An International Space Station school contact has been planned with participants at Inukjuak Space Camp, Kuujjuaq Quebec, Canada on 1 July. The event is scheduled to begin at approximately 14:25 UTC. The duration of the contact is approximately 9 minutes and 50 seconds. The contact will be a telebridge between NA1SS and W6SRJ. The contact should be audible over the west coast of the U.S. Interested parties are invited to listen in on the 145.80 MHz downlink. The contact will be conducted in English. Inukjuak is an Inuit settlement located on Hudson Bay at the mouth of the Innuksuak River in the Nunavik region of northern Quebec, Canada. The population in 2008 was approximately 1500. It is only accessible by boat during the summer, but air service is available year round. Inukjuak means "The Giant" in the Inuktitut language. In the past, the site was known as Port Harrison. The area has long been inhabited by the Inuit - many archeological sites confirm this.For this Space contact, students will be flown from various parts of the northern region to take part in this Space camp sponsored by the Makivik corporation (Inuit Air, First Air), The Canadian Space Agency and ICOM Canada. Participants will ask as many of the following questions as time allows: 1. How did you become an astronaut? 2. Do you ever get lonely on the space station? 3. What happens when you sneeze in space? 4. How do you go to the bathroom in space? 5. What kinds of experiments are you working on? 6. Have you ever used the Canadarm? 10. What kinds of noises do you hear in the space station? 11. Do you get isolation pay? 12. How do you tell day from night? 13. How many sunrises and sunsets do you see in a day? 14. What is your greatest fear and greatest joy being in space? 15. Did you bring anything special with you from home? 16. Do you dream while you sleep in space? 17. How do you sleep in space? 18. Have your sleep patterns changed during your time on the space station? 19. How do you keep clean on the space station? 20. Do you get to check your email? 21. What do you do during your free time? 22. Do you have any free time on the space station? 23. What happens if you get sick on the space station? 24. Amateur Radio on the International Space Station (ARISS) Status Report June 29, 2009 1. Upcoming School Contact Inukjuak Space Camp in Kuujjuaq Quebec, Canada has been scheduled for an Amateur Radio on the International Space Station (ARISS) contact on Wednesday, July 1 at 14:25 UTC assisted by telebridge station W6SRJ in California. Makivik Corporation, a non-profit organization that promotes economic growth of Inuit businesses, is supporting the event. Students from grades 1-6 have been involved in a space club to learn about space, the ISS and radio protocol. 2. Successful ARISS Contact with ESA Astronaut Frank De Winne On Monday, June 22, students from Centre scolaire de Berlaymont in Waterloo, Belgium experienced a successful Amateur Radio on the International Space Station (ARISS) contact with European Space Agency (ESA) astronaut Frank De Winne, ON1DWN on the ISS. Telebridge station W6SRJ in California facilitated the contact. An audience of approximately 500 students, parents and guests gathered and watched as the youth asked 25 questions about life and work in space. The audio was fed into the AMSAT and JK1ZRW servers. Among the media covering the contact were two newspapers and a national television station. 3. Belgian High School Students Participate in ARISS Contact On Saturday, June 27, students attending Grote-Hogeschool, Departement IWT in Hoboken, Belgium experienced an Amateur Radio on the International Space Station (ARISS) contact. The contact was held in conjunction with the school's information day which focused on motivating high school students to continue their studies in technical fields such as engineering. The contact was made possible through telebridge station W6SRJ in California. Twenty students posed one question each to European Space Agency (ESA) astronaut Frank De Winne, ON1DWN. Approximately 250 students and guests attended the event. Media coverage included television stations and newspapers. Expanded outreach was provided by EchoLink and Internet Radio Linking Project (IRLP) audio feeds. 4. ARRL Article on Field Day On Thursday, June 25, the American Radio Relay League (ARRL) ran an article about Field Day and the possibility of astronaut participation. Astronaut Training Status Simulated contacts are being planned for four licensed astronauts during the week of June 29. Soichi Noguchi, KD5TVP, Timothy J. Creamer, KC5WKI, Doug Wheelock, KF5BOC and Satoshi Furukawa, KE5DAW are tentatively scheduled for these training sessions, which are terrestrial-based amateur radio contacts using Amateur Radio on the International Space Station (ARISS) equivalent equipment.

An International Space Station school contact has been planned with participants at Karel de Grote-Hogeschool, Department IWT, Hoboken, Belgium on 27 June. The event is scheduled to begin at approximately 09:33 UTC. The duration of the contact is approximately 9 minutes and 52 seconds. The contact will be a telebridge between NA1SS and W6SRJ. The contact should be audible over the west coast of the U.S. Interested parties are invited to listen in on the 145.80 MHz downlink. The contact is expected to be conducted in English (or Dutch). The Karel de Grote-Hogeschool is a university college in Antwerp, Belgium. With a student population around 8000 students, it is among the largest educational institutes in Flanders. The department of Industrial Sciences and Technology has about 1100 students. Their programs allow students to seek professional Bachelor degrees in Chemistry, Biomedical Lab-technology, Automotive technology, Electromechanics, Photography, Multimedia and Communication technology. In addition, academic degrees are offered such as Bachelor's and Master's degrees in Chemistry, Biochemistry, Electronics-ICT and Electromechanics. The latter are known as "Applied Engineering" degrees. The number of graduating engineers and technologists is decreasing year after year throughout all of Europe, while the need for such disciplines in industry are ever increasing. Karel de Grote-Hogeschool strives to fill their role in society by challenging young people to study engineering and technology. Amateur Radio on the International Space Station (ARISS) Status Report June 22, 2009 1. Upcoming School Contacts Centre scolaire de Berlaymont in Waterloo, Belgium has been scheduled for an Amateur Radio on the International Space Station (ARISS) contact on Monday June 22 at 12:15 UTC. This will be a telebridge contact via station W6SRJ in California. An International Space Station school contact has been planned with participants at Centre scolaire de Berlaymont in Waterloo, Belgium on 22 June. The event is scheduled to begin at approximately 12:15 UTC. The duration of the contact is approximately 9 minutes and 23 seconds. The contact will be a telebridge between NA1SS and W6SRJ. The contact should be audible over the west coast of the U.S. Interested parties are invited to listen in on the 145.80 MHz downlink. The contact is expected to be conducted in English or Dutch. The Berlaymont School Center is located in a rural area of Waterloo, Belgium. The school is truly international in that their primary grades consist 500 pupils of 21 different nationalities taught by 32 teachers. In addition, their secondary school has a student population of 1000. Students in the 6th primary level are tasked with a project called "Cap Ten", subsidized by several private enterprises. To carry out this project, the students choose a science related subject in which they perform substantial research. This consists of developing questions relative to the subject, consulting with experts knowledgable in the field, possibly inviting a specialist as part of the final presentation which takes place at the end of the school year. One of these projects involved the class meeting with a radio amateur which resulted in the school being chosen for this contact. Participants will ask as many of the following questions (translated) as time allows: 1. What is it like to be in Space? What do you feel? 2. Is the Earth beautiful, seen from Space? 3. Amateur Radio on the International Space Station (ARISS) Status Report June 15, 2009 1. ARISS Contact with Tongfu Primary School, China Youth attending Tongfu Road No. 1 Primary School in Guangzhou, Guangdong, P.R. China experienced an Amateur Radio on the International Space Station (ARISS) contact on Thursday, June 11. Astronaut Michael Barratt, KD5MIJ answered 19 questions put to him by the students as an audience of approximately 465 people looked on. Extensive media coverage included seven television stations, three radio stations and ten newspapers. 2. Successful ARISS Contact with Italian School On Friday, June 12, children from several schools in L'Aquila, Abruzzo, Italy took part in an Amateur Radio on the International Space Station (ARISS) contact. Approximately 200 students and guests, including European Space Agency (ESA) and Agenzia Spaziale Italiana (ASI) representatives, attended the event. ESA astronaut Samantha Cristoforetti gave presentations on ISS missions and ESA/ASI activities. Astronaut Frank DeWinne, ON1DWN answered 13 questions on the first pass and another 7 questions on the following pass. Many television stations, including CANALE 5 and SKY, radio stations and newspapers provided media coverage. Internet video streaming had more than 6,500 connections. 3. Belgian Students Speak with Frank De Winne An Amateur Radio on the International Space Station (ARISS) contact took place on Friday, June 12 between Vrije Basisschool Terbank-Egenhoven in Heverlee, Belgium and Frank DeWinne ON1DWN on the ISS. Telebridge station ON4ISS in Belgium assisted with the contact. Twenty-two questions were answered during the nine minute pass, delighting the audience of 400 children, parents and guests. Four television stations and two radio broadcast stations with national and regional audiences covered the event. During the main evening news, a detailed report on telebridge ground station ON4ISS was broadcast by the national television service. 4. Astronaut Training Status Astronaut Doug Wheelock passed his amateur radio licensing exam and was issued the callsign KF5BOC. He is scheduled to be part of Expedition 24 along with Shannon Walker, KD5DXB and Aleksandr Skvortsov. On June 9, Wheelock also received Amateur Radio on the International Space Station (ARISS) training on basic radio operations. 5. Australia Journalist Takes Interest in ARISS A local journalist in Kingston, Australia has taken an interest in Amateur Radio on the International Space Station (ARISS) and given great publicity to the program over the past three years. An International Space Station school contact has been planned with participants at Vrije Basisschool Terbank-Egenhoven, Heverlee, Belgium on 12 June. The event is scheduled to begin at approximately 11:38 UTC. The contact will be a telebridge between OR4ISS and ON4ISS. The contact should be audible over eastern Europe. Interested parties are invited to listen in on the 145.80 MHz downlink. The contact will be conducted in Dutch. Heverlee is a suburb of the city of Leuven. Vrije Basisschool is located near the science and engineering campuses of a local university in addition to a number of research centers. In preparation for this contact, the school has added engaging projects to their curriculum involving the physical, biological, environmental and other concerns faced by crew members during a space mission. In addition, the students carried out hands on experiments similar to those performed onboard the ISS, allowing them a better understanding of the crew members' daily tasks in space. An International Space Station school contact has been planned with participants at Liceo Scientifico "A. Bafile", L'Aquila, Abruzzo, Italy on 12 June. The event is scheduled to begin at approximately 06:52 UTC. The duration of the contact is approximately 9 minutes and 52 seconds. The contact will be direct between OR4ISS and IZ6BAJ. The contact should be audible over Italy. Interested parties are invited to listen in on the 145.80 MHz downlink. The contact is expected to be conducted in English. On April 6, 2009, L'Aquila, Italy and the surrounding area was rocked by a 6.7 magnitude earthquake. Needless to say, the area suffered much damage with a reported 300 people killed and 70,000 left homeless. As a result, the Liceo Scientifico "A. Bafile" school along with other secondary schools is currently operating under a tent provided by the Italian Ministry of Education (MIUR) and the Civil Defense (DPC). Teachers are redesigning their educational proposals in order to keep the attention of students that are still shocked by the quake. They believe that an ARISS School Contact can surely give them a wider look on their future. All local and national TV and newspaper media, continuously present in L'Aquila after the earthquake, will be invited. Participants will ask as many of the following questions as time allows: 1. Hi again: I posted the question?yesterday about the availability of ISS on Field?Day because we are less than 20 days away, and normally someone would be asking, sometimes it's the only time when?contacts are possible. Plus?viewing the latest Shuttle Mission info?I realized that there could be a great possibility that ISS can be on-the-air. I remember on FD 2004 I worked Mike Fincke with the KP4ES call on the first pass on Sunday, and on the second the others worked with their callsigns (and were pretty exicted, even have a small video of it). Amateur Radio on the International Space Station (ARISS) Status Report June 8, 2009 1. Upcoming School Contacts Tongfu Road No. 1 Primary School in Guangzhou, Guangdong, P.R. China has been scheduled for an Amateur Radio on the International Space Station (ARISS) contact on Thursday, June 11 at 08:24 UTC. The school is over 70 years old with an enrollment of over 1000 students. An amateur radio club was established at the school in 2007 and won the national youngster's amateur radio contest that same year. Elective courses on amateur radio, space technology and ARISS are offered to the students. Media coverage is planned with newspapers, television and the internet. Liceo Scientifico "A. Bafile" in L'Aquila, Abruzzo, Italy has been approved for an Amateur Radio on the International Space Station (ARISS) contact on Friday, June 12 at 06:52 UTC. L'Aquila was hit by a 6.3 magnitude earthquake on April 6. The schools suffered major damage and students are now being taught under school-tents provided by the Italian Ministry of Education (MIUR) and by Civil Defense (DPC). Teachers have redesigned their educational proposals in order to keep the attention of students that are still shocked by the quake. Teachers believe that an ARISS school contact can give students a wider look on their future. An Amateur Radio on the International Space Station (ARISS) contact has been tentatively scheduled for Vrije Basisschool Terbank-Egenhoven in Heverlee, Belgium on Friday, June 12 at 11:38 UTC via telebridge station ON4ISS in Belgium. This elementary school will use the topic of space travel to pique students' interest in science and technology. The school houses a science classroom with 4 hands-on experiments related to physics, chemistry, technology, and computer science that change every three weeks. An electronics project is planned for fifth and sixth grade students to build small AM radios. Technopolis, Scientastic and "Professor Atoom" in collaboration with the University of Leuven Chemistry Department will provide scientific activities for the children as well. 2. ARISS Contact with Mahopac Public Library Youth visiting Mahopac Public Library in Mahopac, New York participated in an Amateur Radio on the International Space Station (ARISS) contact on Wednesday, June 3. The contact was made possible through telebridge station ON4ISS in Belgium. Ten students chatted with JAXA astronaut Koichi Wakata, KC5ZTA who answered 18 questions posed to him. 3. ARISS Contact with Koichi Wakata On Saturday, June 6, Kawanishi Seiwadai Community Center in Hyogo, Japan experienced a successful Amateur Radio on the International Space Station (ARISS) contact with Koichi Wakata, KC5ZTA. An audience of approximately 400 gathered and watched as twenty-three students asked one question each of the astronaut. Seven newspapers and five television stations, including NHK (Japan Broadcasting Corporation) covered the event. 4. 2008 Moscow ARISS International Meeting Minutes Posted The 2008 Amateur Radio on the International Space Station (ARISS) Face to Face Meeting was held in Moscow on July 17-18. An International Space Station school contact has been planned with participants at Tongfu Road No.1 Primary School, Guangzhou, Guangdong, P.R. China on 11 June. The event is scheduled to begin at approximately 08:24 UTC. The duration of the contact is approximately 9 minutes and 41 seconds. The contact will be direct between NA1SS and BY7KTO. Interested parties are invited to listen in on the 145.80 MHz downlink. The contact is expected to be conducted in English. Tongfu Road No.1 Primary School of Guangzhou has been operating for more than 70 years and is famous in the region. It is qualified as one of the 1st grade schools and green schools in Guangdong, as well as the advanced education unit in Guangzhou. Currently, more than one thousand pupils are studying at the school. The amateur radio club of Tongfu Road No.1 Primary School was established in 2007, and serves as part of the school's daily activities. A team from this school won the national youngster's amateur radio contest in 2007. The event is scheduled to begin at approximately 07:55 UTC. The duration of the contact is approximately 9 minutes and 49 seconds. The contact will be direct between NA1SS and 8N3KS. The contact should be audible over Japan. Interested parties are invited to listen in on the 145.80 MHz downlink. The contact is expected to be conducted in Japanese. Kawanishi city is quite old and is noted for its many historical shrines, natural beauty and rich culture. The community center, established in 1987, is a regional gathering place where people engage in sport activities and cultural exchange. An Expedition 19 ARISS school contact has been planned with participants at Mahopac Public Library, Mahopac, New York on 3 June. The event is scheduled to begin at approximately 15:47 UTC. The contact will be a telebridge between OR4ISS and ON4ISS in Belgium. The contact should be audible over eastern Europe. Interested parties are invited to listen in on the 145.80 MHz downlink. The contact will be conducted in English. The Mahopac Public Library has been supporting the community for over 50 years. It currently serves 6 public and 5 private schools in the area. The Putnam Emergency Amateur Radio League will be on hand to help coordinate the contact. Students participating in the contact represent Lakeview Elementary School, Mahopac Middle school and St. John the Evangelist School. Participants will ask as many of the following questions as time allows: 1. How fast are you going when you blast off and what does it feel like? 2. Is it fun to float in the aircraft? 3. Do you have ipods on the space station and if so, what are your favorite songs? 4. Do the stars in space look different than they do from earth? 5. Did anything weird ever happen to you on a space mission? 13. Are you able to watch TV? 14. Are you on a mission to find a new planet or are you just flying around? 15. Is it exciting when you're in space or do you get bored? 16. If a meteor hit the International Space Station, what would happen? 17. Is it sad to always be away from you family and friends?
