FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE: August 25, 2008
Popular Communications Senior Editor Tom Kneitel, W4XAA (ex-K2AES), SK
(Hicksville, NY August 25, 2008) -- Radio monitoring icon Tom Kneitel,
W4XAA (ex-K2AES), passed away in Florida on August 22 at age 75. He had
been in poor health for the past several years. Tom was Senior Editor
and founding Editor of Popular Communications magazine, a CQ
publication. The grandson of animation pioneer Max Fleischer and son of
animator Seymour Kneitel, "Tommy" preferred the print media, writing for
Popular Electronics and Electronics Illustrated in the 1950s and '60s.
He started the Popular Electronics registered shortwave monitor program,
which issued unofficial "WPE" callsigns to active SWLs.
His association with CQ began when he became the founding editor of S9,
a CB magazine started by then-CQ publisher Cowan Publishing, Inc. When
S9 ceased publication, Kneitel and current CQ Publisher Dick Ross,
K2MGA, launched Popular Communications in 1982. Tommy was Editor of
Pop'Comm until 1995, when he gave up day-to-day responsibilities for the
magazine and became Senior Editor. He served as an advisor and resource
to his successors until recently before his passing. He was also the
author of a multitude of books on CB, scanning and other radio-related
topics.
"It goes without saying that Pop’Comm wouldn’t exist had it not been for
the vision and hard work of Tommy Kneitel," says current Popular
Communications Editor Edith Lennon, N2ZRW. "In the 13 years he headed
this magazine, with great zeal, foresight, and his inimitable humor, he
helped shape this hobby of ours and quite possibly an entire industry."
Lennon added, "Personally, I feel very fortunate to have had the
opportunity to work with him over the years, to have experienced the
pure delight of his story-telling abilities, and to have picked up even
just a little bit of his vast wealth of knowledge."
"Tommy was a great friend from the early 1960s on," noted CQ Publisher
Dick Ross, K2MGA. "He was also the most creative and inventive person
I've ever known."
Tommy is survived by his wife of 54 years, Judy, two sons, five
daughters and ten grandchildren. Memorial services will be private.

AO-51 Continues to wow the satellite community. It is now
being used as a test bed for Earth stations. Since it is being
commanded into S downlinks and L uplinks, it's your
chance to test out the downconverters and upconverters you've been
planning to set up.
"Recently, AO-51 was off the air due to a software glitch. The command
team has succesfully reloaded its operational software and as of 8/30/08
has been back in service.
Gould, WA4SXM for the A0-51 Command team

Drew, KO4MA"
You can check the current mode of AO-51 at
http://www.amsat.org/amsat-new/echo/CTNews.php
If you think a certain mode should be used, contact the command team and
make a suggestion. They are always looking for input as well as
feedback about satellite ops.

1. Upcoming School Contacts
Schulehaus Feld 1 in Richterswil, Switzerland has been scheduled for an
Amateur Radio on the International Space Station (ARISS) contact on
Saturday, August 30 at 13:53 UTC. Telebridge station VK4KHZ in
Queensland, Australia will assist with the contact. To prepare for the
contact, fifth graders covered the solar system and space in their
studies and composed questions during their English classes. The ARISS
contact will be part of a large public event covering several aspects of
communication. The school will be part of a project involving radio
clubs, the army, the fire brigade, rescue teams and many others.
Reporters from newspapers, television and radio stations will be on site.
Challenger Learning Center of Lucas County in Oregon, Ohio will
participate in an Amateur Radio on the International Space Station
(ARISS) contact. This activity is planned for Monday, September 1 at
15:22 UTC. The Center is sponsored by the Lucas County Educational
Service Center and is one of over 50 Challenger Learning Centers (CLC)
across the U.S., U.K., and Canada as a living memorial to the Challenger
Crew. It is housed in a small school building that supports the CLC
program, 6 Head Start classes, 2 classes from the Oregon City Schools,
and a Regional School Improvement Team office. Schools from across
northwest Ohio and southeast Michigan participate in onsite missions.
The Center reaches over 3,000 students and 100 teachers each year. A
science lab onsite also doubles as a distance learning lab. This lab is
also used for summer camp programs.
2. Successful ARISS Contact with Los Padres Scouts
Los Padres Council Troop 105 experienced a successful Amateur Radio on
the International Space Station (ARISS) contact on Tuesday, August 19.
Greg Chamitoff, KD5PKZ, answered one question from each of ten Scouts.
Approximately 100 Scouts, family and friends gathered on the University
of California, Santa Barbara (UCSB) astronomy observation deck for the
event. There was extensive media coverage of this educational activity
and streaming video was available. Photos, video, news articles and
press releases have been posted to: http://www.n6kth.com/iss.
3. Challenger Learning Center - ARISS Presentation
The Challenger Center Lead Flight Directors Conference will be held in
Wellington, Kansas on August 24 – 28. An Amateur Radio on the
International Space Station (ARISS) presentation is scheduled to be
given during the conference on August 27. It will cover the ARISS
program and the school application process.
4. ARISS International Meeting Held
The monthly Amateur Radio on the International Space Station (ARISS)
teleconference was held on Tuesday, August 19. Topics of discussion
included spaceflight participant Richard Garriott, W5KWQ, and his

To switch the transmitter on, you need to send a CTCSS tone of 74.4 Hz.
The order of operation is thus: (allow for Doppler as necessary):
1) Transmit on 145.850 MHz with a tone of 74.4 Hz to arm the 10 minute
timer
on board the spacecraft.
2) Now transmit on 145.850 MHz (FM Voice) using 67.0 Hz to PT the
repeater on
and off within the 10 Minute window.
3) Sending the 74.4 tone again within the 10 minute window will reset
the 10
minute timer.

24-26 October 2008, Atlanta, Georgia - Call for Papers
This is the second call for papers for the 2008 AMSAT Space
Symposium and Annual Meeting to be held October 24-26, 2008
in Atlanta, Georgia.
Proposals for papers, symposium presentations, and poster
presentations are invited on any topic of interest to the
amateur satellite program. An emphasis for this year is an
educational outreach to middle and high school students.
Another topic if interest is using amateur satellite tracking
systems to monitor deep space network objects.
In particular, papers on the following topics are solicited:
o Students & Education
o ARISS
o AO-51
o P3E
o Eagle
o Deep Space Network monitoring
o Any additional satellite-related topics.
We request a one-page abstract as soon as possible. Camera
ready copy on paper or in electronic form will be due by
September 1, 2008 for inclusion in the printed symposium proceedings.
Papers received after this date may not be included in the printed
proceedings.
Abstracts and papers should be sent to n8fgv(a)amsat.org
Gould, WA4SXM also said this week, "Just as a reminder to all, the
AMSAT Board meetings at the Symposium are an open meeting, other
than a short segment that is a performance review. You can attend
and listen to the entire meeting. This year's meeting in Atlanta
will begin Thursday morning 23 Oct and go into the evening (and
sometimes after dinner), then resume Friday morning 24 Oct and go
until around noon. The Board would welcome your interest."

Since Sunday, the COMPASS-1 CubeSat has been in emergency mode. The
battery voltage is very low and the satellite is rebooting every
pass. The CW beacon is on in sunlight - but it only transmits on
8 minute intervals.
A hard-reset of the satellite has occurred, which brought the satel-
lite back into a vicious circle: Once the heater is being switched on,
the battery power drops drastically, which causes another hard-reset.
This goes on and on. The only chance to recover the satellite is to
avoid the activation of the heater. This can be done by adjusting
threshold values.
The COMPASS team needs as much telemetry as possible. Amateur radio
stations around the world are asked to listen to the COMPASS down-
link on 437.275 MHz. Any reports will be appreciated. You can find
a simple CW telemetry decoder at: http://www.dk3wn.info/software.shtml.
MP3 or WAV files would also provide useful information.
Please send your reports to compass1cubesat(a)googlemail.com.

AMSAT Headquarters received the news below. Martha said, "It is
with great sadness that I report the death of Howard Ziserman, WA3GOV
at the age of 55."
For many years, Howard served as the Area Coordinator for MD & VA.
He volunteered for EVERY hamfest in this area, sometimes traveling
over 100 miles away.
He had a love for the Space Program working at the NASA Bioprocessing
and Pharmaceutical Research Center in Philadelphia in the early 80's.
When he moved to MD in 1989,he combined his love of education and
space working on Space Shuttle Mission STS-94 and later on the ARISS
program.
Howard had a B.A. from Cornell, a B.E. in EE from Johns Hopkins, an
M.S. in Chemistry from U of MD. His dream was to get his PhD and so
he left MD in 2001 for Kansas City. There he received his PhD in

SpaceX's Falcon-1 rocket lifted off from the Kwajalein atoll on 03
August 2008 at 0334 UTC. On board was the Trailblazer satellite for the
Jumpstart Program of the United States Department of Defense’s
Operationally Responsive Space Office (ORS). Also on board where two
triple-cubesats, PRESAT & NANOSAIL-D, from NASA which had beacons in the
amateur 70cm band.
Unfortunately, an anomaly occured approximately 2 minutes 20 seconds
into the flight. The engineers said the rocket stages did not separate
and the second stage did not ignite.
SpaceX has announced that the problem with the last launch was that
the first stage regenerative engine continued burning longer than they
expected. It therefore bumped into the second stage after separation.
A new downward looking video that includes this action is available

HAM RADIO IN SPACE: THE PERSEID METEOR SHOWER ON AUGUST 12
Meteor scatter enthusiasts attention. The annual Perseid meteor shower
peaks on Tuesday, August 12th. The best time to see them and make
contact by bouncing signals off their ionized tails is during the dark
hours before dawn on Tuesday morning when forecasters expect 50 to 100
meteors per hour.
The source of the Perseids is Comet Swift-Tuttle, which has littered the
August portion of Earth's orbit with space dust. The dusty zone is broad
and Earth is already in its outskirts. As a result, even before the peak
on August 12th, you may see some "early Perseids" streaking across the
night sky. (VHF Reflector)

BID: $ANS-223.03
I am asked by Alexander Zaitev RW3DZ of the Izmiran Institute, in
Troitsk outside Moscow, Russia, to publicise his proposed "Nanosputnik"
Cubesat "Polar Lights."
FYI the Izmiran Institute made the first spaceborne magnetometer, on
Sputnik-3 in 1958. It is at:
http://www.izmiran.ru
RW3DZ recently referred to the Nanosputnik Cubesat in a blog at:
http://www.vhfdx.ru/sputnikovaya-svyaz/50-let-kosmicheskoy-eryi
and on his website at
http://rk3dxb.narod.ru/polar_lights.html
He is establishing a team within the promotion of amateur radio to young
people around the RK3DKB club shack at Troitsk. John G7HIA and I were
welcomed there last Sunday.
The Nanosputnik is proposed to be built on a 10cm Cubesat frame and to
weigh 1 Kg. Command uplink will be in 2 metres and data downlink at
various data rates in 70cms, there are precise frequencies given but it
is probably unwise for me to give them out at this stage as the
satellite is not built yet and I do not know whether IARU frequency
coordination has been undertaken. There may be an experimental 5 GHz beacon.
The proposed payload is a unique magnetometer which will detect
fluctuations along the flux lines of the magnetosphere and will be
oriented along the flux lines within 1 degree by an on-board GLONASS/GPS.
Data sampling will be 1 observation/second and he is interested in
downloading every quarter orbit into the GENSO network.
There is also scope for a CCD camera and cosmic ray detector.
Orbital life is estimated as 3 years with rechargeable batteries and a
solar panel charging system.
I do not have any information about launch opportunities.
John G7HIA and I will continue to work with RW3DZ and will bring any
other information we have to this bb as we get it, although we are not
responsible for this Nanosputnik in any way whatsoever.

International Space Station (ARISS) contact on Thursday, July 31.
Telebridge station ON4ISS in Belgium facilitated the contact. Twelve
students had16 questions answered by astronaut Greg Chamitoff, KD5PKZ.
The audio for this event was fed into the EchoLink AMSAT (101 377)
server, receiving 10 connections and it was also fed into the JK1ZRW
(277 208) server.
3. ARISS Meetings Held
The annual Amateur Radio on the International Space Station (ARISS) Face
to Face Meeting was held in Moscow on July 17-18. Status reports were
given by all committees and the election of officers was held. This
meeting was preceded by the first Amateur Radio Working Group (ARWG)
conference and was followed by a Technical Interchange Meeting (TIM) on
July 21-23 where discussions covered SuitSat-2 and ARISS hardware. A
final meeting was held at the Gagarin Cosmonauts Training Centre (GCTC)
to discuss astronaut training on the ARISS equipment. All meetings were
successful, much was accomplished and minutes will be available in the
near future.
4. NASA Posts ARISS Article to Web Site
An Amateur Radio on the International Space Station (ARISS) article has
been written and posted to NASA Web sites. Several ARISS members were
interviewed for the story, including astronaut Bill McArthur, KC5ACR.
