August 19, 2007 To All RADIO AMATEURS BID: $ANS-231.02 FO-29 Returns to Semi-Operational Status After experiencing problems with its battery and charging system FO-29 was turned off on May 4, 2007. The control station at JARL worked on failure analysis and battery reconditioning. The team has been successful in partially recovering the satellite and this past week reported, "FO-29 is semi-operational!" Masa, JN1GKZ in Tokyo provided additional details, "The FO-29 battery is almost dead and the automatic recovery function does not work. This means transmitter will stop after eclipse and a wake up command by the JARL Command Staion is needed to start the satellite. FO-29 users are requested to please keep their downlink signal weaker than the beacon. JARL posts daily FO-29 operating schedules via the amsat-bb mailing list. Telemetry reception reports are welcomed. Please send reports to lab(a)jarl.or.jp. Mika, OH8MBN reports from Finland, "Great signal levels, the bird works just fine!! Thanks to guys at JARL command station for bringing this great satellite back alive!" ARISS Contact with New York Community Center On Tuesday, August 7, an ARISS contact took place between the One Stop Richmond Hill Community Center in Queens, New York and Clay Anderson, KD5PLA, via the telebridge station WH6PN in Hawaii. Twelve students had 23 questions answered by the astronaut as a gathering of 50 people looked on. There was some press interest in the event and the center expects to receive local media coverage. Eleven stations connected to EchoLink from the USA and England, including 3 repeater nodes. 2. Upcoming School Contact Nanjing No. 3 High School in Nanjing, Jiangsu, P.R. China has been scheduled for an ARISS contact on Sunday, August 26 at 10:44 UTC. To prepare for the contact, elective courses will be offered on amateur radio and contests will be held to determine the best essays and cartoons concerning ARISS. Other schools in the area will be invited to the event. The school has an active amateur radio club which was established in 1992 and has been a five time winner of the national youth amateur radio contest. Local hams and businesses will support the students with the contact. Extensive media coverage is expected from newspapers, television and radio stations and the internet. August 12, 2007 To All RADIO AMATEURS BID: $ANS-224.02 The internal impedance of the battery in FO-29 (Fuji-3) is now rising due to the deterioration caused by almost 12 years in orbit. According to the telemetry data a 25 minute eclipse duration is estimated as a limit as for the analog battery system use. Because the eclipse length of FO-29 (Fuji-3) is currently about 30% or almost 32 minutes, the power supply of the relay with the battery cannot serve a period of the eclipse. A malfunction also occurs in part of the electricity control system. The malfunction is the UVC which is an automatic function for electricity management. When the satellite is in the eclipse, and the light of the sun is not the solar battery, the transmitter is turned OFF by the UVC. It is designed so that later an analog system transmitter becomes ON automatically when the terminal voltages of the battery exceed a set value after the power is available from the solar battery. However, it appears likely that a malfunction occurs for this function, and the terminal voltage cannot turn on a transmitter even if it exceeds the set value unless commanded from the ground. The length of eclipses for FO-29 (Fuji-3) will rise in future and rises to 34% in March 2008 and comes over a peak of the eclipse duration. When it goes over this peak, the eclipses will decrease slowly, and drop to 20% in August 2009. By February 2010 it is all sunshine with no eclipses for about 8 months. It seems that we can apply the analog system relay consecutively for this period. Ten scouts were able to ask two questions each of the astronaut using the special event station, GB100J. Approximately 40,000 scouts from 200 countries attended the jamboree. Audio was broadcast on the jamboree FM radio station and was webcast on the radio station’s website. There were no satellite spe- cific papers presented this year, but the world of DSP and SDR was very much present. K5SDR presented his new SDR5000 radio. KL7UW (with the SDR-IQ) and W5LUA (with the Softrock-40) reported on the use of SDR receivers for various VHF/UHF/Microwave tasks. AMSAT highlights of the meeting came at Saturday Night's banquet. Tom, K3IO accepted a financial contribution from CSVHFS for AMSAT. A special moment of the meeting came when Bob McGwier, N4HY, AMSAT BoD member and VP Engineering was presented the 2007 John Chambers Memorial Award for technical achievement, recognizing his many SDR and AMSAT activities. Bob joins previous AMSAT Chambers Award recipients W0LER, W0PN, W3GEY, N6TX, K2UYH, WB5LUA, WA5VJB & K3IO. Bob's reaction, "I have had great partners in all of my work. I am grateful for all of the ideas, support, trust, complaints, advice that have flown freely from the SDR, Flex groups, TAPR, ARRL, and of course, AMSAT. August 5, 2007 To All RADIO AMATEURS BID: $ANS-217.02 Jim Sanford, WB4GCS, AMSAT Eagle's Project Manager recognized sig- nificant contributions to the EAGLE satellite design. Jim wrote, "Some of the folks recruited since or around last year's Symposium have done GREAT things for Eagle. I'm referring to Juan Rivera, WA6HTP, and the Project Oscar team tht he assembled. They have purchased materials for, constructed, and are testing the U-band receiver. This process has taught us many thing about our PROCESSES and designs, as well as done great things for the particular project at hand. AND THEY HAVE DOCUMENTED IT WELL!" Jim continued, "Bill Ress, N6GHZ is another newcomer who has done great things. At a time when EAGLE's Advanced Communication Package is still in the conceptual design stage, Bill took it upon himself to design an S2-band receiver and built it. He did so on his own dime and did it in a way that lends itself to experimentation - modularized construction." Bob, N4HY, added, "Marc Franco, N2UO and Al Katz, K2UYH have delivered a paper to an international audience on our 145 MHz amplifier design. It is HUGELY efficient. Based on Cree Semiconductor amplifiers, it will be state of the art. We will be able to produce the most efficient and most linear HELAPS we have ever produced based on this work. Marc is the lead on this development and is now designing the modulator and driver stages." Also Bob, N4HY and Tom, K3IO are working with development tools and new development boards to get the pieces of the SDX designed/simulated to deliver the signals needed for the HELAPS nonlinear channel and the modulator. Lou McFadin, W5DID and his compatriots have made good progress on critical system elements for the best charge regulation system we have ever flown. One of the discoveries arising out of testing the UHF receiver design is a recognition that we may need to redesign the switching power supply on the CAN-Do! widgets. So, I'm seeking a switching power supply designer. That individual will be faced with a wide range of load currents (tens of mA to A), very small "real estate" on the board, and demanding EMI requirements. Gould, WA4SXM, AO-51 Command station noted, "Due to a commnd station error AO-51 first came up in L (USB) uplink / S (FM) downlink mode for a day. Nevertheless Ib, OZ1MY determined the correct modulation scheme and had a QSO with Willi, OE6AG this afternoon. Probably a first for this mode." AO-51 was then put in the FM mode for the uplink on its next pass over a command station. This demonstrated the versatile configuration of this satellite's radio equipment. Contact With the 21st World Scout Jamboree An ARISS contact took place with the 21st World Scout Jamboree in Chelms- ford, England on August 4. Approximately 40,000 scouts from 200 countries are expected to attend this event to celebrate the 100th anniversary of scouting, which originated in England. Crew Debrief Held On Tuesday, July 24, an ARISS crew debrief was held with Sunita Williams, KD5PLB. Williams, an ISS crew member during Expeditions 14 and 15, completed 33 ARISS contacts with school children around the world while board the ISS. Columbus was flown to Florida back in May, 2006, to get in line for its launch to the station. Earlier this year, it was removed from temporary storage, and engineers equipped it with experiment racks and orbital hardware. After a break over the summer, workers will continue preparing it for launch. If all goes well, it will blast into space atop the space shuttle Atlantis as early as December 6th, 2007 on the STS-122 Shuttle Flight. Also aboard Columbus will be amateur radio equipment to support a linear transponder with an L-band uplink and S-band downlink. July 29, 2007 To All RADIO AMATEURS BID: $ANS-210.03 AO-51 Features SSB Uplink to FM Downlink Experiment On July 24 AO-51 controllers enabled the satellite's SQRX receiver to allow for operation utilizing a 145.880 MHz SSB uplink with an FM downlink on 435.300 MHz. This experiment also caused changes in the way that telemetry is handled. Gould, WA4SXM, AO-51 Command Station described the config- uration, "I turned off Transmitter A last night when I switched modes as the schedule did not include the telemetry downlink. If I use the SQRX receiver, then I need to decrease the transmitter power for the batteries to make it through eclipse." In the meantime AO-51 was collecting telemetry, but not transmitting telemetry. Alan, WA4SCA was active on the new mode and wrote, "It is very obvious who has computer control of the radio. Intel- ligibility is as with any of the passband birds, except on AO-51 you fall completely out of the passband quickly. In this mode the RX is relatively sensitive, but I did need a beam to get a good uplink, though my output was only 1-2 watts." In the period between July 27-July 31, controllers returned AO-51 into its V/U FM Repeater mode with the uplink on 145.920 MHz and downlink on 435.300 MHz. 9k6 telemetry transmission was re-enabled on 435.150 MHz. Successful ARISS Contact with Hospitalized Children On Tuesday, July 17, long term hospitalized children at the Arnold Palmer Hospital for Children in Orlando, Florida, spoke with astronaut Clay Anderson, KD5PLA, aboard the ISS, via the telebridge station W6SRJ in California. Anderson answered the children’s 20 questions which had been prepared for the Amateur Radio on the International Space Station (ARISS) event, and with extra time available, he answered an additional 13 posed to him by the 10 patients. An ARISS team member gave a presentation to the children covering amateur radio and the ARISS program. The audio was fed into the EchoLink AMSAT (101 377) and JK1ZRW (277 208) servers, and into the IRLP Discovery Reflector 9010. Twenty connections were made to EchoLink, of which 7 were repeaters, from 8 countries, including the Czech Republic and Croatia. Central Florida News, Channel 13, ran a story with video on the event. Upcoming School Contacts The Challenger Learning Center of Lucas County, in Oregon, Ohio has been scheduled for an Amateur Radio on the International Space Station (ARISS) contact on Wednesday, July 25 at 11:38 UTC. The center has a science lab that is used for the summer camp programs, and schools from northwest Ohio and southeast Michigan participate in the programs which reach approximately 3000 students each year. The audio from this event will be fed into the EchoLink AMSAT (101 377) and JK1ZRW (277 208) servers, as well as being fed into the IRLP Discovery Reflector 9010. An Amateur Radio on the International Space Station (ARISS) contact has been planned for the 21st World Scout Jamboree in Chelmsford, England. A Special Event Station, GB100J, will operate at the Jamboree from July 27 to August 8, 2007. Approximately 40,000 scouts from 200 countries are expected to attend this event. The audio will be broadcast on the Jamboree FM Radio Station and will be webcast on the radio station’s website. July 22, 2007 To All RADIO AMATEURS BID: $ANS-203.02 Since March, Patrick, WD9EWK/VA7EWK has been conducting a series of satellite operating demonstrations at the Thunderbird Amateur Radio Club. W7TBC in Glendale, a suburb of Phoenix, Arizona. At the club's June meeting, kits for a WA5VJB "Cheap Yagi" for the FM satellites were distributed consisting of 2 elements on 2m, 5 elements on 70cm, plus the 2m/70cm "duplexer" or band splitter. Other Thunderbird club members were ready to try FM satellite operation via AO-51 with the telescoping whip on their HT. Two Thunderbird club members made their first satellite contacts under Patrick's mentoring. He reported, "Jeff W0NWA worked Bernardo 6I2HWB in southern Baja California (DL44), and Bob K7UNL worked me followed by Jeff, K7WIN in southeastern Arizona." Patrick made a total of 8 contacts on that pass. Other club members were able to hear AO-51 for the first time. Patrick summarized, "The weather was still 105F/41C outside with a bit of humidity. We had a great time, and for a couple of the club members they now have satellite contacts for their logs. We may do another of these hands-on demonstrations in a few months, when it is not so hot outside." Thank you to Patrick, and congratulations are in order for the Thunderbird Amateur Radio Club! July 22, 2007 To All RADIO AMATEURS BID: $ANS-203.04 I have now updated the telemetry archive on my website to include all the telemetry received in 2007. The news archive has also been updated. The URL is www.users.zetnet.co.uk/clivew During the period 15 June to 15 July 2007, no signals have been received from the satellite's 145.826 MHz. beacon. I have not received any reception reports. The satellite is currently subject to solar eclipses, which will continue until 20 August. The duration of the eclipses is now decreasing and will reach a time of 10 minutes, around 10 August. At that level the satellite may be able to sustain continuous operation, however it is not possible to predict when the satellite will switch ON. If there was failed attempt to switch ON just before 10 August, then it could be the end of August before the satellite resumed continuous transmissions. The battery can no longer power the satellite during the eclipse season. When the battery voltage decreases to a preset level, the watchdog timer resets, and the beacon is turned off for approximately 21 days. When the satellite restarts, eclipses could cause the beacon to switch OFF, after a short time, probably less than one orbit. This short transmission could occur any where over the world, and could be repeated at 20.7 day intervals. Owing to the lack of accurate timings, it is impossible to predict when and where the satellite will be heard during these short transmission periods. It is just possible that someone tuning around 145.826 MHz. may hear the satellite, by chance. The Beacon frequencies are - VHF 145.826 MHz. AFSK FM ASCII Telemetry UHF 435.025 MHz. OFF S-band 2401.5 MHz. OFF Listeners to OSCAR-11 may be interested in visiting my website. The current monthly bulletin contains further details of the satellite's status. If you need to know what OSCAR-11 should sound like, there is a short audio clip for you to hear. The website contains an archive of news & telemetry data. It also contains details about using a soundcard or hardware demodulators for data capture. There is software for capturing data, and decoding ASCII telemetry. ARISS Contact with Canadian High School Students Manitoba high school students attending the Manitoba Space Adventure Camp held at the Canadian Air Force 17 Wing in Winnipeg spoke to Clay Anderson, KD5PLA, on Thursday, July 12. During the Amateur Radio on the International Space Station (ARISS) contact, Anderson answered 18 questions posed to him by twelve students, while other camp attendees and the media looked on. The event received excellent television coverage by the Canadian Broadcasting Corporation (CBC) and Canadian television (CTV). Four repeater nodes were among the 18 connections made to EchoLink by ham operators in Germany, India, Canada, USA, Japan, and the UK. Upcoming School Contacts The Challenger Learning Center of Lucas County, in Oregon, Ohio has been scheduled for an Amateur Radio on the International Space Station (ARISS) contact on Wednesday, July 25 at 11:38 UTC. The center has a science lab that is used for the summer camp programs, and schools from northwest Ohio and southeast Michigan participate in the programs which reach approximately 3000 students each year. 3. ARISS TIM Held A productive Amateur Radio on the International Space Station (ARISS) Technical Interchange Meeting (TIM) was held the week of July 9 -13 in Houston. Discussions included the ARISS radio systems, SuitSat-2 and education.
