Hello Pat - I like the idea of building something - the SDR kits are intriguing - however I noticed that most of them utilize SMT components. I have yet to build anything utilizing SMTs. A Spring 2011 Gathering?

Hi, How have you been? I will participate in organizing another AMSAT-DC workshop this spring or summer if there is enough interest. To hold a workshop we need firm support and action in all three categories of planning, conducting and attending/attendance. Focus: To BUILD AND TEST something. Pick one from the following: 1. a PICetSat II flight module on a printed (thru-hole) circuit board of my design similar to that module shown at http://simsat.net/carrollsat/ or 2. the SDR SoftRock Ensemble RXTX transceiver of a tried and true design, as shown at http://www.wb5rvz.com/sdr/ensemble/ or 3. the BETA model SoftRock VHF receiver as shown at http://www.wb5rvz.com/sdr/ensemble_rx_ii_vhf/ or 4. the SDR Cube transceiver as shown at http://www.sdr-cube.com/ or 5. a photovoltaic system battery charging regulator for two 12V deep-cycle 90AH batteries for an array size of TBD at a cost of under TBD. However, we will need a knowledgeable volunteer to contact me ASAP to lead this Emergency Communications task. Such a workshop for any of these five projects will take nearly a whole day on which to make good progress. We need a free or low cost place. (I have a free facility in GSFC Greenbelt which I can obtain for us but it will require passing through Security like we did for our workshop last time.) BUT, . . . Is there enough interest? CQ ex-GWU ham radio operators

Hello, I am a graduate student at the mech and aerospace engineering dept at George Washington University. I did some investigation, and am continuing to find information about the old GWU ham radio station that evidently was on the 4th floor (ECE Dept) situated in Tompkins Hall utilizing an HF beam and 2M dual polarization multielement yagi. Does anybody have the history of this station? I haven't gone up to that roof top location yet (weather issues) but both of the masts seem to have a rotator. The RF coax cables are last reported "seen" 10 years ago, and led to a room on the 4th floor (or perhaps 3rd floor). The roof top height + mast height might be approximately 10 stories from ground level. I'm interesting in getting info from former GWU students who may still be active hams/amsat members if they remember if any equipment was left around the place, in a closet somewhere and what the specs of the system were when the station was active. If you are a current ham and attend classes at the Foggy Bottom campus, please contact me, I'm trying to organize a request to School of Engineering and Applied Sciences to let me restart using the rooftop for ham radio and amateur satellite ground station operation. The CarrollSat-2 "post-mortem" meeting and a planning session for the next flight will be held this Saturday afternoon, November 20, in the large conference room at the Eldersburg Public Library starting at 2:00 P.M. Expectations: AMSAT members would set-up tables with equipment, posters, and other items of interest to visitors. These tables would be staffed throughout the day by AMSAT members. You are welcome to volunteer for a couple of hours or the whole day. Free parking will be provided all, and lunch will be provided for people who volunteer the whole day. This event will celebrate both the centennial and bicentennial of Argentina. For the centennial celebration we will focus on Jorge Newberry and lighter than air. For the bicentennial (which is this year) the focus will be on Argentina’s accomplishments in space. The linchpin of this portion of the program will be Pablo de Leon. He has been involved with a number of projects for the NASA and CONAE. Based on his accomplishments a special feature will focus on space suit design, development and production—ILC Dover has agreed to bring some of the people who make the actual suits. I have already outlined some of his involvement in satellites. In addition to that, CONAE is sending a large model of the SAC-D satellite and I am hopeful to have some the Aquarius team involved as well.

USA Science Festival on the Mall in Washington DC

Hello everyone, I received this information from Pat Barthelow AA6EG. He is the guy who organized the Arecibo EME Project. This science festival begins the same weekend as the 2010 AMSAT Symposium - passing it along for any hams on the east coast who may be interested ... http://www.usasciencefestival.org/ Oct 10-24 2010 Perhaps a great venue for an EME DXpedition/Field Demonstration. Perhaps an opportunity for Arecibo to get on, and have small yagis on the Mall in DC demonstrating EME with Arecibo. Perhaps an opportunity for ARRL/AMSAT/EOA/??/EME booth? http://www.gbhc.org Hello all, Lotsa plannin' goin' on in these parts for March and April . . . I am preparing for the Greater Baltimore Hamboree and Computerfest / ARRL Maryland State Convention at the end of this month. See the official web link above. So far, I am flying pretty much solo, but I have some big plans that I think can be pulled off without much sweat. You are invited to pass by to chat while you are there. Or, if you are so moved, you can join forces with me, regardless whether or not you are an ARRL or AMSAT member. (I could use a hand or two. ;-) The basic plan: I have TWO tables reserved for an AMSAT booth in the Exhibition Hall, not far from the main ARRL booth. I will set up there in Timonium on Friday night, March 26, so that we can hit the road "running" as soon as the hamfest gates open to the public on Saturday morning, March 27. I have two one-hour forum slots to fill on Sunday morning, March 28, for AMSAT. I am working to get a visible AMSAT official to start with a short talk (any subject), and then I will backfill the remaining time with a Microcontroller- based simulated satellite project that Amateur Radio beginners and long-time experimenters will be sure to enjoy. My segment will culminate with a small balloon launch, not unlike what Bob Bruninga, WB4APR, did years ago except that the "flight modules" got smaller, cheaper, more powerful(!) and expendable. I will publicize a local AMSAT-DC Workshop that will be held in Greenbelt in late April like last year. I welcome your advice and recommendations. Hello Chris, Thank you for your post. Well, whether such a workshop is too advanced or not, that's your call. But let it be known that the PICetSat II module is VERY simple, meant for the beginner and the advanced builder/user alike, and that we have at least one full ground station set up at the workshop as part of the whole system, to test, experiment with and use. All is part of a grand learning experience. The ground station includes, of course, an antenna with gain. I am hoping to find someone who can help me and the local AMSAT-DC group by selecting a 432 MHz antenna design such as the recent one featured in QST Magazine, and then kit the parts and arrange for a building and antenna test session for those who prefer that, over having a model of a simulated satellite to take home with them. Since you are living in the Pittsburg area then we would especially welcome you and encourage you at our workshop. We recognize, however, that it is a long 4-hour, 230 mile one-way trip to Greenbelt. Here are the date options for our next local AMSAT-DC Workshop, each one a Saturday. If like last year, the session would start no earlier than 9:00 AM: April 10 April 17 April 24 May 1 May 8 May 15 Last year the workshop was held on the last Saturday of April in Greenbelt, Md. Each participant built a PICetSat II module on a generic printed circuit board (an "ETU" module) from a $90 kit. This year the module will be assembled on a custom printed circuit board (a "proto- flight" unit) which would be MUCH easier. The module transmits simple telemetry on UHF from a small high- altitude balloon using a popular microcontroller PIC chip. I would expect the same scenario for this year, and possibly add an option for an antenna construction project, but I wanted to check first before locking in the date and activity. So, my questions are simple: Would you attend our workshop to build either a PICetSat II module kit OR a 432 MHz antenna? Which one would you prefer to construct and take home? Workshop Idea Hello, I am new to Satellites/Ham radio and would suggest somthing possibly for the beginner? Antennas, Rotors, Software etc.. I know most of this can be found on web, but its easier learned coming directly from persons who have operated satellites before.
