November 8, 2009 To All RADIO AMATEURS BID: $ANS-312.01 ARISSat-1 development work as well as the testing and delivery of the Amateur Radio antennas for the ISS Columbus module have been mentioned in prior week's news coverage. Now, as these projects prepare for space flight, is a good time for a summary report. Columbus Module Antennas Ready for Flight ----------------------------------------- Rosalie White, K1STO reported on ARISS Columbus module antenna work via a feature story on the ARRL Web. She described Lou McFadin's W5DID, work on getting the antenna shipment from Europe cleared through customs and delivered to the Kennedy Space Center. Lou showed the astronauts the best ways for them to safely unpack and assemble the antennas and associated cables once they and the hardware reach the ISS. They reviewed how to maneuver and install the antennas during the second spacewalk of the STS-129 scheduled for Mid-November. These new antennas will increase opportunities for hams to make contacts with astronauts and cosmonauts. Frequencies available for transmission to and from Columbus will be 2 meters, 70 centimeters, L-band and S-band. To start, the two Ericcson radios (2 meters and 70 centimeters) that are already on the ISS (but seldom used) will be moved and installed in Columbus. Lou McFadin reported that the antennas are now loaded in the Shuttle and waiting for the November launch. Lou also developed a cable that will allow the astronauts to power the Ericsson radio from a computer power brick and get a station up and operating quickly. ARISSat-1 Development Team Meets in Phoenix ------------------------------------------- Many of the ARISSat team met in Phoenix over the weekend of Oct 23-25 to work on software integration, to assemble the spaceframe and to make final measurements for the new cables. The team put in long hours at the Microchip facility where a number of new milestones were met. + The satellite was commanded via a radio. + New PSU (power supply unit) board was tested in the system. + New ICU (Interconnect board) was tested in the system. + New MPPT (Max Power Point Tracker) boards were tested with solar panels. + New solar panel test structure was built and used to test the power system. + The new 1k BPSK error correcting data was transmitted and received. + New telemetry data was transmitted. + Received data from the Russian experiment simulator and transmitted it. + Basic spaceframe was constructed. + The US made Ag-Zn battery was assembled and activated and will be available for testing. The team is working hard to get the satellite completely operational by early Dec 2009, when in-depth system testing will begin. A NASA Safety Briefing for ARISSat-1 was held on Thursday 22 Oct 2009. The team was well prepared and only have a few items to provide additional descrip- tions for at the next safety review in December 2009. The ARISSat-1 team also invites students from around the world to submit papers or other visual items that will be flown on the satel- lite. Submissions should be in jpg or pdf format such as a paper or a study done on science, technology, engineering, or math. Items such as a drawing of space craft, schematic, journal kept on an educational topic, a story, photo or news article about a class doing a hands on educational project are acceptable. November 1, 2009 To All RADIO AMATEURS BID: $ANS-305.01 Ares I-X Completes a Successful Flight Test NASA's Ares I-X test rocket lifted off Oct. 28, 2009, at 11:30 a.m. EDT from Kennedy Space Center in Florida for a two-minute powered flight. The flight test lasted about six minutes from its launch from the newly modified Launch Complex 39B until splashdown of the rocket's booster stage nearly 150 miles downrange. The 327-foot-tall Ares I-X test vehicle produced 2.6 million pounds of thrust to accelerate the rocket to nearly 3 g's and Mach 4.76, just shy of hypersonic speed. It capped its easterly flight at a suborbital altitude of 150,000 feet after the separation of its first stage, a four-segment solid rocket booster. Parachutes deployed for recovery of the booster and the solid rocket motor, which were recovered at sea and will be towed back to Florida by the booster recovery ship, Freedom Star, for later inspection. The simulated upper stage and Orion crew module, and the launch abort system will not be recovered. The flight test is expected to provide NASA with an enormous amount of data that will be used to improve the design and safety of the next generation of American spaceflight vehicles, which could again take humans beyond low Earth orbit. This was the 500th School Contact since ARISS began operations in the year 2000. Schools in all continents benefit from ARISS educative School Contacts. This telebridge contact was operated by ARISS ground station VK4KHZ located in Glenden, Queensland, Australia. At the end of the contact, Frank thanked Shane Lynd VK4KHZ - for the many ARISS telebridge contacts he'd already performed. October 15, 2009 students in Gao, Mali talked with UNICEF good will ambassador Frank De Winne onboard the ISS and 23 October, students in Mbour, Senegal got answers to their questions, direct from space. Recent & Upcoming School Contacts An Amateur Radio on the International Space Station (ARISS) contact has been completed with Copernicus Science Centre in Warsaw, Poland on Tuesday, October 27 at 09:33 UTC via telebridge station VK4KHZ in Australia. The centre organized a student competition for naming the asteroids, using rules of the science naming process. This month the winners travelled to Warsaw for the competition finale and will take part in the ARISS event. Sherbrooke Community School in Sassafras, Victoria, Australia has been completed for an Amateur Radio on the International Space Station (ARISS) contact on Wednesday, October 28 at 07:13 UTC. This will be a telebridge contact with station W6SRJ in California. The school fosters student participation and the advancement of amateur radio in the community. It operates Sherbrooke Community Club station, VK3KID. The school invited representatives from neighboring schools to pose questions to the astronauts and asked its sister schools in China and Bhutan to also submit questions for students to ask the ISS crew. David Thompson Middle School (DTMS) in Calgary, Alberta, Canada has been completed for an Amateur Radio on the International Space Station (ARISS) contact on Friday, October 30 at 21:12 UTC via station LU8YY in Argentina. DTMS and the University of Calgary's science department will collaborate on this event. 2. Italian Students Contact Astronaut Frank De Winne via ARISS On Tuesday, October 20, students attending Istituto Comprensivo "Romualdo TRIFONE" in Montecorvino Rovella, Salerno, Italy participated in an Amateur Radio on the International Space Station (ARISS) contact with Frank DeWinne, ON1DWN on the ISS. To prepare for the contact, teachers partnered with astrophysicists of the Astronomical Observatory "Giancamillo Glorious" in M. Rovella and the local amateur radio group ARI Salerno. Assistance was provided by the amateur radio station in "Alighieri Trevigi" School, located in Casale Monferrato, Italy. The school used a combination of a direct and telebridge contact to avoid local obscurations. An audience of more than 40 (Casale Monferrato) and 450 ( Montecorvino Rovella) students, teachers and visitors gathered for the event and the webcast received over 500 connections. Regional television, local media and newspapers covered the news. 3. ARISS Contact with Senegal Students On Friday, October 23, C. E. M. IV in Mbour, Senegal experienced an Amateur Radio on the International Space Station (ARISS) contact with Frank De Winne, ON1DWN on the ISS. Students asked twenty questions of the astronaut. Swiss astronaut Claude Nicollier, HB9CN also participated in a videoconference with the youth. C. E. M. IV is a technical college and has formed a scientific club at the school based on new technologies. 4. De Winne has ARISS Contact with Ieper Students Students from VTI Ieper in Ieper, West-Vlaanderen, Belgium spoke with Frank DeWinne, ON1DWN via an Amateur Radio on the International Space Station (ARISS) contact on Friday, October 23. Telebridge station VK4KHZ in Australia provided the connection. Twenty questions were asked and answered in front of a large audience including several reporters. The school recently built a replica of the plane, 'Mourane Parasol' which Guynemer (a French pilot) flew during World War I and incorporated the ARISS contact as a feature event in their celebration of 100 years of aviation. 5. Astronaut Jeff Williams has ARISS Contact with Arctic School On Friday, October 23, students from Samuel Hearne Secondary School in Inuvik, Northwest Territories, Canada experienced an Amateur Radio on the International Space Station (ARISS) contact with Expedition 21 astronaut Jeffrey Williams, KD5TVQ. This was a telebridge contact via ground station W6SRJ in California. At the school's request, ARISS representatives visited the school and classrooms prior to the contact to talk about amateur radio and the ISS. Six hundred people attended the event and watched as the students asked Williams 22 questions about life and work in space. CBC (Canadian Broadcasting Corporation) Radio and the local and area press covered the event. The school is located very near the Arctic Ocean which makes this the most northerly ARISS contact to date. 6. Canadian Bel Ayr Pathfinders Speak with Robert Thirsk via ARISS An Amateur Radio on the International Space Station (ARISS) contact took place on Saturday, October 24 between Bel Ayr Pathfinders in Dartmouth, Nova Scotia, Canada and Robert Thirsk, VA3CSA on the ISS via telebridge station W6SRJ in California. Thirsk answered 17 questions posed to him by the students as an audience of 160 gathered for the event, including the media (CBC, CTV, a community television station, a radio station and a local newspaper). The Pathfinders that participated in the ARISS contact earned Galactic Adventures badges and will share this experience with other Girl Guides of all ages. 7. ARISSat-1 Meeting Held The ARISSat-1 Team met in Phoenix, Arizona over the October 23 -25 weekend to assemble and test the integration of the various satellite components. The team has also been compiling voice messages to be included on ARISSat and has been preparing for the Safety Review meeting to be held on Thursday, October 29. 8. ARISS International Meeting Held An Amateur Radio on the International Space Station (ARISS) Team meeting was held on Tuesday, October 20. October 21, 2009 To All RADIO AMATEURS BID: $ANS-294.01 AMSAT's OSCAR Number Coordinator Bill Tynan, W3XO announced he has received an e-mail sent to the AMSAT-NA Board of Directors by Hans van de Groenendaal, ZS6AKV, Secretary SA AMSAT requesting that an OSCAR number be allocated to SumbandilaSat. In the e-mail Hans states that the amateur radio transponder on SumbandilaSat was successfully switched on from the ground by ZS6BPZ during the test phase on Sunday 18 October 2009 and that several QSOs were made through the transponder. The amateur radio payload on SumbandilaSat was developed by SA AMSAT and incorporated by the University of Stellenbosch into the main pay- load. The SA AMSAT payload was officially coordinated through the IARU Satellite Frequency Coordination Panel with an uplink of 145.880 and downlink of 435.350 MHz Bill replied, "Therefore, by the authority vested in me by the AMSAT-NA President, I hereby designate this latest amateur radio satellite as SumbandilaSat Oscar 67 or SO-67. On behalf of AMSAT-NA and the world's amateur radio satellite community I congratulate those responsible for building, testing and launching this new satellite. October 18, 2009 To All RADIO AMATEURS BID: $ANS-291.01 The Board of Directors has adopted the Engineering Task Force recommendation that low-cost launch options be immediately pursued. The AMSAT engineering team will develop a 1U CubeSat design effective immediately. Tony Monteiro, AA2TX, Vice-President of Engineering said, "We are recommending an approach that gets AMSAT back up in space with new satellites by leveraging the skills and technology we have today." The new AMSAT CubeSat's initial capability is planned to add to the popular low-earth orbit FM transponder fleet allowing hams to continue to use their existing handheld and portable antenna systems. This also allows an accessible entry path for new satellite operators to get started. The existing FM satellites are starting to show their age. The flight version of ARISSat-1 has been developed to fit into the CubeSat model. AMSAT's flexible Software Defined Transponder (SDX), simplified IHU, power control subsystem, external interfaces to ex- perimental payloads and cameras will now allow a modular approach to mission design using proven subsystems and components. The ARISSat-1 mission planned in 2010 will be the initial flight test of AMSAT's modular satellite. Here are some of the highlights ... + AMSAT will develop comparable AO-51 level of performance packaged into a 1U CubeSat. This includes a U-V transponder, V telemetry, U command receiver, IHU, power control. This can be done with our modular design. + This will be a U/V FM Transponder, not done before in a 1U CubeSat, which can be worked with a HT and a simple antenna. CubeSat power limitations are planned to be addressed through research and devel- opment of deployable solar-cells. + AMSAT will make our open-design satellite modules and technology available for other satellite teams to build into their missions. + This new approach will provide a reliable radio link for future CubeSats allowing university teams to concentrate on their scientific objectives. + The modular nature of the AMSAT CubeSat system will allow add-on missions utilizing several different types of modulation and band- width. These can be pursued with future low-cost CubeSat launch opportunities. October 18, 2009 To All RADIO AMATEURS BID: $ANS-291.02 AMSAT will work with a university student engineering team to develop the NextGen Cubesat. NextGen Program Manager, Alex Harvilchuck, N3NP introduced this new program at the AMSAT Symposium. Alex revealed program goals and its initial plans with a paper in the Proceedings and presentations to the AMSAT Board of Directors and to the attendees during Symposium sessions. NextGen consists of AMSAT volunteer mentors working with IBM Global Services Systems Engineering Division, and SUNY-Binghamton (also called University of Binghamton) senior level engineering students participating in their 'capstone' engineering project. Alex summarized the NexGen program goals: + Intial analysis of ARISSat-1, documenting the systems, and analysis of the lessons learned from ARISSat-1 and other prior spacecraft to create a building block architecture for future satellites. + Open, modular, evolutionary, and documented design based on this analysis. + Redesigning the ARISSat-1 Power Systems into a next generation power system using supercapacitors instead of batteries and reducing the footprint of some of the boards. + Analysis and modification to the structure to incorporate deployable solar panels with a scalable design that will work for 1U, 2U and 3U sizes. + Design a Picosat-class bus structure that AMSAT, or any other Univer- sity, can use for 1U, 2U, or 3U CubeSat spacecraft. AMSAT could make the open design available at low-to-no-cost to qualified University groups. + An Engineering Model of the NextGen CubeSat spacecraft bus will be on display at the Dayton Hamvention AMSAT Booth for everyone to study. Alex summarized, "Starting with our initial core team of 34 students, plus advisers, mentors and volunteers at Binghamton University this will be an ongoing effort. It is not a one time event, but the start of a stable, evolutionary design process that will further STEM (Sci- ence, Technology, Engineering & Mathematics) with the Next Generation of engineers and amateur radio operators. We are looking for other individuals and University/School teams to participate in all aspects of the spacecraft design - RF Systems - Guidance, Navigation, Control & Experiment Systems - Power & Structure Systems." Volunteer mentors are needed! Even if you only have an hour a week, you can mentor a student over the phone or you can peer review a document that the students are working on. If you have more than an hour a week, you can implement a small design change to an existing subsystem; you could respin the board layout to meet a reduced form factor; you could redesign a module to use different technology. October 18, 2009 To All RADIO AMATEURS BID: $ANS-291.03 AMSAT President, Barry Baines, WD4ASW discussed an opportunity under serious discussions with the University of Florida, Gainesville to locate AMSAT's satellite laboratory on campus. Among discussions over the past 12 months, AMSAT has had conversa- tions with several universities concerning a potential relationship. This opportunity arose out of an amateur radio talk given at The Villages ARC by Dave, AA4KN and Drew, KO4MA in April. This lead to contact with UF's Dr. Norman Fitz-Coy. A Memorandum of Understanding has been drafted and is currently under review by legal teams. At this time there is no timeframe for bringing about a formal conclusion as the MOU discussions continue and internal UF approval still needed. October 18, 2009 To All RADIO AMATEURS BID: $ANS-291.04 Amateur Radio Newsline #1678 reported that Industry Canada has informed Radio Amateurs of Canada that it has authorized the Department of National Defense to use a digital system called Enhanced Position Location Reporting System or EPLRS in the 430 to 450 MHz shared 70 centimeter band. The EPLRS system consists of mobile, fixed, transportable and airborne stations that use 5 MHz-wide spread spectrum channels to provide strategic telemetry information for military platforms. This authorization is on a no-protection, non-interference basis, which means that no new restrictions will be imposed on Canadian amateur operations in this band as a result. Industry Canada says that there is a slight chance of minor interference to amateur radio systems. Typically in the form of a minor audible clicking noise. If Canadian amateurs encounter such interference, they are requested to report it by e-mail to Radio Amateurs of Canada at regulatory at rac dot ca. The information reported should include the geographical location, date, time, frequency and mode being used by the amateur station, and a description of theinterference. October 16, 2009 To All RADIO AMATEURS BID: $ANS-289.01 AMSAT-NA is supporting the 52nd Jamboree on the Air (JOTA) Scouting event by dedicating AO-51 operation to the Scouts. AMSAT-NA VP Operations, Drew Glasbrenner, KO4MA said, "For October 17th and 18th, the AO-51 QRP repeater will be allocated for JOTA use. All users are requested to give way to JOTA stations or QSOs with JOTA stations." The frequencies used for this weekend will be 145.880 FM uplink, and 435.150 FM downlink, no PL tone required. The mode change should occur at ~00:00 UTC on the 17th (Friday evening in the US) and run for approximately 48 hours. AMSAT wishes the Scouts good luck operating via the AO-51 satellite for the event. Reports of your JOTA operations should be sent to the AMSAT-BB or directly to ko4ma(a)amsat.org.
