To switch the transmitter on, you need to send a CTCSS tone of 74.4 Hz.
The order of operation is thus: (allow for Doppler as necessary):
1) Transmit on 145.850 MHz with a tone of 74.4 Hz to arm the 10 minute
timer
on board the spacecraft.
2) Now transmit on 145.850 MHz (FM Voice) using 67.0 Hz to PT the
repeater on
and off within the 10 Minute window.
3) Sending the 74.4 tone again within the 10 minute window will reset
the 10
minute timer.

AMSAT-DL asks and receives assistance to maintain the ZEL for another year
AMSAT News Service Bulletin 329.01
From AMSAT HQ SILVER SPRING, MD.
November 25, 2007
To All RADIO AMATEURS
BID: $ANS-329.01
Earlier this year the Directors of AMSAT-DL were informed by the University
of Marburg in Germany that it had been decided that funding for the ZEL by
the University would cease at the end of 2007. The Directors approached
AMSAT-NA and AMSAT-UK for financial assistance in keeping the ZEL open for
another year. The sum of 25,000 Euros was requested.
At recent meetings of the AMSAT-NA Board and of the AMSAT-UK Committee, it
was agreed that both would contribute to the donation. Given the relative
sizes of the two donating AMSAT groups it was agreed that AMSAT-NA would
donate 75% of the money required, and that AMSAT-UK would donate 25%.
The ZEL (Zentrales Entwicklungslabor fur electronic, roughly translated as
the Central Development Laboratory for Electronics) has been the facility
which, over the last 40 years, has been at the centre of much amateur
satellite development activity by members of the University, members of
AMSAT-DL, as well as other members of AMSAT from outside Germany. The most
famous satellite to be produced there was OSCAR-13 which gave the Amateur
Radio Community many years of excellent service.
Currently under construction is Phase 3E, a satellite similar in size and
shape to OSCAR-13, but with many advanced features. It will carry a 70 cms
to 2 metre band transponder, as well as transponders on other bands.
Importantly it will carry its own rocket motor which will boost its orbit
into a highly elliptical one, which will give world wide coverage, allowing
ordinary radio amateur great DX possibilities through the transponders.
Radio Amateurs have not had such a satellite since the demise of AO-40 in
March 2004.
The P3E satellite is still under construction in the ZEL, and its completion
is anticipated for sometime in 2008. It is note worthy that some of the
personnel employed by the University to work in the ZEL have undertaken to
continue working on P3E as volunteers.

1. ARISS School Contacts Status
Due to the very demanding schedules of the crew onboard the ISS, no Amateur
Radio on the International Space Station (ARISS) contacts have been planned at
this time. The ARISS team expects contacts to resume once STS-122 launches in
December.
2. Columbus Module Installed in Atlantis Payload Bay
Amateur Radio on the International Space Station (ARISS) antennas were
installed on the nadir of the Columbus Module in October. The Columbus Module
has been moved to the Atlantis payload bay in preparation for a December 6
launch. An article has been posted on the ARISS-Europe Web site. See:
http://www.ariss-eu.org/2007_11_18.htm
3. Amateur Radio Day Article
Midlakes Intermediate School participated in Amateur Radio Day on November 2
in celebration of Pam Melroy’s STS-120 mission. The local paper ran an
article on the event. See: http://www.mpnnow.com/news/x9494626
4. Video Posted of Pontes Radio Contact
The first Brazilian astronaut Marcos Pontes, PY0AEB, flew on the ISS in April,
2006. He participated in an Amateur Radio on the International Space Station
(ARISS) contact and made a few radio contacts with the public. Fabiano Moser,
PY5RX, was one of those who spoke with Pontes. Upon returning to Earth, Pontes
presented Fabiano with a gift during a public speech in Bauru, Brazil
commemorating his ISS contact. A video of Pontes during the radio contact with
Fabiano was recorded by US astronaut Bill McArthur on the ISS. The video may
be found on this website: http://iss.ontwikkel.nl
5. ARISS Mentioned in QST
The American Radio Relay League (ARRL) covered Amateur Radio on the
International Space Station (ARISS) in its December issue of QST.
Under "Media Hits" (page 12) is a paragraph about the Macomb Daily and the

To switch the transmitter on, you need to send a CTCSS tone of 74.4 Hz.
The order of operation is thus: (allow for Doppler as necessary):
1) Transmit on 145.850 MHz with a tone of 74.4 Hz to arm the 10 minute
timer
on board the spacecraft.
2) Now transmit on 145.850 MHz (FM Voice) using 67.0 Hz to PT the
repeater on
and off within the 10 Minute window.
3) Sending the 74.4 tone again within the 10 minute window will reset
the 10
minute timer.

To All RADIO AMATEURS
BID: $ANS-315.01
Here is a mission for all you Satellite enthusiasts to follow and give
reports to. Amateurs at the University of Tennessee Amateur Radio Club
are launching a balloon with a beacon in the 10 MHz Amateur Band that
may travel across the Atlantic.
The latest Icarus X mission designated UX-19, will hopefully launch
about the time we go to air. The payload will include a GPS unit and
computerized unit that will regulate the balloon's altitude and send
telemetry on 10.123 MHz in CW and RTTY formats. In addition to the 30m
beacon there will also be an APRS beacon AA4UT-11 on 144.390 MHz FM.
The dates are TBA (soon).
The flight has been dubbed 'The Spirit Of Knoxville' after Lindbergh's
first trans-Atlantic flight. The 10 MHz transmitter will run 3 watts
output into a half wave dipole hung below the balloon. The goal of its
5 day mission is to be the first Amateur Radio equipped helium balloon
to cross the Atlantic.

Approximately 200 attended
IIS Deambrosis-Natta and another 350 students, teachers and
correspondents were present at the University of L’Aquila. STS-120
Commander Pam Melroy first greeted the students and then Paolo Nespoli,
IZ0JPA, answered thirteen questions posed to him over two consecutive
passes. Newspapers, television stations and radio stations reported on
the event. The audio from this event was fed into the EchoLink AMSAT
(101 377) and JK1ZRW (277 208) servers, and into the Internet Radio
Linking Project (IRLP) Discovery Reflector 9010. A summary of the
contact was posted to the ARISS-Europe Web site with audio and a
photograph. See: http://www.ariss-eu.org/2007_10_29.htm
The European Space Agency (ESA) ran an article on the ARISS contact:
http://www.esa.int/SPECIALS/Esperia/SEMJC4FWB8F_0.html
2. Second Successful School Contact with Italian Schools
On Wednesday, October 31, students attending Liceo Scientifico G.Galilei
in Civitavecchia, Roma and others at ITI-LST Mottura in Caltanisetta,
Italy participated in an Amateur Radio on the International Space
Station (ARISS) contact. ESA astronaut Paolo Nespoli, IZ0JPA answered 10
questions from as many students during the question and answer session.
Approximately 200 and 300 students were in attendance from Civitavecchia
and Caltanisetta, respectively. Audio from this event was fed into the
EchoLink AMSAT (101 377) and JK1ZRW (277 208) servers and received 14
connections including 3 repeaters, from 8 countries. The audio was also
fed into the Internet Radio Linking Project (IRLP) Discovery Reflector
9010. Television stations, radio stations and newspapers covered the
event. For more information, see the ARISS-Europe Web site:
http://www.ariss-eu.org/2007_11_02.htm
The European Space Agency (ESA) ran a story on the Nespoli contact. See:

3. Malaysian School Contacts Update
Malaysian space visitor Dr. Sheikh Muszaphar Shukor, 9W2MUS,
participated in the Amateur Radio on the International Space Station
(ARISS) program while on board the ISS. Five different groups of
Malaysian school children gathered at the National Planetarium in Kuala
Lumpur and spoke with Shukor, directly via 9M2RPN. All five of the
successful contacts took place over the week of October 14.
Approximately 90 people attended each of the 1st and 3rd- 5th sessions;
the second contact had an audience of 50 students, teachers and others.
The National Planetarium provided the youth with shows related to space
exploration during their visits and each student was issued a QSL
(postcard) to commemorate the event. NASA astronaut Robert “Hoot” Gibson
was present during the final session and gave talks about space. Three
television stations, one radio station and 5 newspapers covered these
events.
4. Status of ARISS School Contacts Schedule
Due to the very demanding schedules of the crew onboard the ISS, no
Amateur Radio on the International Space Station (ARISS) contacts have
been planned at this time. The ARISS team expects contacts to resume
once STS-122 launches in December. For a more complete status of the
ARISS program, go to:
http://www.amsat.org/amsat/archive/sarex/10day/msg01446.html
5. AMSAT Space Symposium Presentation

Bob McGwier, N4HY, Vice President of Engineering for AMSAT, Software
Expert, heavy contributor to Software Defined Radios, and all around
entertaining speaker will be the guest speaker at the 10 Nov 2007 North
Texas Microwave Society Meeting. This meeting will be held at the
University of North Texas Student Union building in Denton, TX. People
start gathering at 12:00 PM and the meeting starts at 1:00 PM.
With Bob's announcement of AMSAT's Phase 4 Lite project at the AMSAT
Space Symposium last weekend, this should be a very interesting meeting.
Bob is "up to speed" on all of AMSAT's projects and is deeply involved
with Flex Radio and others in Software Defined Radios.
While this is the same day as the NCTECH Hamfest in Azle, TX, you can attend
both if you play your cards right. Plan to join us for an informative meeting
and help pass the word.

PCSAT-1 responded to all RESTORE commands on the 1320Z pass on 02 November
2007.
On the next pass (now in full sun), she remembered it all and
was fully operational (though the transmitters were again cross
connected meaning that relay had dropped out in the dark over
Europe. But we set the relay again and she should be fine.
PLEASE limit all operations to DAYLIGHT hours only, and PCSAT-1
should be good for the next few weeks. Also, on the same
145.825, you should also hear ANDE and ARISS. That's 18 passes
a day!
RULE: If you see packets from both PCSAT-1 and PCSAT-11 on the
same frequency, then STOP digipeating. The transmitters are
cross connected and consuming TWICE the battery power (which we
don't have). You can confirm what is happening prior to your
pass by checking the packets on http://pcsat.aprs.org If you
see packets from both the -1 and -11 callsign via the same
satgates, then the transmitters are cross connected and should
not be used. Also avoid any use after dark.
PCSAT-11 downlink is on 144.39 over North America so all mobiles
on the normal APRS channel can be alerted when it is in view.

Many thanks to all stations who managed to have a QSO with the sputnik special
event Satellite station GB5OSO, well done! QSL cards have yet to come from the
printers so it may be a while before they arrive.
The event went very well with 300+ QSO's in 33 DXCC countries on AO-7, AO-27,
SO-51, AO-51 and VO-52, in all 170+ stations were logged many of whom were
worked on more than one satellite and special thanks to the two stations who
were worked on all 5 birds namely G1OCN and ON5NY. Also many thanks to JA0CAW
and JH1EKH who were able to organise a connection via EchoLink to SO-50 and
AO-51 whilst they were over Japan. There was also some activity on HF.

SatPC32 ver 12.7 released
AMSAT News Service Bulletin 308.04
From AMSAT HQ SILVER SPRING, MD.
November 4, 2007
To All RADIO AMATEURS
BID: $ANS-308.04
SatPC32 version 12.7 has been released by Erich Eichmann, DK1TB.
What's new in verions 12.7:
1. The program now comes with additional sets of 2D and 3D
physical world maps. Via mouse click the user can switch
between political and physical maps.
2. The political 2D world maps have been updated. Now they show
the border lines of the successor states of the former
Soviet Union and the former Yugoslavia.
3. The programs (SatPC32, SatPC32ISS and Wisat32) now support
rotor steering with the Italian rotor system ProSistel.
4. The "Uplink Calibration" feature has been expanded. With
previous versions this function could only be used with
"normal" SSB satellites (SSB on Uplink and Downlink). Now
it also works with mixed-mode satellites (Uplink: SSB,
Downlink:FM). Sometimes AO-51 is using this mode.
The "Uplink Calibration" function allows users to automatically
calibrate the Uplink frequency for best audio pitch of their
downlink signal and to save the change. With future program
starts the user will then immediately hear his own downlink
when he switches to that satellite, without the necessity to
tune around and produce QRM.
Important: With SSB/FM satellites the SatPC32 control "V"
must be switched to "V+" before the "Uplink Calibration"
function can be used.
5. The programs (SatPC32, SatPC32ISS,Wisat32) no longer use the
IOPort.SYS driver for port access. This driver doesn't work on
64-bit systems. So, no special version of these programs is
necessary for 64-bit systems.
The driver was used to steer the German rotor interface IF-100.
Since direct steering of this Interface by SatPC32 is no longer
possible the update includes a little server program similar to
the rotor driver files for the other interfaces and controllers
supported by SatPC32. The new IF-100 server program is only
functional with 32-bit systems. The other rotor interfaces and
controllers - except the FodTrack interface and the KCT-Tracker -
are supported with 32-bit and 64-bit systems.
6. Some minor improvements have been made with SatPC32ISS, WinAOS
and WinListen.

1. Giosuè Carducci Contact, a Success
The first Amateur Radio on the International Space Station (ARISS) contact of
Expedition 16 took place on Tuesday, October 23. Seventeen students from
Giosuè Carducci in Santa Marinella, Italy asked one question each of Clay
Anderson, KD5PLA as an audience of approximately 265 students, guests and
reporters gathered for the event. The audio from this contact was fed into
the EchoLink AMSAT (101 377) and JK1ZRW (277 208) servers and received 22
connections, of which 3 were repeater nodes, from 6 countries. The audio was
also fed into the Internet Radio Linking Project (IRLP) Discovery Reflector
9010. Two television stations, two radio stations and all local newspapers
covered the event. A write up with photos and audio may be found on the
ARISS-Europe Web site. See:
http://www.ariss-eu.org/2007_10_24.htm
3. AMSAT-NA Space Symposium
The 2007 Radio Amateur Satellite Corporation (AMSAT) Annual Meeting and Space
Symposium was held Friday – Sunday, October 26 -28 in Pittsburgh,
Pennsylvania. Four presentations were given covering the Amateur Radio on the
International Space Station (ARISS) program. The ARISS contact with the
Arnold Palmer Hospital for Children, the SuitSat-2 project status, human
spaceflight, and the long term impact of the SAREX and ARISS programs were
all presented.
4. Space Jamboree Article and Update
A local newspaper, The Fountain County Neighbor, ran an article on the October
6 Boy Scouts of America Space Jamboree held at Camp Robert Drake in Oakwood,
Illinois. The Scouts participated in a NASA Mission to Mars Expedition through
a Digital Learning Lab and approximately 400 witnessed an Amateur Radio on
the International Space Station (ARISS) contact. Over one hundred scouts
earned their Radio Merit Badges during the event.
