AMSAT-NA has an Operations Group and email address for AO-51 satellite
users to submit requests and ideas for the Experimenters Wednesday
sessions. The group will also take suggestions for the normal weeklong
operational periods as well. Every member of the Operations Group will
receive emails from this address. This is your chance, the amateur
satellite user, to request from the AO-51 Operations Group the modes you
are interested in seeing operated on the satellite during the weekly
Wednesday sessions. Do not expect a reply to every email, as there will
not be time to respond to each one, but your input will be noted. The
email address to send your requests or ideas to the Operations Group is:
ao51-modes(a)amsat.org
The AO-51 Operations Group is made up of AMSAT Members who are also
AO-51 users. The Operations Group works with the Command Team to create
the monthly schedule for the satellite.

To switch the transmitter on, you need to send a CTCSS tone of 74.4 Hz.
The order of operation is thus: (allow for Doppler as necessary)
1) Transmit on 145.850 MHz with a tone of 74.4 Hz to arm the 10 minute
timer
on board the spacecraft.
2) Now transmit on 145.850 MHz (FM Voice) using 67.0 Hz to PT the
repeater
on and off within the 10 Minute window.
3) Sending the 74.4 tone again within the 10 minute window will reset
the 10
minute timer.

This off the AO-27 website:
For the last 5 weeks ground controllers have been trying to contact
AO-27. At
this point we have not been able to turn it on. We still have a few
tricks
that we are planning on trying but these take time. We are hoping that
we can
re-establish communications.
At this time, we don't have an estimate for when AO-27 will be back on
the
air.
AO-27 is now in its 14th year on orbit. We will continue to try to
recover
AO-27 until we run out of ideas.

the
satellite. It was last heard on 05 May, just one day before the solar
eclipses were due to start. These eclipses will continue until 04 August
2006, reaching a maximum duration of 22% around 19 June. If the
satellite
behaves in the same way as it did last year, regular 10 day
transmissions
should re-start, sometime in August.

Japanese HITSAT Designated as HO-59
AMSAT News Service Bulletin 295.01
From AMSAT HQ SILVER SPRING, MD.
October 22, 2006
To All RADIO AMATEURS
BID: $ANS-295.01
AMSAT's OSCAR Designation Coordinator, Bill Tynan, W3XO announced this
week that the Japanese HITSAT satellite has been given an OSCAR number.
Bill wrote to the HITSAT Team at the Hokkaido Institute of Technology,
"By the authority vested in me by the AMSAT-NA President, I am pleased
to issue an OSCAR number for the HIT-SAT amateur radio satellite. From
what I can determine, HIT-SAT complies with all of the requirements for
an OSCAR number. Therefore, HIT-SAT will henceforth be known as
HIT-SAT-OSCAR-59 or HO-59."
Bill concluded with, "AMSAT-NA and I wish to congratulate you and your
entire team for the successful construction, testing and launching of
HIT-SAT. Your work inspires others to follow your lead."
The CubeSat has the callsign JR8YJT. At present it is transmitting
CW telemetry on 437.275 MHz with a transmitter power of 100 mW. The
1200 baud FM Packet downlink on 437.425 MHz is active only when the
satellite is over Japan.
Once it's fully operational, HIT-SAT will permit Earth station opera-
tors to request certain parameters by transmitting DTMF commands on
the 145.980 MHz uplink. The satellite can report back time/date, temp-
erature and power supply voltages and thank the Earth station by call
sign. Only HIT-SAT ground station controllers can access the satellite
at this point, however.
[ANS thanks Bill Tynan, W3XO for the above information]

Michael, N3UC, one of AO-27's controllers reported on October 17, "For
the last 5 weeks ground controllers have been trying to contact AO-27.
At this point we have not been able to turn it on. We still have a few
tricks that we are planning on trying but these take time. We are hoping
that we can re-establish communications. At this time, we don't have an
estimate for when AO-27 will be back on the air. The satellite is now
in its 14th year on orbit. We will continue to try to recover AO-27
until we run out of ideas."
AO-27 was last heard in May 2006 prior to its entering its eclipse
season. When the satellite's solar cells were not receiving enough
illumination it meanth the batteries are dropping below the watchdog
values and turning off the controller schedule.

heard by Peter ZL3TC, October 18, and later by Paul KB5MU. It had
been silent since August 26. Many thanks for those reports."
OSCAR-11 requires illumination of its solar panels to work. Clive
continued, "I heard very strong signals on October 19 07:28 UTC pass.
If the watchdog cycle continues to operate normally, the 145.826 MHz.
beacon should transmit until around 28 October."

Gunther, W8GSM, AMSAT Treasurer said this week, "Often AMSAT
members have asked if they can make a contribution to AMSAT via
their local United Way drive?"
According to Leslie J. Talley, Director, Community and Public
Sector Workplace Campaigns at the National U-W office who informed
Gunther that there are NO national agencies within U-W. Every agency
that wishes to be eligible to receive donations must go through that
local U-W campaign office and seek approval.
Gunther continues, "With that in mind, I would encourage anyone who
wishes to make such a gift to call their local U-W director and ask
if they will allow such a gift to AMSAT. AMSAT does not have the
staff to canvas the country and establish these hundreds of relation-
ships."
One alternative is to just reduce your U-W gift and write a check
to AMSAT. Both are tax deductible as charitable donations. (Check
with your individual tax advisor to review your specific circumstances
and deductibility).
U.S. Federal Employees - Again this year AMSAT is a member of the
Combined Federal Campaign (CFC). The mission of the CFC is to promote
and support philanthropy through a program that is employee focused,
cost-efficient, and effective in providing all federal employees the
opportunity to improve the quality of life for all. As the world's
largest and most successful annual workplace giving campaign, each year,
more than 300 CFC campaigns throughout the country and internationally
help to raise millions of dollars for eligible non-profit organizations.
Gunther Meisse, AMSAT treasurer has announced that any Federal employee
can make a contribution to your Radio Amateur Satellite Corporation when
they complete their pledge for 2006.
AMSAT is listed as Agency Number CFC 2944
Your contribution directly supports AMSAT's educational outreach and
satellite construction projects including work on AMSAT-Eagle. Pledges
may be made by Federal civilian, postal and military donors during the
campaign season.
The campaign runs from September 1st to December 15th, 2006.

Good News From Ariane 5 Launch
AMSAT News Service Bulletin 295.06
From AMSAT HQ SILVER SPRING, MD.
October 22, 2006
To All RADIO AMATEURS
BID: $ANS-295.06
The fourth Ariane 5 launch Of 2006 performed flawlessly. On 13 October
2006, an Ariane 5 ECA launcher lifted off from Europe's Spaceport in
French Guiana on its mission to place two satellites into geostationary
transfer orbits and deploy a demonstration antenna. The satellites were
accurately injected into the correct transfer orbits about 30 minutes
later.
The payload satellites were DIRECTV 9S, which will supply television
broadcast services to the contiguous United States of America, Alaska
and Hawaii, and Optus D1, which will provide fixed communications and
satellite broadcast services over Australia and New Zealand.
The mission also carried an additional passenger, mounted on the Ariane
Structure for Auxiliary Payloads (ASAP) platform at the base of the
payload stack. The Japanese Space Agency's LDREX-2, a 1/25th scale
version of an antenna that will be used on the ETS-8 engineering test
satellite, was flown to validate the deployment process of the
lightweight reflector.

NASA Offers Challenge to K-12 Students
AMSAT News Service Bulletin 295.07
From AMSAT HQ SILVER SPRING, MD.
October 22, 2006
To All RADIO AMATEURS
BID: $ANS-295.07
The International Space Station is growing, and NASA's Node 2
is the next U.S. pressurized module scheduled for installation
on the orbiting laboratory. The node will provide more room for
station crews to live and work, but it needs a name.
Students in kindergarten through grade 12 attending U.S. schools
and children of American personnel overseas are being asked to
help NASA name the module and become part of the history of the
station. The module is at NASA's Kennedy Space Center, Fla., and
is targeted for launch in late 2007. The node will be a connecting
port and passageway to additional international science labs and
space supply vehicles. It also will be a work platform for the
station's robotic arm.
Name the International Space Station Node 2 Challenge requires
students to work together as a class or school to create their
own Node 2 model. Students will name their node, write a brief
description explaining the choice and take digital pictures to
send to NASA.
The submitted image of the model will not be judged, but it will
be the ticket to enter the name challenge. Submissions will be
reviewed by a panel of NASA scientists, engineers and educators.
The deadline to submit model images and names is Dec. 1. The winning
entry will be announced in early 2007. To register a school or
class, teachers or administrators should send an email to:
NASA-ESC(a)nasa.gov.
For information about Node 2, visit:

The order of operation is thus: (allow for Doppler as necessary)
1) Transmit on 145.850 MHz with a tone of 74.4 Hz to arm the 10 minute
timer
on board the spacecraft.
2) Now transmit on 145.850 MHz (FM Voice) using 67.0 Hz to PT the
repeater
on and off within the 10 Minute window.
3) Sending the 74.4 tone again within the 10 minute window will reset
the 10
minute timer.

During the period 15 June to 17 July 2006 nothing has been heard from
the

PCSAT-1 Recovery
AMSAT News Service Bulletin 274.02
From AMSAT HQ SILVER SPRING, MD.
October 1, 2006
To All RADIO AMATEURS
BID: $ANS-274.02
PCSAT-1 has been recovered as it entered better sun angles.
PCSAT-1 should remain NORMAL OPS for the next few weeks until it
experiences an overload and resets. Then it will be lost until
December. All users are asked to please adhere to these fundamental
principles:
1) No connections to or through PCSAT-1
2) UI digipeating and APRS packets only about a 1 minute rate
3) Watch pcsat.aprs.org for live activity
4) Use the path of VIA PCSAT-1 or VIA ARISS
5) Minimize all packets after dark!
Enjoy PCSAT-1 and APRS! Make contacts, QSO, enjoy!
Just remember that ACKS are pretty useless and only add QRM to the
channel. So do not expect ACKS via the satellite. If you see your
outgoing packet digipeated by PCSAT-1 a few times then you should ASSUME
that the other person got it and delete it yourself. By the same token,
if someone sends you a message, then ANSWER him in kind, so that he
knows you got it.

Bob Bruinga, WB4APR, with the US Naval Academy Satellite Lab provided
the following update on PCSAT-1 special operations.
We now welcome routine trackers and unattended beacons so that we can
build up statistics on channel loading and the channel capacity of
PCSAT-1 and it's follow-on spacecraft. We do want everyone to include
basic info in their packet though. Please include PWR,Antenna Gain,
and RATE. Such as "5W,3dbi,5min" so that the statistics will show us
what works...
PCSAT-1 works like any APRS digipeater so the only thing you have to do,
to work the satellite is to change your APRS (or packet station) channel
to 145.825 instead of its normal frequency. When you get to work, QSY
to 145.825 during the day, and when you get home. Its nice to look at
your mobile radio and see who else you captured after work or overnight.
For unattended, set your beacon rate to once ever 5 minutes. If
attended and monitoring the channel, you can use 2 minutes. You can see
if you got in on http://pcsat.aprs.org . Watching the capacity of
PCSAT-1 to carry these data will be usefull for gauging the success of
our next satellite, ParkinsonSAT. See
http://www.ew.usna.edu/~bruninga/buoy.html
PCSAT-1 responds to most common digipeating callsigns (below) so that no
one should have to change anything when going between terrestrial or ISS
operation to PCSAT-1, other than their frequency.
- PCSAT-1
- RELAY
- WIDE
- WIDEn-N
- ARISS
- TRACEn-N
We saw 22 people yesterday on the East Coast and the web page above, is
showing about 70 in the last 2 days. PCSAT-1 should be able to handle
100 or so per footprint PER PASS! So lets get the number of users up
for the next 2 weeks of useful PCSAT-1 life.
See web page PCSAT.APRS.ORG or Google for PCSAT.

Amateur Radio and Amsat were represented at the 6th annual "NBC4
Connected Expo" in downtown Washington DC on September 16 and 17. This
event is sponsored by local television station WRC channel 4 in
Washington and hosted by their on-air technology reporter I.J. Hudson,
K9ICF.
25,000 people attended the event over the two days that it was open. The
ham radio exhibit was located just around the corner from a robotics
demonstration that drew a large number of technically inclined young
people.
The general public really has little idea what ham radio is all about
and often confuses hams with CB operators or thinks of hams as old men
who tap out messages in morse code on vacuum tube radios. Many believe
that ham radio is no longer useful or relevant in the age of cellular
telephones and the internet. Comments that were heard during the weekend
included "Look at the fancy cell phone!", "My father was a ham when I
was young" and "I didn't know you still did that". Many visitors were
surprised to learn that ham radio is still alive and well and fully up
to date with modern technology. A few lapsed hams also thought about
getting back into amateur radio after stopping at the exhibit.
The fact that hams build satellites and talk to astronauts in space was
a major part of the exhibit. These are two things that citizens band
operators and cellular telephone users don't do. A recent ARISS contact
between astronauts and school children played almost continously during
the expo to draw people into the exhibit.
The exhibit also stressed the technical opportunities that are available
in ham radio, that hams can design, build and modify their own
transmitters and other equipment and that amateur radio provides
practical electronics experience and is a great way to get a head start
in a science or engineering career. Displays also showed off the public
service abilities of hams and stressed that ham radio still works after
all other communication systems have failed.
Visitors who were interested in learning more about amateur radio were
directed to one of the many local radio clubs in the Washington area
that offer licensing classes and exam sessions. Although the outcome of
the exhibit cannot be accurately measured, we do know that last year's
exhibit did produce one new ham that we know of, and possibly more that
we don't know about.

OSCAR-11 REPORT
28 September 2006
NOTHING HEARD FROM OSCAR-11 DURING SEPTEMBER ... REPORTS REQUESTED!
Please post reports to AMSAT-BB or e-mail to xxxxx(a)amsat.org (replace
xxxxx by g3cwv).
During the period 14 August 2006 to 28 September, the satellite was
heard from 16 to 26 August. The beacon was expected to switch ON ten
days or 20 later, ie. around 05 or 15 September. However, it has not
been heard since 26 August.
During the last ON period, the real time clock showed various errors.
The date on 16 August was 51 July. By 26 August it had incremented to 60
July. The hours were also showing an erratic behaviour. Over short
periods of time, ie. during a pass, the minutes and seconds appeared to
be incrementing correctly
I am indebted to Jeff KB2M, Peter ZL3TC and Dave G1OCN, for their
reports and for monitoring the satellite, especially during the last two
weeks while I have been away on holiday. Many thanks.
The status of the satellite, when last heard, was that all the analogue
telemetry channels, 0 to 59 are zero, ie they have failed. The status
channels 60 to 67 were still working. The spacecraft computer and active
attitude control system have switched OFF, ie. the satellite' attitude
is controlled only by the passive gravity boom gradient, and the
satellite is free to spin at any speed. When telemetry was last received
it showed that one of the solar arrays had failed, and there was a large
unexplained current drain on the main 14 volt bus. After 22 years in
orbit the battery has undergone around 100,000 partial charge/discharge
cycles, and observations suggest that it cannot power the satellite
during eclipses, or sometimes during periods of poor solar attitude.
The watchdog timer now operates on a 20 day cycle. During the three
months before May (when the eclipses started), the ON/OFF times were
very consistent, and the average of many observations show this to be
20.7 days, ie. 10.3 days ON followed by 10.4 days OFF. However, poor
solar attitude may result may result in a low 14 volt line supply, which
may cause the beacon to switch OFF prematurely, and reset the watchdog
timer cycle. When this occurs, the beacon is OFF for 20.7 days.
The Beacon frequencies are -
VHF 145.826 MHz. AFSK FM ASCII Telemetry
UHF 435.025 MHz. OFF
S-band 2401.5 MHz. OFF
Listeners to OSCAR-11 may be interested in visiting my website. If you
need to know what OSCAR-11 should sound like, there is a short audio
clip for you to hear. The website contains an archive of news &
telemetry data. It also contains details about using a soundcard or
hardware demodulators for data capture. There is software for capturing
data, and decoding ASCII telemetry. The URL is
