Mail Server Upgrade - Please Read
AMSAT Community, Please see below regarding the recent upgrade of the email system.
*AMSAT-NA Mailman Upgrades*
AMSAT’s IT team has been working to upgrade the Mailman software that supports mailing lists (aka reflectors, listserv, BB, etc). This upgrade became necessary for several reasons, one of which was the release of a new major revision of the Mailman software itself. The new version of Mailman has many improvements, including: an updated web UI, management of all list memberships with a single account, and a web UI for searching and browsing archives.
The upgrade requires existing mail list users to sign up for a “new” account, which will be used to manage their existing list subscriptions and preferences. This will also require everyone to validate their preferences, aliases (if any), etc. Most existing preferences from the previous version of Mailman did not migrate. Please see the procedures below. Please contact postmaster@amsat.org with any questions or concerns regarding this upgrade.
*Procedures to Signup for New Mailman List Service*
• Visit https://mailman.amsat.org
• Click “Signup” in the top right corner.
• Fill out the form. For username, it is recommended that you use your e-mail address.
• You will receive a confirmation e-mail. Click the link in the e-mail, and then click the “Confirm” button.
• Login with your new AMSAT-NA Mailman account.
• Navigate to the User Profile/Settings area by clicking the dropdown at the top right, and selecting “Account” – or Click Here.
• Fill in your First Name, Last Name, time zone and click the “Update” button.
• If you have alternate e-mail addresses you use to subscribe to lists, they can be added using the “E-mail Addresses” tab.
*Notable Changes from Previous Version of Mailman*
• A single account is used to manage your subscription and preferences (and list settings if you are a list owner). Delivery preferences, account updates, and subscription changes can all be made for any list you are a member of, with a single account.
• All archives are now searchable in a web-based interface. See https://mailman.amsat.org/hyperkitty or click the Archives link at the top of the site.
• All e-mails from the Mailman system are encrypted in transit.
• The mail server itself has an updated SPAM detection infrastructure, and improved validation of inbound and outbound messages. This should result in more reliable SPAM detection, and also improved “whitelisting” of legitimate AMSAT-NA e-mails.
When I receive emails with attachments, asking me to click links, I am inherently suspicious. I believe the email below is legit, but would like some public discussion to verify its legitimacy.
Thanks and 73, Joe kk0sd

It is. The PDF is just the instructions given below, so if you are concerned, just print the original email for your records.

It's certainly a great idea to be on your toes when it comes to possible cyber attacks - so kudos to the stations who are suspect.
However, this appears to be a legitimate e-mail/request.
1) We knew these updates were coming, and 2) if you evaluate the contents of the message they do direct you to the AMSAT site. The text does match up with the actual link and the second-level domain is the AMSAT-NA website. [image: image.png]
Having said that, if you still need additional proof, I'm sure the official AMSAT folks will chime in.
As I said previously to Joe (when he announced the update), thanks to all the folks who supported this update.

OK chaps. With the assurances I received, I’ve bitten the bullet and done as the mailman recommends. The whole process was quite innocuous and did prove the point of it being totally innocent. But I still say: Do not take messages at face value and thus investigate further without implementing any changes, Take advice from those who could/should know, and if still unsure, undertake further investigation, ask for comments, and by taking further advice. And if confidence is garnered then go for it! My own thoughts concur with one of the comments that suggested a callsign may have given more assurance and comfort from the outset; allowing a reasonable degree of qualification. Anyway, all’s well that ends well. But don’t click on the postage stamp below ;-)) 73 to one and all ______________ Roger Reeves M0ROJ@goldford.co.uk IO83pb

Folks, I understand your concern. I get plenty of spam too, but listen to Alan. This is real. You don't hear from Matt Alberti very often but he is on the AMSAT IT team. I have done the transition for some of the internal mailing lists, so I can tell you that the bb mail will likely continue to flow if you do nothing. You will need to sign up for any of the following:
1) You have email aliases (that is you send from more than the same email address that you get your bb mail on) 2) You ever want to turn on "vacation mode", that is temporarily turn off your bb mail. 3) If you get digests, I'm not sure if you will continue to. You will have to sign up to change this setting. 4) If you ever want to look at the bb archives you may have to sign up.
I hope this helps, and good for you for being careful and suspicious. Of course you don't need to believe me either :-)

Sigh. I should add that mailman also manages a lot of internal mailing lists for small groups of us to communicate on different topics. At least some of these other mailing lists become visible when you create an account. However, if you try to sign up for them, the request comes to the owner of the list, and we will not accept them unless you are part of that small group.
Please do not try to sign up for other groups. It just creates work for us. We'll have to try to figure out if we can separate these out and make them less visible and tempting :-)
Thanks!

One artifact of all this is that the server seems to have forgotten email distribution settings --- I was set to ‘no emails’, and now I am getting everything.

My email confirmation email finally arrived 6 plus hours after sign up in the new system. The system said it should only take a few minutes. The new system had my two lists transferred from the old system. I guess all is done.

Very odd, but it reminds me of something else: Some of my address confirmations got thrown into my spam folder, so you have to look around carefully.

Same here, Ernie. I created a filter this morning that's working. Although, I get a banner at the top of each message basically flagging it at potential spam and saying it would of been filed there if I didn't have a filter.
Sounds like the gang is working out a few bugs, as expected.

I did exactly as the email said to do it. You have to create a new account. The lists you are currently signed up for do transfer over for you automatically. I had no problem. You should have no problem as long as you follow the steps one at a time as it says in the email from Matthew Alberti matthewalberti@gmail.com the instructions are also in the pdf file he attached to the email. Folks, you need to create a whole new account with a non-email username. Include your email (or maybe you add it afterwards) and it will connect you will the mailing list that you are on. So the deal is that your mailman login is NOT your email address. I hope that helps. I wrote something about it to others when we converted some local lists. Let me see if I can find it.

Ok, here it is. And remember most of you are only on the bb. Please do not subscribe to any of the internal lists if you see them (we are trying to fix that).
First, you have a single account on mailman. You can login at
mailman.amsat.org. If you have not done so before, you will need to create an account with a username (not just an email address). You also specify your email address when you create this account. When you do that you will automatically find that you can access info about the lists you are subscribed to
(in this case specifically the bb)
But here is the key. When you go to your account profile, you can add additional email addresses and designate one of them to be primary. The primary email is where you get mail from the lists, but you can also send from the other addresses that you add.
So it is working as expected. It was just not terribly clear what to expect. Sorry about that...

Burns WB1FJ (not doing IT, but I was a guinea pig for this conversion)

Ok, I have discovered that I was wrong on one point (thanks Rich). You CAN use your email address as a username. Just recognize that you are still CREATING A NEW ACCOUNT even if your email address is already signed up for a mailing list. And also you have to use the account section in the upper right (thanks Frank). Do not select a list before you create your account.
Hoping this helps...73,

First, you have a single account on mailman. You can login at
mailman.amsat.org. If you have not done so before, you will need to create an account with a username (not just an email address). You also specify your email address when you create this account. When you do that you will automatically find that you can access info about the lists you are subscribed to
(in this case specifically the bb)
But here is the key. When you go to your account profile, you can add additional email addresses and designate one of them to be primary. The primary email is where you get mail from the lists, but you can also send from the other addresses that you add.
So it is working as expected. It was just not terribly clear what to expect. Sorry about that...

I hope that someone sends out a tutorial again about this. Someone helped and got me back on the list but I have no idea how to make changes or what my password is. And it still doesn't seem to recognize that I'm a member.

AMSAT Community, Please see below regarding the recent upgrade of the email system.
AMSAT-NA Mailman Upgrades
AMSAT’s IT team has been working to upgrade the Mailman sof tware that supports mailing lists (aka reflectors, listserv, BB, etc).
Procedures to Signup for New Mailman List Service
Notable Changes from Previous Version of Mailman

Folks,
If you *fully read* through Matthew's instructions, below, and follow exactly those instructions, I believe you'll find the mail upgrade process quite painless. The steps are straightforward, and Matthew does state that preferences did not migrate, so you'll need to update them after you've got your account set up.
There's been a lot of mail about issues people are having. It seems to me that a significant proportion of those come from people trying to wing it and / or not reading in detail before starting.
