July 29, 2007 To All RADIO AMATEURS BID: $ANS-210.01 NASA and ESA Prepare Columbus for Flight A press release from the European Space Agency reports that NASA plans to resume testing and integration work on the ESA Columbus Space Laboratory to prepare it for connection with the International Space Station. Columbus was flown to Florida back in May, 2006, to get in line for its launch to the station. Earlier this year, it was removed from temporary storage, and engineers equipped it with experiment racks and orbital hardware. After a break over the summer, workers will continue preparing it for launch. If all goes well, it will blast into space atop the space shuttle Atlantis as early as December 6th, 2007 on the STS-122 Shuttle Flight. Also aboard Columbus will be amateur radio equipment to support a linear transponder with an L-band uplink and S-band downlink. July 29, 2007 To All RADIO AMATEURS BID: $ANS-210.03 AO-51 Features SSB Uplink to FM Downlink Experiment On July 24 AO-51 controllers enabled the satellite's SQRX receiver to allow for operation utilizing a 145.880 MHz SSB uplink with an FM downlink on 435.300 MHz. This experiment also caused changes in the way that telemetry is handled. Gould, WA4SXM, AO-51 Command Station described the config- uration, "I turned off Transmitter A last night when I switched modes as the schedule did not include the telemetry downlink. If I use the SQRX receiver, then I need to decrease the transmitter power for the batteries to make it through eclipse." In the meantime AO-51 was collecting telemetry, but not transmitting telemetry. Alan, WA4SCA was active on the new mode and wrote, "It is very obvious who has computer control of the radio. Intel- ligibility is as with any of the passband birds, except on AO-51 you fall completely out of the passband quickly. In this mode the RX is relatively sensitive, but I did need a beam to get a good uplink, though my output was only 1-2 watts." In the period between July 27-July 31, controllers returned AO-51 into its V/U FM Repeater mode with the uplink on 145.920 MHz and downlink on 435.300 MHz. 9k6 telemetry transmission was re-enabled on 435.150 MHz. July 29, 2007 To All RADIO AMATEURS BID: $ANS-210.05 Amateur Radio on the International Space Station (ARISS) Status Report July 23, 2007 1. Successful ARISS Contact with Hospitalized Children On Tuesday, July 17, long term hospitalized children at the Arnold Palmer Hospital for Children in Orlando, Florida, spoke with astronaut Clay Anderson, KD5PLA, aboard the ISS, via the telebridge station W6SRJ in California. Anderson answered the children’s 20 questions which had been prepared for the Amateur Radio on the International Space Station (ARISS) event, and with extra time available, he answered an additional 13 posed to him by the 10 patients. An ARISS team member gave a presentation to the children covering amateur radio and the ARISS program. The audio was fed into the EchoLink AMSAT (101 377) and JK1ZRW (277 208) servers, and into the IRLP Discovery Reflector 9010. Twenty connections were made to EchoLink, of which 7 were repeaters, from 8 countries, including the Czech Republic and Croatia. Central Florida News, Channel 13, ran a story with video on the event. Upcoming School Contacts The Challenger Learning Center of Lucas County, in Oregon, Ohio has been scheduled for an Amateur Radio on the International Space Station (ARISS) contact on Wednesday, July 25 at 11:38 UTC. The center has a science lab that is used for the summer camp programs, and schools from northwest Ohio and southeast Michigan participate in the programs which reach approximately 3000 students each year. The audio from this event will be fed into the EchoLink AMSAT (101 377) and JK1ZRW (277 208) servers, as well as being fed into the IRLP Discovery Reflector 9010. An Amateur Radio on the International Space Station (ARISS) contact has been planned for the 21st World Scout Jamboree in Chelmsford, England. A Special Event Station, GB100J, will operate at the Jamboree from July 27 to August 8, 2007. Approximately 40,000 scouts from 200 countries are expected to attend this event. The audio will be broadcast on the Jamboree FM Radio Station and will be webcast on the radio station’s website. It will also be fed into the EchoLink AMSAT (101 377) and JK1ZRW (277 208) servers, but it is unlikely that it will be fed into the IRLP Discovery Reflector 9010. The contact will take place on Saturday, August 4 at 21:10 UTC. 3. ARISS International Team Meeting Held An Amateur Radio on the International Space Station (ARISS) International Team teleconference was held on Tuesday, July 17. July 22, 2007 To All RADIO AMATEURS BID: $ANS-203.02 Since March, Patrick, WD9EWK/VA7EWK has been conducting a series of satellite operating demonstrations at the Thunderbird Amateur Radio Club. W7TBC in Glendale, a suburb of Phoenix, Arizona. At the club's June meeting, kits for a WA5VJB "Cheap Yagi" for the FM satellites were distributed consisting of 2 elements on 2m, 5 elements on 70cm, plus the 2m/70cm "duplexer" or band splitter. Other Thunderbird club members were ready to try FM satellite operation via AO-51 with the telescoping whip on their HT. Two Thunderbird club members made their first satellite contacts under Patrick's mentoring. He reported, "Jeff W0NWA worked Bernardo 6I2HWB in southern Baja California (DL44), and Bob K7UNL worked me followed by Jeff, K7WIN in southeastern Arizona." Patrick made a total of 8 contacts on that pass. Other club members were able to hear AO-51 for the first time. Patrick summarized, "The weather was still 105F/41C outside with a bit of humidity. We had a great time, and for a couple of the club members they now have satellite contacts for their logs. July 22, 2007 To All RADIO AMATEURS BID: $ANS-203.04 I have now updated the telemetry archive on my website to include all the telemetry received in 2007. The news archive has also been updated. The URL is www.users.zetnet.co.uk/clivew During the period 15 June to 15 July 2007, no signals have been received from the satellite's 145.826 MHz. beacon. I have not received any reception reports. The satellite is currently subject to solar eclipses, which will continue until 20 August. The duration of the eclipses is now decreasing and will reach a time of 10 minutes, around 10 August. At that level the satellite may be able to sustain continuous operation, however it is not possible to predict when the satellite will switch ON. If there was failed attempt to switch ON just before 10 August, then it could be the end of August before the satellite resumed continuous transmissions. The battery can no longer power the satellite during the eclipse season. When the battery voltage decreases to a preset level, the watchdog timer resets, and the beacon is turned off for approximately 21 days. When the satellite restarts, eclipses could cause the beacon to switch OFF, after a short time, probably less than one orbit. This short transmission could occur any where over the world, and could be repeated at 20.7 day intervals. Owing to the lack of accurate timings, it is impossible to predict when and where the satellite will be heard during these short transmission periods. It is just possible that someone tuning around 145.826 MHz. may hear the satellite, by chance. The Beacon frequencies are - VHF 145.826 MHz. AFSK FM ASCII Telemetry UHF 435.025 MHz. Viktor, OE1VKW reported, "On July 10 AO-51 over Vienna with very strong signals!" Alan, WA4SCA reported, "AO-51 came up in VS with a 145.920 uplink at the start of the pass. A couple of minutes before LOS, it switched over to LS, and I got a couple of quick test calls in. It Sounded fine." Starting July 13, AO-51 is in the FM repeater mode, with an uplink on 145.920 MHz and downlink on 435.300 MHz. 9K6 telemetry is on the 435.150 MHz downlink. Next on July 24 look for AO-51 to operate with an SSB uplink via 145.880 MHz and FM downlink via 435.300 MHz. July 15, 2007 To All RADIO AMATEURS BID: $ANS-196.03 NASA has made available a recording from the Cassini spacecraft of Saturn's intense radio emissions called Saturn kilometric radiation. The Cassini spacecraft began detecting these radio emissions in April 2002, when Cassini was 374 million kilometers (234 million miles) from the planet, using the Cassini radio and plasma wave science instrument, which provided the first high resolution observations of these emissions, showing an amazing array of variations in frequency and time. The complex radio spectrum with rising and falling tones, is very similar to Earth's auroral radio emissions. These structures indicate that there are numerous small radio sources moving along magnetic field lines threading the auroral region. July 15, 2007 To All RADIO AMATEURS BID: $ANS-196.04 AMSAT members Allen Katz, K2UYH and Marc Franco, N2UO have designed a VHF, high-efficiency, class-E, RF power amplifier with a DC to RF efficiency of 86.8%. Their innovative design is based on silicon carbide (SiC) metal-semiconductor field effect transistors, or MESFETs. The design was presented in a paper at the IEEE International Microwave Symposium in Hawaii. It is now available on-line: http://www.cree.com/products/wireless_docs.htm titled "Class-E Silicon Carbide VHF Power Amplifier" (June 5, 2007) The final amplifier efficiency was measured at around 86 to 88% with this number holding quite well at almost any drain voltage or output power. July 15, 2007 To All RADIO AMATEURS BID: $ANS-196.05 1. School Contacts Maples Collegiate in Winnipeg, Manitoba, Canada had an ARISS contact on Thursday, July 12. The school would like the ARISS contact to be part of the Win-Cube Project in Manitoba. Win-Cube is an innovative science and engineering project that includes students from 10 high schools in Manitoba who will participate in the design, construction, launch, and communication with a pico-satellite in low earth orbit. ARISS will provide students involved in the Win-Cube project with a real application of classroom learning with experiences like the ISS orbital elements and its relation to the availability of ground to orbit commu- nication. Students with their amateur radio licenses performed an active role in establishing and maintaining communication with the ISS. Arnold Palmer Hospital for Children in Orlando, Florida has been slated for an ARISS contact on Tuesday, July 17 via the telebridge station W6SRJ in California. The hospital plans on involving children, who have been hospitalized long term, with this contact. It will showcase the medical advancements made through space science, available due to NASA and its research. An ARISS team member will give a presentation to the children on Amateur Radio on the International Space Station and an astronaut will also be invited to speak to the children. Lithographs will be distributed and children will design posters in anticipation of the contact. 2. Challenger Learning Center Experiences Successful ARISS Contact On Saturday, July 7, children visiting the Challenger Learning Center of Alaska in Kenai experienced an ARISS contact. Clay Anderson, KD5PLA, answered 12 questions posed to him by the participating students and a few more from the audience. A crowd of approximately 50 people was expected to attend. 3. ARISS TIM An ARISS Technical Interchange Meeting (TIM) was held the week of July 9-13, in Houston. Topics of discussion included ARISS radio systems, SuitSat-2, and education issues. 4. Amateur Radio Newsline Article on ARISS Member Amateur Radio Newsline posted a story about ARISS member Tony Hutchison, VK5ZAI, who was named to the Wireless Institute of Australia (WIA) board position of Australian National Coordinator for ARISS. Upcoming School Contact The Challenger Learning Center of Alaska in Kenai, Alaska has been scheduled for an ARISS contact on Saturday, July 7. The center engages Elementary and Middle school students in space exploration, science, math and technology. Home schooled children will also be invited to participate in the contact and there is a possibility of reaching rural students through a School Access video conference. Workshops are planned prior to the contact to introduce children to the ISS, its mission and the crew's responsibilities. Students will participate in poster and essay competitions related to space exploration. Media will be notified and coverage is expected on both a local and national level. 2. Astronaut Training Status Expedition 17 backup crew members Nicole Stott, KE5GJN, and Tim Kopra, KE5LUT, participated in an ARISS training session on Wednesday, June 27. Using a Kenwood D700, the astronauts answered questions posed to them by the trainers, simulating a school contact aboard the ISS and allowing them to familiarize themselves with the operation of the radio system. 3. July 1, 2007 To All RADIO AMATEURS BID: $ANS-181.04 1. Upcoming School Contact The Challenger Learning Center of Alaska in Kenai, Alaska has been scheduled for an Amateur Radio on the International Space Station (ARISS) contact on Saturday, July 7 at 19:43 UTC. The center engages Elementary and Middle school students in space exploration, science, math and technology. Home schooled children will also be invited to participate in the contact and there is a possibility of reaching rural students through a School Access video conference. Workshops are planned prior to the contact to introduce children to the ISS, its mission and the crew’s workload. Students will participate in poster and essay competitions related to space exploration. Media will be notified and coverage is expected on both a local and national level. 2. Amateur Radio Contact on Youth Day To celebrate Youth Day on Saturday, June 16, students in South Africa spoke with astronaut Bill McArthur, KC5ACR, via amateur radio. Amateur Radio on the International Space Station (ARISS) member Hans van de Groenendaal, ZS6AKV, arranged the contact with a few undergraduates and other students from a high school radio club who had just earned their ham licenses a few days earlier. The headmaster was pleased with the outcome and plans to promote Amateur Radio as a major support subject at the school. 3. ARISS International Meeting Held An Amateur Radio on the International Space Station (ARISS) teleconference was held on Tuesday, June 19. Agenda items discussed included the next ARISS face to face meeting, SuitSat-2 and the Columbus Module antennas. Minutes from the meeting have been posted to the ARISS website.
