After several years of running the AMSAT-UK shop,
Jim G3WGM has handed the reins to Ciaran Morgan M0XTD.
Ciaran obtained his full license in April
2008 and enjoyed organising a very successful ARISS
contact between Budbrooke School in Warwick, England
and Richard Garriott K5KWQ whilst he was onboard the
International Space Station in October 2008.
The AMSAT-UK shop has been an important source of funds
in the past and Ciaran is revamping the current shop to
help it to continue to make a valuable contribution to
the funds into the future. The shop has had a policy of
only stocking items that are difficult to obtain in the
UK and, initially, that policy will remain whilst Ciaran
gets familiar with the stock and identifies other
possible options.
Suggestions are always welcome and a new email address
(amsat-uk-shop(a)amsat.org) has been setup. Please send
the suggestions in and keep checking the web site for updates.
Due to the level of sales of software, and compatibility
issues with the more recent Microsoft Operating Systems,
it has been decided to stop selling InstantTrack and
QuickTrack. WiSP and SatPC32 licenses will continue to
be issued from the shop Also, there are currently no books
for sale - we are looking at this but suggestions are
always welcome.
On the hardware front, we have restocked with the ever
popular LVB motherboards and we also have a limited number
of complete kits for the LVB Tracker unit. Half of the new
kits also include the AMSAT-NA enclosure with compatible
display unit! We are also investigating restocking the
2.4GHz signal sources from G0MRF and the G7HIA 2.4GHz
patch kits - please keep a watch on the website for
more details.
The AMSAT UK website can be accessed via http://www.uk.amsat.org/
- the shop is accessed via a link on the left
hand side of the web page.

FRANK BAUER, KA3HDO, RECEIVES ARRL PRESIDENT'S AWARD
On Saturday, May 16 during the forum featuring Richard Garriott, W5KWQ, at
the Dayton Hamvention, ARRL President Joel Harrison, W5ZN, presented former
Amateur Radio on the International Space Station (ARISS)
<http://www.rac.ca/ariss/oindex.htm> International Chairman Frank Bauer,
KA3HDO, with the ARRL President's Award. Bauer, who stepped down from ARISS
<http://www.arrl.org/news/stories/2009/03/25/10724/> and Radio Amateur
Satellite Corporation's (AMSAT) <http://www.amsat.org/> duties this past
March, served as ARISS Program Leader and ARISS International Working Group
Chair. Since 1991, he served as AMSAT Vice President for Human Spaceflight
Programs.
The ARRL Board of Directors voted to create the President's Award in 2003.
The President's Award is to go to an ARRL member or members who "have shown
long-term dedication to the goals and objectives of ARRL and Amateur Radio,"
and who have gone the extra mile to support individual League programs and
goals. Nominations for the award come from directors and are approved by the
ARRL President and the Executive Committee.
Under Bauer's leadership, Amateur Radio activities have been on human
spaceflight vehicles, including NASA-sponsored ham radio activities on the
shuttle, Space Station Mir and the ISS. Starting in 1983, Bauer led the
Goddard Amateur Radio Club team that provided around-the clock space shuttle
retransmissions from the WA3NAN club station. These retransmissions provided
the international ham radio community up-to-the-minute information during
the flight of Owen Garriott, W5LFL, on STS-9
<http://www.nasa.gov/mission_pages/shuttle/shuttlemissions/archives/sts-9.ht
ml> and subsequent SAREX flights. In the days prior to the Internet, these
real-time bulletins and frequent orbital element updates could only be
obtained through Amateur Radio.
"For well over a decade, I have been fortunate to be part of a group that
has been leading international teams together to focus on Amateur Radio on
the ISS," Bauer told the ARRL. "As AMSAT Vice President for Human
Spaceflight since 1991, I have really worked to get this international team
to work as one, focusing on Amateur Radio. It is very critical to get all
the space agency partners to have a vested interest in making sure we do
Amateur Radio right on the ISS. We need to keep the partnership we have with
our international team in good stead."

PharmaSat is a 10 x 10 x 30 cm. spacecraft that houses an advanced
biological laboratory as its payload. This laboratory will measure the
influence of microgravity upon yeast resistance to an antifungal agent.
The PharmaSat mission website at http://www.pharmasat.org
The primary mission of CP6 is to implement an attitude control system
using only magnetic torquers embedded within the side panels. Attitude
determination is performed using two-axis magnetometers on each side
panel as well as observation imagers on the payload face.
Once the primary objectives have been met, a command will be sent to
deploy the secondary payload that consists of a series of spring steel
tapes. The data will be used to guide the future design of an electro-
dynamic tether. More info at: http://polysat.calpoly.edu/CP6.php
CalPoly CPX Data Capture and Decoder:
http://moredbs.atl.calpoly.edu/downloads/cpxdd
A description of the CalPoly telemetry database is at:
http://moredbs.atl.calpoly.edu/
At press time the only information available regarding the mission of
HawkSat-1 comes from their web page stating, "HawkSat-I will be the
first satellite designed, integrated, tested and flown entirely from
the Eastern Shore. In addition to accomplishing our own scientific
and engineering objectives HawkSat-I is also providing a platform for
experimental research funded by a major aerospace firm." See:
http://www.hawkspace.org/projects.html for additional information.
The architecture of HawkSat-1 is based around a Pumpkin Incorporated
CubeSat kit, and carries a technology demonstration payload, primarily
as a proof-of-concept mission, testing command, data and power subsys-
tems, as well as solar panels and communications.
The AeroCube-3 is a non-Amateur Radio CubeSat carrying technology
development experiments. The primary systems being demonstrated are
a two-axis solar tracker, and an Earth tracker, which could be used
in the guidance systems of future satellites. It also carries a 2 foot
diameter balloon which will be used for tracking tests, and to increase
drag, increasing the satellite's orbital decay, after its mission has
been completed.
The primary payload, TacSat-3 is a 12-month mission is to demonstrate
capability to conduct imaging that is responsive to the needs of the
U.S. military. It contains a unique bus architecture which enables
rapid integration and modular packaging of both bus and payload com-
ponents. This will allow future Operationally Responsive Space (ORS)
missions enabling a seven-day call-up requirement for specialized
mil-sats.
Objects associated with this launch have been added to the AMSAT KEPS.
They are called Object A, Object B, Object C, Object D, and Object E.

ARISS and AMSAT at Space Day in Washington DC
On Saturday, May 2 ARISS and AMSAT operated from the Smithsonian's
National Air and Space Museum during Family Day and Space Day events.
The contact, telebridged through W6SRJ in Santa Rosa, went like clock-
work. Ten students and boy scouts at the National Air and Space Museum
asked 19 questions to astronaut Michael Barratt, KD5MIJ on board ISS
during the 9 minute contact opportunity. Audio from the contact was
available via the AMSAT conference on EchoLink and via the 9010
Discovery reflector on IRLP.
Also on-hand at the National Air and Space Museum for the contact was
Ricky Arnold II, KE5DAU. Ricky answered questions from the audience
prior to the contact, sent his greetings to Michael Barratt at the
beginning of the contact and stayed with the audience after the contact
to answer questions one-on-one and to allow time for individual photos.
The AMSAT/ARISS Booth was well attended with lots of youth and adults
stopping by. We had lot of material to handout from AMSAT, ARRL and
NASA. And we gave out the last of the 2009 Space Station Calendars!
Frank Bauer, KA3HDO, wrote from the event, "I want to thank all who
helped at the booth: Perry Klein, Dave Taylor, Bob Davis, Dick Daniels,
Janet Bauer, Bob Bruninga, Don Sylvain, and Bob McCown. While I do not
have the final statistics, there were probably about 20,000 people that
filtered through the museum during the day. A hearty tip of the hat to
the W6SRJ folks for making the contact look so easy. And a big thanks
to Wayne who was our contact moderator."

Annual General Meeting at the Gippsland Campus of Monash University,
Churchill on 2nd May 2009.
The Chris Jones Award honours the memory of a man who was dedicated
to the advancement of amateur radio and whose unfailing commitment and
vision led to a new Wireless Institute of Australia and whose unfailing
courtesy and genuine friendliness is fondly remembered by all who knew
him.
Tony's significant contribution to amateur radio was due to his ARISS
activities which featured eight schools in the region took part in
ARISS contacts (3 from New Zealand and 5 from Australia).
Tony said, "Amateur Radio on International Space Station is a positive
way of introducing our hobby of amateur radio to students, and others
throughout the world by demonstrating how it's used to communicate with
the crews on the International Space Station."
Tony's concluding remarks, "I would like to thank everyone for their
congratulations on winning the prestigious WIA Chris Jones Award. I
would also like to thank the ARISS team, especially Shane VK4KHZ, who
backs me up in VK, and all other Amateurs that have assisted by working
with schools to make these ARISS educational linkups possible, also a
big thanks to my wife Jill, although not licensed, assists me with my
ARISS commitments. Without everyones continual support this wouldn't
have happened."
