I've heard Richard, W5KWQ, make several voice contacts since he's arrived on ISS. Is he listening on the 144.490 uplink? Haven't been able to get through, yet. Probably lots of competition. :-) Bruce K3LTM

Hi all, I left a (computer) voice recorder going all day while I was at work, and I caught Richard Garriott's first QSO from space, with N4AC, and his next QSO with W4TNJ. I haven't fully gone through the audio, but there is also a school contact near the end of my recording. If anyone wants a copy of the audio, please email me (w4sv at arrl dot net). Unfortunately, I don't think I received any SSTV signals today... but I will check the recording more carefully to be sure. 73, Stan W4SV

ARISS Sept 24, 2008 Update and Call for Support

All, The ARISS volunteer team is working quite feverishly in preparation for the upcoming Soyuz 17S mission with Richard Garriott, W5KWQ, and Mike Fincke, KE5AIT, on-board. This e-mail provides an interim update for the mission and some new news regarding on-orbit ARISS hardware. Please refer to the press release dated Sept 18 for additional information on Richard Garriott's flight operations. Hardware Deliveries SSTV: Richard plans to take a Kenwood VC-H1 SSTV communicator with him on-board the Soyuz for his flight and leave this on-board the ISS for future ARISS use. The VC-H1 has completed all hardware certification on the US and Russian sides. The final test, an EMI radiated emissions test, was performed last week and the test data was delivered to Sergey Samburov, RV3DR in Russia this week. The VC-H1 provides a very simple interface for ISS crew members and does not require the use of a computer. Computer usage has been a real challenge for ARISS, so the VC-H1 represents a lesson learned to improve ARISS operations. Backup Hardware: At this week's ARISS-International Meeting we received confirmation from Sergey, RV3DR, that the recent Progress flight delivered the flight backup D-700, a David Clark Headset for the Ericsson system, and an additional VOX box and cables to support the computer-operated SSTV system. The D700 may be installed as early as late this week, depending on crew availability. The flight backup will not provide a significant change in ARISS ops. It will make it easier for the crew to change program modes (PMs). Richard Garriott Operations--Call for Support Early during Richard Garriott's flight, he expects to setup the VC-H1 and autonomously transmit a new Earth image every 3 minutes. He hopes to have this system on a great deal of his flight. We encourage the ham community to bring SSTV equipment into schools and download these images in real-time. The ARISS team also plans to display images from hams around the world on a special on a web/blog site. A beta site has been developed and will be rolled out to the ham community in the near future. To successfully implement the on-line SSTV picture site and support it 24/7 during Richard's flight, we will need some savvy individuals that can sort through the many SSTV photos that ARISS will receive and keep the SSTV site up to date in near real time. Some computer skills will be required. We are looking for global support from a few individuals in each international region to make this happen. That way we will not be asking individuals to volunteer all-night to realize this project. If you are interested in helping on this, please e-mail me directly. All, Richard Garriott is now on-orbit. Launch occurred at 3:01 ET this morning. The crew plans to dock with ISS on October 14. In preparation for the SSTV activity on ISS, the ARISS team is encouraging hams to upload their AO-51 and ISS SSTV pictures on the ARISS SSTV Gallery. In addition, we are posting late breaking information and pictures on the ARISS SSTV blog. An International Space Station Expedition 17 ARISS school contact has been planned with participants at Colombia Mission Project at Buchanan High School, Clovis, California on 11 October. The event is scheduled to begin at approximately 1611 UTC. The contact will be a telebridge contact between stations NA1SS and NN1SS. The contact should be audible over eastern N. America. Interested parties are invited to listen in on the 145.80 MHz downlink. The participants are expected to conduct the conversation in English. The COLUMBIA Mission began three years ago as a classroom project to introduce students to the magnificent accomplishments of space exploration. Due to its popularity with the broad student population, it is now an on-campus club. Each year we create, and continue to evolve, a space station/planetary exploration simulation and ENDEAVOUR to excite, educate, and illuminate young minds to the staggering tasks undertaken by the National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA). Each year, approximately 100 students organize themselves into an administrative structure of committees and subcommittees with the shared goal of "launching" our chosen astronauts into space for a two day mission aboard our mock space station. Participants will ask as many of the following questions as time allows: 1. Do you notice that your body composition changes over the course of the mission? If so, what training will you do to return it to normal? 2. What has been your favorite moment during your time on the ISS? Do you receive up-to-date entertainment, such as t.v. episodes or movies on the ISS? 3. Have you been following the presidential campaign? How do you see the outcome affecting the space program? 4. Since we last spoke, have you been able to spot any new locations on earth that you were interested in observing? 5. Has being in space affected your dream patterns? 6. What food items on earth do you miss the most? 7. Were you able to see Hurricane Ike form over the Caribbean a few weeks ago? From your view, were you able to observe how devastating it was? 8. What is the most interesting task you've performed this week? 9. What will you miss most about your time on the ISS? We know that you are unable to bathe in a conventional manner. How do you maintain your personal hygiene while on the Space Station? 10. What was either the most gruesome, or the funniest aspect of astronaut training? 11. What was the last thing you did with your family before takeoff? 12. When you have free time, what do you like to think about? 13. What part of the earth (if you can see it right now) can you see right now? 14. For me, looking at photos of the earth from space brings out a sense of spirituality because it makes me realize that humans can accomplish so much even though we're all technically so small. Does being in space affect your spirituality and philosophy of the human race? Does this also cause you to feel like you have a stronger connection with the earth than the average person?
