Ray Soifer, W2RS extends the annual cordial invitation to all radio
amateurs worldwide to participate in AMSAT's Straight Key Night (SKN)
on OSCAR 2009.
Participating in SKN on OSCAR 2009 is easy. No rules, no scoring and
no need to send in a log. Just operate CW through any OSCAR between
0000 and 2400 UTC on 1 January 2009, using a straight hand key.
In keeping with the friendly nature of this event, all participants
are encouraged to nominate someone they worked for "Best Fist." Your
nominee need not have the best fist of those you heard, just of those
you worked. Please send your nomination to w2rs(a)amsat.org. A list of
those nominated will appear in ANS and The AMSAT Journal.
CU SKN!

ARISS 25th Commemorative Event to Feature L/V Repeater This Week
AMSAT News Service Bulletin 363.04
From AMSAT HQ SILVER SPRING, MD.
December 28, 2008
To All RADIO AMATEURS
BID: $ANS-363.04
To date, the ISS crew has configured the radio to support cross-band repeater
operations, they have supported some SSTV downlinks and we have had the
opportunity to participate in a special test of 9600 baud packet
radio operations
on the simplex frequency of 145.825 MHz.
Specifically, December 28-January 3, we plan to reconfigure the Crossband
repeater for a special experiment. This will be a test of our L-Band uplink
capability, which, to date, has not been proven out. Plan for an uplink of
1269.65 MHz and and downlink on the standard frequency 145.80 MHz using low
power. Given the substantial cable losses of the L-band system, we
hope some "big
guns" are able to penetrate through, keep up with doppler, and make the
connection.
We will provide more updates in the near future. We would like to remind
everyone that ISS flight requirements related to EVA and vehicle activity may
require the radio to be off for some portion of this schedule. And school
contacts and general QSO opportunities by the crew will also preempt this
schedule for short periods of time. (But remember that if you hear these, you
still qualify for a commemorative certificate).
Frank concluded, "In the meantime, enjoy the ARISS ops on ISS! And
congratulations to Owen Garriott, W5LFL, on the 25th anniversary of
his historic
flight!!"
[ANS thanks Frank, KA3HDO, AMSAT-NA V.P. for Human Spaceflight Programs

1. Upcoming School Contacts
An Amateur Radio on the International Space Station (ARISS) contact has been
scheduled with Technopolis in Mechelen, Belgium on Monday, December 29 at 11:43
UTC via telebridge station WH6PN in Hawaii. The mission of Technopolis is to
bring science and technology to the public. The center has permanent and
temporary exhibits and organizes workshops, school activities and
other outreach
activities. The ARISS contact will be open to all school children 6
-18 years of
age and will be supported through a workshop, lecture or science show.
2. Canadian School Contact Successful
Students from King George Elementary School in Moose Jaw, Saskatchewan, Canada
took part in a question and answer session with Sandra Magnus, KE5FYE. The
Amateur Radio on the International Space Station (ARISS) contact took place on
Monday, December 15. Ten students were able to ask one question each of the
astronaut as an audience of 320 looked on. Ray Boughen, Minister of Education
Provincial Parliament, Dale McBain, City of Moose Jaw Mayor (both former
educators) and Brenda Edwards, Director of Education for Prairie South School
Division attended. Television stations taped the event and interviewed the
children. Radio station CHAB interviewed the school
coordinator. The Moose Jaw
Times Herald printed an article covering the contact. See:
http://www.mjtimes.sk.ca/index.cfm?sid=201052&sc=3
The story includes links to the contact video:
http://www.mjtimes.sk.ca/index.cfm?main=broadcast&bcid=10109
Principal Ward Milligan commented, "It was an awesome 'once in a lifetime
experience' that will become more important in the lives of these students as
they look back upon this event in years to come. Having a personal
contact with
someone in space increased the students' interest in space by three fold.
Sandra Magnus was very enthusiastic and answered the students' questions in a
manner they could relate to. She was very encouraging of the students. It was
an inspirational and moving experience."
3. Italian Students Radio ISS
On Thursday, December 18, students from Scuola Elementare Faleriense "Gianni
Rodari" in Porto Sant'Elpidio, Italy participated in an Amateur Radio on the
International Space Station (ARISS) contact with Mike Fincke, KE5AIT as over
three hundred students, teachers and parents gathered for the event. Twenty-one
students questioned the astronaut and Season's Greetings were exchanged. RAI3
Regional Television and some local media and newspapers covered the event. The
audio was fed into the EchoLink servers. For more information, including photos
and audio, go to: www.ariss-eu.org/2008_12_18.htm
The Corriere News ran an article (in Italian):
http://www.corrierenews.it/index.php/corrierenews3100/content/view/full/220…
ESA mentions the recent Marco Polo, Circolo Didattico San Giuseppe and Gianni
Rodari contacts in this story (also in Italian):
http://www.esa.int/esaCP/SEMXK4TTGOF_Italy_2.html
4. ARISS International Meeting Held
The Amateur Radio on the International Space Station (ARISS) team meeting was
held on Tuesday, December 16. Agenda items included the next face-to-face
meeting, SuitSat-2 development status and the ARISS special event. Minutes have
been posted to the ARISS Web site. See:
http://www.rac.ca/ariss/arisstel2008-12-16.htm
5. Astronaut Training Status
Astronaut Michael Barratt, KD5MIJ, took a refresher course on the Amateur Radio
on the International Space Station (ARISS) equipment and operations on
Wednesday, December 17. Barratt is looking forward to supporting the program
during his time on board the ISS as an Expedition 19 crew member. Expedition 19
is the first half of the planned 6 person crew.
6. ARRL QST Covers ARISS News
The American Radio Relay League (ARRL) printed 4 Amateur Radio on the
International Space Station (ARISS) news items in its January 2009
issue of QST.
Under "Media Hits" (page 12) is a lengthy paragraph about how the
media coverage
for Richard Garriott, W5KWQ, was very prolific.
A story on pages 59-60 is about Andrea Hartlage, KG4IUM, a student at Georgia
Tech who's a ham and was quite interested in ARISS. She was friends with a ham
teacher at a middle school near her middle school; the teacher had applied for
an ARISS contact. The story is called "DXpedition to Planet Mars" and is about
Andrea's involvement in the Mars Desert Research Station (MDRS). It
says at the
end that she wants to be an astronaut.
Two columns under "Happenings" (page 63) are titled "Richard Garriott; W5KWQ
Back on Terra Firma" which is about Richard and ARISS. It carries two pictures
- one of the students in Austin who contacted him during his mission in space
and the other is a photo of Richard.
"Grants Focus on the Future of Amateur Radio" (page 95) covers three
groups that
won ARRL Foundation grants. One grant was given to the Eagle Scouts of Indiana
who took part in an ARISS contact at the Space Jamboree 2008. The
grant received
was used to fund equipment for electronic building projects at the Space
Jamboree which helped scouts complete the electronics merit badge.
The equipment
also served other regional and national scout gatherings to introduce amateur
radio. Another group that received an award was the Ann Arbor Hands-On Museum
which is scheduled for an ARISS contact on December 27. The money received
funded a ham station (and antenna) in the museum lobby.
7. ARRL and AMSAT Articles on ARISS Special Event
The American Radio Relay League (ARRL) ran a Web story about the 25th
anniversary of ham radio in space. It includes the latest news covering the
Amateur Radio on the International Space Station (ARISS) special event. See:
http://www.arrl.org/news/stories/2008/12/18/10509/?nc=1
The ARRL also issued a W1AW bulletin on the same subject and an article was
published in the ARRL Letter. See: http://www.arrl.org/arrlletter/08/1219/

1) Transmit on 145.850 MHz with a tone of 74.4 Hz to arm the 10 minute
timer on board the spacecraft.
2) Now transmit on 145.850 MHz (FM Voice) using 67.0 Hz to PT the re-
peater on and off within the 10 Minute window.
3) Sending the 74.4 tone again within the 10 minute window will reset

AMSAT News Service Bulletin 356.01

December 21, 2008
To All RADIO AMATEURS
BID: $ANS-356.01
Happy Holidays! Best wishes to everyone during this festive
time of the year. As I write this, a major snowstorm is pro-
viding plenty of 'white stuff' in the Midwest and New England,
so I presume this means that we will have a white Christmas
here in Massachusetts. While this is certainly a time of
economic uncertainty, I also know that our members continue
to make a difference for AMSAT.
A number of interesting opportunities and events have developed
over the past two months for AMSAT that I would like to briefly
share with you:
1. ARISS Silver Anniversary. The first amateur radio two-way
communication between the Space Shuttle and amateurs on the
ground took place on December 3, 1983 when Owen Garriott, W5LFL
made his historic flight on STS-9. There are a number of oppor-
tunities for amateurs to help celebrate this event and the ARISS
International Committee, chaired by AMSAT VP-Human Space Flight,
Frank Bauer, KA3HDO have arranged for some special events. Please
check ANS and the AMSAT webpage (www.amsat.org) for the latest
information and join the fun!
2. AO-16 operations. As expected, performance of this spacecraft
is declining as the spacecraft's temperature is dropping due to
longer eclipses resulting in less sunlight and a cooler spacecraft.
This drop in temperature is causing the satellite's hardware timer
to reset until the spacecraft warms up (when there is at least 85%
illumination). If you're interested in making two-way contacts
using AO-16's unique cross mode, cross band voice repeater, with
an uplink on 145.920 FM and downlink on 437.026 MHz reduced carrier
AM, now is the time to try it! The satellite is expected to 'go
silent' shortly when temperatures stay low enough as to not allow
software configuration of the satellite before the hardware timer
resets itself again.
3. President's Club. A fundraising appeal letter was mailed this
week to all AMSAT members. Please consider donating to the AMSAT
President's Club so that we can continue our efforts to maintain
amateur radio in space.
4. Near Term Engineering Task Force. I announced at the AMSAT
Annual Meeting in Atlanta that a group led by Bill Ress, N6GHZ
had been formed to review the 'Rideshare' Proposal developed by
Tom Clark, K3IO as well as evaluate AMSAT's ability to develop a
modularization strategy to adapt RF packages to various structures.
The committee has been diligently meeting every two weeks via tele-
conference to discuss future options for AMSAT and to help structure
AMSAT's thinking on future spacecraft opportunities. While it is
too soon for formal announcements of their findings, it is good to
know that we have a formal group actively focused on engineering
issues.
5. SuitSat-2. Development work continues to place SuitSat-2 in
service sometime in 2009. Several engineering issues have recently
surfaced regarding modulation and transmission schemes and the team
is evaluating several options regarding how best to resolve the issues.
Several individuals have recently joined the engineering team to help
overcome these challenges by developing potential alternative solutions.
6. ITAR. I announced at the AMSAT Annual Meeting in Atlanta that AMSAT
would actively develop a strategy concerning ITAR (International Traffic
in Arms Regulations) and related export regulations. Our goal is to
ensure that AMSAT is in full compliance with ITAR, develop materials to
train our satellite builders on ITAR compliance, and to seek ways
where we may continue to work with other AMSAT organizations on satel-
lite projects. Since the Annual Meeting, Bill Ress, N6GHZ and I have
been working with an attorney who specializes in ITAR. We hope to make
a formal submission to the State Department regarding ITAR in early 2009.
7. AMSAT Lab. AMSAT is actively seeking a new home for our AMSAT Lab.
Unfortunately, due to changes that took place at HISS (Hawk Institute
for Space Sciences) in Pocomoke City, MD over the summer, we are forced
to remove our equipment and clean room from the current facility. We
are in active discussions with several institutions concerning potential
relocation, but no decision has been made. If you are in position to
provide contacts with a not-for-profit institution that might be inter-
ested the hosting the AMSAT Lab, please contact me.
8. AMSAT 40th Anniversary. AMSAT was incorporated in 1969, so this
coming year (2009) is our 40th Anniversary! The 2009 AMSAT Symposium
will take place the weekend of October 9 in the Washington-Baltimore
area. Look for details in the upcoming AMSAT Journal. Please join us
that weekend as we celebrate a significant milestone for AMSAT and
build the foundation for the next 40 years of AMSAT.
As you can see, there are a number of activities that are ongoing within
AMSAT. While we are challenged by the impact of current events, we con-
tinue to move forward in a number of areas.
As always, I appreciate hearing from the AMSAT membership. Should you
have any questions or concerns about AMSAT, please don't hesitate to
contact me. I will make every effort to respond to e-mails that I
receive, but please keep in mind that I travel extensively which may
limit my ability to respond quickly. Please know that I read every e-mail
that I receive from AMSAT members and that I appreciate every person's
willingness and time spent to share their thoughts and suggestions.
Seasons Greetings,

ARISS 25th Anniversary Adds New Modes
AMSAT News Service Bulletin 356.02
>From AMSAT HQ SILVER SPRING, MD.
December 21, 2008

BID: $ANS-356.02
ARISS International Chairman and AMSAT-NA V.P. for Human Spaceflight
Programs Frank Bauer, KA3HDO invites amateur radio operators around
the world to join in the ARISS team's 25th anniversary of amateur
radio operations from space. Increased activity and new exciting
modes of operation from the ARISS amateur radio station aboard the
International Space Station are featured in this celebration operating
period.
To date, the ISS crew has configured the radio to support cross-band
repeater operations, they have supported some SSTV downlinks and we
have had the opporunity to participate in a special test of 9600 baud
packet radio operations on the simplex frequency of 145.825 MHz. This
past week featured 1200 baud packet operations on 145.825 MHz to open
a dual-hop APRS path in case PCSAT-1 became operational.
For the upcoming weeks the following is being planned in the
near-term:
+ December 21-26 - we plan to support the Crossband repeater mode
with a twist. Our intent is to configure the radio for 145.99 MHz
uplink including PL tone of 67.0 and 437.80 MHz down. This will
be performed in low power mode.
+ December 22 - Expedition 18 Commander Mike Fincke and Flight
Engineer Yury Lonchakov plan to perform a spacewalk. As per
standard procedure, the ISS ham radio system will be turned off
for the EVA.
+ December 28-January 3 - we plan to reconfigure the Crossband
repeater for a special experiment. This will be a test of our
L-Band uplink capability, which, to date, has not been proven
out. Plan for an uplink of 1269.65 MHz and and downlink on the
standard frequency 145.80 MHz using low power. Given the subtan-
tial cable losses of the L-band system, we hope some "big guns"
are able to penetrate through, keep up with doppler, and make
the connection.
+ And at times, especially during the weekends, you might see some
SSTV operations if the crew is available.
The ARISS team will provide more updates in the near future. They
would like to remind everyone that ISS flight requirements related
to EVA and vehicle activity may require the radio to be off for some
portion of this schedule. And school contacts and general QSO oppor-
tunities by the crew will also preempt this schedule for short periods
of time. (But remember that if you hear these, you still qualify for
a commemorative certificate).
Details of how to receive your ARISS 25th Anniversary Commemorative
Certificate can be found at http://www.amsat.org.

ARISS US Hardware Manager Lou McFadin, W5DID provided a summary of
expected parameters for those considering trying to make a contact
with the ISS on L-band to VHF crossband repeater experiment planned
for December 28 to January 3.
Lou reported, "The measured sensitivity of the L band receiver on
a D700, as the radio aboard the ISS, is -105dBm for full quieting.
The cable loss from the radio to the antenna is 9.3db. The antenna
gain is zero db. The polarization is LHCP."
Extending the calcuations to cover the entire system path, Lou said,
"The path loss at the horizon on L band is -160dB. That means the
required EIRP for a full quieting contact at the horizon is 65dBm.
The path loss decreases by 15dB at 80 degrees elevation so that means
you can get full quieting with 50dBm in that case. To further elaborate
if you use a 20dB gain antenna (a small dish), it is estimated that
you can complete a QSO with 32 watts at the horizon or 1 watt at 80
degrees elevation."
The planned operating frequencies include:
Uplink: 1269.650 MHz FM
Downlink: 145.800 MHz FM

AMSAT-NA VP Operations, Drew KO4MA reported on behalf of the AO-51
Operations Team, "We are now back to the normal uplink arrangement
of 145.920 and 435.300 for normal repeater use. We changed from the
QRM mitigation experiment of operating via the 145.880 uplink back to
this normal mode to enable low-power repeater QRP operation. The
QRP repeater is now operational on 145.880 and 435.150."
As a result of the QRM investigation Drew said, "I'm convinced not
all of our problems are related to the cordless phones. I heard tonight
whistlers, blowing in the mike, and folks giving extended CQs. We are
working on finding the general location of the cordless phones, but
it takes time. Then we'll work at shutting them down.
The AO-51 Operations Team provided results of their QRM investigation
on and around the 145.920 uplink. There may be some low level modula-
tion on some of the signals in the captured waterfall diagram. It is
believed they may be from some of the same long distance phones that
were plauging AO-27 and SO-50 a few years ago. Observations indicate
the interfering signals are lost about the time the edge of the foot-
print crosses the mid Atlantic states. Refer to this page:

Bob, WB4APR provided an update on PCSAT-1 recovery status from the
U.S. Naval Academy Satellite Laboratory. Bob wrote, "For the first
time in 7 years, we were not able to fully recover PCSAT during this
full sun period despite the efforts of a number of dedicated volun-
teers around the world."
PCSAT-1 is only operation when its solar panels are illuminated by
sunlight. Full sun periods occur when passes are at sunrise and
sunset to earth observers. PCSAT gets sun 24 hours a day then, but
only on the side panels due to the orientation of the satellite.
Ground station controllers were able to recover PCSAT-1 and the weak
solar illumination allowed operation for generally an orbit before
the power budget could not support the load.
Bob summarized, "Anyway, this is not the last you will hear of PCSAT,
but there will probably not be any more several week full sun, full
recovery periods as there have been in the past. I really appreciate
all the efforts of so many operators. So play packet on the ISS and
thanks again for all your efforts!"

To switch the transmitter on, you need to send a CTCSS tone of 74.4
Hz. The order of operation is thus: (allow for Doppler as necessary):
1) Transmit on 145.850 MHz with a tone of 74.4 Hz to arm the 10 minute
timer on board the spacecraft.
2) Now transmit on 145.850 MHz (FM Voice) using 67.0 Hz to PT the re-
peater on and off within the 10 Minute window.
3) Sending the 74.4 tone again within the 10 minute window will reset
the 10 minute timer.

Special ARISS Certificate
AMSAT News Service Bulletin 349.01
From AMSAT HQ SILVER SPRING, MD.
December 14, 2008
To All RADIO AMATEURS
BID: $ANS-349.01
All,
The ARISS team has had a number of queries on several topics. It is
hoped that this e-mail will answer these for you.
1) 25th Anniversary of Ham in Space Special Event Certificate---Many
have asked how to receive the special certificate and what qualifies you
for the certificate.
Qualification: Those that have had 2 way communications with the ISS on
Voice, Packet (APRS), or through the voice repeater. And those that
have heard the ISS from space in any of the ARISS operations modes
(Voice, SSTV, School Contact, Voice Repeater, Digital). Valid dates to
qualify for certificate: November 30 to January 15.
Receiving the Certificate:
A) Please note on your QSL the ARISS mode of operation (e.g. SSTV,
voice, school, etc) and whether the contact with you was 1 way (receive
only) or 2 way.
B) Send your SASE to the normal ARISS QSL volunteer distributor in your
area of the world.
C) On the outside of the QSL envelope, please include the words "25th
Anniversary Certificate"
D) Make sure your envelope is big enough to accept an 8.5 by 11 inch
certificate and includes the proper postage.
E) Go to www.ariss.org if you do not know where to send your QSL and
please use one of the standard international QSL distributors that are
noted on the Web page.
Important note: We will be sending your certificate to the volunteer
distributors in bulk AFTER the event is over. (This saves workload and
money). So do not expect to see it until 1-2 months after the event
closes on January 15.
2) Richard Garriott QSL Card---there are have several queries about the
final results of Richard Garriott's flight and how the QSL cards will be
handled.
QSO Results: Richard made over 500 voice QSOs during his flight,
clearly more than any single ham has made on-orbit during a short
duration mission. And he sent down about 1000 SSTV images during his flight.
QSL Card: Those that had a QSO with Richard can receive an ARISS QSL
card using the normal ARISS process. (See www.ariss.org). Richard
Garriott is also planning a personal card which is in development. Once
it is developed, they will be shipped to the ARISS international QSL
distribution volunteers for distribution. The current plan is that
those that have already sent in for an ARISS QSL card will also get a
Richard Garriott personal card once it is available. If you made a
contact with Richard, have not sent in your QSL, and would like
Richard's personal QSL card, please stand by for QSL distribution
instructions until the QSL card is ready. The distribution of this
special QSL will parallel how we are distributing the 25th Anniversary
Certificate.
3) SSTV Operations Web Site---The ARISS team appreciated the special
web page support from UC Berkeley. They allowed us to use their server
to support SSTV operations during the Richard Garriott's flight. This
was a temporary solution. The web site is currently down while we move
the web pages from the Berkeley site to the AMSAT server. This should
be completed in the next few days. You will see a follow-on e-mail with
details on connecting up to the SSTV Operations server. We thank you
for your patience.
On behalf of the ARISS International team of volunteers, I thank you all
for your interest and participation in the ARISS Program.
73, Frank Bauer, KA3HDO
AMSAT V.P. for Human Spaceflight Programs
ARISS International Chairman

AMSAT donor operations loaners
AMSAT News Service Bulletin 349.02
From AMSAT HQ SILVER SPRING, MD.
December 14, 2008
To All RADIO AMATEURS
BID: $ANS-349.02
The AMSAT Operations team is in the process of acquiring a few sets of
basic loaner gear that will be available to DXpeditions and other groups
in order to promote activity on the satellites. Initially these will
consist of simple FM portable stations including a full duplex dual band
HT and an Arrow or other suitable antenna. Depending on the success of
the program, we will likely expand it to include the transponder and
digital satellites as well. We also expect to be able to integrate AO-51
operations into the program. In the recent past, similar efforts have
been undertaken by individuals within AMSAT, including W9AE's AO-40
package, and KO4MA's gear loaned to the KG4SB Gitmo operation.
Thanks to the past generosity of AMSAT-OZ and a few individual donors to
a prior personal effort to equip a Peruvian university station for
AO-40, I have approximately 140 dollars to redirect to this project. To
complete the first phase of this, I'd like to have on hand two split
boom Arrow antennas with diplexers and two late model full duplex
handhelds. The preferred rig is the Kenwood D-7 or Yaesu FT-530. These
will be packaged together in two custom crush-proof PVC carrying tubes.
We already have a major DXpedition to a location within LEO range of

To switch the transmitter on, you need to send a CTCSS tone of 74.4
Hz. The order of operation is thus: (allow for Doppler as necessary):
1) Transmit on 145.850 MHz with a tone of 74.4 Hz to arm the 10 minute
timer on board the spacecraft.
2) Now transmit on 145.850 MHz (FM Voice) using 67.0 Hz to PT the re-
peater on and off within the 10 Minute window.
3) Sending the 74.4 tone again within the 10 minute window will reset
the 10 minute timer.

AO-16 Command Station, Mark N8MH reported this week, "As expected,
over the last few days AO-16 has started to again experience
'shutdowns'. So far I've restarted the bird three times, and each
time it appears to stay up for a day or more. We can expect the
situation to worsen, as the eclipse periods get longer and the
satellite temperatures continue to go down. We've been warning you,
get those AO-16 contacts in now!"
Mark says he will try to restart AO-16 as long as possible when
his schedule allows him. Satellite operator reports to the OSCAR
Satellite Status page by KD5QGR at http://oscar.dcarr.org/ are
very helpful.
Mark continues, "If the birds is operational in voice mode, you
should clearly hear the "not-so-repressed carrier" on the downlink.
I have a special request - if you do not hear the carrier, please do
not transmit to AO-16, as your transmissions make it difficult to
command the satellite. And, if you hear the "hummmming" of the PSK
transmitting, again please do not attempt to transmit to the bird;
it's likely that I have restarted the bird and need to collect tele-
metry before configuring it into voice mode. Thanks to all you faith-
ful AO-16 operators!"
Current operational mode for AO-16 (as available!):

ARISS 25th Commemorative Event to Feature 9K6 Packet This Week
AMSAT News Service Bulletin 342.02

As promised by ARISS, the 25th Anniversary Commemorative radio
event started operations from the ISS amateur radio station this
week. Early in the week several amateur stations around the world
were able to copy the slow-scan television (SSTV) pictures trans-
mitted from the ISS. On Friday, December 5 the ARISS crossband
FM repeater was enabled with several stations reporting excellent
signals. When the crossband repeater is operational its uplink is
on 437.800 MHz FM with its downlink on 145.800 MHz FM. Remember to
adjust for doppler shift when operating in this mode.
For the week of December 7-12 ARISS will run a test of 9600 baud
packet operations on the simplex frequency 145.825 MHz.
To celebrate our 25 years of amateur radio operations from space,
the ARISS team has planned a set of special event opportunities
during the month of December and part of January. A special certi-
ficate is being developed for those who communicate with the ISS,
either 2-way direct (with the ISS crew, the digipeater, or cross
band repeater), or 1-way reception of SSTV or voice downlink. Several
"surprises" planned over the month-long celebration. The surprises
will be announced once ARISS is pre-positioned to accomplish them.
ARISS reminds everyone that ISS flight requirements related to EVA
and vehicle activity may require the radio to be off for some portion
of this schedule. And school contacts and general QSO opportunities
by the crew will also preempt this schedule for short periods of time.
But remember that if you hear these, you still qualify for a commemor-
ative certificate.

and ARISS International Chairman for the above information]

Sumbandilasat to be Launch from Baikonur
AMSAT News Service Bulletin 342.03
From AMSAT HQ SILVER SPRING, MD.

It is official! South Africa's second satellite, SumbandilaSat, will
be launched
from the Russian Baikonur Cosmodrome in the December to March time frame.
SumbandilaSat has been unpacked and is undergoing testing at SunSpace in
Stellenbosch before it will be shipped to Russia for integration with
the launch
vehicle. Engineers at the launch site are preparing a special adapter ring to
accommodate the Sumbandila structure on the rocket.
"Sumbandila" means showing or pointing the way. Freely translated into English
"Pathfinder"
The Amateur Radio Payload will be operating in conjunction with the University
of Stellenbosch Software Defined Receiver project as it will share the VHF
receiver and UHF transmitter used by the SDR project.
SA AMSAT has designed and built a control system to facilitate the following
operations:
* V/U voice transponder with an uplink in the 2 metre band and a
downlink in
the 70cm band.
* A parrot repeater (voice digipeater)
* A voice beacon
The control unit will command the various function of the transponder
and handle
the parrot and beacon messaging. On receipt of a tone from the VUCU VHF
receiver, the CTCSS tone will be decoded and depending on the tone received the
unit will command the VU transponder operation or the parrot repeater. In the
transponder mode the satellite will act like a cross-band FM repeater and allow
two way communications with other stations on the ground.
If the tone received indicates parrot operation, the interface unit will record
20 seconds of audio on its VHF uplink receiver and replay the recorded audio on
the UHF downlink.
Should, for a predetermined period, there be no tones received, the controller
will initiate a voice beacon, transmitting a pre-recorded message at regular
intervals. This facility will offer many opportunities for educational
projects.

1. Upcoming School Contacts
An Amateur Radio on the International Space Station (ARISS) contact has been
scheduled with Ellis School in Belleville, Illinois on Monday, December 8 at
16:54 UTC. Space studies have been integrated into the school curriculum.
Students have created solar system models, written reports and given
presentations to their classes. They have designed rockets and given talks to
the class about where the rockets will go and what they will do in space. They
have planned space colonies and determined how the astronauts will travel, how
they will obtain food and where they will live. They have also sampled space
food. Students have learned about Expedition 18, the Space Shuttle, the
international partners and the ISS and amateur radio. The class is currently
growing seeds that were flown in space.
An Amateur Radio on the International Space Station (ARISS) contact has been
scheduled for Stephen F. Austin Elementary School in Richmond, Texas
on Tuesday,
December 9 at 15:43 UTC. Students have studied space and the identifying
characteristics of objects in our solar system including the sun, planets, and
moon. Each year the 5th grade students participate in a simulated space shuttle
mission, performing tasks that would happen on a regular shuttle flight. Each
grade level is involved in some manner with the various missions that occur
throughout the day. The school has integrated the ARISS contact as part of this
activity.
The Istituto Comprensivo "Marco Polo," in Grado, Italy has been
scheduled for an
Amateur Radio on the International Space Station (ARISS) contact on Wednesday,
December 10 at 10:08 UTC.
An Amateur Radio on the International Space Station (ARISS) contact has been
scheduled with 2 Circolo Didattico San Giuseppe in Mola di Bari, Bari, Italy on
Friday, December 12 at 14:14 UTC. Lesson plans have been developed
for students
that cover amateur radio and space missions. Newspapers, radio and television,
both local and regional, will report on the event.
2. New Zealand Homeschoolers Experience ARISS Contact
Wairarapa Home School Association students from Carterton, Wairarapa, New
Zealand participated in an Amateur Radio on the International Space Station
(ARISS) contact on Wednesday, November 26 via telebridge stations VK5ZAI and
VK4KHZ, both in Australia. Mike Fincke, KE5AIT, answered all 15 questions
asked. The audio was available on EchoLink and Internet Radio Linking Project
(IRLP). This was the second ARISS contact performed with New Zealand students.

covered the ARISS
meetings held in Moscow during July 2008. An excerpt from the article may be
viewed here: http://www.cq-vhf.com/Fall08Sat.html
5. ARISS Commemorative Event
Twenty-five years ago, Owen Garriott, W5LFL, became the first amateur radio
operator to talk to hams from space on the STS-9 Space Shuttle Columbia mission
which was launched on November 28 and landed on December 8, 1983. To celebrate
this event, an Amateur Radio on the International Space Station (ARISS)
commemorative event will be held during the month of December through early
January. A special certificate is being developed for those who communicate
with the ISS, either 2-way direct (with the ISS crew, the digipeater, or cross
band repeater), or 1-way reception of SSTV or voice downlink. For more details,
