Such a simple question but I am a loss finding an answer. I've searched many of the AMSAT Journals and only found photos of people using HT's. I looked at "Getting Started" which did list some HT's, but I suspect that booklet may be dated.
So, which HT's are being commonly used by members NOW??

But remember that the spreadsheet only lists "A" (US) models. The "E" variant (European) models will all transmit 430-440MHz without modification.

Nigel,
My spreadsheet that K7TEJ mentioned does not only address US versions of different radios. Where I know - or expect - a modification is needed, I have noted that. This was something Icom and Kenwood did in the 1990s and into the early 2000s with their VHF/UHF FM mobiles and handheld radios. Thankfully, those radios now cover at least 430-450 MHz in the 70cm band, if not the full 30 MHz band - ending the need for that modification.
That spreadsheet is not the definitive source for lists of radios capable of full-duplex operating. I believe there were many Standard HTs and mobile radios that could do that, but I don't have details on which models. There could be other radios from the traditional amateur equipment manufacturers that are also capable of full-duplex operation. I'm happy to add to what I already have, if I become aware of other models that can do this.

I have found using 2 HTs, the best receiver goes on RX, and a filter, BLP-200+, MFJ-916B, etc..., to prevent desensitization works very well.
There is a good case to be made for the IC-2730A, as it is full duplex and can do more than 5w if needed. Cost wise, it is similar to 2 decent HTs, so that is another option too.

Another good solution for filtering transmit and receivers is a pair of duplexers. Put one on the 2 m side and one on the 70 cm side with separate feeds to two radios. you can create pretty good isolation between the two radios and avoid defense even on 70 cm with 2 m up. Just make sure you have a 70 CM Radio that has one of the better receivers so it is not just affected by the ambient RF field.

When you are working weak signal FM always look for -
(a) most sensitive receiver i.e. 0.16 micro-volts, lesser is "best" (b) spurious and image rejection ratio of 60 dB or so, more is "better"
As you know FM works best with strong signals... 73!Umesh, k6vug

There is no currently manufactured HT that does both V/U and U/V modes well for us. The Kenwood TH-D723a did - but was recently discontinued by Kenwood.
SO … Use two Has! Use your “better” one for receive, and another for transmit!
And although it is preferable to work true, full-duplex (where you can hear the downlink (earpiece. headset) while you key the mic and transmit, out is NOT absolutely necessary. Better because you can make sure you’re hitting the satellites;;site and also knowing you are not accidentally stepping on someone … but not absolutely mandatory.
If you find that the two-HT method causes de-sense on one unit, separate the antennas a bit. Get a second person involved!
Some fun (and gain-fun) DIY antenna projects on the ANTENNAS page at …
http://www.work-sat.com http://www.work-sat.com/
There’s also links there for not only working the “easy” FM voice birds, but also SSB satellites.

My go-to satellite HT is the Kenwood TH-D72a, although I've also used the Alinco DJ-G7T. The Kenwood has less de-sense. As others have mentioned, using two HT's is also a good option, but depending on the type of antenna you're using might require a diplexer or bandpass filters. I would go with two HT's before resorting to working half-duplex.

Jerry:
WD9EWK's info is probably the best overall (he has looked into this a lot). That said; the best recent-manufacture full-duplex dual band HT is the Kenwood DH72. I personally prefer 2 separate HTs (it eliminates any challenges with hitting the wrong buttons). I've used 2 Yaesu HTs I've had on-hand, a VX5 and a VX8. The biggest challenge has been rigging a wiring harness to allow me to use a headset with 2 separate radios (many HT-oriented headsets mold the RX audio into the same connector; the Heil BM17 series is much better in that regards) and put an audio recorder in-line or in parallel with RX audio (while it would be nice to hear my TX audio at a proper volume, if I make it through the satellite, the d/l us good enough for logging the QSO afterwards). To make it easier to manage them, I modified a small clipboard to hold the 2 radios and an old Android phone running tracking software from a camera strap; this makes it a lot easier to manage the antenna, radios, etc without running out of hands!
I'd say any recent manufacture Icom, Kenwood, or Yaesu HT will work well. The Baofengs, etc. seem to be mostly prone to RX desense, especially on mode VU Birds (SO50, AO27, LilacSat2 (when operating)). Less of an issue on AO91, 92, PO101.
Another option: Older smaller dual-band mobile rigs that are full duplex. Kenwood TM700 and older 710s (before GPS was integrated into the radio). Ability to go to 5 or 25w handy on rough passes. With radios like the 700 and 710 that have detachable front panels, you could stuff a battery and the main unit in a shoulder bag or backpack and mount the control head on a chest harness or strap. Or run the whole thing from a table mount, up to you. You do give up portability vs HTs.
If you already have an HT, use it and get another for the 2nd band. Clint's had good success with older Yaesus, per his work-sat web pages.
If you use a single full-duplex radio, you will need a diplexer to split the VHF and UHF sides for antennas like an Arrow (unless you buy the version with a built in diplexer and keep power under 10W!). Or use a single-input dual band antenna like the Elk. If home brewing, simplest is a pair of 2M and 70cm yagis, Arrow style. The WA5VJB "Cheap Yagi's" are very easy to make, trick is making them light enough if you want to hand hold them. If you use a tripod, ability to quickly adjust polarization to match the satellite is essential - I can null out a downlink by twisting my Arrow the "wrong" way.
Hope this helps, there are several experienced operators responding to your email.

I use 2 radios, even while I had a D72. The external recorder, headset, coax tangle was more than enough to push me away from the D72 so I sold it.
I use a TH-D74a on RX, FM and SSB, and an IC-7100 for TX. The build-in recorder on the D74a eliminates a few cables and a whole device from the setup.
As a thread on a VHF contest list just said, "it is your station, do want best fits you!".

FYI, Kenwood D72A and D74 are both reportedly discontinued due to a fire at a key parts manufacturer overseas and this has a affected a lot of companies that relied on the AK2330 DAC. I still see the radio for sale at Gigaparts however. Some websites are listing it as discontinued. Excellent HTs

I forgot to mention it in this post that you need to use a filter on a 2 radio setup to prevent desensitization.
Mini-circuits BLP-200 and MFJ-916B are 2 that I have used, and I know there are other options.

Don, I have considered the Minicircuit BLP-200 for use in my two radio set-up, but Minicircuits rates it for a maximum input power of 0.5 W. Do you transmit through it with a full 5 W or do you bypass it for transmitting or ???

Steve, It's been extensively discussed on Twitter @AMSAT a while back and I can relate from using my FT-1634 setup using the BLP-200, it is a non-issue for SSB and FM at 5W Dual HTs will be fine. Many rovers are currently using it with no issues with more than 5W power. Obviously not recommended for high power use!!!

At least 70 watts has gone through mine, when a few of us at the AMSAT demo station at Dayton in 2019 hooked up an IC-910. Still works great!
I have used mine with 30 watts quite frequently over the past two years that I’ve had it and it still works fine.
I think the power rating assumes a more broadband application where a significant amount of RF is being attenuated. When you’re using it to cut off the third harmonic from a transmitter, you’re really only asking it to block and convert to heat a few milliwatts of RF at most, the rest is passing through.

I have transmitted about 20w through the BLP-200 without issue. Others have done a but more also without issue. I have been using it for more than a year now. The weight savings over the MFJ-916B is pretty crazy. Since I do everything portable and handheld, saving weight in the setup is important.

One more question. If I had a BLP-200 on the 2m side would it be useful to have high pass filter on the 70 cm side? If so, does anyone have a recommendation or experience with such a thing?

Mini-Circuits BHP-400+. High Pass Filter, 395-3200 MHz. Same form factor as the BLP-200. Seems to help a little.

One more question. If I had a BLP-200 on the 2m side would it be useful to have high pass filter on the 70 cm side? If so, does anyone have a recommendation or experience with such a thing?

Thanks to Don, too! Didn't see his reply until later.

I have transmitted about 20w through the BLP-200 without issue. Others have done a but more also without issue. I have been using it for more than a year now. The weight savings over the MFJ-916B is pretty crazy. Since I do everything portable and handheld, saving weight in the setup is important.

Don, I have considered the Minicircuit BLP-200 for use in my two radio set-up, but Minicircuits rates it for a maximum input power of 0.5 W. Do you transmit through it with a full 5 W or do you bypass it for transmitting or ???

I forgot to mention it in this post that you need to use a filter on a 2 radio setup to prevent desensitization.
Mini-circuits BLP-200 and MFJ-916B are 2 that I have used, and I know there are other options.
