existing ham radio on ISS 6) Use ISS power and existing ham radio antenna infrastructure (no solar panels)(no thermal requirements for space environ)(perhaps less radiation hardening) 7) Use batteries for stand-alone operation (recharged from ISS power) 8) Control commanded from ground (no intervention required by astronauts) 9) Local access for use of astronaut-hams 10) Provide emergency back-up comms for ISS (perhaps with a separate FM channel) 11) (perhaps) Use of existing ham-radio handheld on ISS on low-power to dedicated receiver which would activate astronaut repeater channel. 12) This FM channel could be used as FM ham repeater when not in use by astronauts (means world-wide monitoring for the astronauts as well as normal Leo FM activity) 13) Modular design for future upgrades and/or repair (easy installation by astronauts-plug*n*play) 14) Segmented pass-band to allow packet/APRS digipeating 15) Transmitters able to be shut down for eva and other critical missions either locally on ISS or from ground. 16) Perhaps a special Rx/Tx on ISS eva channel for cross-band repeat in event of loss of atmosphere emergency (help to sell the concept to NASA as a comms back-up). 17) No need for orientation (spin or de-spin), rad hardening, thermal structures (air-cooled), no propulsion, no launch requirements. 18) Easily maintained by supply from ground (repairs or upgrades). 19) Long-Life Re-direct of either Fox or P3E efforts? An International Space Station school contact has been planned with participants at Youth Hostel "La Foresta", near Castel Rigone, Trasimeno Lake, Perugia, Italy on 1 July. The event is scheduled to begin at approximately 14:48 UTC. The duration of the contact is approximately 9 minutes and 30 seconds. The contact will be direct between OR4ISS and IK0WGF. The contact should be audible over Italy. Interested parties are invited to listen in on the 145.80 MHz downlink. The contact is expected to be conducted in English. Since 2009, at the Youth Hostel « La Foresta », near Trasimeno Lake and Perugia, Panda Adventure organizes one of its most interesting educational programme : « Astronauts in Forest » for about 200 children from 11 to 14 years. The programme combines the study of Earth with the study of Space and Space exploration and a big role game. Children are invited to imagine themselves as « Aliens » landed on our Planet from the space, and to participate every day to a different "Mission" to know the environmental problems of the Earth and try to find solutions to them. The Hostel has been equipped with two big hemispheres (two "space ships") placed in the forest and equipped with laboratories, GPS instruments, telescope, big screen to project films, computers, sky maps, library with educational materials. It has been the first program of this kind in Italy and strengthened the cooperation with ESA / ESRIN that gave a very important contribution providing the camp with educational materials. All the activities consisted in field researches, experiments, use of technical instruments, and games to explore the Earth and the Sky, to research solutions to save our Planet. Every day a log - book was kept by children. Every Mission had a filmed report by children. Every evening a film or a documentary on Earth or Space was shown. The programme "Astronauts in Forest" and the activities' reports of the summer camps always arises a lot of interest. They have a large circulation through Panda Avventure web site and social network. Generally Panda Adventure organizes also media coverage through News letter and contacts with newspaper and magazines. Participants will ask as many of the following questions as time allows: 1. How was the travel from earth to the ISS? 2. Is it noisy in the ISS? 3. In our hostel we recycle the water from the rain for the toilet, Is it true that you too recycle all the water and liquid in the ISS? 4. We are living in a forest: have you got any plant in the ISS? 5. We read that every morning a different music awoke you. Which was this morning? 6. We are attending a camp in the nature, training to become astronauts, could you please give us a trick for our training? 7. As you on the ISS, we too work with other people in our team and share all our time together. Sometimes living together is difficult. Is the same for you? 8. What do you miss mostly of nature? 9. How hot is inside and outside the ISS? 10. Now you are above the clouds! How is to live so many days without rain? 11. Does your hair grow faster in the ISS? 12. We heard that a lot of astronauts lost their smell sense in the space. Did it happen to you? 13. What do you do to relax yourself? 14. Can you see the moon phases from your window? 15. Which was your dream job when you were a little kid? 16. Have you brought something with you from home on ISS? 17. Do you think that we are alone in the universe? 18.
