Hi Pat -- I have signed up to help setup (and clean up ) -- so I blocked out Saturday morning -- -- I can't make it Friday night @ 5:00pm I can be there as early as you need Saturday morning -- 9:00am If you want to just leave a diagram , instructions I can work on it SAT morning -- I can bring a laptop to take notes -- if no-one else wants to do it. and I can certainly sit on the registration table. AMSAT Lab volunteers!

All volunteers, It appears we're within about 3 work days of completing the cleanroom at the AMSAT lab in Pocomoke, MD! This is good news for those of us that have spent a year cleaning, scraping, painting, etc. I have just returned from the Orlando Hamcation, where AMSAT had a booth, presentation, Board of Directors meeting and engineering meetings. The entire weekend was very productive. In my absence, J.C., Ray, Steve & Martin worked on the cleanroom. It is really starting to look complete now. Here is the Lab schedule for the next couple of weeks: Sat Feb 16 - Open 9-5. Mon Feb 18 - Open 9-5 (this is President's Day) Sat Feb 23 - Open 9-5. I'm hoping that these dates will conclude the cleanroom effort (which is dependent on us volunteers!). Then, we will begin the Eagle Engineering Unit. This is a flight-like structure we use to verify some things before we are messing with the expensive (and schedule driven) flight unit. It will be taken (incomplete) to the Dayton Hamfest in May. We also have a couple antennas we want to raise... Anyway, all volunteers are welcome! RSVP would be nice, but not required. Getting the word out is one of our greatest needs. As you can see from the flier and the official announcement blurb, we include high-altitude balloon experiments in the local AMSAT stuff. I'm not sure how late the amsat meeting will go; likely not passed 5 P.M. Then again, we may not have enough presenters to get us THAT far into the afternoon. But then again, in the past people have come come forward only in the few days before hand. So your offer is most appreciated this weekend! Anybody want a surplused HughesNet setup?

We're out in the sticks so to get decent Internet access we had to get a bi-directional satellite dish from HughesNet. We recently had technical problems and they forced us to upgrade all our hardware. They abandoned all the old stuff here. So I've got a surplused 0.8 meter dish with feedhorn electronics and a modem. The installer that came out thinks it was the surge protectors that the original installer put onto the cable harness. He suspects all the electronics are fine. The dish has a scrape where the siding guys managed to scratch it. The dish has a pipe-mount on the back. (You'd have to supply your own pipe and concrete. 8) There is no harness as they reused all the old cabling in the new installation. I'm just looking to get it out of the yard and into a good home, I don't need money for it. But you need to come out to Warrenton, VA to pick it up! Since this is old stuff I don't think that HughesNet will let you commission it. ISS Crossband Repeater is ON

Print this message. FYI, YOU MIGHT WANNA TUNE in 145.800 MHz on your FM transceiver or scanner radio to listen to the international repeater as it flies overhead in the afternoon or evening. A given pass is less than ten minutes, so you will also need to know when it is flying by. See below for all the scoop you need to know to check it out! Helpful Newbee Notes: You may need to add or delete spaces in the header line of the pass list below to make the labels line up over the column properly. The dates and times (in hh:mm:ss) are given in EST -- NOT UTC -- for the greater Washington-Baltimore area. You may disregard the "Between" column of info. (I myself don't find it very useful.) Height is given in miles for the sub-satellite point, not your range to the ISS. When listening for the first time, don't worry about tuning for Doppler unless you are really picky, and then just tune for "best signal" at leave it at that for the moment. If you hear the chatter and enjoy it then tell your friends! Call to Volunteer for AMSAT-DC Meeting WE ARE LOOKING for a few good people to help make our meeting and space seminar on March 15 an outstanding success. We can make it happen. AMSAT members in the past have been great hosts and hostesses. More demos are sought. Do you have a piece of hardware that you built, software you wrote, an article of interest you wrote, any photos you took, or have an activity (done or to propose) that you would share with the group? All potential volunteers to the AMSAT Pocomoke Lab, We welcome you on these upcoming Saturdays (9a-5p): Jan 12 (tomorrow) Jan 19 Jan 26 Feb 2 My business travel was delayed to early Feb or later. More dates later. Last week we had Bob McGwier, the AMSAT VP of Engineering, from New Jersey. He will probably join us every other Saturday for a little while. It's great to have him. We also had our regular volunteers: JC, Ray & Kaitlyn. And special volunteers (our secretary's kids): Elissa, Bradley and Jacob. We continued on cleanroom wall joints, doors, Eagle discussions, and ham gear. January will probably close the cleanroom activities. February will be the tower and all the RF. We've started to really think about how to implement U, V, L, S and HF. In another week we'll have available a more final ground station sketch if anyone is interested in seeing "The Plan". After the tower, we will begin work on the engineering unit (practice copy) of the structure for the AMSAT Eagle amateur radio satellite. We want certain parts of it complete in time for the Dayton Hamvention in May. It's about time we built something other than facilities! I haven't uploaded any pics lately, so I will this month. AMSAT Lab volunteers

The cleanroom at the AMSAT Pocomoke lab is almost done (only took a year!)... Check out the little pics I've attached. There are more pics at http://picasaweb.google.com/bob2leo. We have hung 18 of 22 static-dissipative clear plastic 4'x8' sheets around the cleanroom. The next step for that is laying aluminum strips along all the joints, and hanging the doors, and of course the ante-room entrance. We have also installed the remaining fluorescent light fixtures of the cleanroom. The next step for that is wiring up the fan motors and light fixtures to the sub-breaker box. The fire suppression company will return Tuesday of this week to install the sprinklers of the cleanroom (required by MD Fire Code). This is the last hurdle to getting occupancy of the lab and machine shop areas. Here's the December Lab volunteer schedule: Sat Dec 8 Closed (this is a change since my last email). Sat Dec 15 Open 9am-5pm. Closed remainder of December. I'll send the January schedule later. We will "fall off" the cleanroom work SOON. Then we'll focus on the tower and Eagle electronic modules. It will be good to finally do ham stuff, not just scrubbing, painting and drilling! Volunteers are always needed, and even visitors are welcome. On Planning AMSAT-DC Meeting 2008

FOR OUR NEXT LOCAL MEETING, I've begun to give it some thought, especially since Easter and Passover come early this year -- so we need to likewise plan earlier than normal in order to schedule it well before those dates. For the venue, I was hoping to use the same Pioneer Hall at the HEM as last year. I must check with the manager there soon. (So far they have seemed content with our modest $50 donation.) If you have any other nice venues in mind (for free or no more than $50, and a reasonable guarantee against being bumped) then I am all ears. Checking the new calendar, the date I am looking at now is either Saturday, March 8 or March 15, 2008. An earlier start time? Maybe 10 A.M. instead of 11? (How to we deal better with lunch?) AMSAT-DC volunteers, The 2007 AMSAT Space Symposium in Pittsburgh was a huge success! I presented two papers: "AMSAT Pocomoke Lab Status" "Eagle Mechanical Status" And one of the HISS student interns presented: "The UMES/HISS Hawk HASP" student balloon project. The small Eagle model built with spare solar cells raised $640 in the fundraiser auction at the banquet! I have the following *schedule* for the AMSAT lab in November. Sat Nov 3 Open - cleanroom prep for sprinklers Sat Nov 10 Open Sat Nov 17 Open Sat Nov 24 probably Closed: Thanksgiving travel? My goals for *November*: 1) prep cleanroom for sprinklers. 2) paint cleanroom (everything available to do this) 3) finish lighting, begin wiring. 4) APRS?
