WE ARE LOOKING for a good (nearly) all-day Saturday date to hold our next AMSAT-DC Spring Workshop 2014. Which dates are BAD because of other events already planned? I automatically avoid Easter weekend (Sat Apr 19), Passover time (Sat Apr 19) and the GBHC hamfest in Timonium (Sat Apr 5) ... http://www.gbhc.org Steve KS1G suggested to add the VA QSO Party dates to avoid and I agree: Sat Mar 15 ... http://www.qsl.net/sterling/VA_QSO_Party/2014_VQP/2014_VQP_Main.html This means that Sat Mar 22, Sat Mar 29 and Sat Apr 12 are looking good for our workshop. Please check your calendar for the dates of other public events to avoid and PLEASE let me know asap, especially for these three "going" dates noted. I will look for free and low-cost venues with our date options starting with the one from this past workshop. Namely, the NASA Goddard VC. If you have a personal contact with another free (and roomy and accessible) venue in the MDC area and can lead the effort to capture it then let me know about that too! AMSAT-DC Co-Sponsorship of next year's AMSAT-NA Meeting?

We just returned from the AMSAT Annual Meeting and Space Symposium this past weekend in Houston. It was co-sponsored by the JSC Radio Club and the Clear Lake Amateur Radio Club, who did a great job supporting the planning and operation of the symposium, and organizing the tour of Johnson Space Center and W5RRR club station following the symposium. Next year's meeting will be in the Washington/Baltimore/NoVA area at a date and exact hotel location yet to be determined. If AMSAT members in our MDC section would be interested in supporting this meeting in any capacity please get in touch with me (Dan Schultz N8FGV) or with Frank Bauer KA3HDO. I expect that planning sessions will begin in January right after the holidays. (Not to be confused with the planning of the AMSAT-DC Spring Workshop 2014 which begins this month and which is scheduled to occur in the month of March.) Thoughts? I'd like to get a tour of their satellite ground station ops area, ask if they also work the hamsats from there, see what their progress might be on a CubeSat (rumor?) and meet whoever is the sponsor for their high- altitude balloon experiment activities. This is the second call for papers for the 2013 AMSAT Annual Meeting and Space Symposium to be held on the weekend of November 1 - 3, 2013, at the Marriott Hobby Airport Hotel, Houston, Texas. Proposals for papers, symposium presentations and poster presentations are invited on any topic of interest to the amateur satellite community. We request a tentative title of your presentation as soon as possible, with final copy to be submitted by October 1 for inclusion in the printed proceedings. Field Day

Our March meeting was on the subject of portable stations, and FD is the ultimate portable event. I ran the K4LRG (5A VA) satellite station again. This was the year everything finally came together - computer control of radios and antennas worked, got our 1st QSO in on the 1st possible pass (AO-7), and we worked 41 stations total (5 contacts were dupes under the AMSAT rules, so 36 official). Had a great time.
